Problems with 2002 Land Rover Freelander EQUIPMENT

I took my 2002 land rover freelander into land rover to be service because my transmission was slipping and the check engine light was on. they said it wasn't the transmission but it was the upper intake manifold, the vacuum hoses, and sensor that was causing the problem. so we had them replace the manifold, hoses and sensors. the service manager keep narrating that it wasn't the transmission. we picked up the car the next day again the service manager assist it wasn't the transmission and the car is running perfectly. as soon as i went about 2 miles my transmission started slipping. i took the car back to land rover the next day irritated. the car spent 5 days at the shop trying to find out the problem. which was indeed the transmission, they didn't offer to fix the transmission but to refund the money and put the old parts back in. which we agree to unless they guarantee it would be in the same condition. it was making more noise then before, 2 weeks later the timing belt broke. this car is a lemon. its doesn't make since how the engine, the timing belt, the transmission, and the upper intake manifold all fell at once. the car is not running and stuck in my drive way. *tr

My 2002 landrover freelander is now dead. for the second time in less than 8 years the car have experience transmission problems. i had the transmission replaced after only 8 months of owing a brand new out of factory vehicle. now about 5 years later the identical problem is happening again and the mechanic claims i need another new transmission. the car has less than %50,000 miles. the company needs to take responsibility for these lemons. i have replace all the window regulators except the rear door which needs to be replace but because of the current problem i haven't bother. the cooling system is always having problems. my goodness. *tr

While driving up a hill, my car jerked forwarded as if it got hit from the back. it happened at least 2 more times before i got it to the mechanic that same day. this is the second time since obtaining the vehicle in january 2003 that the transmission has failed. it was replaced in 2004. in 2009 my freelander is now dead. the transmission is dead and it killed my battery. this vehicle has been a constant problem, transmission, locking devises, brakes. *tr

I own a 2002 freelander se that has had nothing but problems that have left the car stalling on the road or overheating. i have all repair paperwork and have obeyed all regular maintenance schedules. the engine should have been replaced but land rover refuses to make the necessary repairs. other issues have been experienced throughout the life of the car. the vehicle was purchased new. *tr

Many land rover freelanders are having serious problems due to the faulty construction of the engine. prior to complete engine failure, there may be unexplained coolant loss, overheating, and other problems related to head gasket failure. because the cylinder liners are steel and the block is alloy, the cylinder liners tend to work their way into the block. when this happens, there is no way to repair the vehicle short of engine replacement, and many of the replacement engines have the same construction defect as the original vehicle. *tr

Check engine light , ticking engine, antifreeze , oil leak, smelling coolant inside car and numerous other issues such as window regulator , wiper motor and rattling noises underneath car has been my complaints since feb 13,2008. parts were replaced that didn't correct the problem of the ticking engine, coolant leaks, smell of coolant inside car,and check engine light which always comes on a couple of hours after the dealer returns my car to me. car was towed from freeway due to breakdown on the way home 15 minutes after picking car up from madison dealership for engine repair. dealership stated that this was due to an oil seal/oil plug and it was not their fault although they just finished working on the engine. i did not have my car for a total of 30 days not including the prior visits where they took almost 2 weeks to diagnose the problem. i was charged for a rental car during this period. milwaukee dealership claimed they corrected the engine problem on 3 different visits which i paid $600.00 for a timing belt which never corrected the problem along with a $100.00 deductible for using the warranty. the parts replaced on the vehicle is as follows; manifold assy. motor assy for wiper blades,window regulator,timing belt and differential front mounting which did not resolve rattling noise underneath car. milwaukee dealership has also attempted to correct these same problems with no success. the coolant leak is still apparent and the check engine light is on again. the only thing the dealership can tell me is to monitor how many times i have to replace coolant. in the mean time, they have sent me home with a car that has a check engine light on and a disappearing coolant problem. i guess they will continue giving me the runaround until my warranty expires aug 2,2008 just as many others has reported they did to them. please help!!!!! *tr

We currently have a landrover freelander that is on its third engine (within 1 year). we are continuously inconvenienced with this vehicle having issues that bring it back to the dealership they claim to fix the issue and within 3,000 miles we are back again like clockwork. landrover does know about this issue, and we have a vehicle that we could never sell to anyone else, purchased an extended warranty on, and have absolutely no recourse with. i brought the car in last week for them to fix an issue, service engine light was on and i was inhaling coolant fumes; they stated that it was fixed, no sooner than 4 hours after i picked the car up on friday afternoon, did the same check engine light go on and i currently am driving around inhaling fumes from coolant again. when do these issues get resolved. it has been over a year of the same issues with a car, that the sales woman's words to my husband were, the first vehicle created by landrover is still on the road. my car was purchased new, has approx. 57,600 miles on it, it is 5 years old, and for the last year and a has had nothing but issues. i asked the service manager how many of these models have had issues stated, more than he would like to admit. please let me know what can be done. at this point my husband would like the extended warranty money back and at least half of the book value of the vehicle. *tr

The engine/head gasket issue is the repair that is the most critical and terminal condition for the vehicle. the dealers mechanics will never fix the gasket, so they will only offer the engine replacement, but either repair will cost you more than the suv is worth. and yes, the brake pads and then rotors wear out very quickly, because of the weight of the vehicle (the dealer says). i personally think it has more to do with the fact that there are 2 disc front brakes and 2 drum rear brakes on the vehicle, hence the wear and weight all goes to the front of the vehicle. another poor design flaw issue, and i was told the drum brakes were there to better allow the off-roading. yeah, who ever could off road these things, they fall apart on the driveway! *tr

I always had a problem with transmission which was replaced once 2 year ago and now i need to do out of my pocket all over again. *tr

I have a 2002 landrover freelander. this vehicle has been nothing but problems. i bought the car back in late 2005 and it had 32k miles on it. in january of 2007 it was overheating and had a very loud sound to the engine. i took it into the shop and they told me that the engine went bad and needed to be replaced. during the time of the replacement the car only had 59k miles on it. now over year later the truck is overheating again and i have been told the engine is failing again. i have spend over 6,000 dollars on this suv that is clearly a lemon. *tr

While driving on highways and inclines i noticed my truck engine slipping and losing speed...when the decent indicator light came on, i looked into the manual only to find that the manual shows that particular control - but states nothing about the transmission- it says my problem is the brakes. i took my truck to the brake shop and yes my brakes were in need of its set of 2nd rotors. so i had that fixed. on my way to work a few nights afterwards, i was driving up a hill when my truck died. transmission dead. my 2002 land rover freelander's has only 69,000 miles on it. it is in need of rotors, a back window regulator and a transmission. i have already had overheating problems over and over again. this truck has been in the shop more than i have driven it. headlight issues, brakes, water pump, temp gauge, engine problems, radiator and a few recalls. : (. *nm

In october of 2002 my husband and i purchased a 2002 freelander from landrover north dade of florida. the car was in the showroom with minimal miles. within three(3) days of purchase we returned the car because it shook violently after reaching a speed of 50 mph. i must admit the dealership advised us of some type of malfunction and offered us an exact replacement freelander. at that point we should have asked for a refund of our cash payment and left landrover alone. it has been a completely expensive nightmare diving this lemon with its myriad of problems: repeated overheating, loss of power without warning (often times resulting in close call situations, replaced brakes and rotor (lost count), not to mention an air conditioner unit that only works on full power(imagine that in florida). at present, the vehicle is at an authorized landrover repair shop because the warranty has ended. the landrover dealership has been negligent even rude when approached regarding all these mechanical defects. two weeks out of every two to three months, my young children and i are without transportation and at least $800.00 minimum, each time. most importantly however is my fear to drive the car at all, and to add insult to injury, we are offered $3000.00 by carmax when we attempted to sell them a car we purchased for over $30,000. with 73k miles. *nm

I purchased this suv with only 14,000 on it with the remaining factory warranty. at 21,000 the suv engine left me stranded on the interstate 2 hours from home. it had to be towed. land rover fixed it, $13,000 they found metal shavings in the engine at 21,000 miles. the warranty covered the engine, but they charged me $80 for an oil change~ you have to put new oil in a new engine~~but they made me pay for the oil! they navigation system screen went black and keeps going off, they said the warranty would pay for it, never heard back and the warranty is out last month. they fixed a recall on the carb the last oil change. the brakes ground down to the rotors, had to replace them at 20,000. new engine left me stranded in another state with my little girl in the middle of no where with no cell service. needed towed again. the anti-freeze hose had come loose from engine, caused it to shut down...had to fix, no warranty,car had 52,000 miles (2,000 over) last week i was taking my daughter to school and smelled gasoline very strongly, after having to idle in behind the buses in front of her school. with children walking by, and blocked in by another mom, it nearly exploded! the gas gauge had went down 1/2 tank, it started to smoke and nearly got fire. they said i was very lucky to have not been in a fire with my daughter. over 3/4 tank of gas had leaked out under the hood of the suv and if something would have sparked it, my daughter & i would not be here, and maybe not the children in front of the school standing by buses or on bus next to suv. they also found oil plug was leaking after land rover dealer changed oil at $80 and never put seal back on plug. almost burnt engine up again. right now it is sitting at repair shop, land rover accidentally sent them a wheel bearing last week instead of the part to fix gas leak, i have a rental car for over 1 week now. i have no idea how much the cost will be to get it fixed this time, i'm pretty much screwed. ...

Engine coolant, transmission failure overheated, leaking fluids. dealership replaced transmission when vehicle overheated. paid 2500 for a new transmission then dealer indicated that this vehicle needed more servicing unrelated to the transmission for another 3000.00. dealer was negligent when fixing transmission and caused further damage. *jb

The remote control completely stop opening the drivers door. landrover was not receptive to my complaints. the regional guys still have not return my call about the matter. *nm

I purchased my 2002 landrover in aug 02. since then it has been in the shop for over 30 days for repair work to the stereo, sunroof, throttle assemby, tranction control warning light, passenger window breaking, etc. however, i was most disturbed to learn that landrover is "finding" out, as quoted by two dealerships, that the breaks need to be replaced every 12000 miles becasue the vehicle is too heavy for the pads used during manufacturing. landrover north america has provided no relief in this matter and maintains that it is my personal driving habits that are responsible and this is a normal wear and tear item. i have owned several other suvs and have never had to replace breaks even up to 70,000 miles driving on moutain roads. i believe landrover na has a personnel responsibility to disclose the additional cost of $300 that each customer has to pay every 12k miles for break in addition to the $350 they have to pay for their scheduled service every 12k miles. i doubt they would sell another vehicle. even the service manager at the dealership that services my car admitted he wouldn't by one either.

When turning on air conditioner water sprayed out through the vents. vehicle was taken to dealer, but situation is not remedied. please add further details.*ak
