Problems with 2013 Kia Sportage ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Kia Sportage starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 95 681 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Kia Sportage

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. the contact stated that the engine was faulty and made an abnormal clanking noise. in addition, oil and water leaked onto the pistons and damaged the engine. the check engine indicator was illuminated. the vehicle was towed to briggs kia (3137 s kansas ave, topeka, ks 66611, (785) 246-8020) where it was diagnosed that a new engine needed to be installed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 126,000.

While driving at 40 mph on 4800 south street in salt lake city, utah the engine shut down. i pulled over immediately. i could not turn the engine over with the starter or any other means. it was towed into the kia dealer and i have been told the engine is seized up and has to be replaced. the dealer has told me this has been a problem with some of these 2013 model years. kia has said this particular car is not on their recall list. if you look online the description of the problem of cars with a recall is exactly what happened here. i belive this is a real problem with this particular engine and kia is not standing behind it.

Was driving my car and got a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. there was no warning lights or anything that would make me think anything was wrong till the knocking noise. i brought the car to the dealer and was told i needed a new engine. i had all the regular service done at that dealer. they have had my car for a month now and i still haven't got it back yet. paying for a rental out of pocket.

After having an upgrade to the system our car now goes into limp mode. they have changed several parts and $4,000.00 later they still can not fix the problem. they just keep charging us for different parts and our car still goes into limp mode even though they have said they have fixed it. one day the car will run fine and the next we will be driving and cannot go over 40 miles per hour no matter how hard you are hitting the gas. several hours later the check engine light will come on but according to kia it has nothing to do with limp mode and all of these parts have already been replaced.

While getting off the highway the car started making a rattling, knocking sound, it was a scary sound so i drove it to firestone to see what was wrong. apparently i need a new engine on a car that has 81k miles. the vehicle has had routine maintenance since purchased. some 2013 sportages with the same issue and same motor have been recalled mine has not. time to see if kia stands behind the product

While driving home going approx. 40 mph on the freeway, the engine out of no where, completely seized up. after pulling over in busy rush our traffic the car was locked up and stopped working. there was no check engine light prior, no heat issues and there has never been any mechanical issues involving my vehicle. i have provided all maintenance documents dating back all the way to 5 years. while there are several recalls involving 2013 kia sportages, even with these exact symptoms, i have been told numerous times mine does not apply.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while driving approximately 15 mph, the check engine and oil pressure warning indicators illuminated, the rpms revved, and the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle, but it was inoperable. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). an unknown dealer was contacted by telephone. the manufacturer's customer care hotline was called, but the contact did not speak with anyone. the approximate failure mileage was 90,100.

I have had my vehicle looked at numerous times since i bought it 3 years ago. there is a odd thumping/humming like sound coming from under the hood or axle area, while driving, at any speed. nothing has been found. my vehicle shakes occasionally while driving over 45 mph. my air pressure light continues to be on constantly, even after shelling out the money to have the sensors replaced. i always feel like i have flat tires, although they seem fine when i check them. i am concerned for my safety, my children and other drivers on the road while i am driving. i have searched numerous times for recalls and found nothing for my vin. however, i was told by a dealer that there was a recall for safety campaign (some underbody addl anti-corrosion: sl). i have had my radio head unit replaced as it was glitching when using backup camera. the radio stopped playing through the speakers, although it still showed i had full control over the volume and toggling stations. my phone would connect via bluetooth but i was unable to use it. i feel my vehicle is part of many recalls that have previously affected and are currently affecting many kia's and would greatly appreciate it if it can be added to the list so i can have a safe vehicle to drive around for my family. below i put my last service date as when it started happening, again it happened just shortly after i bought the vehicle in 2016.

The engine has a loud knocking sound. i turned on my vehicle and when i pressed on the gas i heard a loud knocking sound. i have always been diligent about getting my regular oil changes and services for and have service records for it so thought this was odd. i took it to the kia dealer and was advised it needed a new engine and would cost about $7200, a lot more than what the vehicle is worth. the service department advisor checked the vin on my kia because he said kia sportages had a recall for this same problem, but found out my kia was not part of that recall. after further research, i have found many kia sportage owners are facing the same issue with the same engine that kia recalled on some kia sportages, but not on others. kia needs to take responsibility for all kia sportages that were sold defective not just some of them.

I was driving on a straight, open 4 lane, divided highway with no problems. all of a sudden the engine started making a knocking noise. the knocking sound got louder so i pulled off the highway and into a gas station parking lot. when i tried to restart it, the engine did not sound like it was running properly. in doing research after having the vehicle towed to my house, i read about kia sportage 2013 recalls for bearings causing engine failure. checking my vin showed that there were no recalls on my vehicle but i think it might be possible that my engine was one of those affected by the recall mentioned above.

Engine seized while on expressway. mileage 58k. change oil 30 days ago. new battery. call for recall since 2007. dealer kia in bayamon pr, replied there was no a recall. just a note but nothing for pr. called kia and said my vin # is not on that recall. pr is not included on dealers to change engines like all othery states. please verify and investigate

I was making a slight turn while accelerating approximately 45mph when the vehicle just lost power. i fortunate enough to pull over in a safe spot. the car wouldnt stsrt again and had to be towed. my independent mechanic took a look a stated the engine seized. it has now been towed to kia dealership near by. hopefully the extended warranty for either the long block, short block, or rods will cover the repairs.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while the contact's wife was driving at an unknown speed, she heard a loud popping sound under the hood. the vehicle was driven home. the contact looked under the hood and noticed oil all over the engine and under the vehicle. the contact noticed an oil trail all the way from where the popping sound was first heard to the front of his house. the dealer and the manufacturer had not been contacted. the contact researched online and found numerous failures with the kia sportage. the contact noticed that the manufacturer had issued an extended warranty of up to 100,000 miles regarding loose particles in the engine when the vehicle was built that could cause a complete failure. the failure mileage was 71,000.

Vehicle has 111,000 miles and main engine bearing going out. car was in motion when it started making a bad sound. this is the exact problem that the kia has had a massive recall on but for some reason my vehicle based on the vin is not included. i have contacted kia consumer affairs and after more than a week have been told that there is no action that they will take. i was told that at my expense the dealer could tear down the engine and see if metal was blocking oil ports and they might revisit (not knowing if they would take any action then ?) this car has been maintained correctly and is in good shape other that a defective kia engine. on top of all this, if i wanted to replace the engine there are none available. dealership said could get a $5400 used engine with more miles than mine - then still possibly with the same problem. kia was forced into the recall they did initiate and are not standing behind their vehicles. the government should protect consumers from bad players especially on such a major purchase as a vehicle. stuck with an unoperable and unrepairble vehicle.

My husband and i were getting off the interstate onto a ramp and the car shut off while driving without any warning and we put it in park and turned it off and it wouldn't crank back up and when we lifted the hood the engine was smoking. i previously taken my car to the dealership where they said they had to re program it because it was jolting coward while driving and this was very dangerous and almost caused me to wreck into the back of someone.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while driving 65 mph, the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the engine. the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. peak kia colorado springs (located at 1560 auto mall loop, colorado springs, co 80920, (719) 493-9626) was notified. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 106,500.

Sitting at a stop light went to take off and heard a horrendous noise coming from my car , pulled over called my brother to see what the noise was put my phone up to it on speaker so he could hear and said it's your engine, shut it off, and have it towed.

I was at a stop light went to take off heard a noise in my engine, was scared to drive it, pulled over called my brother, who knows about cars and said don't drive it have it towed, it sounds like the engine.

Engine failure

I bought a kia sportage in 2015, paid cash for this vehicle because everyone raved how these vehicles are so good and dependable, had the vehicle for 3 yrs, and my engine blew. i learned about a recall for several different types of kia's however unfortunately my engine isn't covered under the recall. which is confusing to me because my engine is the same that's in the optima which is included in the recall just different body style. right now there are approximately 15 million kia customers that are experiencing this same dilemma. and to find out kia isn't going to help me replace my motor! this is ridiculous there are over 15 million recalls for this issue, and kia knew these motors were bad and still sold the vehicles. for someone who is single like myself and rely on driving something dependable and can't afford something else or the outstanding amount for the repairs, kia leaves me with nothing. now do i not only have nothing to drive, have to gets rides to work, and try to figure out how to come up with over 5, 000 dollars to fix this issue, i guess it's a merry christmas to me. thank you kia !!!

Blown engine

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle sputtered and stalled. the contact restarted the vehicle and noticed a knocking sound in the engine. the vehicle was taken to tyler kia (located at 1810 s 11th st, niles, mi 49120, (269) 683-1710) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000. *tt consumer stated the engine blew.*jb

Vehicle engine caught fire during use

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a knocking sound within the engine compartment. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling), but the vin was not included. the contact stated that the repair would be covered under warranty and that an unknown dealer agreed to replace the short block within the engine. the contact stated that the dealer wanted to replace the engine with a rebuilt engine instead of a brand new one. the contact was concerned that the same engine block would be added to the rebuilt engine using the same contaminated oil that caused the previous engine failure. the contact was referred to the state attorney general's office. the contact was also referred to the kia manufacturer at 800-333-4542 to discuss the nature of the recall repair in its entirety. the failure mileage was 68,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle experienced catastrophic engine failure and the vehicle stalled. in addition, the oil, engine, and various other warning indicators and gauges illuminated and flickered. the contact was able to coast the vehicle off to the side of the road, but it could not be restarted. the vehicle was towed to the dealer (commonwealth kia, 2 commonwealth dr, lawrence, ma 01841, 978-683-5000), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty and excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling), although the dealer indicated that the failures were the same. the manufacturer expected the dealer to replace the part and repair the vehicle. the vehicle was also excluded from nhtsa action number: rq17003 (engine). the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

I was driving on the 14 freeway the oil light flashed car stalled out i had the car towed a mechanic looked at it said a baring was thrown and there was a recall & to call the dealership. they said there was a recall but not on my vin number there is nothing else i can do. everything that happened is exactly what the recall stated how can i get this taken care of i need my car i'm a single mom and disabled

Making loud noise under hood. after turning off it would start but would not idle. it is at a kia dealership in pensacola fl. we were on highway i10 going in to pensacola when this took place. had to be towed to nearest kia dealership

My wife and i were returning from a trip; traveling at highway speeds. the engine made a weird mechanical noise and after about 10-15 seconds, knocking and rattling noises were coming from the engine. i looked at the dashboard and all my light indicators were turned on. the car stalled out as i was driving. i pulled the car over on the emergency shoulder and turned the engine off. the car never started up again.

Engine seized due to crankshaft bearing failure. car was moving on a highway at 55 mph when it failed. car had to be towed to service station.

Takata recall as i was driving the car out of no where the vehicle idled down and then stalled. i tried to restart the car but it kept stalling out. i then got it towed to kia and they found metal fragments inside the engine. this engine only has about 76000 miles on it. dont know how this would even happen but i was doing 35 mph when it decided to stall on me with my kids in the car at a busy intersection.

Engine seized while driving on city street.

Driving home on the highway at approximately 60 mph, car died with hardly anytime to pull to side of highway safely. i had the car towed to not one, but two auto repair shops. i was told the engine seized. world kia of joliet was the second shop, upon hearing about the recall on cars similar to mine. of course just like everyone else, my car was not vin specific to the recalled cars, i was denied any assistance. my car has only 88,000 miles on it, and has been well maintained. i do find it fishy, that all the complaints on this site majority are for 2013 kia sportage's, has similar vin numbers, meaning they were made at the same distribution center.

Engine seized while driving on highway road. we were told that the crankshaft bearings had failed.

September of this year my daughter was driving 70mph on i-80 with 3 friends and 2 dogs when the engine made loud popping noises and quit, luckily for all she was in the right hand lane and immediately pulled over, if not she would have probably stopped in the middle of the interstate. we had the car towed to our mechanic who informed us that the engine had seized and suggested i call kia and check for recalls, i did and was told there were no engine related recalls for that vin, our mechanic then contacted the kia dealer he works with to order a new engine and was told that there was a waiting list and would add our name, we are still waiting and now realize that the shortage is due to kia's recall "sc147" which for some reason includes all but this vin. same engine, same car, same problem but not on the recall. our mechanic has all the records of preventive maintenance and scheduled oil changes that should have prevented any engine problems.

While driving at 65mph my kia sportage went dead. i pulled over onto the side of the road. i tried to start it again but it would not start. after that, smoke started coming out from under the hood. the kia was towed to the kia dealership and checked by mechanics, who said that the rod bearing went bad and it seized the engine. the starter was also fried in the process. kia agreed to replace the parts but would not agree to pay the approximately $2500 labor cost. the vehicle still sits at the dealership awaiting repair. it's been over 2 months now. i plan to pursue having kia pay for the labor as well. i now owe $7000 on a car that will not run.

Abrupt catastrophic engine failure- i was driving approximately 75 mph on interstate i-80 heading westbound in wyoming at approximately milepost 77. the car suddenly began shaking for about one second and then a large short puff of black smoke. the car then immediately shut off and the oil, engine, and battery warning lights turned on. luckily i was able to safely pull over to the side of the freeway. the temperature gauge was in the normal range. i got out of the car to inspect what the problem was. i notice a significant amount of engine oil dripping from the engine and that engine oil had sprayed over various parts of the car. i did not try to restart due to the significant amount of oil loss. i was in a remote location with poor cell phone reception. i had to climb up a nearby hill to contact roadside assistance. i had the vehicle towed to the nearest town to spend the night. i then had the vehicle towed to a kia dealership first thing in the morning. after the kia dealership inspected the vehicle, they stated that there was a hole in the engine block and the engine needed to be replace. i had the vehicle serviced regularly with full synthetic oil. i also checked the oil and fuel levels before i left on my trip 4 days earlier and they were all at normal levels and the oil was a normal color.

Total engine failure while driving. after diagnoses dealer said we need a new engine at a cost of $ 11,000!

Engine failure while driving on the highway at 60 mph. the engine started making rattling noise and all of the lights flashed and the engine died. after moving to the side of the road the engine would not restart. it was towed to a dealer who said the engine had to be replaced. this car has had oil changes every 3000 miles and only has 83000 miles on it. the dealer will replace the engine with a used engine with 68000 miles for $6300. i am concerned that the replacement engine will have the same problem. there was a recall on similar engines but this one was not included. the symptoms seem to be the same as the recall.

2.4 gdi engine recall was not extended to my vehicle but engine failed while driving in freeway for same failure reason as other 2013 vehicles recalled and now am facing an engine replacement on a vehicle with 61k miles. no warning lights illuminated prior to engine failure and all maintenance completed on time

As i was driving on interstate 20, car began knocking. pulled over to a gas station to check the oil (had enough oil) and add more, just to be on the safe side. got back on the interstate and car began knocking louder then without warning car shut off completely. towed it to a local kia dealership where they determined the bearings were bad and declined to help. car has 110000 miles and gets routine oil changes. there was no prior warning; check engine light, oil light, etc.

As i was driving down the highway at about 70 mph my rpm dropped to 0, check engine, oil and battery lights all came on and my speed dropped to about 35 mph in a matter of seconds. i was able to pull over and shut the car off, it would not restart. state police were on the scene within a half hour, setting up flares, and i had to have the car towed only to be informed that it was in complete engine failure. my 2.4l engine was not included in the recall, as kia so quickly informed me when i tried to get assistance, and my warranty had expired exactly 3 months 22 days prior to the engine failure. kia has offered no help whatsoever, if they return my calls, so i am now expected to put a new engine in a car that is 5 years old with only 55,000 miles on it, out of my own pocket. car was maintained, routine oil changes, absolutely no reason for this failure. mechanic has stated finding a used engine to fit my model has been extremely difficult, as this seems to be a reoccurring issue with all sportage models.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while driving 30 mph, the rod bearings fractured and the vehicle seized without warning. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 72,601.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while driving 55 mph, an abnormal noise was heard and the vehicle stalled. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was able to restart on the third attempt. the dealer (transitowne kia, 3160 transit rd, west seneca, ny 14224, (716) 668-3700) was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to call the dealer to schedule an appointment for diagnostic testing. the failure mileage was 112,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia sportage. while driving, the contact smelled a burning metal odor. the contact stated that the oil was changed regularly every 3,000 miles. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was unknown.

My daughter was driving the car on the highway and suddenly felt vibration and heard a loud engine noise. the engine light went on immediately. she quickly pulled off the road/turned off the car, worried it would catch fire. oil changes have been done every 3,000 miles with documentation. she had an oil change 7-23-18. the engine ceased working on 7-26-18 while driving on the highway. the car had 55k miles on it and never had any problems as it was well-maintained. the engine prematurely ceased. car was towed to a mechanic in palestine, tx who said the car was recalled for engine failure and recommended having it towed to kia in tyler, tx. kia is saying that my daughter's car is not covered by this recall and the engine no longer works. this car was in pristine condition and the make and year is listed as a recall for engine failure! the mechanic at kia said there was oil in the car. a well maintained engine should not die at 55k miles! i want this investigated please as soon as possible. my car is sitting at the dealership in tyler, tx. my daughter should have had many many more years of use with this car and now has no way to get to college! i feel kia does not want to take responsibility for their faulty engine. please help. kia tech case number is 12009982 to pull up the details and pictures.

Engine suddenly started making a loud clanking noise and engine light went on as i was driving on the highway. i had to pull over immediately and turn off the car for safety.

Engine ceased while driving on highway

Just watched a news release on nbc indicating the possiblity of a fire from the underside of vehicle. i'm concerned that this organization is dragging its feet on a recall. endangering my family. please do what needs to be done before more serious tragidies occur.

Tl* the contact owned a 2013 kia sportage. while driving 60 mph, the engine made a noise and the entire instrument panel illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the dealer (evans kia (4580 washington rd, evans, ga 30809, (706) 305-4000) where it was diagnosed that the engine froze up. the contact ended up trading the car in for an upgrade since the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the failure mileage was 130,000.
