Problems with 2013 Kia Optima FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2013 Kia Optima starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 84 439 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2013 Kia Optima

I was driving down the highway with cruise control set on 75 with 67 miles to empty when all sudden the car start slowing speed i looked cruise control had shut off check engine light came on the just went dead on the side of road the will turn on turn over to wanna crank but won't catch to crank i called the dealer ship and explained he she said she sure it's fuel pump because they just installed 2 this week on the same car

While in motion on city street, vehicle shut down. tried to restart vehicle, all lights would blink and engine sounded like it sputtered but did not turn on.

I noticed when i am at a red light and i take off to go, the car misfires and stalls for a minute. i then noticed my car was not giving the acceleration and kept stalling, and a service engine soon light came on with a code p0087 which has to do with the fuel pressure. i feel this could be a concern as my car could stall while i'm driving which would make it dangerous as it could stall while im on the interstate or while i'm going through a light.

I was driving to work-freeway 65 when check engine light and oil light came on. the car dropped power and i could have had serious injuries to myself and others. i contacted kia and they had it towed to dealer-dealer and kia 800# give you the run around-they said there engineers told them we need to do oil comsumption test and told me to pick up this dangerous car and drive it. i have made numerous calls to kia and they never call back- i even asked the service manager if he has driven my car and he said no. this is not taking care of your consumers/customers to even ask me to place my life in danger to keep driving this car-they are well aware of fires and the seriousness of driving this car and putting others in danger-my car has sat at kia -independence, mo for 2 1/2 weeks and i also received no recall notice ever. my car had 5 recalls at the time it was towed the most serious recall is sc147 nhtsa 17v224 my car had 65,000 miles . there is no way i will drive that car until kia resolves the issues, i also had large amount of white smoke- coming from tail pipe-dealer said car burning oil don,t know where, well that isn.t so true. dealer aid motor needs replaced but it is out of there hands because engineers said oil test needs done.drive it come in every week so they can see how much oil it burns-i am glad they think our time isn.t important or our safety-this is there mistakes and they need to resolve it.

Intermittent stalling of vehicle upon slowing/stopping at redlights/stop signs in which engine begins losing power/gas either stalls as if it's trying to quit or car stalls & quits. this has happened numerous times, nearly causing accidents & increasing in frequency. i have noticed my motor knocking louder & upon visual exam, the entire motor is shaking which can be felt while driving but most noticeable causing car to shake when at an idol. most recent, i've began to smell a very strong odor of gasoline upon starting the car but worsens upon accelerating. the car is running rich, and smell of gasoline is so strong, we have to roll down windows. the fumes are more prominent towards rear of car close to exhaust. i cannot see any leakage of fuel when looking however i am losing fuel somewhere because my gas mileage has greatly gotten worse & burning through it at a fast pace. i took it to kia dealership in salisbury nc today in which they upgraded computer software related to recall on 2.4l gdi engine as i have a 2013 kia optima. mechanic states the engine test did pass but feels it will need to be replaced at some point?? mechanic said he didn't smell any gasoline but he did not test drive the car or run diagnostic test as he said i would have to pay the $129 fee......i declined paying the fee and requested it be done as this is a well known problem but that was denied. i need this addressed and repaired. it is dangerous, costing me more money for gas & affecting my job. please advise.......this is not acceptable and should not place financial or safety burdens on owners as we already pay enough financing as well as regular/normal wear & tear expenses!! i'm still making payments on mine but becoming too difficult & dangerous to drive esp getting to work so i can support my family!!

My kia would just cut off in the middle of traffic if i idling at a light or at a stop sign. i even noticed when i when to put fuel in the tank the car had a hard time turning back on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia optima. within five minutes of entering the vehicle, the contact's lips and eyes started to burn and there was a fuel odor inside the cabin. the failures occurred after the contact filled the fuel tank. the contact stated that she could not breathe inside the vehicle and the air made her sick. medical attention was not received. the contact scheduled a diagnostic appointment at crown kia (5500 34th st n, st. petersburg, fl 33714, (844) 921-3247). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 74,439.

While on the freeway the vehicle froze up and locked. we smelt a strong burn odor. mechanic checked fuses and we thought it was wiring or possibly the motor but turns out the starter went bad. the burn smell came from the coil wire on the starter.

Waiting on a red light, the kia optima stalled and then smoke started coming into the cabin. within seconds the front of the car caught fire and my wife and two children had a very limited time to get out from the burning car into safety. the burning car was eventually extinguished by the fire department. local police cordoned off the lane to provide safety for my family and others motorists on the road. the weather was clear and the time of the fire was around 12:30pm.

I was driving around 45 miles and hybrid system warning, safely stop and do not drive. this happened about 3 more times on the way to the dealership. brought it to the dealer told me to replace the battery. the sign came back up after about 30 minutes of driving.

When driving my vehicle i can smell gas fumes inside of the car. this started on the latter part of last year. i contacted my the center that services my car. took it in for service asked them to check for the smell. i was told that they didn't smell anything. i was told that i would have to pay to have a diagnostic fee the have it checked. i have scheduled to have my car serviced on june 18 and i will be paying to have it run them. curious if this has been a problem. i have become very insecure in driving my car. what else can i do in this case?

Car has not wanted to start 5 times. first started in november 2018. while driving on the highway, is has completely shut down twice in the middle of traffic and would not start. once mid december & early january. battery discharge warning came on so i got a new battery but still continued to have the same problem. at random times it acts as if it does not want to accelerate and stalls

My car began to smell like gas when driving and my car started jerking, and making a weird noise..so i pulled over on the side of the road. it smelled like fuel through my air vents while driving, and when i popped the hood to look under it with my boyfriend there was a leak, and it was spewing out fuel out of the pump. what was the scariest part about it is there was no warning light or any thing that told me there was a fuel leak we had to find out for ourselves. i had called kia to see if they would replace it because it basically was a brand new car with only 60,000 miles on it and they said it was not under original warranty so there was nothing they could do for me. i had to buy the part myself which costed me around 500 dollars, then i had to buy a fuel line which was another 50, then get it replaced which costed me another 200. i was extremely upset because it was basically a brand new car doing this.. and i want to be reimbursed for my troubles. i was out of work, couldn't drive my vehicle, and had to pay for a problem that was not my fault. it was the manufactures fault. i am glad i caught it when i did and pulled over on the side of the road because my car boyfriend and i could have bursted into flames. i am extremely upset. i am never buying another kia again unless they reimburse me for the troubles they have caused me and many others. i am scared to drive my kia now knowing that anything could happen to it, or that my fuel pump may go out another time. the engine is definitely faulty and it has caused me and my boyfriend fear, and anxiety. we are scared to see what may happen next.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia optima. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 18v907000 (fuel system, gasoline, engine). the contact stated that there was a fuel odor inside the vehicle. the contact took the vehicle to southside kia (9401 atlantic blvd, jacksonville, fl 32225, (904) 406-7779) three times to be repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 7,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia optima. while driving 65 mph, the contact encountered a very intense odor of fuel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed not to drive the vehicle because the fuel pump was leaking fuel and could cause a fire. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 133,000.

2013 kia optima sx. car loses power while on the road, engine warning light comes on. car can't be driven past 20 mph or so no matter accelerator position. car has been taken to dealer sevral times and a cause still unknown. dealership changed engine cable harness and reset comuter (apparently settings were scrambled) and car then is functional. last time, car lost power in highway and almost got rear-ended. dangerous.

I have been having repeated issues following the kia theta ii engine recall replacement (sc147) since june 2018. my car is practically new with 53k +/- miles, purchased new, and had all the recommended and required maintenance performed. i took my car to rick case kia (dealer code:ga083) to have my engine replaced midsummer 2018. since then i have been experiencing persistent check engine light (cel) issues for the same engine diagnostic code(p2191). each time i take my car to the dealer for resolution, technicians give me different reasons for what they "think" could be the root issue. thus far, i have been told the issue was due to bad gas, an o2 sensor gone bad, a leak, history code from another dealer not clearing the recall, and now a fuel kit will be replaced. it is my assumption that if kia technicians truly knew what the issue was i would not have so many repeated trips for the same issue. to this date(december 14th 2018) they still have not provided a clear resolution. in light of recent events surrounding kia vehicles, specifically optima, catching on fire and engines randomly blowing up this is something that needs an immediate resolution.it impacts my safety as the vehicle owner and those driving around me. i have expressed how uncomfortable i am driving this car in the current state (with the engine light on) and my concerns are being dismissed. i am told that it is not a drivability issue and i can drive it away with the light on. it should be no surprise why that is not a comforting diagnosis as i have been back about 6-7 times now. i am currently making attempts to engage/escalate this with the kia corporate office. in an attempt to be proactive i am seeking help!

Car losses power suddenly and lurches. this has happend when car is cruising at highway speeds or when started, stationary. once that happens car may have to be restarted to work again. sometimes that works, sometimes it does not. when it persists for a while, maximum speed is about 5 mph if started from a stop. engine warning light comes on and the code p2118 (throttle actuator motor current range) is shown by an obd. the problem has ocurred before. dealer initially changed throttle but problem recurred. the issue was eventually tracked to a faulty engine cable harness. the whole engine harness had to be replaced. however, problem is ocurring again a year later.

Evaporative gas fumes inside and smells like something is burning

Since i have brought my car, the check engine light comes out and also states that i don't have gas in my car... my car hasn't been in any type of accident and it should be this way when the car is still in good condition and well taken care of. i'm not a mechanic and haven't mess with anything for this to be happen.. while driving once i fill up my gas tank. i can drive down the road then all of sudden the car will so no gas and it's empty. the gas light will stay on or flicker off and on... so therefore the check engine light will stay on bc of this. since the check engine light is on, inspection can't be done

Check engine light is on code reads high pressure fuel pump. when starting the car it is very sluggish and has fluttering rpms for the first 10 15 minutes when driving the car is jerky and hesitant to accelerate. there is currently a active recall on the high pressure fuel pump but my vin is not listed under the recall even though it was listed on the engine recall. was told i did not need a new engine but was given an oil change abs new oil pan and the problem started shortly after

Wife and baby use this vehicle. when making a right turn from a stop, vehicle begins to slow and almost stall. have had to pull into bike lanes quickly in order not to be hit from behind. there are 2 occasions when this occurs. 1) when at a stop on a city street, waiting to make a right. foot off pedal, accelerate, engine begins to stall. 2) when rolling into a right turn (on city streets) acceleration causes start of stall process. we have not fully stalled as of yet. but this could be a bad scenario if it does. we have thought about gas vapor issues with the phoenix, az heat being 119 degrees, but if that were the case, it would happen other times and not just during turns. thanks

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia optima. while driving 10 mph, the engine stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the kia dealer (fred anderson kia of raleigh; 9209 glenwood ave, raleigh, nc 27617; (919) 785-4500) where it was diagnosed that the battery, the fuel kit, and the filter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was taken to another kia dealer (chris leith pre-owned superstore; 11000 capital blvd, wake forest, nc 27587; (888) 482-1325) where it was diagnosed that the control valve needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was still with the kia dealer. the manufacturer was contacted at 800-333-4542 and stated that they would get back within 2 or 3 business days. the contact stated that the manufacturer did not call back. the contact also stated that they were not willing to provide a loaner vehicle. case number: 12360215 was provided. the failure mileage was 80,000.

Sometimes when i driving this the engine just turn off ...

Gdi engine burns oil, connecting rod failed. white smoke, and makes weird noise under hood when gets to 60mph

The anti-lock braking system failed on this car. if you would hit a bump in the road while acceleration the car would detect a spinning condition and cause major deceleration being very dangerous when entering a freeway in moderate traffic taking the vehicle from 60+ mph to virtually 40 mph with no warning and no brake lighting to warn approaching traffic. after many visits to kia dealer remained unaddressed until contacting corporate kia and finding a posting on kia optima forum with another user that had same issue and was finally resolved with some hydraulic part replacement that costs $1,600 and was being avoided by dealers. when i brought this to kia corporates attention they agreed to replace with that part which did almost resolve that issue except on rare instances car will still hesitate when encountering a bump on acceleration. after that repair however the anti-lock brakes are now failing with erratic pulsing on hard braking and less effective braking.

Difficult to keep car centered while driving. steering wheel makes a clunking noise and has become jerry with small movements. tendency to pull hard to the left or rights. steering wheel jenks when traveling on error any size bump in road. back up camera cuts in and out. never obtain epaulets fuel milage estimates.

My vehicle has 80k miles on it and is serviced meticulously. i lost all power trying to accelerate onto the freeway and was almost ran down by a dump truck. i was able to limp my vehicle to the kia dealership to find out the problem was the high-pressure fuel pump. i assumed that it would be covered under the 100k warranty only to find out that even though the car won't run without the fuel pump, it is not covered under the powertrain warranty. i can only assume that they have eliminated this problem from warranty because there have been so many cases of high-pressure pump failures on kia's.. i will never buy another kia product!!

Vehicle in reverse backing up on steep driveway, foot on fuel pedal, car began its automated hill holding function, while in reverse, heard high rpm, transmission was slipping into neutral, car began rolling forward, put foot on brake, brake failed, car accelerated rapidly, and engine died, then hit the wall inside the garage. i estimated, speed at time of impact approximately 10 to 15 mph. noticed another entry filed similar to this, had same fuel, brake fail symptoms. *tr

About 1 month ago my fuel pump went out. i have a 2013 kia optima. i was at 62,000 miles when it went out, which meant it was not covered under warranty. i had it replaced at the local dealership, it cost around $800.00 to replace. now less that 2 months later i am having some hesitation and jerking in the car. had the car troubleshoot and it's not the temp sensor. the car is too new for things like this to happened. once i get rid of it, i will never buy another kia, or will i allow my family and friend to. *tr

Fuel will heat up and bubble out of fuel tank after extended periods of idling. 4 hours idling with 3/4 full fuel tank. liquid fuel and vapors escaping from gas cap and dripping down the side of the car.

Intermitenly .car won't start all electronic signals off ,nothing dead . engine ticking after i stop & park it . i hear a loud ticking. burning oil. at least 5 times ,while excelerating car takes off real fast . hard to control ,keep it on the road. pulls to the right. had to replace tires only have 41k miles. paint chips.fobs do not work. i have complained to dealers at least 6-7 times. please note* i purchased vip premier ultimate protection plus & glass coat & teflon interior protection.$ 1850.00 estimate. extra. covers everything i reported.

This has happened three times now, and just the third this past weekend so i am finally writing a complaint. my kia has a faulty map sensor, the dealer says, and when it goes out (about every 2 months) my car completely dies on me; i have no acceleration, brakes lock up and my power steering is gone. this is a very dangerous situation since two of the three occurrences have been on the highway. when it happens, i am forced to yank the steering wheel to a shoulder and let the car come to a stop. sometimes it restarts, sometimes it does not. in all three instances, my car has had to be towed. this is very dangerous for not only me by anyone in the car with me as well as any other kia driver's out there. i have filed my complaint with kia consumer affairs but they do not offer a replacement, just money. while i appreciate the offer, money does not do anything for my confidence in driving the car. it is a brand new car, just one year old. i fear for my life each time i drive my car but i have no other option, i drive a lot for work. all i am seeking is a replacement car, i love the car and all it offers but it does not perform well at all and i am very fearful of this. please help if you can or if you have had similar issues. *tr
