We have classified the 146 complaints from 2008 Jeep Wrangler about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
I just recently bought a new battery and the jeep hadn't have had any issues and the jeep just randomly didn't start. i finally got it to start just to find out it was a key module and program wireless module. after further research this is a regular problem in (07-08 models).
I work on drilling rigs in the north east often in remote locations. after returning to the rig from a trip to town with no issues i let the vehicle sit for two days. upon opting to go to town i went to start the vehicle. i turned the ignition and had all electrical power but nothing to crank the engine. i tested all components i could before coming to the conclusion it was a computer related issue for a jeep dealer. i made the arrangements and towed the vehicle to the dealership 40 mile away. after having the vehicle for a day along with all my fault finding data the dealer called to inform me it was the tipm. after questioning the rep as to the causes of a failure i was told that it unknown but a very common problem. after an expensive repair and 400 miles post repair i have had no further issues.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle started after several attempts. the failure recurred multiple times intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
On or around the 15 april 2015 while pulling into a parking lot the horn and the wiper as well as the washer began to randomly go off and even while the vehicle was completely unattended. i had to physically remove the horn connection to keep the horn from sounding at inopportune times and possibly distracting the drivers around me and causing an accident. the wiper to this day still start to randomly move and the washer squirts at any random time. the horn remains unhooked at this time. the tipm module is suspect in this vehicle for repair. *tr
Airbag light and warning bell goes on and off repeatedly. this seems to be a well documented concern and points towards safety issues extending from non working air bags to a driver distraction. this problem also seems to be indicative of chrysler's quality control and poor customer service.
On my 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags.this has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. this faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. daimler chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying." right hand vehicles have been recalled but not the left like i drive. *tr
This jeep has been nothing but a issue. have been to shops for a year. check engine light wont stay off, wheels shake at certain speeds, over heats, radiator issues, you name it. the dealer would not cover anything and went out of business shortly after. this jeep is a lemon. there has to be recalls on this. jeep is currently at garage again and they are saying possible computer issues again maybe 02 yada. came out of grocery store the other night and the jeep would not start. not the battery. again the garage called and said it may be a electrical issue with the security of the vehicle. just had new plugs and wires installed. this is absurd and there should be recalls on these jeeps. there is definitely safety concerns!!!!!!!! haven't been able to get the engine light off as previously stated and thus still cant get a inspection going on a year! someone please help!!! *tr
Totally integrated power module failure. *tr
Over the last month or so, the air bag light goes on and off at random times. sometimes it will not come on at all and other times it will go on and stay on. also, over the last few days, i've noticed a 'shaking' while driving, starting around 50mph. *tr
Leaving a parking lot all my electrical components began going haywire (wipers came on, wiper fluid started spraying, radio turned on and off, heat turned on and off, horn was blaring, door locks locking/unlocking at random). i removed the keys and the electrical failure continued. i began to smell burning plastic and noticed smoke/flames coming out from under the hood on the passenger side of the vehicle. after opening the engine compartment the fuse box was engulfed in flames. i was able to put the fire out with a fountain drink and a few bottles of water from bystanders. the wiring harness continued to smolder until the battery cable was removed. it is now in the shop to be repaired and will cost me 500 dollars out of pocket for my deductible. thankfully no one was injured or killed and the vehicle wasn't a complete loss. this car also has no after market modifications. *tr
On 4 occasions, my horn and windshield wiper have spontaneously activated. on the most recent occurrence, we were driving at night and the headlights turned off for several seconds. this happened at highway speed but luckily my wife was able to cycle the headlight switch and power returned to the headlights. *tr
Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v631000 (electrical system, visibility) and 16v352000 (air bags). the part needed for the repair was not available. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure. vin tool confirms parts not available. parts distribution disconnect.
After leaving the gym on my lunch break i took (thank god) the not so heavy traffic road to get back to work. my jeep cut off on me while driving. i had to pull over. again my wipers start going and the lights come on and the horn won't stop blaring so i had to open the hood and tap on the fuse box lid. after the 5th attempt the car decided to come on. i do not feel safe driving my vehicle if i am right next to the emergency lane. this has to stop and should be a recall. i have a child and this is very not safe. the same incident happened to me last week coming down a busy street. again blessed i was near the driveway of a business i did not get into an accident and pulled over waiting for my jeep to decide when it wanted to start again. why is this not a recall? i took my jeep several months back to the dealer and was without transportation for 2 weeks before they got to looking at it and stated they could not find the problem and sent it back home to me. please investigate this issue as i am not the only person this has been happening to. *tr
2008 jeep wrangler sahara trail rated horn, locks, wiper fluid will come on while driving down the road for no apparent reason, causing other drivers to stop or look around due to the horn going off and the driver of the jeep cannot see due to the water being sprayed all over the windshield unexpectedly. the only way to stop this is to pull over and pull the fuses or battery terminals once you get home. this is a serious safety issue. *tr
Jeep wrangler still acts up with electronics. after picking up some grocery as i open my passenger door my horn, both wipers, washer fluid spraying out, and lights started going haywire. everything turned on all at once. i jumped in and tried starting it up maybe rest what ever short my be experiencing, i was able to start it but continue to go haywire as i turned off the ignition, it continue to run. i jumped out to pop the hood and pulled a fuse. the engine stopped and car stopped going haywire. i waited about 10 mins before replacing the fuse. jeep wrangler still honks horn (beep) and wipers shift a little in the morning when i open the driver door. should i be concern that this malfunction will cause a fire or possible harm? *tr
While driving, the airbag light started flashing and an audible chime went off each time the light flashed. the light and chime would appear about every 5 minutes. i took my vehicle in for service and found out that the problem was the airbag clock spring. i also found out that there has been a recall on rhd vehicles of this same model for the airbag clock spring. after researching the problem, i found out that there have been numerous reports of this problem for lhd vehicles with no recall. are they only recalling the rhd vehicles because majority of them are driven by government employees, and they expect everyone else to pay $600 to have this problem fixed? *tr
While driving at night car went berserk lights started flashing, horn continuous sounding, wipers both front and back continue to stay on while shooting washer fluid. as tried to accelerate to get off the freeway i experience lost of power and steering. i was able to make it to the side of the freeway and turned the ignition off and on several times hoping to rest the problem, but only continue for about 30 mins and then stop. *tr
My jeep was missing and before it caught fire it started lunging real bad i stop the jeep and got out because i heard crackling and i looked and saw it was on fire. i called the fire department and it burned completely. *tr
My 08 jeep wrangler only has 64.000 miles on it and my son drives it,the horn and wipers would go off at random,i am just glad he was not on the interstate when this happened, that could cause anyone to wreck i took it to the dealer and the tipm was bad,i have looked into this and found out this is a problem part with this model, this is a major safety problem and i do not understand why this part has not been recalled. if there is anything you can do please let me know. *tr
I was dropping my kids off at school and my car went crazy my horn went off, alarm went off and windshield wipers both front and back spraying the fluid all over people not on my windows. i took my keys out of the car and it continued. the principle wandered why i was honking at the other cars and spraying the kids it not only was embarrassing but the fluid could of easily got in kids eyes. *tr
Vehicle will not start. turning the key in the ignition causes a click. electrical is working, as all dashboard lights are on and bright. by pushing on the transmission lever or moving it into neutral and back the vehicle will then start. there does not seem to be a specific condition (hot or cold) that makes this better or worse. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled. the air bag and mil warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was able to restart, but the failure recurred twice. the dealer stated that the tipm module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 80,000.
September of 2014 last year i noticed the airbag malfunction light come on. i called my local jeep chrysler dealer and left a few messages about recalls and if this meant a problem with my airbags. no one ever called me back after 2 weeks of waiting the airbag malfunction light went off and it would stay off for weeks and mysteriously come on periodically. so after a few months go by in december of 2014 i was at a supermarket parking lot with my wife and three children when we pulled into a parking space amd thw horn, lights, wipers and dash lit up. i quickly disconnected the neg battery and reconnected it two or three times and it stoppped. i looked online for similar problems and disconmected the horn amp via fusebox. jumpstart to feb 2015 while on the highway the horn blares and wipers go off but the vehicle turns off and i glided to the breakdown lane while other cars avoided me. 5/27/2015 my wife opened the jeep door and it triggered the wipers, dash lights and wiper fluid to spray. when you're on a fixed income bringing your vehicle in for repairs is not always feasable. i took the jeep to autozone free diagnostic and got a code u0141. after reading the similar stories we're going into the dealership for repairs.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. while driving approximately 15 mph, the windshield wipers and fluid operated independently, the horn sounded, the engine fan operated, and all four doors locked continuously. the failure recurred numerous times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000.
This happened on 76th st north, between whirlpool dr and lakewood ave. owasso, ok. i was driving to work, at t 5:45 am, i smelled smoke, looked out my drivers side door and saw a orange glow. i opened the door and saw flames coming out from the engine. i stopped, got out and called 911. *tr
While driving on the highway, the airbag light goes on and off intermittently. the horn also does not work at all. i took it to the local mechanic to have the horn fixed, and was informed it was a bad clock-spring. chrysler has extended the warranty for the rh 2008 wranglers and all 2007 wranglers, but the warranty for the lh 2008 wranglers, like mine, has not been extended to be replaced. this is a major safety issue as the horn does not work, and i am unsure if my airbag will deploy, if needed. there is clearly an issue as there are a flood of complaints. it is time for the nhtsa to step in and get this taken care of. i don't feel i should have to pay $500.00 to have the clock-spring fixed when it is an obvious issue across the line in the 2007 and 2008 models. i should also mention that i have also experienced the "death wobble" which is what was the initial issue which had me take the jeep into the shop. over this past year, the jeep would just start shaking violently at about 55 mph every once in a while. this last time, i pulled over to the side of the road, turned off the jeep and tried again, only to have it start shaking violently again. this is a major issue that needs addressed. i could have been killed as there were vehicles on the freeway all around me. i could barely control the vehicle to pull it off the road. the mechanic replaced the steering stabilizer, the calipers, and the rotors to alleviate the problem. interestingly, when i walked in to talk to them, they knew exactly what it was as they have had similar complaints that needed repairs for the same vehicle and problem from other customers. this was a $350.00 repair. i point this second issue out so other jeep owners will know what to have repaired if chrysler does nothing. *tr
Driving home after work at night on the interstate, approx. 75mph, the windshield washer and wipers come on and the horn starts blowing continuously and wont stop, i pulled off on the closest freeway exit and pulled off the road and shut off the engine, but even with removing the key from the ignition switch it continued to run with the washers, wipers and horn going....after several attempts turning the ignition switch on and off the motor finally stopped running but the washers, wipers and horn continued until i disconnected the battery...after reconnecting the battery everything went back to normal and functioned normally for several months, but recently has started acting like its possessed again...took it to the local dealer(chapmen dodge and they were unable to find any issue even after i told them it sounds like the tipm ,and from what i have researched this is an ongoing issue with chrysler, they said they would replace it for $1000 but it may not be the problem..... *tr
Several issues with the vehicle: 1. "death wobble" vehicle intermittently shakes violently over 45 mph. stop vehicle and starts running fine. 2. suspect bad tipm. intermittent horn and wipers turn on after opening driver door. next, car sometimes will not start. tapping the tipm will allow it to start. next with ignition off and key out, engine continues to run until tapping the module. finally, now the engine will just stop intermittently while driving down the road. found that both of these issues are common problems with jeeps. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start on the first attempt. after several attempts, the vehicle was able to restart. the dealer stated that the starter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
Since i purchased this jeep, it intermittently will not start--typically in warm weather. we replaced the ground on the battery, purchased new battery, starter, neutral safety switch and all transmission sensors. still, it will not start in warm weather. we literally have to wait until the outside temperature cools, then the jeep will start. i researched the issue on-line and found many consumer references to this problem for this vehicle--commonly referred to as "the jeep flu." many report either the neutral safety switch or the tipm is the issue. many references complain that chrysler is fully aware of the problem--tipms on back order--but they are silent. this jeep has stranded us many times--which can also cause significant harm for consumers. chrysler should acknowledge this problem and provide a fix! *tr
My jeep ignition switch will not go back in the lock position to allow you too pull the key out of the ignition however you can pull the key straight out.i have a brand new never used key and the ignition will not allow it to slide all the way in the jeep still starts and shuts off however you have too disconnect your battery or it will drain the battery down. also now you can not lock the vehicle. *tr
I bought the 2008 jeep wrangler in september 2007. i follow the service manual and take my jeep for every scheduled service at the jeep dealership. my jeep started failing to start in 2010. i reported the issue at my 36,000 mile service on 23 november 2010 and was told that the service department could not isolate the problem. i have reported this issue on several services but was always told that the service department could not isolate the issue. finally when i take the jeep in for the 72,000 mile service the fault was identified and is currently under repair. if this has been a known issue why was i not notified of the problem by jeep. i have been stranded on more that one occasion because the vehicle failed to start and i have been driving around for four years with a tipm that could have failed causing injury to me or my family. i am very upset that jeep has known about these issues and i was not informed that there was an issue with this tipm when i reported the jeep was having electrical problems. i had to stumble across a web site reporting this issue with the tipm, this is how i found out that this is a known issue that jeep has failed to acknowledge. *tr
Pulling out of a parking space the other day and a red airbag light appeared on my dash indicating some sort of airbag fault, also cruise control and horn stopped working. further research showed that the clock springs are a common failure among jeep wranglers thus making the airbags non operational until repair is made. *tr
First incident occurred when i put the jeep in reverse; the horn blew until it was taken out of reverse. the wipers came on and stayed on for the whole trip into work (1 hour) the windshield washer motor also ran. engine light and airbag light came on. since that time there are intermittent occurrences of doors locking and unlocking on their own. wipers and washer turn on by themselves, headlights both went out in july horn wouldn't shut off, then the doors wouldn't unlock and when they did the wipers turned on. every couple of weeks the jeep would lose power and stall. i have asked several ase certified mechanics their opinion and all say the same...tcim
In may 2014 i purchases a used jeep from a dealer in kernersville, nc and experienced issues with the vehicle the dealership claims are manufacture issues: -lighting: we have had to replace the taillight bulbs on both sides twice since purchase (less than a year ago). these lights constantly hold water and we have to empty them repeatedly and the water never seems to empty completely. these lights also seem to be affected by wiring as they do not always illuminate despite an effective bulb. we took it in for repairs under our purchased warranty and the dealership states there is water damage due to insufficient wire protection. this is very concerning as water is an excellent conductor of electricity. regardless of the used condition of the car i see no reason why this should be the case as wiring seems very much like a manufacture only responsibility. -wheels: the vehicle was purchased with all original wheels (not tires) and the valve stems on each wheel have disintegrated completely and crumbled apart. we realized this when the low air light came on and we went to fill the tires this issue seems to effect how well the tires can hold air. -speedometer: originally when we purchased the vehicle the speedometer was off by about 10mph (we did not know this until driving two separate cars and thinking "hmm is the other driver really speeding that much?" call one another on the phone and determined the subaru would drive 60mph and see what speed the jeep claimed to be driving when matched. we had this issue "fixed" about two weeks ago and now it is even worse. upon doing the same speed test the jeep was now 12mph over what it should be. other issues non-resolved by dealership: rattling sound near clutch, less than awesome braking, and a tire light that will not go off no matter what actions are taken. *tr
On may 29th of 2014 i was driving my 2008 jeep wrangler down a 4 lane city street at about 3000 rpm. i had just taken off from a red light when i heard a loud explosion that resulted in a fire underneath the vehicle. the gas tank exploded and the fire covered the bottom of the entire vehicle. there was damage under the hood on the engine side of the firewall on what appeared to be fuel lines. luckily there was a quick response by the fire department who quickly extinguished the fire, but my jeep has been rendered un-drivable. i have contacted both chrysler and the dealership but not assistance there. the chrysler investigation team would not even take a look at the fuel lines the marshal determined started the fire. i will never feel safe in this vehicle or any other vehicle produced by chrysler ever again. luckily there was no personal injury to me, but only because i had all the doors and top off which enabled a rapid escape. please take a serious look a these wranglers and force chrysler to take action before someone is seriously injured or even killed. *tr
I just pulled out of quick trip after putting $60 in gas in and right about 35 mph around 1500rpm i heard a loud "pop" the jeep shut down, then flames came from both sides of my jeep, almost burning my leg. (i had the doors and top off the vehicle.) *tr
The air bag light keeps going on an off. i had it checked at the dealer and they stated it was the clockspring that was bad. this is not is not covered under the lifetime powertrain warranty or my lifetime added care plus warranty that i purchased. this is a safety item and should be fixed by chrysler. *tr
The airbag indicator light on the instrument cluster illuminated. the obdii code reader validated the presence of a airbag system fault. apparently a "clock spring" in the steering wheel fails and causes faults in the airbag system.the jeep dealer says 2007 "clock spring" is covered under recall but 2008 "clock spring is not covered under recall. i believe that emergency restraint systems are covered under all circumstances for a certain amount of years of date of manufacture. *tr
Horn doesn't work, i also get an unknown ding warning sound in the dash, i am afraid my airbag may not work as well. the clockspring must be broken. *tr
Airbag light illuminated due to clockspring failure. *tr
When the ignition key was turned to on, the starter only gave a click. after several attempts it started. the dealer did a diagnostic and found nothing. the problem continued and became more frequent and severe to the point it wouldn't start after numerous attempts. the starter was replaced with no results, problem continued. from online forums on jeep i found this to be a widespread problem. it was suggested to put the automatic transmission in the neutral position and try. if it starts, the problem is a faulty transmission range sensor. putting it neutral when this occurs, has started the engine the first try dozens of times for me. i took the jeep to the dealer, gave them this information which they ignored. they replaced a solenoid cable instead. the problem continued. returned to the dealer for another diagnostic, they kept the vehicle for 2 days while i rented a vehicle. nothing was found or fixed in their diagnostic when i picked it up. the problem continues, it did it today twice 6/25/2014, but still starts in neutral for now. the suggested transmission range sensor would be covered in my lifetime powertrain warranty. i believe jeep knows there is a problem but chooses to ignore it. this seems to effect wrangler models from 2007- 2012 years. it is so widespread it should be a recall issue. starting in neutral is not a fix. *tr
Air bag light came on. was caused by a defective clock spring. this is a known defect on the wrangler since recall was done on 2007 jeep wrangler and 2008 rhd jeep wrangler. *tr

The totally integrated power module (tipm) is faulty as it is in many wranglers of this year. on a regular basis, the horn will engage continuously, the wipers turn one, the spray nozzle sprays fluid, the radio occasionally will turn off, the headlights turn off (driving hazard at night), and the doors lock sometimes. all of this happens at the same time. you can turn the key off and take it out and the engine continues to run and the problems continue to occur until you either unhook the battery or knock on top of the tipm. sometimes the vehicle will not start. code given is u0141 which is "loss of communication with the front control module (tipm)." this is a very well known issue with the late 2007 and 2008 years of the wrangler model. it is a faulty product installed by chrysler and many dealerships recognize the issue. chrysler refuses to issue a recall for the problem.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. when the ignition was turned to the on position, the front windshield wiper activated, the headlights illuminated, the vehicle would not shift out of the park position, and the horn sounded without warning. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the totally integrated power module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
The airbag light blinks off and on and dings all the time. the clock spring is broken. *tr

Jeep wrangler 2008 experiences intermittent airbag light on. appears to occur when wheels are not pointed straight ahead. intermittent loss of horn. suspect defective clockspring. *tr
