We have classified the 61 complaints from 2003 Jeep Liberty about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Power windows failing to stay up due to faulty regulators: two years ago the rear left window of my 2003 liberty fell into the door casing. when using the atomatic buttons, the window would not go up and the window motor would simply attempt to raise the window with no success. upon taking it to the jeep dealer, they stated the window regulator neeeded to be replaced. after paying $227.94, my window was fixed and back to normal. surprisingly, a few months later, the right window fell while driving on the highway (this is a major safety issue). back to the same dealership we went, for a second and unnecessary diagnostic (the maintence man said this was a problem he had frequently seen) to determine the regulator was broken. i paid to have the second window fixed and continued to drive my car. this week, the left rear window fell again while driving down the street in my neighborhood (20 mph). i contacted jeep headquarters directly after researching online (inculding the nhtsa website) that this is clearly not an isolated incident and they have neglected to address the saftey issue with their automobile owners. they are requesting that i take my jeep back in for another diagnostic, and to confirm there has been no "neglect" of maintenance on my part. my jeep has just over 65,000 miles ' it is in perfect condition with the exception of faulty windows. upon inspection of the dealer this week, jeep says they will determine the next step depending on the results. this issue is dangerous for multiple reasons - children riding in the car, the frightening noise made from the dropping window, lack of security when parking the car/at a stop, weather (rain, hail, snow, etc.), drivers startled by the drop and attempting to assess the situation while driving, etc. according to jeep headquarters via phone, they dishonestly claim to be unaware of the situation. *tr
My power windows broke in the back seat of my 2003 jeep liberty. *tr
Transmission hesitates / lurches randomly. car stalls out, increasingly frequently despite repairs. when engine cuts out, lose all power steering brakes etc - so far only at low speeds but progressively worse - seems very similar to jeep commander recall at higher speeds. rpm needle goes wild after engine cuts out. can restart and limp a few miles, then need tow - 2x towed in 1 week, 3x towed in 2 months, and 4 trips to shop without results. car currently stuck upstate ny where i was trying to vacation -and chrysler/jeep not so cooperative. there's plenty evidence of stalling problems on internet for 4-5 years - see edmunds. theories: deceleration / rpms below 1000 make engine cut out. solenoid is pulling battery amps =12 and causing havoc in ignition system, short-circuiting sensors. thermal computer module damage. computer scans for diagnostic codes definitely not reliable. by relying only on computer module for diagnosis, dealers are only making the problem worse because they are sending cars back out without fixing root problem, causing more damage. i had wheel sensor found corroded 6/3, crank sensor fail 8/6 and cam sensor failed 8/10. sensors don't fail sequentially nor so fast. something is causing sensors to fail. and while sensors not working they are causing damage of their own...computer, ignition coils (all 6 needed repair in 1 case where burned out). who knows if the spark plugs, fuel pumps, injection cleans, and throttle body cleans work or not. (some say tb cleanout is important if stalls are at lower speeds - less air inflow). battery seemed to have issues too soon - may be related. one case where harness wiring rubbed against rear something causing probs. my speedometer broke after 1 sensor repair. separately (unless water and corrosion are the real culprits) brakes and rotors wearing out - replaced 2x in 40k miles. not right. some blog on that, too. *tr
My fan blower just works on high. my engine light always on. rusting back doors. i have been waiting for recalls. i love my jeep!!!! but jeep needs to fix multiple problems. it sucks that failed components does not let you list specific parts. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. when the rear window was opened and/or closed, the cable snapped and both rear windows fractured. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the details of the repairs were unknown. the approximate mileage was 52,000. the vin was not available. updated 11/19/15*lj *cn
My wife was driving her 2003 jeep liberty in traffic approaching a stop light. she bumped into the car in front of her traveling at about 10 mph. it was such a minor bump that the air bags did not deploy. the vehicle burst into flames from the engine compartment she barely had enough time to escape. the car is a total loss and the car is completely burnt out inside. *nm
Window regulators keep on failing. i have had to replace the regulator in each window at least once, and 2 of them have been replaced more than once. i am about to replace my 7th regulator. 3 months ago the regulator failed on my driver's side - back seat door. it got itself hung in the door panel and couldn't open the door, so had to take it to the garage to get fixed. this is not the first complaint, nor the last so something should be done to resolve these issues. the regulator itself still worked, but the housing the chain stays in would break and cause the chain to come out the door panel, and knock the window off its track and damage the glass!
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact stated that the speedometer failed intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who performed a diagnostic that located the failure at the speedometer sensors. the local mechanic replaced three sensors and the speedometer worked for one year before failing again. the contact was concerned because he was unable to determine at what speed he was traveling. the dealer was contacted and they advised that the failure would need to be diagnosed to determine how to repair the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was not available and the current mileage was 79,554.
I have an '03 jeep liberty and 2 years after we bought it, we started having trouble with the ignition cylinder. it started to freeze up and would not turn some times, until it got to the place it would not turn at all. so we took it to dade jeep chrysler in south miami,fl..and so they replace the ignition cylinder and tunblers [supposedly]. and that was in '05 and here we are in '08, and we're having the same identical problem again. and their telling me i have to buy another ignition. the jeep is just 5yrs. old. i can remember when something like that would last the life of the vehicle. *tr
Dt: on september 19, 2005 smelled gas when the vehicle stalled, but it did turn over. the vehicle had been sitting for two days . consumer got back into vehicle and smelled gas again, however, consumer drove the vehicle, and then parked it for about an hour and that was when the air pressure cover blew out and the air filter was held down with metal clamps. it cut the installation in the hood of the car. had it towed to a local mechanic. they replaced the air filter, two crank sensor cams, six spark plugs, one map sensor, one injector, and air box and six ignition coils. consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they said that the consumer should have taken the vehicle taken it to a local dealer, and they will not reimburse the consumer. the service engine light was on and rmps were going up and down. *ak
While i was approaching an intersection (the speed limit was 45 mph), i tried to apply the brakes and they were locked. my steering was also locked that i couldn't turn. thank god the signal just turned green for me as i coasted right through it and finally came to a stop on its own. i am very unhappy with this vehicle. i could have been in a serious accident, or better yet, dead! i no longer feel safe in this vehicle. my lease is up in 11 months and i will no longer purchase a daimler chrysler vehicle. *ak
We bought this truck and 3 days later the speed sensor went out in it. it was still under warranty so we took it to the dealer and they fixed it. about 7 months later the same thing went out. i have had this truck for about 3 years and we have put 4 speed sensors in it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact stated that when attempting to start the vehicle, the ignition would seize and the steering wheel could not be turned. also, when driving approximately 5 -25 mph, there was an abnormal clicking heard from the steering column. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised the contact that the ignition needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred approximately four months later. the vehicle was repaired a second time but the repairs were made by the contact. the failure mileage was approximately 43,000. the vin was unavailable.
I have a jeep liberty limited 2003 leased on october 2002. ive had to bring the vehicle in for service seven times for the same problem and the dealer has not repaired it. the problem is that while driving at speeds anywhere from 30 - 65 and while trying to accelerate from a complete stop the vehicle will start to buck and hesitate, the speedometer will swing back and forth and the vehicle suddenly loses speed and then regains it. i've almost been hit by another vehicle on the palisades parkway on three separate occasions. the failure started on april 28,2004 at 32,000 miles it now has 34,600 miles and it has reoccurred after all seven times of going in for repair of same condition after the dealership at central ave chrysler jeep in yonkers, claims to have repaired it. the dealership will not honor the warranty by properly repairing or replacing vehicle. *ak
While driving at any speed automatic transmission shifted from any gear to neutral. dealer on different occasions replaced the computer, and automatic transmission. but problem still persists. *ak
I own a 2003 jeep liberty that was purchased in february, 2003 and currently has 10,000 miles on it. it has stalled 9 times over the last year. the stalling occurs at speeds anywhere from idle to 65 miles an hour. it has serviced by two different dealerships on six different occasions. they have been unable to find the problem. it is currently not drivable and is sitting at a dealership in stamford, ct. the last incident took place while driving at 65 miles an hour on i-95. the car began to jerk and eventually stalled leaving me without steering and putting my family at great risk. *jb
We were awoken at 3 in the morning to the car on fire. one of the officers who we spoke with is very determined that the fire started in the engine with the electrical. *ph
While exiting red light the consumer vehicle oil light came on, then all the lights on the dash came on. power steering went out and all controls. all power off. car would start briefly and cut off. car was totaled. dealer notified. *ak *cb
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact stated that there was an intermittent electrical short that progressed for years. the vehicle was taken to an independent dealer and the authorized dealer, but neither were able to replicate or diagnose the failures more than once. the contact continued to experience the failure in which the vehicle stalled several times and had to be restarted to reset the computer. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the instrument cluster twice, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was also included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v046000 (air bags) and the dealer was unable to determine when the part and the permanent remedy would become available to schedule the recall repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was less than 5.
Computer failure, engine cut off, interior lights, five window motors and glass..car should be recalled..safety issues. *tr
