We have classified the 44 complaints from 2002 Jeep Liberty about EXTERIOR LIGHTING into the following categories.
Headlights will shut off while driving at night. while driving at night the headlights will intermittently shut themselves off and then turn back on approximately 10 to 15 seconds later. i have tried switching the lights completely off and back on to see if the headlights began working but they did not. i have searched the web and this site and found multiple complaints with no resolution or recall. this is a serious safety issue as there is no way to immediately correct the issue while driving or predict when it will occur. the vehicle is in motion when this occurs. the lights will come back on and stay on for a little while and then shut back off again. sometimes they will flash from low beams to high beams and then shut off which makes it dangerous for the cars that are driving towards me. this has happened on several occasions so far and at this point i am scared to drive at night.
The headlights will go off while driving, so far they have come back on within 5 seconds, however, that is a long time without lights. i purchased the car used about 5 months ago so i do not know whether it was happening to the prior owner. it has happened 6 times since the beginning of september 2015. this car was purchased for my daughter who is turning 16y/o in october. the is dangerous for an experienced driver let alone a new driver. this issue is all over the internet dating back to at least 2008. why has nothing been done.
I was pulling out of my driveway and the car just shut completely off and i was stuck in the middle of the road. about 10 mins later, it started back up again and drove normally. this is not safe at all and if i was driving on the road, i could have died. i'm scared to drive this car now and i can't afford to go to a mechanic and pay thousands of dollars. from looking online, this is a recurring problem with this car. there should be a recall on this issue. someone can really lose their life over this.
I received two recall notices from jeep in the fall of 2014 for the defective design for the gas tank location on my jeep liberty. i spoke to the local dealer last fall after getting the second notice. i knew it was a waste of time to contact them after only the first mailed notification, since i knew there wouldn't be parts available. i spoke to the dealer on a visit in the fall after the second mailed notification and the local dealer told me the parts would not be available for quite some time. i left them my name and asked them to contact me if the parts were availabel. in january of 2015, i contacted the local dealer again and they chuckled and told me the parts were not available but they could put me on the growing list they kept at the dealership. so i had not even made it onto the local dealer waiting list yet! to make matters worse, i got a call a week later from a chrysler warranty customer center. i called back after the second call and told them that the dealer had laughed at me just two weeks before when i had asked if the parts were available. in addition to the defective gas tank location, my jeep also has the air bags that can inadvertently inflate (supposedly with a few seconds of warning if you happen to be looking at the dashboard and notice a warning light). i got that recall fixed (a very low cost jumper) last fall. i understand that now my jeep may also have a defective trw airbag inflator. i suspect this was the issue all along but chrysler took the cheapest possible route (a jumper). lastly, i have submitted a formal complaint on the nhtsa web site concerning my headlights going off by themselves while driving at night. they have done this multiple times and normally come back on within 5 seconds. there are many other complaints for this issue on the nhtsa site and yet there has been no recall for this without warning issue. *js
When returning home from work one evening, my headlights flickered on and off and then completely shut off. i heard a clicking sound down in the dashboard which may have been a relay. after pulling over to the side of the road, i opened my driver's side door and noticed my dome light was out as well. my dashboard lights stayed on while my headlights and dome light was off. this same incident has happened more than 8-10 times. the flickering of headlights annoys drivers ahead of me and i'm concerned they will become raged, not to mention the danger of the headlights going off while driving. i had a jeep dealership investigate and perform a diagnostic test and nothing surfaced. i had them replace the low beam relay since i had read several reports of this same problem on the web and some guessed it may be the relay. well, i can tell you that the problem is not resolved after replacing the low beam relay as the headlights are still going off. nhtsa, please investigate this problem before someone is seriously hurt. *tr
The vehicle has been exhibiting issues with the ignition switch similar to others such as the gm chevrolet cobalt and saturn ion. when the ignition switch is rotated to the start/crank position and the vehicle starts and the key is released it sometimes does not fully return to the on/run position from the start crank position. although the engine is running and the vehicle can be driven some electrical function are offline due to the ignition switches failure to really return to the on/run position. the situation is not usually noticed until the vehicle is in motion and one the effected systems is used (turn signal, hvac, radio) systems that are effected and not receiving power are turn signals, radio, airbag, hvac. the switch can be moved into the on/run position and these systems then come on-line. this is a dangerous situation and may result in an accident (signal lamps not working, hvac defogger not working) or possible airbag non-deployment in a crash (possible injury or fatality). this issue has occurred at least 3 times in the last two weeks. the vehicle in question is in immaculate condition and well maintained by an ase certified master auto technician> the vehicle has no significant accident or damage history. *tr
After picking up my car from the dealer after it was there for the recall work of putting a hitch on the rear of the car for a safety recall, while driving home in the dark my car lights started to flash then shut off completely, i pulled over on the side of the highway turned off the car then restarted it and once again after 10 minutes of driving the lights shut off so i had to drive home with no headlights at all. i called the dealer the next day and was given the run around that i would have to pay for it to be checked. i only drive the car during the day now because i am afraid of it occurring again. *js
I was driving my vehicle down the highway when my vehicle made a loud popping sound that sounded like it came through the stereo system. i noticed all power to my car went out. the radio, lights, dash, headlights, everything shut off. i went and tried everything. i thought maybe a fuse had blown, not the case. i replaced head lamps, and the lights still didn't work. i changed my steering switch out and have since figured out it must be an electrical issue? i have read many many pages about people with this same issue or very similar. i can no longer drive the vehicle at this time because i don't feel safe in it and its not street safe. *tr

On two or three occasions, while driving at night with the headlights on, without warning my headlights and park lights have shut off by themselves. the lights will usually be off for approximately 5 - 10 seconds and then come back on by themselves. the events seem to happen randomly and without warning. *tr
When driving with the headlights on, lights begin flashing off and on, along with a clicking noise such as a relay. after a minute or so they finally stay on solid. this is very scary and dangerous on a dark road, and confusing to oncoming traffic! we took the car to a jeep dealer who found no defect. i called chrysler and they have no information of this happening. however there are numerous entries on the internet describing this same issue, including this web site. chrysler clearly does not want to own up to this extreme safety issue! *tr
All lights (interior and exterior) go off without warning. they come back on, but it's pretty scary when you're driving at night in traffic at 65 mph. the issue is becoming more frequent - isn't temperature related (happens in winter and summer), can happen soon after starting vehicle or after 60 minutes of driving, is not related to rough road surface or crossing a railroad crossing. has been to jeep dealer twice - both times dealer stated they couldn't repeat the issue and sent the car back without fixing it. if you google - 2002 jeep liberty headlight problems this issue comes up frequently. you'd be amazed. this vehicle is driven daily by my daughter. it has never been involved in any kind of an accident. originally, i just wanted it fixed - it scares my daughter to drive it. now it's scaring me. should this vehicle be recalled? it's been recalled for a rear trailer hitch and has never had a trailer hitch. now, i want the car made safe. check the website, contact jeep - this is a more common problem than you might think. thank you for listening. *tr
While vehicle's headlights and driving lights are on a clicking sound is heard and the lights flash on and off. it sometimes occurs multiple times. this has been an ongoing issue and while researching have found many others with similar problem. *tr

The airbag light on my daughters jeep liberty remains on at all times. *tr
I began having problems with the electrical system in august. headlights flicker on and off at will, as well as interior lights. passenger side headlamp won't come on at all now and interior lights continue to flicker. while pulling into my driveway, passenger side front tire completely separated from the vehicle, leaving me speechless. we have been the only owners of this vehicle and weren't notified of any recalls. hoping we can get this repaired soon...... *tr
Headlights flash on and off randomly. hear a clicking/flickering sound on dashboard when it happens. happens fast--flicker off and then back on within a couple of seconds. *tr
Where to begin? my airbag light has been coming on for months while driving. i took it to a chrysler dealership 6 months ago & was charged $100 for them to tell me they didn't know what was wrong. about a month ago, while driving on the highway, my headlights went out, came back on, went out again, and finally i hit my high beams and they stayed on. my engine uses about 2 quarts of oil per week. i have parked on clean surfaces & there is no oil leaking, but it is going somewhere. i can hear a ticking noise coming from the engine area. i called chrysler's toll-free number today after the headlights went out again, and was informed that my jeep is under recall for the air bag module, and maybe that is what is causing the lights to go out. this makes no sense to me that one would have anything to do with the other. i told them that i have seen other complaints about the headlights, but they stated that they've had no complaints. i have also replaced front tires three times in the past year for wear on the outside edge. i've had the jeep aligned, tires rotated as they should be, and they just keep balding on the outer edge. the service tech said that jeeps eat through tires because of the wheel base? this car has all but eaten up most of my income. it is constantly having issues, and i get nowhere with chrysler. *tr
On 3-16-12, speedometer, headlights, power locks stop functioning. the car turn off on its own. airbag signal come on and off. checked all fuses and there is no problem there. connected it to an obdii reader and nothing if found. *tr
The light flash on and off. air bag light still on, the power window of bag door don,t work, the rear cargo door don,t open, the stopper rubber close the shock absorber (front) blow away, etc etc etc are factory defects all, the liberty is a junk, the cia should take back and refund the money. *tr
While driving my 2002 jeep liberty, the high beam lights click on and off automatically for a few seconds. this has happened a few times on different dates. now recently i was going around a corner and my interior lights came on, then shut off. also (may be unrelated) when i turn the volume up or down on the radio the power to the radio/cd unit shuts off then comes back on. *tr
The headlights turn off for up to 2 seconds while i am driving. the pattern seems to occur at all different speeds and may or may not be associated with using the turning signals or the act of turning. i tried replacing the headlight relay, and that did not fix the problem. it seems to be getting worse, and i worry that it will get so bad i will not be able to drive at night. i currently suspect a problem with the multifunction switch or simply a loose wire somewhere. on one occasion, my interior lights turned on while i was driving on the expressway at night and not touching the multifunction stalk at all-not sure if that is related, and again, it only happened once. this is a safety hazard and a hassle. i'm constantly worried that i will be pulled over for flashing my headlights or that i'll be driving blind when an animal runs out in front of me. *tr
While the headlights are on in my 2002 jeep liberty they randomly flicker off and on. it's not just one quick click off and on, but it is always a random, numerous pattern of fast clicks off and on. furthermore, you can not force the replication. this is a huge safety hazard. sometimes a car turning left in front of me thinks i'm signaling them to go ahead in front of me. other times at night, the lights just go off for a few seconds and you are driving blind. *kb
Headlights will flash on and off while driving. headlight and tail light bulbs all burn out at once. interior lights flash on and off while driving. back up light switch quit working. *tr

Headlights of 2002 jeep liberty sport have been blinking on and off at random intervals while in use for approximately 3 weeks. a sound inside similar to the sound heard when driver turns the headlights on occurs each time the headlights blink. while in operation, headlights will blink on and off 4 or more times during a 6 mile drive. was told by jeep dealership that there was no recall and they were unable to find the issue during a diagnostic. *tr
2002 jeep liberty. bought new. one owner. at approx 70,000 miles headlights began turning off and on by themselves at random - no pattern whatsoever. may do it several times daily for a week and then not at all for a month. very dangerous at night due to suddenly you are driving in the dark and also other drivers (or even worse police officers) think you are flashing your lights at them. no one has been able to duplicate, find, or fix this problem. now at 81,000 miles and have to try and drive mostly during the day - very inconvenient and not always possible. i have read many complaints about the same problem so there needs to be a recall and this needs to be fixed asap. *tr
Headlights switch off without intermittently, without command, at random intervals when driving. appears to occur in conjunction with, or shortly after, using the turn signal. nothing has yet been done to correct the failure, though i am told the problem is caused by a defective multifunction turn stalk. *tr

Headlights frequently turn themselves off then back on when i have them on, such as at night or in the rain. *tr
The lights on my jeep liberty turn completely off while driving. the driver must turn on and off the lights to get them to come back on. there is a clicking sound when the problem occurs as if the lights are turning off based on a timer or something. hard to reproduce this issue, therefore its been hard to diagnose.

Jeep liberty headlights turn on and off while driving down the road at night. headlights have repeatedly been blinking on and off for 2 weeks now. *tr
Without warning the body control module shorts out draining the battery and damaging the multi-control switch on the steering column. causing the headlights, interiorlights, running lights, windshield wipers, factory electric door locks, and dashboard lights to fail. this can cause a fire resulting in a total vehicle loss or loss of lighting at night while driving causing the driver to loose sight of the road. in rain conditions loss of wipers during driving would cause loss of visibility creating a dangerous driver on the road. *tr
