We have classified the 483 complaints from 2002 Jeep Liberty about AIR BAGS into the following categories.
While driving 40 mph the vehicle hit a large patch of deep slush which pulled the vehicle off the road. as a result the vehicle hit a tree head on. the vehicle air bags did not deploy and the seat belt did not properly restrain the driver. the driver hit her head on the dash and experienced swelling in her left knee, a stiff neck, headaches and bruising of the left leg and forearm. the manufacturer indicated the air bags performed as designed since the damage to the vehicle was centered on the left side of the vehicle. *mr *nlm *jb
Seat belt and air bag failure during head-on collision.*jb

A head on collision involving a 2002 jeep liberty (vehicle in question) and a late model honda civic, both vehicles moving at approx. 20 mph. collision resulted in front end damage of both vehicles. jeep liberty front driver and passenger airbags did not deploy.
I lost control of the vehicle two days after purchase in the rain while trying to make a right hand turn. the vehicle went straight through the intersection, up and over the curb and into someones front yard. reported to the dealership. two months later i had my second experience that also happened in the rain. i was trying to come to a stop at a stop sign and could not stop the car. at this time i took the car back to the dealership and they said there was nothing found. the service director at the time referred to it as operator error and thought that i would get used to the vehicle. then seven months later on january 1, 2003, i lost control of the vehicle on the beltway trying to avoid something in the road. it was raining. i was going the speed limit (55 mph) and my car started to spin and ended up going southbound in the northbound lanes and finally crashed into a concrete dividing wall. the air bags did not deploy. i feel very fortunate to be alive and that no one else was hurt. the car was taken to the dealership and it is currently under investigation for possible defects. i feel that i am unable to drive this unsafe vehicle. i have also noticed that the vehicle has a tendency to pull to the right.
Consumer stated that when they was hit at 40mph in the front center of the vehicle the air bag did not deploy causing minor injuries to the consumer. *ts
I had a head on crash with a cement divider on dec 24th 2002. the liberty was a total loss and i received a head, neck and back injury. the airbags did not deploy even though i was traveling 65 mph when the crash accorded. chrysler was contacted and took no responsibility for the airbags. they stated the threshold for the sensors were not met and if they had, i could have been hurt worse. they said airbags deploy at 200 mph and can cause injuries worse than the crash. *jb
Driver side airbag failed to deploy however the passengerside did. collision occured on the front driver side causing about $9500 in damage. scan test completed and the investigator for chrysler found 3 faults in the squib 1 and squib 2 modules, also said that the seatbelt tensioner sensor created a fault which to the computer not to deploy the bag. the belt was fastened at time of crash.
Driver side airbag did not deploy during frontal off-set collision, only pass. side did. faults were found in driver side seatbelt tensioner and open circuit faults also found. chrysler is not cooperating with our safety failure and is maintaining that only 1 airbag was supposed to deploy, this was stated in a letter which also denied the faults that had been already found. chrysler will not return our phone calls at this time and the letter sounds like a cover-up. the only assistance we are receiving about this major safety defect has been from our dealership who is also trying to contact the chrysler rep for us.
My wife lost control of our 2002 jeep liberty limited edition while driving in a downpour in the late afternoon on 12/19/02. she crossed the median colliding with a car and a truck and continued into a muddy field where the vehicle finally came to a stop. the driver side airbag failed to deploy either during or after the crash, however, the passenger side airbag deployed during the crash even though there was no passenger in that seat. this accident is, i believe, a driver side frontal offset collision type. dealer contacted independent investigator for chrysler who obtained codes from the on-board computer trying to find out why the driver side airbag failed. we have no results of the investigation as yet. luckily, my wife did have her seat belt fastened or her injuries would have been much worse. she does have bruising and soreness and backpain and also has no memory of actual crash. numerous medical tests have been performed while she was a patient in the hospital and after her release but no major health problems have been diagnosed as yet.
Upon making a slight lane correction at approx. 60 mph, my daughter's 2002 jeep libety began swerving uncontrollably. she felt no resistance to the steering wheel as she tried to stop the swerving. at no time did she apply the brakes. witnesses said it appeared she had a flat tire. eventually, the vehicle entered the grass median and rolled 2.5 or 3.5 times coming to rest on the roof facing on-coming traffic. the complete rear end(tires and differential) separated and ended up approx. 75 feet from the vehicle. the right front axle or cv joint was broken. neither her passenger or her air bags deployed. the driver's seat belt was broken at the end of the motion of the rolling. both occupants were bruised and cut. we believe the axle failed and caused this potentially fatal accident. this vehicle had approx. 3000 miles on it. at 1800 miles the engine had thrown a rod and the engine was replaced completely. the jeep liberty is structurally unsound and of poor design particularly in the area of the rear suspension. daimler-chysler has lowered the suspension in obvious response to roll over incidents.*jb..*ak
Consumers son was involved in a collision. the collision caused the vehicle to roll over four times, coming to a rest on the vehicles top. none of the airbags deployed. after returning from the hospital where the son was being treated for contusions, the recall notice had been delivered, 01v37. *jg
Jeep was hit by vehicle running red light and air bags failed to deploy. *ak
I was involved in an accident where a vehicle pulled in front of me and i t-boned them at approx. 50-55 mph. neither the front driver or passenger air bags deployed. said vehicle now totalled. contacted chrysler, filed a claim. they sent a "special investigator" that tried to tell both the body shop owner (who was on scene of accident) and my husband that the accident happened differently than it actually did. the investigators contact at chrysler, roy porterfield, then explained to me that he thought the accident happened differently than it did. he told me that the airbags weren't supposed to go off unless it is a full frontal impact. this accident was a full frontal impact. i hit the steering wheel in said accident and after three weeks am still in pain and not fully able to return to work.*ak

Vehicle was involved in a direct frontal collision at 30mph. upon impact air bags did not deploy causing minor injuries to the driver. vehicle has been inspected by an investigator from chrysler. it was determined that impact was not hard enough to deploy the air bags. a recall has been issued on the vehicle make and model; however, owners notification has not been sent. *ak *yd
While involved in a significant accident, the air bags never deployed when they should have. the other vehicle involved did deploy. this is obviously a safety problem. *ak
The airbag light on the console is on and i am unable to clear the code. please note that i haven't hit anything while driving to cause the light error to be activated. i am reporting this due to the prior reports of air bags being triggered and exploding in 2002 jeep liberty without provocation. i am advocating an air bag product recall for the 2002 jeep liberty.

My son hit a 50ft tree head on and the air bags did not deploy. he and his passenger were both injured and chrysler is telling me that he wasn't going fast enough or hit hard enough to deploy air bags. passenger's head broke windshield and my son's tooth is loosened by hitting steering wheel. the front end frame of jeep is bent. not hard enough?
