Recently reported EQUIPMENT problems on 2002 Jeep Liberty

My 2002 jeep liberty, rarely driven past 3 years, has had to have the ignition switch replaced 3 times as of this week. i can not understand why your department enforced to replace so many jeep ignition switch's to not think they did not have inferior products on the liberty's as well. the keys slide right out of the ignition rather the vehicle is in drive motion or parked, on or off, doesn't matter and there are complaints all over the web as to same issue. i understand the issue needs to be reported to you to make official, however, chrysler's lack of cooperativeness alone, i would think enough to be due cause to umbrella jeeps of all models and get them all enforced around the same time frame.

Received a rear structure reinforcement letter from chrysler and the national traffic safety administration stating that certain 2002-2007 model year jeep liberty vehicles contains defect related to motor vehicle safety. problem: the fuel tank on vehicle has a small chance of experiencing a fuel leak during certain types of rear end collisions. fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in an underbody fire. what dealer will do: chrysler intends to inspect your vehicle and install an oem trailer hitch where appropriate, free of charge (parts and labor) to better manage crash forces in low-speed impacts.... what you must do to ensure your safety: once you receive your follow up notice in the mail, simply contact dealer right away to schedule a service appointment. we have never received a follow up notice in the mail. i took it upon myself to call the dealer and they were not helpful. they said they were booked with appointments but would give me a call back to schedule a future appointment. i never received a call back. i called again and was left on hold for over twenty minutes. i called again, left a message with customer service and never received a call back. regarding an individuals safety, it seems it is not of importance to the local chrysler, jeep dealer. i received the recall letter a few months ago and yet have not received a call and just about forgot about until my husband asked about it. i have given up on contacting the dealer and hence the complaint letter to you. i am six months pregnant and this should be the least of my concerns but now i have to worry about this along with my pregnancy. please advise for i would like to get this resolved as soon as possible. thank you, [xxx] c/o[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) updated 11/17/2014 *js

Air bags didnt work ,rear tire driver side blew question steering? *tr

Rear back passenger window was fixed(regulator) 2 yrs. ago.now same problem has recurred, i called the jeep recall number and they tell me there is no recall for the 2002 jeep liberty, i think that is negligence on their part as a auto company not respecting that this is a widespread problem, i am 1 out of thousands of people with the same exact problem. with the window going down at any given time it poses a problem for the glass to shatter creating a problem for whomever is in the back seat. i am very upset that the dealership won't acknowledge this problem, i need them to understand it is a mechanical fault of theirs. *tr

I have a 2002 jeep liberty and i have to replace a window regulator for the 5th time. every in every instance it has been the rear windows. in one instance i was driving down the highway and the window came down. i have two children in car seats and the last thing i need is for them to throw something out or for something to happen to them b/c the regulator failed while i'm driving down the hwy. other times it was parked in the driveway and when i looked out of my house the rear window was down again. the regulators were just replaced on 6-06-10 and now it is 08-26-10. the new regulator didn't last very long, huh. after all of the problems that i 've had with this jeep i will never buy another one!! i have noticed on different online forums that this seems to be a very common problem for thousands of jeep owners. for some reason nobody seems to be addressing this situation. we spend lots of money on vehicles and for their upkeep! the least jeep can do is fix the problem or they may have a bigger problem ahead when everyone decides to stop purchasing jeeps. since i have already decided to do that guess that's one consumer down the drain for jeep! oh, the other thing....i live in tx and it was 107 degrees the other day....would you want to have a problem with your window in this heat....renders the ac virtually useless! i don't need or want my children sitting in a hot vehicle and risk potential heat associated problems b/c of a crappy product! if it occurs at home then i duct tape it before i leave. *tr

My 2002 jeep liberty limited's ignition will not turn with the key in place. first occurrence, i was able to jiggle the key and get it to finally turn to start, 2nd time it took me bout 10 mins of jiggling the key and it finally turned and started. 3rd time, same situation. now the 4th time and it's sitting in our garage, will not turn to start. *tr

Recall j17. savage lb chrysler says they have no parts. chrysler is sending one repair a week to each dealership in the us. i may be months before they can check my 2002 jeep. so i drive a possibly unsafe jeep for months. *tr

I have a 2002 jeep liberty and i am having continuous issues with the windows. they will stop working or fall down. at $400 a pop to get them fixed and reading numerous other complaints chrysler needs to have these on a recall list. *tr

I own a 2002 jeep liberty and have had to replace the window regulator 4 or 5 times. driving down the road the window just falls. this is very dangerous because it is shocking and can cause a wreck. the window falls all the way down into the door and there is nothing that you can do about it. you must repair immediately because your vehicle is not secure- theft, rain etc. if the windows are down the thump thump of the rear tires is excrutiating to your ears. each repair cost $350. to $500. chrysler and the dealerships are fully aware of this problem and refuse to do anything. they admit that this is a bad design (a plastic clip holds your window up) the part is only warranted for 12 months. on the consumer affairs website alone there were 93 complaints of this happening. most owners are just like me and have had to replace the regulator multiple times. chrysler should be made to recall any vehicle that has this regulator. no other parts are available except for mopar and the part has cost me $137. to $170. just for the part- no labor. this has happened to me while under warranty and out of warranty. now both rear windows broke within two days. i repair and next year the same thing will happen. i and any other jeep owner is keeping chrysler and mopar in business by these repairs. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. when the contact used the jack to change the front driver's side tire, the jack became stuck in an upward position. he was unable to remove the jack from his vehicle. the dealer did not assist. the jack information and vin were unknown. the failure and current mileages were 92,400.

I own a 2002 jeep liberty and within the last year i have replaced the serpentine belt, spark plugs, temp, brakes, rotors, all fluids have been change yearly, thecoils to spark plugs, etc. alot of things have gone wrong. it has about 82,000 miles. it's overheating, shaking, my engine is burning all the coolant and oil as soon as it hits the engine i can hear it boiling under the hood now and it's not safe to drive anymore. i've had it towed to see what's going on,but i was told that my engine is shot and he has no explanation to why except that its burning all the fluids put in it everything else looks fine and is new thanks to me because i've been trying to figure out what is wrong with it and really to find out there is nothing i could do about it. so i called your jeep dealerships and they say its not common for that to happen so is this a safety issue or is this engine defective? please help me i've done everything i could do. *tr

A wiring harness in my 2002 jeep liberty fails every year or so - this disables the abs brakes and causes the speedometer to wander and be inaccurate. the dealership has replaced the harness 3 times (out of warranty) at a cost of about $200 each time. my abs system is disabled from the time the harness fails until i get it fixed. the abs light and brake light illuminate on the dash when it fails - and stays on until the repair is done. *tr

I have a 2002 jeep liberty that i have had for four years. i have had to replace the regulator in the back windows 3 times. jeep is refusing to acknowledge that doing this 3x's is even an issue. also, my jeep dealer will not return my calls when i call to schedule an appointment to get the already recalled items fixed. *tr

3 rocker arms in engine has had to be replaced over a 1 yr time span with less than 56000 mile and 6 yrs old. rear window motors have been replace and now have to be replaced again under little to no use. this vehicle i feel is a lemon and needs to be looked at. contact to the dealer and manufacture has proven to be no use of help. the date i have listed is the recent occurrence and i feel this engine is going to lead to a crash if action is not taken. all services has been kept regularly. the night home from work was very scary in i didn't know if the car was going to blow up or lead to a crash. please help me check into whether there is more events of this nationwide that are similar. *tr

Jeep liberty 2002 has vibration in the steering wheel that makes controlling the jeep very difficult at speeds over 60 miles an hour. then i was on the freeway and i had a total loss off power all most causing accidents the dealership said that the engine needs to be torn apart and inspected and a recall of ball joints done the work took them over a year and the problem still continues their is no warranty and i was charged for the recall repair work i asked for the inspection report showing the work on the engine heads and recall work done when i picked up my jeep they gave me an invoice that showed battery and sparkplug for $2085.00 failing to present me with reports i asked for they said all work is warranted for 1yr 12,000 miles i drove the jeep liberty back to service dept after having another facility look at the engine to confirm if work had been done it had not been touched reported the mechanic and i am now scared to drive or own this vehicle . *tr

Air conditioner/compressor was falling, causing the serpentine belt to burn, and also not allow the alternator to recharge the battery. finally, the a/c unit completely seized. and the car was immobilized. the dealer had been almost exclusively been doing oil changes and 23 point inspections since buying the vehicle. they somehow conveniently missed this one which could have caused a fire. in any event, a vehicle less than 5 years old should not be a fire hazard nor lose it's ac to seizing! *jb

In november of 2006, i had a recall fixed for the "front:control arm:lower ball joint" when the parts became available. i brought the car back 3 days later having issues with the steering and hearing a noise. the dealership took the car for a few days and did a complete inspection and assured me the new parts were sufficient. every now and then (not constant, but scarcely) when i would turn the wheel just a little, the car would turn as if i had turned my wheel all the way. it scared me a few times, but it didn't happen often at all, so i didn't think much of it. on may 31, 2007, i was merging onto i-91 in connecticut driving only 22 miles per hour, and my car did that very thing. i went up and over the curb, up the embankment and crashed into a steel connecticut state sign. if it wasn't for the sign, i would have continued to lose control and possibly been killed. hitting the sign swung my back end around, where i rolled down the embankment and to a complete stop on the side of the highway. my car sustained over $7,000 worth of damage and has damaged my perfect driving record. no other car was involved and no one was hurt, including myself. i was very fortunate, but i feel there needs to be further investigation into the previous recall and possibly a new recall should be posted to eliminate this problem. the problem still exists despite the recall from last year. *jb

1/24/04 - brought jeep liberty in for recall on lower ball joint - "ball joints replaced" per jeep dealership. 3/25/2006 - while pulling out of parking spot, the left front tire broke off of the axle due to corrosion of the upper ball joint. breaking top of tire from axle. 9/27/2006 - received a new recall notice for the lower ball joint from the dealership. dealership claimed that lower ball joint was on back order and unavailable. dealer told me to call back in 90 days. called other dealership and scheduled recall repair. 10/14/2006 - took day off of work, brought car in to second dealership for recall. i was told that they did not have the ball bearings and was told that they could put me on a waiting list for the ball bearings. 12/25/2006 - wife pulled out of parking space. left front tire popped out, appears that recalled lower ball bearing broke. separating bottom of tire from axle. car is currently at stadium automall dealership, rutherford nj , where car was originally purchased, waiting to be repaired. have had problems at this dealership in the past. have had "oil changes, tune ups, etc" to later find that the dealership never replaced the lube express oil filter that was dated and installed previously. *jb

We were returning home to canada from a holiday in california through the redwood forest and several other mountainous/cliff side highways. while driving on the highway in washington state we heard a thump and then the left front tire blew out. the truck was very difficult to steer off the road. when we tried to jack up the truck, to change the tire, we realized it was something far more serious. the left ball joint stem was stuck through the aluminum rim. the control arm was also broken. there was over 200 feet of rubber laid while trying to stop and corkscrews of aluminum from the wheel all over the highway. this all happened with 22,377km driven. the ball joints were then replaced again with the recall in nov/2003. on may 4/06 the ball joint separated again while pulling onto the street from a parking lot. this time we are out of warranty @145,534km. the repairs/towing amounted to approx. $700. the bills have been forwarded to daimler chrysler canada for reimbursement. this is an obvious manufacturing defect this truck has never been driven off road. *jb

My 2002 jeep liberty had a re call in 2003 for ball joints, i had them replaced in march 2004. on april 2, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. i was traveling east bound on i-465 doing 55-60 mph, when a loud noise was coming from the front of the vehicle and then the jeep was starting to loose control as i tried to slow down and proceed to the side of the interstate. i got out of my vehicle and call roadside assistance, during my wait a gentleman stopped to see if i needed help, and i informed him that i thought i had blown a tire, he looked under my car to notice that my ball joint had broke along with my axle and rim, i had it towed to crossroads lincoln/jeep mercury, where on monday the service department examined the car and came to the conclusion that the ball joint had broke along with the axle and the rim of the tire. i had already contacted my insurance company along with filing a complaint to chrysler, they sent out an "inspector" and after his review came to the conclusion that the ball joints separated "due to impact", there was no impact, i controlled the vehicle to the best of my ability so that there would be no impact, causing injury. it has been 24 days now without my vehicle and i am in a rental vehicle, american family is refusing to pay for the repair of the ball joints and so is chrysler. i do not want to file a law suit against chrysler, but they are leaving me no choice, as this was a costly repair, what can i do???????????*jb

At approximately 1745 hours (mst) on the below date i was driving my 2002 jeep liberty limited at 30 mph on a two lane asphalt city street. the pavement was dry, there were no potholes or any road defects or obstructions. suddenly i heard a loud, metallic "thump" followed immediately by the vehicle pulling sharply to the right with no steering control. the vehicle came to a stop with minimal braking and the use of the right street curb. inspection first noted the right front tire to be flat (it was dark). after raising the vehicle on the jack i removed the right front wheel and installed the spare tire. i then attempted to drive the vehicle forward and again, after approximately 2 feet of driving, i heard a scrapping sound. i immediately stopped and inspected the spare wheel. i then noticed that the right front lower ball joint had failed and was digging into the inside of the right front wheel rim. i then called to have the vehicle towed to the nearest jeep dealer. subsequently i was advised that both front ball joints were replaced and that the impact was of such force when the ball joint failed that the front axle seals had been damaged and were replaced. the wheel was replaced because the force was such that the failed ball joint gouged a hole in the wheel rim. it is noteworthy that on may 17, 2004 under job order 1034728 both front ball joints were replaced on this same vehicle at the uftring jeep dealership in e. peoria, illinois (309) 694-0700 due to a campaign recall previously ordered from jeep corporate. i now considered this vehicle unsafe since the previous recall did not remedy the situation and i have no guarantee from jeep that the most recently installed set of ball joints will not fail in the future. *nm

Alloy wheels corroded by valve stem, actual holes in them. bought one new wheel from chrylser after complaining of problem. in the process of getting new tires, my mechanic noticed another wheel had a hole. i have to purchase 4 new wheels, and new 4 tires for my liberty at 37000. tires were constantly needing air, at least once a week. caused the vehicle to pull, and caused excessive tire wear. yes i still have the second wheel with the hole in it. i guess i'll find out if the other two wheels have holes when my new wheels come in. very discouraged!

Air conditioner on 2002 jeep liberty will run fine and then suddenly blow hot air. after a few minutes will begin blowing cool. can do this several times in a single trip. taken jeep to dealership. they replaced "switches"...checked everything including compressor and freon...nothing shows to be a problem. *nm

Dt: the contact stated they have two defective seat belts. after they had their vehicle for one month, the passenger back seat belt became defective. the second seat belt which is the drivers seat seat belt became defective last tuesday. they had no problem putting it on, but became trapped and could not disconnect their seat belt when trying to get out of their vehicle. the contacts coworkers had to get her out with a swiss army knife and wd40. no further damage done to seat belt. a mechanic said this was caused by a weak spring. they have been using this seat belt since, but it is not operating functionally. seat belts are free of dirt and contaminents. no pictures available. the contact also stated that their radio became defective about two months ago. the radio took the juice out of the battery causing battery to die.

Ltr re recalls on her daimler chrysler purchased back in august 13, 2001. *kb the consumer stated the vehicle has been recalled more than 3 times and supposedly fixed over 6 times regarding the ball joints. the consumer had an accident. the ball joint broke while the consumer was attempting to park. the radiator was leaking at the seam. the right front hub bearing was noisy. the cd changer would skip after a few songs. the dealer found an internal fault. there was a heavy crunchy noise when driving, stopping and making turns. the front stabilizer/sway bar was replaced. the rack and pinion was leaking. *jb

While driving at any speed consumer heard a loud noise coming from the rear and vehicle vibrated. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the rear coil springs needed to be replaced due to worn out parts. *ak the brakes made noise when applied. the blower motor for the heat failed and the a/c was inoperative. *nm

My 2002 jeep liberty has had numerous electrical failures. it just dies... the speedometer ground went, the locks played havoc, i have returned the vehicle 6 times to get fixed and they cannot find the problem. daimler chrysler even sent a "technician" to fix the problem... my jeep still sits dead in the driveway at least once every three weeks. i then found out that there were electrical problems before i purchased this very same vehicle, brand new. conclusion, daimler chrysler cannot and or will not help me with this, everyone is constantly on vacation and cannot give me any answers. they drug their feet with me bringing in the jeep leaving it for days at a time, and now i can't even do lemon law. since my time expired 9 nine days ago and daimler chrysler drug their feet, saying that they would fix the problem. *la

2002 jeep liberty: since purchase at 6k miles and 6 months old the vehicle has had major issues and i feel unsafe driving it but cannot get a new car at this time. tow bills topping $1000 since purchase in 2003. between 2003-2004 the jeep was at the dealer several times due to internal grinding, difficulty steering which increased when braking, and felt like it was in 4high all the time. took to dealership but they could not figure out issue. fiance was driving & we heard loud bang vehicle started jerking & making a grinding noise, then we spun into a median and came to a stop not hitting anything luckily. turned off and back on and seemed to work fine. it broke down again in lexington, ky during rush hour traffic about 2 days after the dealer told me the problem was in the anti lock braking system. we lost all gears and started rolling backwards at a redlight almost hitting a car until i pulled up emergency brake. it had to be towed to dealer. transfer case had cracked and exploded at less than 30k miles. dealer replaced under warranty with refurbished parts. has broken down several times with sensor issues & battery problems. has been towed at least 3 times when sensor problem was not properly fixed at dealer and overlooked as the problem. entire time i have owned my jeep the steering wheel has had a major shaking and rattling action which increases when applying brakes due to recall on ball joints & issues with steering column according to dealership when asked why it will not drive & brake smoothly. after fixing recall jeep worked fine for about 3 months then goes back to previous issues again. ball joint issue causes much difficulty in steering and braking properly and makes me feel unsafe & uncomfortable driving it. i feel as though the ball joint issue prior to & after recall repair has still not been fixed and seems to worsening. *tr

The factory jack was unable to hold the vehicle's weight. this resulted in the vehicle crashing down while a good samaritan was changing the front tire. the dealership indicated this only occurred when the vehicle was at an angle and not leveled. *jb it had taken two jacks to hold the vehicle safely while changing the tires. *sc *jb

1. repeated returns to the dealer to correct a noise in the suspension. . while driving the ball joint separated causing the fron wheel to fall off and vehicle to crash to the ground and skid to a stop.*ak 3. vehicle has not been repaired. damier chrysler and it's dealership will not accept responsibilty for failure and as of current date is sitting at dealership lot awaiting outcome of lawsuit.

Had air condition recharged 5/04 because it started blowing warm air. started blowing warm air again in 04/05. took to dealership and after checking everything else, they replace the compressor. *ak

Radio/cd player quit working and the display blinks on and off with radio turned on or off and noticed a clicking sound from within the dash. also from time to time the dome light would come on without intervention. *la

I have had my jeep at the dealers 3 times regarding an insanely loud "feedback" that comes from my stereo and speakers with no warning. the radio has been replaced twice and it still happens. the dealership seems dumbfounded. it will happen with no warning and is incredibly startling. it about caused me to wreck the first time it happened. it is sparatic but once it happens it will continue to happen ffor an undetermined amount of time after that. once the radio is turned off, you may then come back an hour later an it may be fine for a few days, but then all of a sudden it happens again. may be a ground electrical problem but dealership can't find it! still happening...someone help!!!!! also corrosion on my wheels. only has 20k miles. not good...other than these problems...i truly enjoy the vehicle.*ak

The power windows squeaked when the consumer rolled them up or down. *ak also the air condition was not working properly. *jb

Jack does not extend to height necessary to raise flat tire off ground or allow replacement spare tire to be installed. on first occasion, i had to obtain a 2x4 piece of wood to raise vehicle to proper height in my garage, but was fearful of stability of auto. on second occasion after church on 8-25-02, i extended jack to full height, could not remove flat, went for something to raise it higher then jack would not retract. had to borrow a scissor jack from a passing motorist. the jack would be completely useless in any adverse road surface. need to require a more substantial jack that would be suitable for raising vehicle while remaining stable to avoid injury. i pity any mom who gets a flat with a child on board and no cell phone to call for help!*ak

While traveling on highway vehicle shutdown without prior warning. brake rotors squeak. also, air conditioner blows out hot air. dealership is aware of problem.*ak

I had the pleasure of having a flat. in changing the flat i folllowed the directions and raise the vehicle to remove the flat. when i attempted to raise the vehicle higher to put on the spare, which is full size, i could not raise the liberty high enough. as i looked at the jack as i was turning the handle, i could see that the position within the jack stand was no moving higher, i had reached the maximum height. this was a mojor problem. how to raise the vehicle high enough to get the new tire on. the only choise i had was to find something to put under the jack. i needed at least 3 to 4 inches to raise the jack up so the i could raise the vehicle by the same amount. i was able to find a tree branch which i placed under the jack. this was happening on a interstate highway. after putting the branch under the jack i was able to raise the vehicle up high enough to put on the spare. the problem is that the piston within the jack will only to up high enough to take a flat tire off, but not high enough to put a spare tire on. the piston is to short by about 3 to 4 inches. i feel that there is a real safety issue here. putting a tree branch under the jack is not how one changes a tire. as i was raising the vehicle i thought if the weight if the liberty crushed the branch i was going to have a lot more problems. how i was never going to be able to get the jack in the right position. or even worse was what would happen if i have myself under the vehicle in someway and the branch came apart, that was going to hurt. what jeep needs to do is re-design the jack. the stand either has to be taller or the pistion has to be longer to get the vehicle high enough to be able to put the spare. as a side note please make the commet section bigger. trying to type in current manner is not easy. it would make it so much better to see all the text as one is typing. thank you. *ak
