Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Both rear (left and right) door handles have broken clean off. the front two door handles have broken and chipped, but are still intact. no one in my back seat can get out without someone having to get out of the car and let them out from the outside. these have not had excessive pressure or pulling on them, they have just resulted in 3 out of 4 door handles being broken due to normal use and force for exiting the vehicle. there needs to be a recall on this part as i have seen multiple complaints about the same thing happening to others jeep cherokees. my car is a 2006 jeep grand cherokee with a hemi, limited edition. *tr

The electric sunroof developed a small leak when it rained. one day my wife took the jeep to the car wash and the inside was soaked. the electrical system in the doors was wet and also in the roof. the sunroof was defective in some way causing the leaking into the vehicle and the electrical system. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the four interior door handles were cracked and fractured. in addition, the door panels were slightly cracked. in order to exit the vehicle, the contact or passengers had to open the windows and engage the exterior door panels. the vehicle was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

Door handles on both front driver and passenger sides have cracked and if these break, have no way to exit the vehicle. this seems to be a safety issue and jeep will not honor it. *tr

Door handles on all 4 doors are coming apart. the chrome lever is breaking the plastic mold. the rear passenger door lever is totally broke off so the door cannot be opened from inside the vehicle. it is a definite defect in the vehicle. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the front driver's side plastic door panel exhibited a hole around the door handle with several cracks in the surrounding area. there were also cracks visible on the remaining three door panels. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed the contact that the door panel would need to be replaced. the manufacturer offered to contribute toward the repair expense in the replacement of the four door panels. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000. kmj

All 4 interior door handles are broken. one can no longer be opened from the inside. the other 3 are dangling and are about to break. *tr

All door handles inside vehicle are broke. you cannot open the vehicle unless you roll window down and open door from the outside. this is a safety issue. if there is no power to vehicle to roll window down, you will be stuck in the vehicle. in an emergency situation, you will not be able to exit vehicle. several complaints from 2003-2008 filed about same issue from multiple models. a recall needs to be issued. *tr

Interior door handles are breaking and not sturdy. some door cannot be opened from the inside as the handles are not reliable and even some cause minor injuries due to sharp edges. *tr

All four interior door handles and attaching mounts on my jeep grand cherokee are now cracked are now not usable to exit the vehicle, numerous complaints to delmar chrysler go unheard and unanswered, and the company offers no solution or recall to this obvious defect in the manufacture of this vehicle. the plastic used to mount the door handles is brittle and will crack beyond repair, making it impossible to open the door from the inside, this is a major safety issue. the vehicle cannot be exited by passenger in the event of a crash or emergency. i suppose someone will die in a crashed, burning, or sinking vehicle before chrysler will step up and recall this important safety issue. *tr

The interior door panel cracked where it is attached to the door and the handle falls off, leaving the passenger unable to exit the vehicle without assistance. this occurs with normal use, no abnormal use or abuse. *tr

All four interior door panels have cracked and broken where it attaches to the door. consequently, the door handles become inoperable because they are attached to the panel where the cracking occurs. this is a safety issue as both driver and passengers are unable to exit quickly in the event of an emergency and might not even be able to exit at all. chrysler offers no assistance for this known issue, which appears to occur frequently with this model year. *tr

Interior passenger door handle broke off - within one week's time - noticed all remaining doorhandles were cracking and will break off shortly. no excessive wear and tear has caused this - shows defective parts due to the fact that all have become cracked/broken at the same time. two of the door handles get very little use, so it is not due to excessive or abusive use. this is a safety hazard - in case of an accident, my son would be unable to exit the back of the vehicle due to broken handles!!!! *tr

Driver's door interior handle housing broken rendering door handle inoperative. cannot open door in normal operation and is a hazard in an emergency. jeep is unwilling to fix defective parts and states that the entire door panel has to be replaced at a cost over $700/ea., but the parts are on national backorder. doing a quick search brings up numerous complaints about the same problem with no clear solution. i am now concerned that the other doors will fail soon. *tr

After buying a pre-owned 2006 jeep grand cherokee limited (59k miles) a few days ago, i noticed that one of the backseat interior door handles is broken. there is no apparent break from what you can see, but some plastic must have cracked inside of the door itself. i've read that this is a common problem in 05-07 jeep grand cherokees and there is no recall. it seems that, although it is only the one interior door handle now, eventually all four will break. this is a safety issue because it prevents passengers from exiting the vehicle without help from outside of the car. the fix is quoted at $400/door, making it somewhat unreasonable, especially for a crucial and simple function of the car. *tr

Interior door handles are cracking and crumbling on the car. the only repair the dealer has is to replace the door panels for $800 each. i contacted chrysler group llc customer assistance ([xxx]), they refuse to do anything about it.they will not acknowledge there is a problem with the door handles. they will only say that my car is to old, has no warranty so therefore they cannot assist me with this repair. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The interior door handle on the drivers side front started to get hair line cracks in it. it is cracking more and more with use. at some point the handle will come apart and i will not be able to get out of my car. i asked the dealer about a repair and they want $800.00 to replace the whole door panel. it appears this will happen with the other doors as well. there are after market repair kits, but after researching and finding that this is a chronic problem with the handles, i believe jeep should replace or repair them for free. *tr

Passenger rear door interior door handle has broken. there was no abuse, the interior door handle was opened by an adult and then while opening the door from the inside, the interior door handle broke due to just opening the door. i have researched this on many blogs and many other jeep grand cherokee owners are experiencing this same problem. the interior door handle area is too weak to handle the stress of casual openings. *tr

Inside door handles are breaking making exiting the jeep hard. *tr

When attempting to exit the vehicle the door handle cracked the door panel and released the door handle from the door leaving it unusable and the door unable to be exited. was attempting to flea vehicle and was trapped inside due to weak plastic failing in the door handle. in the event there was a fire or even toxic gas in the car cabin, there would have been a fatality. extremely unsafe and should be recalled. *tr

I have a 2006 jeep cherokee laredo and 3 out of 4 interior door handles are completely broken. i even have an extended warranty that is supposed to cover everything but was told by the dealership that "trim" is not covered. how are interior door handles considered trim? i was told that the entire door panel would have to be replaced at $400.00 each. this is not a cosmetic issue but a safety issue. the doors will not open from the inside. i am very afraid of getting into a car crash and my children not being able to exit the vehicle. i have read many, many stories of the exact same problem with these door handles. there should be a recall by daimlerchrysler. *tr

I purchased this jeep in dec of last year. slowly but surely the plastic component that houses the interior door handle has cracked, with pieces falling out. now on the right side rear door the handle has fallen out because the plastic has completely failed. the other three plastic pieces are also all cracking with handles already getting loose. if there were an emegency situation, it is not possible to exit vehicle via the rear door. i am afraid that in due time the other handles will fall out. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the plastic door handles fractured from all four doors. the contact spoke with the dealer and was told that the door handles were not covered under warranty and provided no further assistance. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 76,000.

Driver side interior door trim behind the door handle has broken away. without the trim the door handle does not remain in the correct position. door handle has to be set back into proper position before door can be opened. this is concerning when i consider exiting the vehicle quickly in an emergency. also the handle/trim condition is deteriorating and it won't be long before the handle fails completely. *tr

All the inside door handles are starting to break off at the panel and would not be able to open the doors from the inside in the case od an accident. *tr

Long story short my wife heard a noise in the passenger side front end. i had her stop by belle tire (where tires came from) to check it out. they said the passenger side lower control arm bracket separated from the frame and was not safe to drive! belle said they had never seen anything like it! i had it taken to town & country collision in flat rock (an a-1 shop) and they said they can't fix it unless they replace the whole frame! i also have a friend that's an insurance adjuster who has never seen anything like it! i'm wondering if there were ever any incidents in your system for anything like this? i will offer to give you the vehicle, as i did with chrysler in my complaint to them, for investigative purposes? i know from my years of work in the automotive industry that there were salt spray tests & requirements on most chassis parts. people are astounded that a 15 year old jeep that's never been in an accident and is garaged and kept clean and maintained and still running like top could have a failure as this! any assistance or direction you can provide is appreciated.

the plastic component that houses the interior door handle has cracked, with pieces falling out. now on the right side rear door the handle has fallen out because the plastic has completely failed. the other three plastic pieces are also all cracking with handles already getting loose. if there were an emergency situation, it is not possible to exit vehicle via the rear door. i am afraid that in due time the other handles will fall out. *tr

2006 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles disintegrate making it impossible to open doors from inside. obviously a tremendous safety concern in case of mishap as all four disintegrate at the same rate. we had 2 totally fail rendering door inoperative and occupant unable to exit. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the support strut that held the hood in place collapsed on his hand. the contact was injured, and concerned that it could have been more severe. the dealer agreed to replace the support strut. the failure mileage was 37,000.

Interior drivers side door handle is cracked/broken. chrysler corp. dealer states that it will cost $600. there has been hundreds of complaints for same defective/cheap door handles and their breakage, made on internet. this is an unsafe issue. people can't get out of their vehicles! *tr

During the month of may 2011 the plastic interior door handle recesses began to crack and ultimately the pieces literally began to fall of the vehicle rendering the door handles useless when attempting to open the door from inside as door handles no longer had a pivot point to operate against when attempting to pull the interior door handle in an effort to operate the door latch mechanism. this failure makes it impossible to open the door from inside the vehicle short of rolling down the power windows and pulling on the outside door handle. on the tenth of june 2011 the selling dealer was called concerning this issue and the operations manager stated he could not do anything. subsequently chrysler customer assistance was called and after several exchanges with two different case managers, on the 21st of june i was told by the presiding case manager that due to the fact that the vehicle had approximately 80,000 miles on it and had been out of warranty for so long (2006 jeep grand cherokee larado) chrysler would do nothing. *kb

I have a 2006 jeep grand cherkoee plastic pieces where handle is located has broken into pieces .there has been several complaints about this .can,t open the door now that is very dangerous. have to roll down window to get out. please help us solve this problem jeep dealer and the owner of co. not interested .they have our money stand behind there vehicle. *tr

The area behind the passenger side interior door handle has imploded, the plastic is cracked in several places, allowing the interior handle to hang loosely. the area would be best described as the well behind the handle. that door saw almost no use. it does not allow for normal exit of the vehicle, this is a safety issue. *tr

All four door handles broke. when you tried to open the door the handle crashed and you ended with the door handle in your hand. *tr

During the weeks of early march, i experienced leaks of the interior of my 2006 jeep grand cherokee dripping on the passenger side (a-pillar), driver side (a-pillar) and above the home garage door controls (overhead console) after it rained/snowed. i brought in the vehicle on march 22 to a jeep dealership service center where it was troubleshoot with re-securing the weather strip above windshield and a gasket in the sunroof was replaced (tsb 23 040 06). however 2 days later the leak occurred again on the passenger side and driver side (abover the driver, myself) in which it does take your focus off the road as water drips on your legs/knee. the leak has yet to be resolved, as vehicle was brought in a second time on march 28 and no confirmed trouble-shoot was completed as i retrieved the vehicle back on march 31st with a theory of the leak either coming from the windshield or the sunroof. the service technicians said they would call back once more detail was investigated by the manager however i never received once call-back. interestingly on the 28th when i brought the vehicle in he said "this was the 4th vehicle this week", among others that i myself have found online of multiple jeep owners even the 2011 model having the same issue which is a safety issue as thunderstorm season is here and heavy downpours and leaks dripping on the driver are distractive and take focus off the road. i don't understand why a recall has not been issued from jeep after so many owners have this issue and end up paying out of pockets for repairs to their carpets(mold), stereo damage, among other things. fortunately i have not heard of any major accidents from this but a distraction is definitely out there for drivers if it leaks or starts leaking while on a highway. *tr

All four of the interior door handles have stress cracks and are broken. these door handles have not been abused or misused. this situation is a known defect by jeep and are unwilling to fix it. this is a very unsafe condition for the occupants of the vehicle. all four doors need to be repaired. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all four side door panels were fractured and broken. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated there were no recalls for the failure. the manufacturer was contacted who offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 51,000.

2006 jeep grand cherokee with broken door panels. *tr

I am not sure how, but the rear passenger door panel cracked and door handle fell off leaving back seat passengers vulnerable (a child rides back there). in addition, there is a large crack in the panel of the front passenger door as well. i have 70,500 miles on the vehicle with a service contract of 7 years/85,000 miles maximum care still in effect. i took the vehicle to my local dealership (hall chrysler jeep in virginia beach) and was quoted $475 for a back ordered door panel (which to replace both doors comes to $950...unacceptable!) i refused to order the unit since this is a safety concern, and should be covered by my service contract. i contacted chrysler group, llc and was told that "handles and plastic parts are not covered"...the handle isn't broken, the panel needs to be replaced in order to correct this issue. i feel this is a genuine safety concern and urge the nhtsa to enforce a recall from jeep. if i were in an accident, my passengers would be trapped!! it is unconscionable that jeep would sell such a high-end vehicle with this kind of safety defect. of utmost concern is the fact that an extended, maximum care service contract would not cover this issue. i would like to know how other complainants with this issue had their cases resolved. updated 05/12/11 updated 06/28/11 *tr

At the time of this complaint three of four of the door handles on my 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo have broken off and are unusable. the plastic handles and the supporting door frames are all cracking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the dealer just told me that the warranty may not covered because the ?problem start after 50,000 miles?, this is ridiculous, and the manufacturer has been unwilling to even discuss the issue, they didn't answer phone calls, even voicemails, nothing at all! for me it?s more than obvious, this is a safety hazard as it takes more time to egress the vehicle in an accident. just think about this hypothetical situation; you're with the family, (wife, daughters, grandfather and grandmother), all windows up, then appears somebody and hits you, inside three of four handles didn't operates. *tr

Parked in driveway grand daughter pulled on door handle and it broke into pieces. called jeep dealer to get replacement (not warranted)door handle, have to replace hole door panel. *tr

I have a 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo with only 60,234k miles and the door panels on 3 of the 4 doors so far have broken out just with the normal use, interior door handle crack, plastic breaks, handles go limp and handles fall off. the plastic panel components are fragile and cheap. this is a major safety concern for me especially with two children of 1 and 12 years olds because in an event of fire or and accident the boys can not get out from inside the car due the broken door handles. cant find part to replace the door handles because the complete door panel has to be replaced and the cost for each of one are more than 500.00 dollars and that's not including the labor cost. i have call chrysler jeep and they offer no recall or solution for this serious matter. *tr

The plastic around my interior drivers side door handle cracked and shattered in multiple places causing the door handle to be held on just by the cable it is attached to. *tr

Inside door handles are all broken and falling off . one back door will not open from the inside or the outside. the area behind the door handle is broken plastic that could very likely cause a bad cut on a persons hand. i have photos i can e-mail to you. vehicle is a 2006 jeep cherokee with around only 20k miles. updated ivoq 12/29/10 *tr

I have a 2006 jeep grand cherokee limited with only 50k miles and the door panels on 2 doors so far have broken out and now you can't get out of the vehicle from the inside. i have already had both front door panels/handles replaced. the plastic around the door handles is very thin and cheap and breaks very easily. this is a major safety concern for me especially with children. if these door handle/panels break then you have no way to get out of the car safely. jeep doesn't seem to care about it and accepts no responsibility. i have done research on my own and found out that is a very common occurrence with this jeep model, across several years models. i am extremely frustrated about the poor quality of the vehicle compartment and service by jeep. *tr

July 26th 2010 is when i first purchased my 2006 jeep grand cherokee and my back two doors were inoperable. no one could get out of the doors from the inside out. i drove around for a whole year before i got it replaced. the operation homefront replaced my rear doors for me with nothing coming out of my pockets. if it wasn't for ohf i would've came out of my pocket $1200 to fix just the rear doors. i needed them fixed because i have a child and that is a safety hazard if my child cannot get out of the vehicle. jeep said there was not a recall on the door panels for this vehicle. right now my driver side door panel is failing and i do not have the money to fix the door because it is so expensive to fix. jeep needs to do a recall or someone is going to get hurt. my handle is separating form the door and soon i will not be able to get out of my driver side door. *tr

Jeep grand cherokee interior door panels. *tr

1. no events leading up to failure. normal use ....and way less use than normal on some interior door handles. 2. interior door handles crack, plastic breaks, handles go limp, handles fall off. 3. called chrysler. looked for recall notices figuring this is major if people can't get out of a vehicle in an emergency. nothing done to correct the failure. can't find parts to replace missing and broken handles. chrysler wants around 500 dollars per each door handle!!!!!!! with 12,000 mile guarantee only (3 months). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep grand cherokee. while parked, the front passenger door handle fractured. the contact stated that all of the door handles fractured over a small period of time. the front and rear passenger side doors could not be opened from the interior or the exterior of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technicians stated that the front and rear driver and passenger side door panels would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000.

2006 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles are cracking, three out of four are cracked and now one is inoperable. this is a safety hazard because the door can't be opened from inside. the plastic has become brittle and cracks, then breaks out. it is not a separate part and is part of the entire door panel. *tr
