The part of factory installed gas tank skid plate broke. the piece underneath the tank back part fell to the ground while the forward part remained attached. if i was backing up, the plate could have caught on the ground forcing plate into the gas tank spilling gas and possibly causing a fire from the friction or hot exhaust . at the time i was just pulling out a gas station when i heard a scraping noise. i pulled to the curb and looked under the car and saw the plate hanging there. if i had backed up i could have easily ruptured the gas tank and cause a fire. this plate is attached to the main skid plate by welds and is a very heavy gage and will not bend easily. what would happen if the front of the plate fell while i was traveling down the highway at highway speeds?
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the fuel tank detached while the vehicle was being driven. the driver pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, strapped the tank back to the vehicle, and drove home. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 213,000.
The recall number is n74 which was to have the rear of it to be reanforced they tell me this is no longer available and i was driving and the gas tank fell down almost fell off because the gas tank strap broke witch there was only one on it i was going 55 mph for 7 miles
Takata recall my driver's seat has been replace once, at my own expense, due the seat becoming extremely "wobbly" and being broken from the bease frame and frame under seat. i was on highway driving when the seat first became slightly unstable, had i unfornatunately been struck from the rear, i would've been violently thrown forward. i have researched this matter and found that there had been a recall for the 2004 jeep grand cherokee laredo wj, yet i found nothing on this site. it costs me $600, which is a lot for a disabled veteran. but my safety comes first. please look into this
I have owned my jeep for 3 yrs now and its has been a wonderful vehicle but last yr i noticed the gas tank cover starting to hang down. now there is a big piece about to fall off and the tank is completly exposed. i have read a lot about this issue and am not sure what is going on. it seems that i may be able to have a hitch installed and maybe not. it seems there is a huge issue with this and is my tank going to just fall down one day. also why cannot any one get the air bag restraint module for the recall of my vehicle. what good is having a recall if they can drag their feet. i just would appreciate some info and help to get my car fixed. thank you
Takata recall - had my 2004 jeep grand cherokee in for the recall in january 2018. they fixed airbag recall and problem seatbelt light constantly being on even when driver is correctly seatbelted in- the light stays on. now, it is august 27, 2018 and both air bag light and seat belt light are back on. also, the fuel tank skid plate is completely rusted through. this leaves the gas tank fully exposed, leaving you susceptible to any number of possible scenarios where the fuel tank could ignite, especially if one was to be rear ended by another vehicle. it is not protected by "solution" to replace the tow bar package. i know serveral other people with the same vehicle and fuel tank skid plate rusting through completely. this combination of the takata airbags deploying unexpectedly along with the exposed fuel tank, & truly endangers the lives of the driver, all occupants and potentially anyone else in the vicinity, if one or both we're to explode. potentially caused me lose of life to those involved.
Fuel tank skid plate/ protective seal rusting excessively in the last 2 months. now has hole in shield. vehicle mobile noticed while it was on my lift at the shop.
Complaint is about recalls being painful and fca not seeming like it wants to perform them: r60: parts are still not available though we got a notice labeled "important safety recall" months ago. according to our dealer parts are still not available. apparently this is for an airbag issue but it does not seem that fca is making "every effort to obtain these parts as quickly as possible" as is stated on the recall notice. n47: i have called our local dealer a few times and they refuse to look at it saying that since we don't have an aftermarket trailer hitch that our vehicle is not eligible for any remedy for the exploding gas tanks. is our vehicle safe to drive???
Jeep accelerated without stepping on gas. accelerator cable did not seem to operate smoothly, when applying, felt somewhat "rough/nothy" owner agreed to change as suggested. cable changed total $477.39 in 5/2010.this time car was towed to jeep dealer. c. stated jeep accelerated on its own, towed in. jan. 13,11 jeep towed in to jeep dealer for bucking and accelerating on its own, no issue was found. may 13,11 towed into jeep dealer, changed several components and $1,074.68, never had a definite answer, and after each incident took its toll on my nerves, scared to death to drive my jeep, which i purchased to make our family safe. fast forward, 11/23/2015 this jeep once again started accelerating and racing in park and with the hand brake up. my jeep has 64,k and is taken care of, looks great. but, once again i cannot risk putting my family or myself in it to drive. i have found numerous stories like this and some a lot worse. my instincts were to just shut the engine off and i did all4 times over the years. i am now on a fixed income and would love to be happy and keep this jeep grand cheroee but, i can no longer take this chance. i would love to know how many people must die or how many accidents have to happen before chrysler wakes up and recalls, i'm guessing they don't really know what to fix. i also had problems with my tail lights and had repairs several time, when i got a ticket after it was already fixed a few times i had to pay. failed nj inspection 1 time due to what they called a wig wag, which jeeps are know for, who out there is on the consumers side, no one it appears. no recalls on this this but, they will get back to me on a passenger restraint module, maybe next year 2016, if we are lucky. all 4 times the vehicle was being driven and the only thing that worked was shutting off the engine using the key. my vehicle must be safe for grandchild.
I wanted to advise you that the consent order signed on 7/24/15 with fca us llc and nhtsa might have some problems in its implementation . i have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee that according to attachment b, #15 on page 33 should be eligible for an unrestricted $100.00 gift card upon inspection at a dealership. i called jeep at 1(800) 992-1997 and was told i was not eligible for the $100.00 gift card. i just wanted to let you know about a possible non-compliance issue with the consent order.
Why are some 1993-2004 jeeps getting recalled do to fires from rear accidents, when all have the same placement of the gas tank behind the rear axle. for less than two hundred dollars for a corrective hitch i am not willing to put my family at risk and because i will not nor will i ask others to jeopardize their livelihoods.please understand my jeep has been good to me and i to it as it is in great shape, but i do feel a need to express my concerns to all till this matter is settled. *tr
Why isn't my 2004 jeep grand cherokee been recalled about the rear gas tank?there are hazards concerns about getting rear ended.i thought it was a recall. *tr
I was under the impression that the 2004 jeep grand cherokee was being recalled for gas tank correction due to the lower part of the tank being exposed to rear impact. when i contacted the dealer, ciconni chrysler jeep, they said my car was left out of the recall. this vehicle does not have a trailer hitch. can you advise me on this matter? *tr
Gas tank recall im waiting ???? *tr
I've always had trouble with my 2004 jeep grand cherokee. especially with the fuel system and fuel pump. i've had to replace my fuel pump 3-4 times. now its reading the rpm extremely high. i've also had to replace my jeep's computer because i was told that was the problem. it seems there's also electrical issues. i still can't find the exact problem.
While driving the vehicle experienced a power loss except for the electrical system. i was unable to control my speed and lost power steering. after 5 seconds, while coasting to a stop, the vehicle resumed full power. since the first occurrence, it has become more frequent (up to twice a week). in addition, the vehicle will not start randomly and requires a few minutes wait time before a successful start. *tr
Gas tank completely exposed for rear end colision
I brought my 2004 jeep grand cherokee june 2004, barley used. i have repaired a lot of things under the hood especially with the sensors and the black harness wire in the drivers side door, it split in 2 and stopped running in the middle of traffic. i had to have it sliced and mended together, after 8 months recently, i had to repair the black wire again due to moisture setting in the tape and wires, i read on the internet chrysler should have never put the black or yellow where's in the door, because they bend and break. this caused my the lights to stay on and remote side mirrors not to work. the dash board meters went haywire, i had the alternator replaced, sensors and throttle body cleaned and replaced. the engine light stays on constantly now, giving codes of p0141, p0137 with bad fuel mpg. it rides like it is smothered in feathers. i was advised that it could be the fuel pump. i recently had the fuel injectors replaced, the engine light went out, for 2 day's and now back on. how frustrating after buying this car for $23,900 in 6/2004, i have paid an estimate in car repairs of $4-5000 so far. if chrysler knows about these problems they need to confess, and fix these problems with recalls. please look into these issues. i am sure others are suffering too. *tr
I have been informed by chrysler via phone conversation is not recalling my vehicle. the 1998-2004 were listed as having severe design flaw with the gas tank located near the rear end and prone to impact explosions. chrysler stated my vehicle did not qualify for recall since i did not have a tow hitch installed and it was not a 1993-1998 vehicle. 1. if my vehicle has a unprotected gas tank and over 250 vehicles have caught fire on impact why is my car not going to get a protective guard ( this was done on other vehicles that owners complained while under warranty) 2. how is a tow hitch going to stop a back end collision? 3. why is the design after 2004 of the gas tank not located so close to rear end. if the location isn't a safety concern it shouldn't have needed to be relocated. chrysler fought this recall for years and nhtsa allowed it until a petition was circulated on change.org to have model years 1998-2004 cars recalled. could it be the vehicles chrysler will fix are even still on the road and that is why they are eager to fix those. i am stuck with a car cannot be sold or drive. the defect doesn't just hurt me but the poor person who would hit me and risk an explosion. chrysler must be held accountable! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. after starting the vehicle, a strong fuel odor was detected inside the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to find a leak. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 88,000.
My wife was backing up in our drive way she did not see my sons honda civic behind her very poor vision from being so high factory settings. she ripped the gas tank open. a few years later she was rear ended and again the tank ripped open we were lucky both times no fire. then we have had death wobble every jeep suffer,s from it at some time in it,s life as per the dealer. i replaced every steering part in the front end after 40,000 miles again it happened to me at 55mph on the highway i came so close to it rolling it over it took me more than a month to get back in it. the design of the rear is just an accident waiting to happen the rear is the same as a ramp to drive up. i am far from a rich man this product cost me close to 40,grand. i truly thought we could get a few cost free miles.i am disabled i live on a fixed income. now my investment is worthless. i was a driver for a living and have driven more than a thousand cars and have never experienced this with any other car help help help please [xxx] p.s i service my cars like clockwork! i try to fix things before they break..this jeep has me beat! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
