We have classified the 9 complaints from 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee about EQUIPMENT into the following categories.
I filed original oct 4 2016 nhtsa complaint and also objected to restriction nhtsa imposed upon complaint (2000 characters in total, and total mb of attachments 5mb or less) because oct 4 2016 complaint is insufficient, incomplete. nhtsa investigation requires more information from me (reports, testimony, dozens of critical police photos) necessary for nhtsa investigation of my complaint. on oct 4 2016, i demanded nhtsa investigation unit contact me by email, so that i may document data my submission to nhtsa, as part of my complaint. to date, nhtsa refuses, it has done nothing to investigate because nhtsa stonewalls me for information. nhtsa investigation units endangers public safety with deliberate lack of data, resulting in bogus non-investigation. on oct 11 2013, 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo, vin no [xxx], had vehicle malfunction event, unintended acceleration, high speed start, high impact and high energy collisions, defective btsi (brake transmission shift interrupter), no brake throttle override, no safeguards to stop vehicle, high rate of speed crashing over and over, in throttle wide open, no software or hardware upgrade to stop or prevent unusual acceleration while in park, inability to brake vehicle to stop at such high rate of speed. tires vaporized, chunks of rubber broke, metal rim remnants of tire skidded sidewalk and street, in series of horrific collisions, documented by photos and reports which nhtsa deliberately refuses to acquire from me as part of my complaint, to manipulate the outcome of bogus and deliberately flawed pseudo-nhtsa investigation. due to height mismatch square box jeep and subcompact cars, jeep was battering ram against subcompact cars effectively without impact bars (bars to low) in such malfunction event, wreck subcompact cars, endanger lives and health of occupants of small cars who absorb impact (instead of distributed forces via impact bar), grave collisions. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *
The ventilation system is not working correctly, in the fact that the airflow whether it is hot or cold is obstructed somehow. had this problem for quite some time and would very much like to know what my options are. yes there is a noise coming from the dashboard, sounding like a machine winding down. please help me. *js
The heater on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee only works approx. 25% of the time. the person i purchased it from said it only happened to her every so often, but that it had gotten worse. since i've owned it, it has continued to get progressively worse. i'm concerned as winter is approaching and i'll need to see out the windshield and will need a heat defroster for it living here in nebraska. this is a long known problem and i'm shocked that chrysler has not recalled this problem as it poses major safety implications. i've worked on cars for 15 years and have never heard of a heater going bad. as any mechanic out there, heaters don't go bad unless the whole heater core is bad, in which case i'd have a floor full of anti-freeze, which i do not have. my jeep has not lost an ounce of fluid and runs at perfect operating temperature. it's an obvious electrical problem that jeep should be held accountable for! there are numerous posts on numerous forms with hoards of people having the same problem that jeep is charging $1500 to fix. talk about a scam!!! *tr
My 2002 grand cherokee suddenly has no heat. the defroster works randomly and sometimes shuts down only blowing cold, outside air causing the window to fog up with no warning. after researching this issue online there are thousands of complaints about this, the dealer fix is to take off the dash ($1000+ in labor) to fix a $20 part. there are parts available online to do the fix yourself for $100. seems to me that not only does jeep know there is a factory default with their jeeps, they rip people off by charging exorbitant amounts of $$ to fix something simple. i searched through your database and there are pages and pages of complaints for the same issue. at this point i am going to fix it myself because i cant go through the winter without heat, but im sure as heck not going to take it to the dealer and get charged $2500. and im definitely never buying another gm car again. *tr
In march, 2005, with 59,000 miles, my 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland, which i purchased new in august 2002, needed a new rear differential. a replacement was also needed at 80,000 (july 2006), 86,000 (march 2007), and 98,000 (april 2008). as of this writing, the dealer has had the vehicle for over 3 weeks. in replacing first the bearings, then the gears, and then the "entire rear end", they have been unable to solve the problem. attempts to contact chrysler have been unsuccessful. no one at the 800 numbers can offer any solutions. i have an extended warranty, so the repairs have been covered, minus my $100 deductible. but, i don't think the number of repairs is questionable. i've found a number of sites with other individuals reporting the same problem on this particular body style/model. perhaps there is a wide spread problem.. *tr
Blend air door failure/no heat*cn
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the contact noticed that the heating and cooling system did not work. she called the local dealer and they instructed her to bring the vehicle in for inspection. while driving at an unknown speed to the dealer, she noticed freon rising from the instrument panel. as a result, other components of the engine and engine cooling system began to fail. the air conditioning and heater no longer worked. the dealer stated that not only had her blower motor and resister failed, but the heater core, evaporator core, actuator, and blend door (which no longer provided heat on the driver side of the vehicle) were corroded as well. the dealer further stated that the freon from the instrument panel originated from the evaporator core, indicating the presence of ethanol (toxic gas). the manufacturer has not offered any assistance and stated that the failures were due to lack of maintenance. currently, the estimated cost that the contact has spent on repairs is $2,000. the vehicle is at the dealer and has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 91,000 and current mileage was 91,350.
The heating/air conditioning system on 2002 grand cherokee was faulty. the vehicle has just over 65000 miles on it. i just had it repaired at a cost of over $1000 and it was still making noises that lead me to believe it will fail again. it wasnacceptable that a car company with as much experience as daimler chrysler could not design a quality heating / air conditioning system.*ak
Ventilation system making noise behind dashboard. when the a/c unit is off, once i shut off vehicle, no noise will be heard, however after running a/c, when shutting off vehicle, a moaning or creaking sound is heard, everytime. i have read this is happening to many many others. possible "blend door" problem. this needs to be repaired. people that live in cold environments or extremely hot should not have to worry about a hvac system breaking and then have to pay 1500.00 for repair. *tr
Tl*- the contact stated that when driving the 2002 jeep grand at 45 mph on clear road conditions the air conditioner started to blow cold air on the passenger side. the problem occurred when he turned on the heater. also caused cold air to blow onto the windshield. the cold air blew onto the windshield that caused the windshield to freeze. the contact was unable to see out of the windshield once it froze. when he attempted to turn the heater off it continued to blow cold air as long as the engine was running. the vehicle was being inspected by the dealership. the vehicle currently had 59000 miles.*ak
The front brake rotors have warped for the second time in 42,000 miles. driving with these warped rotors causes the steering wheel to shake violently and brake application at the wheels to be uneven. the shaking is more pronounced when braking from speeds above 40 mph. this is a very unsafe condition especially on wet or icy surfaces. the dealer refuses to replace the rotors under warranty. *jb
2002 grand cherokee lost heat on both zones of the dual climate control. *ts the consumer feels that the manufacturer should fix the system free of charge. *nm
2002 jeep grand cherokee. steering wheel began making strange sounds. steering gear and associated parts were replaced. shortly after, strange sounds returned, the steering began to become completely unassisted at low speeds for a brief second. the problem causes quite a scare and causes temporary loss of control. this is associated with low speed idle. damage is imminent without repair. this problem is well documented among jeep chat rooms. second well documented problem among jeep owners. faulty power window units that fail without warning and cause window to be stuck up or down. this causes driver to be forced to drive with open non responding windows in a variety of weather conditions, obvious safety and health hazard. third chronic hazard well known to jeep owners as well as jeep. the blend doors on a/c consistently fail right after warranty period. this causes a failure of the defroster and obvious danger, as well as drivers are forced to drive with constant unheated airflow until costly repair. jeep is well aware of these problems but refuses to acknowledge a consistent problem and offer correction for all affected vehicles. *nm
After reading almost all complaints with other 2002 jeep grand cherokees, i have to put in my two cents worth. i can relate to almost every complaint that there is. i just had both my front left and right window regulators replaced a month and a half apart, one just today at $327.00 with my employee discount. (i work for a car dealership) last month, i have had almost $500.00 worth of repairs for my power steering pump problems. i have had my brake rotors turned and resurfaced and am in need of doing it again. then on the other hand, i have experienced problems with my dual control panel not working correctly which i have not have repaired yet because i don't have the money for that one and didn't know at the time that it was a problem. then when my jeep was under warranty i have had the air conditioner compressor replaced, new battery(for hard or no starting), amongst other repairs that i can't think of at the moment. i have also been experiencing hard starts with my truck and also the transmission not engaging or jumping (accelerating) while switching gears that the jeep dealer has not been able to recognize as a problem. i feel that those new chrysler commercials are not up to par as american and german engineering. those germans know how to build vehicles in the first place and help repair them as the problem seem necessary. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the air conditioning fan failed. there were no prior warnings prior to the failure. the vehicle was taken to the service dealer, who replaced the air conditioning fan.
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle always swayed back and forth as if it were off balanced. while driving approximately 30 mph, she noticed that the engine warning light was illuminated on the instrument control panel. smoke appeared from the vehicle. she took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the radiator fan cracked and caused the failure. the belt, radiator fan, thermostat, and water pump were repaired at the cost of $1,000. the manufacturer informed her of nhtsa campaign id number 06v199000 (engine and engine cooling: cooling system: fan); however, the contact never received a recall notice. the manufacturer only covered the expense of the fan, which was $265. the engine warning light is still illuminated on the instrument control panel and the air conditioning system does not work. the failure mileage was 91,000.
Jeep started shaking when brakes were applied. it was noticeable but not horrible. i live in colorado and went up into the mountains where brakes were applied more frequently. had a car load of girl scouts on a camping trip. when the brakes heated up, the car started shaking so violently when the brakes were applied that it was difficult to control the car. the girls were scared to death and the shaking caused me to actually pull over and put the girls out of the car to ride with other people in our group. i have never experienced anything like it in my life. i was in tears by the time we got to the camp site and all the way home it did the same thing. i never got the car over 30 mph in a 2 hour drive home. the car does not shake as violently if the brakes are not that hot, but it definitely shakes substantially. had the rotors repaired but the brake pads were fine. this is the second set of rotors i have put on in the past 18 months.*jb
The rotors in my grand cherokee have failed early on my 2002. i had to have them replaced--under 5000 miles--then at 22000 they failed again and this time they cut them down--now at 35000, i have to have them replaced. these are chrysler / mopar parts--this is a jeep--like a truck--so why is this a problem--not only i have had this problem--when speaking with fullerton, in somerville nj, i was told by the service manager that it has been a problem and even his wife's jeep did it--however since he replaced with a non chrysler/mopar part, he has not seen any continuing problems. i feel that these parts are defective and since this is the 3rd time of this happening, i am annoyed. i called the chrysler consumer line and i was told that if i had called before the vehicle was repaired, that maybe some of the cost could have been adjusted--this is after the fact- can anything be done?*ak
Duel climate control doors not working no heat on passenger side or on driver side. windows fog up and make for dangerous driving conditions. cost 1500.00 to repair and fix. at the dealership they have seen between 8-10 of these since october 2005 and it is only february 2006. when i called jeep about the problem the customer service person told me he was "setting me straight" and that he didn't care if i was a customer again. he would not let me talk to a supervisor and he hung up the phone on me. *nm
I have heated seat in my 2002 jeep gr.ch.lim. that has had to be disconnected, as it heats on it's own, without the power turned on. also, the a/c turns on by itself, as well. *nm
Air conditioner was not blowing cold air. dealership serviced vehicle. and technician noticed that evaporator core malfunctioned. *ak
I have had the rotors on my 2002 jeep replaced 3 times. the vehicle has only 23,000 miles on it. currently there is a service bulletin for rotor replacement. any thoughts of a recall on these rotors?? *jb
Jeep gc 2002-had rotors, pads and calipers replaced at 12,660 miles because of violent shaking during braking on highways at speeds of over 40 mph, had to replace everything again at 23,989 miles and now at my own cost. manager stated that the rotors were "blue" and that someone has been riding on the brakes all the time and that is why they are worped ("blue" from high temperature). that is not the case, i do regular driving in the city and on highway. please investigate as i have found other jeep owners with the same problems all over the united states on the jeep internet forums.
Concern regarding safety of brakes, shake very noticeably when brakes applied. replaced front rotors and calipers. *bf there was continuing unresolved brake problems. the steering would also shake when the brakes were applied, the shaking and pulsation problem worsened, the cd changer had an internal fault, there was a fault in the transmission governor pressure sensor, the transmission leaked from the t casse adapter seals, the front pcv valve leaked at the front grommet on the valve cover, the front body seal was loose, there was a whine when the vehicle was driven up hill and upon acceleration, and the front rotors were out of round. *sc *tc

Air conditioner is blowing out of defroster ducks onto windshield. this causes water to build up on windshield, obstructing driver's view. please provide any further information.*ak
My wife and i purchased our vehicle from el dorado jeep in mckinney texas, on 26 december 2001. the vehicle is still under warranty, and has not cost any out of pocket as of yet. the vehicle in question, a 2002 jeep cherokee laredo was returned to the dealer with a little more than 8000 miles and my wife indicated that there seemed to be a problem with the transmission then, with the dealer unable to find a problem. the vehicle has been returned a total of 7 times for transmission problems, and the dealer unable to find a problem. on one occasion it was returned and the transmission was removed from the vehicle, and clutches that had been burnt, were removed, but they could still not find any problem. seals have been replaced, cables have been adjusted, and specs have been reset, but still the dealer can find no problem with the transmission. the vehicle now has a total of over 40,000 miles, my wife is still experiencing rough shifting, jerking, and sometimes she states that it is trying to lock up as she is driving. this is not a figment of my wife's imagination, i have been in the vehicle when it has done some of these things, and happens without notice. it may operate normally on one occasion, and on another you experience a problem. when will it happen and be the wrong time! the dealership, el dorado chevrolet chrysler jeep of mckinney is owned by stan graff of graff chevrolet of grand prairie texas. upon beginning our last quest with the dealership, my wife was contacted and it was stated to her that they did not believe would be able to fix the vehicle to satisfy her and suggested putting her into a new jeep. they claim they can find nothing wrong with the transmission. they have had several people drive our vehicle and are unable to duplicate the problem. we have talked to others that have experienced the same thing, not just with jeep, but other chrysler products.
