We have classified the 40 complaints from 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee about VISIBILITY into the following categories.
01 jeep grand cherokee limited v8 w/ climate control. blenddoors or related components failed. drivers side vents blow hot air, but passenger side blows cold air when heater is on. prior to this, i had heard what sounded like plastic shattering one morning and every time the vehicle is shut off, the dash creeks for several minutes. *tr
A component known as the heater system "blend doors" failed on my wife's 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited, purchased used in april, 2005. this failure causes a situation where no heated air is available to defrost/demist the vehicle's windows, thus potentially causing loss of visibility and a potentially serious accident. this problem is apparently caused by a design flaw in the grand cherokees heater system from 1999-on. this is so common on these vehicles that there is even an aftermarket fix kit available (vs. the $1,200 i was quoted by our local jeep dealer to fix the problem). this is clearly much more than an occupant comfort issue and, in my opinion, should have been treated by the manufacturer as a safety recall due to the danger to those both in the vehicle and otherwise. what we did not realize is that this is a problem that had been gradually happening virtually since we bought the vehicle until it eventually reached the point where the system completely failed. *tr
Defroster in jeep grand cherokee limited will not defrost passenger side window. this is a know defect in this model jeep and of course not covered by limited warranty. so now my wife can only drive the car during the summer months. *jb
The regulator on the drivers side window failed and the window dropped. it would not stay up on it's own. i took it to my mechanic (not a chrysler dealer). who discovered it was the regulator and replaced it for $275. less than a week later on sat. 9/15/07. the same exact thing happened to the passenger window. i contacted chrysler feeling there must be a defect for both to go within a week of each other. i was told there is no recall and they would not assist me with the drivers window as i did not go to a chrysler dealer. they told me, for the passenger window, to go to a dealer, get a diagnostic done (at my own expense). submit that to them and they would make a determination if they would assist in my repairs. they also said if they did decide to assist, there would be a $100 deductible. so by the time i pay for the diagnostic, the deductible and have to arrange to get the car to the dealer twice, if they do decide to assist me. it's ridiculous. there are literally thousands of posts on line from people who have the same exact experience. one poor man's dog jumped out the window when it fell and was badly injured. i can't believe chrysler is allowed to get away with this at the consumer's expense. this has been going on with these regulators for years. they need to be held accountable. *jb
1) events leading up to failure: i pushed a button to roll up the window. 2) failure: the window 'popped' then fell into the door. 3) what was done to correct the failure: i went to a 5-star certified jeep dealer and was quoted $300 for repairs both times. this has happened on two occasions; once sept. 2006 (driver door) and the other just two days ago - aug. 2007 (passenger front right door). after thorough research on the internet and discussion with the dealer, this is a "common problem with that vehicle." yet the dealer doesn't even keep the part in stock so shipping fees are incorporated. having a window which will not roll up not only puts personal property at risk of theft, but also damage due to rain, wind, snow etc. the most recent occurrence happened during a rainstorm on the interstate. this needs to be addressed. *jb
The window regulator broke on the driver's side. the part that broke was on the regulator and a cable connects to it. the part was made from plastic and was not strong enough to handle the weight of the window and it broke. i am the original owner and always took great care of my jeep. the dealer wants $270 for a new one (not including labor) and this is very disappointing as nothing out of the ordinary was done to cause this piece of plastic to break. *tr
2001 jeep grand cherokee power window failure. this is the second power window that has failed. the driver's side door failed in early 2007 and the passenger side failed in august of 2007. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the driver side window only rolled a quarter of the way down. minutes later, the passenger side window dropped all the way down. she has not notified the manufacturer or a local authorized dealer. the failure and current mileages were 146,000.
Was driving in a down pour and there was a very loud bang on the passenger door and the window slid down, this is a common problem with jeep i'm told and this is the second time for me...................help!!!!*jb
My '01 grand cherokee a/c and heater is uncontrollable. fan comes on but no air from vents.this seems to be a defect that is not uncommon with this model.several online sites show that this is not an isolated situation.60 k miles and jeep tells me that its out of warranty and they will not help.
We purchased this vehicle used with a warranty insurance policy. the sales manager assured us that if you push a button or turn something on then the warranty would cover it. the first time we used the heater cold air came out of the passenger floor duct. the warranty covers the automatic temperature control, but the dealer claims this does not include the components of the automatic temperature control system. there is no such component as an automatic temp control, but they dodge they warranty anyway. i have read that i will have to pay $1100.00 to repair this by the time winter comes or else i will have no defroster and will not be safe to drive. the dealers are quite aware of the problems associated with this system but unless someone forces a manufacturers recall the dealers do not receive compensation and will not stand behind their cars. this is a cold weather safety hazard and engineering defect costing consumers unfair and costly repair bills and time inconveniences. *jb
2001 wj (jeep grand cherokee) blend door problems starting around 80,000 and now no heat at 111,111 miles. *tr
Both the driver and passenger side front windows went out within about 6 months of each. broken plastic piece each time. almost $400 to repair each. *tr
Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower air conditioner (a/c heater ventilation component broke for no apparent reason. dealer estimated 2000.00 for repair due to need for dashboard removal. problem was blend door broke or damaged. vehicle normally was running with a/c on, but now it sometimes did not work. problem showed up after taking car for a/c service to jeep dealership. car is 2001 jeep grand cherokee.*ak
On june 15, 2007, as i prepared to go to the airport. i rolled down the driver side window which then just fell completely down into the door. i had to borrow a friends car. this is the second time i had to replace the driver side window regulator. *tr
A/c blend air door problem. high cost of repair. *tr
Air conditioner vents and defroster vents no longer controllable via automatic thermostat. blend door failure. i am unable to heat, cool, defrost, or ventilate the interior of the vehicle including the front defrost function. inability to defrost the front windshield resulted in conditions unsafe for continued operation of the vehicle due to poor visibility. *jb
I have 2001 jeep grand cherokee with electronic dual climate controls will eventually require major repair in order to cure hot air/cold air blowing from vents when they're not set to do so. the cost to repair this issue, which has been known to pop up again after another 50k miles after repair, is generally $800-$1500 from a dealership. should you opt to do this repair yourself, the entire dashboard will need to be removed, quite the arduous process, and parts are approximately >$300.
The heater and defroster have completely malfunctioned. this has caused the vehicle to be unsafe in cold temperatures. sudden fogging of the windshield decreases visibility to near zero and forces the driver to pull over and manually wipe the windshield. this is a common problem to this particular vehicle and is very expensive to remedy. the average cost i have been quoted to fix has been 1485.00. the entire dash, steering wheel, air bags etc. have to be removed to access the faulty mechanism. i am concerned that if any of these major safety components are damaged or removed/replaced improperly it could lead to a serious injury to the occupants. the cost of the dealer repair will lead some to have these fixed by unqualified technicians and serious safety issues will arise from faulty airbag and steering component replacement.*ak
Blend doors on ac system broke!!!!!!!!! *jb
Have had driver and passenger window regulators replaced: paid $400 at jeep dealer and second window $345. the passenger side is rarely used; we feel these regulators are defective. *tr
(1) - possibly weak plastic used during manufacturing (2) - failure on the climate control doors hvac system in the my 2001 jeep grand cherokee, causing the heating-a/c system to malfunction (3) - dash needs to be removed to access hvac control box. est. cost form dealership is $1200.00 dollars. removal of entire dash is required. *jb
The hvac system in my 2001 grand cherokee jeep has gone out on both the passenger side and the driver side of my vehicle. i feel there should have been a recall on this items from chrysler corp. i understand there has been a problem with this mid-case blend assembly for quite some time. now it is going to cost over a $1000.00 to replace. i believe it should be seriously considered for recall because of the safety hazard of driving. the afternoon it went out, i was leaving from work and a blinding snow-blizzard came, the temperature dropped and i ran off the road, due to the my windows icing up and fogging up...i had no way to defrost them. i had to drive a considerable distance to get home. i put my vehicle in 4-wheel low and managed to get out of the ditch, but i was extremely lucky and very cold when i did reach my home. *jb
I have owned five jeep grand cherokees. 1999 - 2002. everyone of them has had heating cooling blender door failures. there is obviously an improper design for this component. the entire dash has to be removed to repair it at a great expense. one vehicle i had to have done twice in about 4 months time frame. *nm
Heater on my 2001 jeep cherokee has gone out. apparently it is a common problem and expensive to have repair. the motors that control the doors strip out & will not move. i have heard it is around 1500 dollars to have repaired at the dealership. i feel that there should be a recall to have this issue resolved. *jb
Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower. *jb
A faulty blower motor resistor has rendered my heater from working. the temp is around 20 degrees and without the blower, i cannot defrost my windows to drive safely. the blower motor resistor is out of the vehicle with visual electrical charring. the wiring harness is also melted. i've talked to 2 different dealers and their parts department has dealt with this problem before. so, i contacted the jeep customer service 800 number. but according to your "customer service" line, i need to get my vehicle back to the dealer so they can tell me what i already know. my question is why the blower motor resistor is back ordered 4,000-6,000 parts? and why if i take my vehicle back to the dealer, will i be expedited a part. are they creating a demand by not supplying the part and then the dealers raise the price of the part? i have already had one dealer say that if they locate one, that it'll cost more than the price advertised on their web site. this is the worse customer service i have ever had. *jb

Jeep grand cherokee laredo 4.7l v8. climate control door/system failure. $1200 to $1500 to fix at dealer. the replacement parts only last around 2 years having to keep replacing same parts. every other year. *nm
The windshield defogger-defroster and climate control system are faulty . he electronic heat controller has been replaced in the 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited on 2 previous occasions and the fault still occurs. the flow doors of the heating system are sticking open and preventing warm air from entering the defroster ducts or the cabin heating ducts. the vehicle often frosts over the windshield and side windows while driving and can not be safely cleared. i have taken the vehicle to the jeep dealership for repairs twice while under the factory warranty and once after it expired. the cost of the repair is over $1,000. a manufacturers safety recall is in order to repair this defect. *tr
Windshield defroster failure. *jb
2001 jeep grand cherokee. no heat on the passengers side in the winter, ac doesn't work correctly according to the dial settings. defrost and defogger doesn't work as should. have to have the drivers side window open some to be able to see and keep the windshield clear. windshield fogged up too quickly once last winter and i put the vehicle in a ditch at 5am in the middle of winter. got a small cut over the right eye. my understanding i will have to get the ac/heat blend doors and actuators replaced in the unit which requires the dash to be removed and cost is over 1000 us dollars. the parts are inferior and made of plastic and as i can see by the number of complaints on the internet there are many, many failures. i have not had the repair done because it's just too expensive. *tr
Blend door on 2001 jeep grand cherokee. *tr
Blend door failure on dual zone climate controlled 2001 jeep grand cherokee. this was repaired by a dealer at a cost of $1000 dollars, and has failed again 2 months later. *nm
Research has shown all 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees with electronic dual climate controls will eventually require major repair in order to cure hot air/cold air blowing from vents when they're not set to do so. the cost to repair this issue, which has been known to pop up again after another 50k miles after repair, is generally $800-$1500 from a dealership. should you opt to do this repair yourself, the entire dashboard will need to be removed, quite the arduous process, and parts are approximately >$300. *tr
2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo -- every window regulator has broken at least once. driver side window regulator has been replaced twice. windows fall down when regulator fails, which is potential broken glass hazard, according to the mechanic (which is why he refused to permanently wire the window up for me). i took off the back door panels and wired the windows up with steel wire myself to prevent them from falling (and saving me $800, or $400 per window). based on the number of complaints this is obviously a terrible design, and no one should have to spend thousands of auto maintenance dollars to get their windows to roll up! *tr
The heater on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee does not work on the passenger side. the blend door has failed. *nm
A/c , heater does not function properly, sporadic air flow. *tr
While using the heat on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee the passenger side will get cold and no heat will come out from the passenger side vents just cold air. i went to the local jeep dealer to have the problem diagnosed, and they said that the passenger blend door actuator failed, and were going to charge $1,300.00 to repair and replace the damaged parts and is not covered under the warranty. i have been doing some research on this part and problem and from just putting the part numbers (#05134349aa auto a/c mid case blend assembly and #05134347aa auto a/c air recirculation assembly) into google it seems to be a common problem with most recent jeep grand cherokees laredo and limited. i have found at least two jeep forums where this problem is posted. daimler chrysler knows about this problem and has issued a technical service bulletin tsb (#24-001-04). i do not see why this has not been an issue of recall or falls under any warranty that is provided by daimler chrysler. *jb
The defroster system blows only cold air making it difficult(impossible at times) to clear the windshield. this issue occurs repeatedly on cold raining days and makes visibility out the front windshield very poor. this issue could result in a serious traffic accident. the issue is well known in 99-04 jeep grand cherokees with the dual climate control systems. to correct the issue the entire dash, steering wheel, a/c evaporator and heater core must be removed to gain access to the blender doors and recirculation doors which are the cause of the issue. this issue occurs in 100% 99-04 jeep grand cherokees vehicles quipped with the dual climate control system, so the probability of a death(s) occurring due to this defect are extraordinarily high. please take the appropriate action to protect the public. *nm
My 2001 jeep grand cherokee heater/ac blend doors are stuck. i cannot defrost. this causes dangerous situations where the wind screen is fogged, and i cannot see the road. *jb
The defroster doesn't work correctly due to the blend doors failing to open when needed. i see this as a very dangerous safety issue in cold/icy weather here in new england. it seem to be a common problem after speaking with the jeep service people and other grand cherokee owners. *jb
2001 jeep grand cherokee blowing cold air and making cracking sounds from the dash. can not at times stop the cold air coming from dash and vents. *nm
2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. blend doors fail and heated air cannot be directed to the windshield causing lack of visibility. i am getting repair estimate for the repair. i understand this may cost over $1500.00. *jb
2001 grand cherokee limited with dual zone climate control. thanksgiving day, noticed that no heat was coming from passenger side vents. thermostat was set to 80 degrees. shut off climate control unit, restarted, no effect. stopped and shut down car, restarted, no effect. no warm air comes through passenger side vents. drivers side works fine. climate control system will not switch between hot and cold air. driver is comfortable, passenger is miserable when it is cold outside. *jb
I get no heat coming out of the vents, only cold air. it was 10 degrees this morning and i have a 45 minute drive to work with no heat. could be a safety issue if i didn't park in a garage. there would be no way of clearing the windshield of ice. went to the dealer and they tell me it could be at a minimum $1,200 to fix it and then they won't guarantee it will be a permanant fix.*cn
There was no heat on passenger side due to blend door failure. therefore defrosting the windshield properly was not possible. this was followed shortly by a leaking heater core which filled the car with coolant mist during vehicle operation. the blend doors assemblies were replaced along with the heater core to solve the problems. *jb
When the weather started getting colder, i tried to use the heat and i couldn't get any hot air to defrost, when my windshield began to frost and fog. while driving home, i had to first pull over and wipe the interior of my windshield, then on my 21 mile drive home, i had to constantly wipe the interior of the windshield while driving. i took the jeep to the jeep/chrysler dealer and was quoted over $1500 for the repair. i can't afford this type of repair and do not have room on my credit cards. i managed to purchase the parts and do the repair myself, with my jeep out of commission for over 2 weeks. i replaced the heater core, recirc blend door, the mid-case blend door, and 2 actuators. i have been told that this can be a consistently aggravating problem and don't look forward to having to do it again. especially now that i have a newborn who will be traveling in the car. this can be a major safety issue, if this engineering discrepancy is not resolved. as far as i know, no one has been injured...yet. this is an accident waiting to happen. i have pictures of all the bad parts and documented repairs thank you. *nm
After going through some online troubleshooting, i just confirmed that the blend door went bad. and yes it is not one first problem i had with my 2001 limited grand cherokee jeep. 8 months ago the drivers side window regulator broke (as in all jeeps), my four brake calipers went bad by just replacing the old pads, and now this. one day, the car just started to blow cold air. before that, i could hear the noises under the dashboard but i thought it was the way it should sound. i had most of the times limited heat in my side and more in the passenger's side. i thought i'm too hot for the car and the sensor just plays with me. but enough is enough. for god sake, how do you want to sell "hardcore" cars, when your cars fail to work under climate garage kept conditions, and driven mostly on a flatland (florida) on road... you should be ashamed of your products. you should call the cheap and not jeep. *nm
