We have classified the 40 complaints from 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee about VISIBILITY into the following categories.
The air blend door malfunctions. no hvac from passenger side.*tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 jeep grand cherokee. when the contact started the vehicle, there was no heat coming from the vents located underneath the dashboard. the plastic vent doors are inoperable; therefore, cold air enters from the outside and freezes the windshield. the dealer stated that the repair would cost $1,800. the contact was informed that the failures were very common with his type of vehicle. in addition, snow and ice on the windshield will not melt due to the lack of heat coming from the vent underneath the dashboard. the failure mileage was 90,000. updated 04-23-09 *bf updated 04/30/09.*jb
the heat does not work to control the defrost. when there is no frost it is hard to see out of the windshield. people say the blend doors are bad in the ac/heater box. *tr
I was driving at 65 mph and all of a sudden my window just fell down into the door. it almost caused an accident. *tr
Blend doors broken.... only heat from one side! *tr
1-i bought the jeep 4/2008. a couple of months after, a window stopped working. i got the regulator fixed. soon after that, another window stopped. i got that one fixed. every time i get one fixed another breaks. now i have 2 windows not working. 2-whenever i turn a corner, it sounds like the wheels are scraping against something. 3-soon after i bought the jeep, whenever it gets wet and i turn corners, there is a sound coming the front like its the axle or something. i have taken it to several people/dealers and no one can find out why. they test drive it and hear it, look underneath and still cant find out why or where the sound is coming from. *tr
Window regulators in this car have broken twice in less than a year and cost $550 to have repaired. i had one repaired in sept 07. i can't afford this and am driving with plastic on my second window this happened too. the windows just drop as i'm driving at 60mph. *tr
I was driving on the highway and my drivers side window suddenly dropped into the door frame. *tr
the first incident occurred while driving, i noticed that the front passenger window began to lower itself without me activating the switch. i attempted to push the switch to make it go up which didn't work. the window then proceeded to lower itself into the door and would not return to the up position. i took the car to my mechanic who informed me that the window regulator had failed and that this is a common problem with this model vehicle. the regulator was replaced at a cost of nearly $500.00. the second incident occurred while the vehicle was parked. i returned to my car after parking it over night only to find the drivers side window was open about 3 inches. i attempted to close the window and had no response from pushing the button up. the window would however operate in the downward position but would not go up. i returned to my mechanic who advised me that the same condition as the passenger side window had occurred. $500.00 later i was back on the road. it is my understanding after reading countless "blogs" on the internet that this is a chronic issue and that daimler chrysler is fully aware of it yet continues to ignore it. *tr
Rear driver side window regulator assembly broke in 06, front driver window regulator assembly broke in 07 and now front passenger window regulator assembly broke in 08. i had to replace the window regulator assembly, found that plastic block that holds the cables to the slide track broke. this seems to be a major design flaw on the assemblies, the plastic block gets old, worn and just cracks or breaks without warning. when this happens the window will just drop inside the door, again without warning. i feel that there should be a safety recall on these window regulators as someone could get hurt. i have the broken oem one that i just replaced if you would like to inspect it. best regards christifer radley *tr
Heat does not work on my 2001 jeep gran cherokee. seems to be a very common problem with an extremely expensive fix($1300)!!! *tr
I was driving today and my windshield began to fog i turned defroster on hi heat and all it did was blow cold air and it made windshield worse. i almost crashed!!! *tr
Blend doors in my 2001 jeep grand cherokee have gone out. *tr
The driver side window went down by itself, and will not go back up. it sounds like the window motor broke. after research on the internet (type in 2001 jeep grand cherokee power window defect), i found many others that shared similar defects in their power windows. *tr
I have a 2001 jeep grand cherokee with about 35,000 miles. the heating system has recently stopped working. i checked this problem on the internet and it seems that many 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees have this problem. it appears to be quite costly to repair. it obviously affects visibility on the windshield. *tr
I own a 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited with 87,000 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems. *tr
Blend doors in the heating system will no longer function creating a safety issue due to the defroster not working in the morning. i have had this replaced once already and it is malfunctioning once again. *tr
Hvac system quit working properly. no heat,no defrost. windows fogged/iced up so that vision was impaired and safety was definitely compromised(mine and others on the road)had dealer repair blend door units(4 parts required and complete removal of dash)at $1200. *tr
Issue with no heat coming from passenger side of vehicle. it is a 2001 jeep grand cherokee with dual heat zones. cost $1,600 to repair, and it still is not working. *tr
Less than 60,000 miles on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited and the blend door actuator & recirc. door have to be replaced at over $1,000.00. not covered by the extended warranty i purchased at the selling dealer 14 months ago for $2,784.00. (avondle chrysler jeep, avondale az). *tr
The vehicle does not blow hot air out the passenger side only cold. the blend doors are broken. hard to defrost a windshield with no heat, hard to see out the windshield. *tr
I cannot see the road because my defogger is broken. this is a common problem on these vehicles. *tr
2001 jeep grand cherokee= my vehicle should have been covered under the lemon laws of the us. equipment failures: - window regulators- replaced 2 - heated seats- both seats have the wires burnt in two in them; possible fire hazard...not covered in recall of a later year - blend doors broke- had to replace all three motors and doors - left turn signal does not function consistently - door lock system is failing: driver's door has quit locking; has to be done manually; back door behind the driver makes a squawking noise when you lock the doors, tailgate is not locking; alarm will go off if you open the door, but it is not locked. _constant small coolant leak. *tr
Heater just stopped working. have a/c but no heat. *tr
Dual climate control blen doors. both sides of the dual climate control will only blow out cold air. this is due to your failure. *tr
The blend door for the passenger side of my 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited has snapped in 2 pieces. the jeep has 56k miles on it. it is practically new. i have tried to repair the door itself 2 times now. pulling the entire dash after having the a/c system drained. the replacement doors are not available at any of the 3 local dealerships. there are no other replacements available. i contacted jeep and was told that they choose not to help me. the book hours for this job are listed as 12 book hours. i have not found anyone with this body style of jeep that has not had this trouble. will no one help in this matter??? the vehicle cannot heat properly nor defrost the windows. this is unacceptable. *tr
2001 jeep grand cheorkee defrost and heat stopped working. blend doors and actuators had to be replaced along with recirc door. $1500+ in parts and labor was told by dealer this happens to all jeeps 99-04. *tr
Malfunctioning air conditioner blended diverters. i have the 2001 laredo and my a/c directional blenders are malfunctioning. i have the manual system which is supposedly less complicated but it seems even the simple ones malfunction. *tr i only have 65,000 miles.
My 2001 jeep grand cherokee will not provide heat on the passenger side, only the driver's side. the vehicle also has some sort of electrical short and the entire system, including the radio will reset and start. in addition the fuel system is reluctant to pump fuel to the engine on a cold start. the dealerships advised me that the car is not built to last forever and the fuel issue and heating issue was typical. the expense however would be extreme for the heating and fuel issues to be $800 to $1200 for each repair. *tr
Electric windows keep breaking- 4 times now in same vehicle- one window mechanism has been replaced twice now. first time it malfunctioned, the window automatically rolled all the way up, then made loud clunk sound and window dropped down into the door. this is a safety issue as someone's arm could get stuck with the window rolling up on its own as well as having back windows fall all the way down when my young daughter is in the rear seat. *tr
Please accept this email as a request for help with a common problem concerning jeep grand cherokee owners and problems having to do with ?blend doors? in the hvac system. my vehicle, which my wife drives, heats on the driver's side, but blows cold air on the passenger side. it occurred all at once. it is also a real safety hazard as it creates an icing hazard on the windshield. the cost of repair through a dealership appears to range from $900 to $1500. i have sent an email through the jeep.com website just before typing this to you. i also believe that the apparent inaction of the manufacturer to address this issue in a favorable manner is reckless endangerment of the general public. since they are not addressing it many are seeking less expensive remedies and short-cut fixes, or attempting to do the repair on their own. i can see where this could then flood the used car market with faulty and shoddy repairs. i have to question whether or not it is cost effective to keep the vehicle after it is repaired. there are even numerous posts that indicate the dealerships are not fixing the correct problems with added expense to customers. and still others that indicate that the dealers do not want to spend the time to do the repairs due to the difficulty and time consumed, and the very real possibility that this repair will spark other problems. there are some who note that taking the dash out and reinstalling it causes all kinds of problems with malfunctioning controls. again, it?s a real safety problem in northern areas of the country. and many people in these areas look for 4 wheel drive vehicles as a safety factor for driving in just those conditions when heat is needed in order to see clearly. it certainly raises the question of whether there have been accidents and injury from this kind of issue. i have not yet decided how to effectuate the repairs to my 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. *tr
Dual side heating and air is not working properly on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee. passenger side is ice cold constantly, while my driver's side is working properly for now, but for how much longer? after a lot of reading of other articles, there should most absolutely be a recall, especially if i have to pay that kind of money to get it fixed, then i should be reimbursed. *tr
Heating blower doors inoperative, no heat on pass. side. not repaired as yet. *tr
My blend door in my v8 limited is broken. not covered under warranty, and makes driving in the winter very cold. estimate of 876 to fix. *tr
The failure im having is with the blend doors, from personal experience driving in cold climates your defrost blows cold air onto the windshield making it extremely unsafe to drive the vehicle in cold climates, i was fortunate enough that i didn't wreck or hit anybody else on the road, in my honest opinion this is a serious safety issue, if you think it isn't a problem mr.chrysler i will personal drive to corporate h.q. and hand you the keys and see for yourself, better yet why don't you put your family in the vehicle and go for a ride, and then you be the judge if this is a safety issue ...my guess is you probably will. *tr
The 1999-2004 grand cherokee is built with blend doors to control the heater and ac function. the doors are controlled by a stepper motor that seeks an open and close setting every 20 times the jeep is started. the end points for open or closed are set by a plastic pin that is part of the plastic door assembly. when this pin breaks, the stop points become the open and closed position of the door. eventually, the doors will break(see picture). the most common fail mode is for the broken door to fall to the bottom of the box, blocking the heater core no heat. also, in this position, the door does not do an efficient job of blocking the heat input, and the ac efficiency suffers. the door can also hang in a position where it closes neither the heater core nor ac condenser inlets. when this happens, you have a constant mixture of heat and ac?too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. - the factory solution is to replace the doors and housing with an upgraded part that has a stronger plastic pin to withstand the constant opening and closing when the stepper seeks its beginning position. the repair entails removing the dash panel, steering wheel, all vacuum and wiring harnesses, draining the coolant, evacuating the ac system, and finally removing and repairing the heater box. quotes will range from $1200 to $2200 for the repair...if you can find someone willing to spend two days disassembling the car. it's not difficult, just detailed, and evacuating and refilling the ac refrigerant requires epa certification. dealers don't like to do this because it ties up a technician for an extended period of time and the chances of missing a wire or messing up the re-assembly is high. this is a design flaw! they are aware of the problem and no longer use the same parts when they fix it. the consumer should not be responsible for the outrageous cost of covering their mistake. *tr
Heater does not work properly. *tr
First, when i tried to use the heat, only the passenger side would blow warm air while the driver side was cold. that lasted about a month, then no warm air at all. that was the winter of 2007. then during the summer of 2008, my a/c stopped blowing any kind of air through the vents no matter what setting i used. the system works as far as the blower motor and cooling the air goes, it just doesn't make it out of the vents what so ever. it has been brought to my attention that this is a design flaw regarding the blend/recirculation doors in the hvac system. *tr
Hvac, a/c, defrost, heat not functioning. blend doors, recirculation doors failure at 60,421 mi. dealer repaired and then failed again at 72,170 mi. potential safety hazard in northern climates. windshield cannot be cleared of snow & ice while driving. *tr
No heat on drivers side. passenger side marginally blows air. this is a recurring problem with this vehicle--all years! jeep must be fully aware of it since there are so many complaints and they have a "fix", but at a high cost to the consumer. i will never buy another chrysler product again. *tr
This is a sever problem with my 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. the blend door seems to be malfunctioning and if the window begins to fog and i turn the defrost on it shoots out cold and makes the front windshield fog even worse. *tr
First the passenger side would not blow hot air, then the drivers side stopped blowing hot air. now defrost no longer works. failure has not been corrected. repair requires an exceptional amount of money ($1,000+) considering that it is an obvious engineering/manufacturers defect in the strength of the blend air doors and motor assembly. jeep has a "newer" "better" assembly that corrects the problem. part is inexpensive - labor is not since it requires removing entire dashboard. this is a serious issue since it renders the windshield defroster unusable. this is not an isolated issue - it's widespread and covers many year's of production of jeep grand cherokees and possibly other jeep products. upon investigation on the web - it looks like this is a part that will fail on all jeeps and not a question of if but when. just like the brake problem found on similar jeeps (eventually recalled) it looks like jeep is playing the waiting game - and hoping that most failures occur outside of the warranty period (such as ours 70k miles). this is an obvious manufacturers defect. the original parts were not engineered properly. jeep obviously knows this or they wouldn't have created a "fix" for the problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 jeep grand cherokee. when the contact attempts to activate the heater in cold weather, it does not function properly. she also cannot defrost the windshield while driving at any speed. the mechanic stated that the blend air door caused the failure, which is common for the grand cherokee when it reaches 50,000 miles or greater. the current and failure mileages were 85,000.
My heat only comes rom one side of my 2001 jeep grand. *tr
A/c blend door failure on 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. $1300 to fix. *tr
Incident: defog & heat does not work; had to drive 25 miles with windshield wipers on constantly in order to clear windshield, still did not do well even with newer wipers... 1) i woke up, started up jeep grand cherokee in order to defog windshield since it got cooler overnight leaving fog on windshield. 2) defog would not work, even though the vehicle had warmed up sufficiently and temp gauge indicated such as well. 3) had to take to dealer since regular mechanic could not perform service; replaced actuator, blend door and other parts. (unk if replaced parts are available since dealer performed service repair. *jb
No events lead to this. both front seat heaters stopped working. very prone on jeeps. more recently, blend doors, heat/air controls stopped working. half hot and half cold. very prone to grand cherokee. faulty design. *tr
My electronic climate control failed when the blend doors stopped working. i took it to the dealer who said it is a very common problem with jeeps in general. they would need to remove my dash and replace the motors for the blend doors. 1500 dollars later, i am seeing that i am far from alone with this rip off due to poor construction. from 20000 miles on to 90000 i heard a creaking after i shut off my car. now i know what that was: the grinding of the blend motor. *tr
Dash creeks after vehicle is turned off. both passenger and driver side vents blow cold air regardless set climate control temperature or if a/c is on or not. defroster vents blow only cold air. *jb
For several months i have been unable to defrost windows due to the common blend door problem with 99-04 jeep grand cherokees. i have gone to several dealerships to have an estimate and have been quote over 1000.00 on all occasions. although i am without heat that is not my concern. it is the safety concern of not having the ability to defrost windows during extremely cold temperatures. i feel that this is huge safety concern for customers living in cold areas on the us. this is a problem that jeep is aware of and happens on way too many vehicles to go unaddressed. jeep should at least be forced to cover some of the cost for this costly defect. please ensure that something is done about this. *tr
