We have classified the 6 complaints from 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. while inspecting the vehicle, the contact discovered that the skid plate, under the rear of the vehicle that holds the fuel tank, was corroded and rusted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 117,000.
Was removing rear hitch so i could repaint it and noticed that my gas tank shield was rotted and gas was leaking above shield so i removed the rotted shield and found leak.it was caused by dirt and road grime getting in above where shield was rotted.thank god i caught it before shield started to fall and spark against road.come to find out that shield is the only thing holding gas tank in vehicle which i believe is totally a hazard for all grand cherokee owners from 1999-2004 at least.i went online and found out this was a major defect in all from 1993-2004 and yet no recalls.there have been many fires from this and i believe it should be looked at.mine at present just sits in yard as they want 400 hundred for shield and 400 hundred or more for tank.all junkyards tell me that they are all rotted and so they have none to sell.all junkyards tell me the same so i have no idea what to do yet.i could see this if my jeep was not road worthy but there is no rust on it and it runs great. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the rear passenger side sub frame became fractured without warning. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle was unable to be repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 100,000. the vin was not available. *tr
Passenger side front door would not unlock. all doors automatically lock when vehicle speed increases above approximately 15 mph. vehicle was parked and passenger was not able to open door using door handle. after several minutes we were able to get the door to unlock and passenger was able to egress the vehicle. this could pose a serious threat to occupants that could lead to serious injury or death by delaying or preventing their exiting from the vehicle in an emergency or after an accident. this locking system failure also disables the external door operating mechanism making it impossible for someone outside the vehicle to open the affected door thereby making it more difficult for them to assist those inside the vehicle. this make, model and year vehicle has a recall that addresses loss of fuel tank integrity following a rear end collision. if the loss of fuel tank integrity resulted in a fire the failure of the door lock system to prevent occupants exiting the vehicle could result in serious injury or death. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1996 jeep grand cherokee. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign id number 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline , structure) and stated that the remedy part was unavailable to perform the repair. the dealer was unable to provide a date for when the part would become available. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the contact had not experienced a failure.
I had a minor hit in rear ..and fuel skid plate got pushed in and almost ruptured gas tank..this happened over a year ago ..now the skid plate is starting to rot/rust out and it would cost over $600.00 to repair ..due to the june 2013 recall of this item i think chrysler should be responsible for this repair ..i contacted them and they said i would not be covered because i did not have a hitch attached to my car ..this is wrong ...what goes here ..can anything be done about this ..i fear now driving my jeep because i have no gas tank skid plate left .. *tr
I purchased this jeep and not even a month after having it cut off with driving down the road. it will say i have no gas and the tank will be full. at times it would start other times it had to be towed (3 times in fact). this has happened 5 or 6 times at all different speeds. i took it to a dealership 450.00 later still had the problem. this is very scary for the jeep to shut off while driving. i have two small children. i am wondering how is there not recall for this. as i have read clearly this is not just my jeep. this is a huge safety concern. another thing i also notice i can hit a bump then it beeps and tells me my hood is open. which it is not. i love my jeep but cant enjoy it bc scared that it will cut off at anytime. *tr
The skid plate covering my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo has almost completely rusted off the vehicle. with the current investigation requested for older model jeep grand cherokees, i feel this requires a recall and all older jeeps should be retrofitted with new skid plates. *tr
Drive seat front left corner pulled metal over floor bolt causing a broken seat and safety hazard. *tr
My 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited w/42,000 miles. yes . not a typo . 42,000, orignal owner & "scared to death" to drive this suv. i have alot of the already problems, that have been reported. had to pay many, w/my own cash. this suv schould have came in 1 color "lemon yellow". it is an accident watng to happen. the recent problem is now i have no a/c-heat or defroster. ths is due, to failure of the automatic temp control to work. i t started 1st by intermittently working, till now not working at all, this is just 1 more, to the list , of many other problems. i don't think that it is an coincidence that all my issue have happenned, almost exactly, in the order, of all the other complaints. i can't undestand how a company can get away w/this. this new problem can cost up to $2000, if it is, like previous reported problems, happens to be the "blend doors". as a handicapped driver i drive less than 4,000 miles a year. this is the only auto i drive, thus the many, many probs have yet to raise thier head. i have read almost all complaints(too many to read) this suv schould be a "total recall, i have never heard more complaints & problems, in my life, for any automobile. this suv schould be studied & reseached, on "how not to build an automobile. just read the many complaints here & on the internet. we are not making this stuff up. i don't know how they stayed in business as long as they did. we, the taxpayers, bailed them out. who is bailing out all the owners, of this "death-trap"? if that is not absurd enuff, many problems could have been repaired, by jeep & still can. what is the purpose, of nhsta, if not to intervene? you have all the complaints. hundreds of them. you have them posted, yet, we taxpayers/owners safety, has been at risk ever since this suv was driven out of the showroom. how did you not make a recall on the rotor/brakes issue which was reported at 3,000 miles? i am so frustrated. is braking problems not a safety issue? please, help us! *tr
This incident started with a clunking noise we thought was the muffler system, in fact, the day before the car failed we had the muffler replaced. on 6/17/09 while our daughter was driving, the vehicle veered sharply to the left, she pulled over, a police officer assisted and followed her for a while to see what the problem was. it didn't do it while the police officer watched. after the police officer left, the vehicle lurched again and our daughter pulled over and called her father, he drove the vehicle and that is when the frame broke and the support to the rear axle separated from the frame. the rear wheel on the passenger side was bound against the front of the rear wheel well leaving the vehicle completely undriveable. the vehicle was then put on a trailer and delivered to our mechanic. we paid our mechanic to repair it before we thought of pursuing a claim through chrysler. we contacted chrysler and was given a case no. 18690533 and was told we needed to take it to a jeep dealer. as instructed by chrysler, we took the vehicle to royal chrysler in owego, new york. royal was very friendly and supportive to us and after inspection, stated it was the "most corroded underbody they had every seen" and communicated the same to chrysler directly. chrysler was not at all interested in entertaining our claim and stated it was too far out of warranty. we currently own 3 jeeps and expected chrysler to stand behind their product. it is not a vehicle we feel comfortable having our teenage daughters drive. after numerous telephone calls to chrysler by both the dealer and ourselves, they flatly refused to entertain the claim and even refused to allow us to even talk to a manager. the potential for what could have happened to all 3 of our daughters (all 3 were in the car at the time) had they been driving on the highway at 60 mph is frightening. the fact that chrysler is unwilling to recognize and correct this situation is unacceptable. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. while driving various speeds, the vehicle would completely shut down. there were no lights and no power steering when the vehicle shut off. there were no warning indicators prior to the failure. the failure also occurred several times while driving 75 mph. the contact had to wait 2-3 minutes before the vehicle would restart. she took the vehicle to the dealer a few times and they stated that the crank sensor was the cause of the failure. the dealer removed and replaced all the codes; however, the failure recurred three times afterwards. she returned to the dealer in april of 2008 and was informed they wouldhave to run more tests. the contact then traded in the vehicle for a newer model. the current mileage was 83,074 and failure mileage was 81,808. updated 07/15/08. *lj there was a noise coming from the steering when the consumer made left turns. the hatch shocks were replaced
Tl* - the contact has a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited. the contact stated that he filed a complaint last year (14939715), because one side of his vehicle rusted and the frame of his vehicle fractured. the contact stated that on 03/17/2007 he took his vehicle in for inspection and found that the other side is now rusted and a section by the front wheel well will soon be sheared off of his vehicle. the current and failure mileage were both 104000 miles.
I'm uncertain of time of incident. the driver that hit me blew a stop sign and crashed into my rear driver side which caused my truck to do a complete 360 hitting 3 cars while i was spinning. *tr
While checking under the hood struts snapped, causing the hood to fall down. dealership notified, but the problem was not resolved. *ak
The pistons holding up the front hood assembly failed and can no longer bear the weight of the hood. no one was injured when the initial failure occured. this presents a major problem when servicing the vehicle as there is no other reliable mechanism to hold up the hood. placing a stick or other object to hold this open is an accident waiting to happen. jeep was contacted and would not pay for replaing this faulty component. other pistons which hold up the rear hatch as well as the pop-up glass also cannot effectively hold up the weight of the conponents they were designed for. *ak
