Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee with an aftermarket drive works tie rod, part number: de-es3475. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle exhibited an abnormal noise. the steering wheel also pulled to the right and the contact lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a tree. the vehicle was towed to the contact?s home where a mechanic inspected the vehicle. the failure was located at the front driver?s side inner tie rod tread, which separated and caused the nut and pin to release. the contact did not sustain any injuries. the police department was called an a report was filed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 236,000. updated 8/5/13 *cn the consumer stated the tie rod end he purchased from his local retail store was defective. the threads on the end, were worn.

I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo and the fuel pump went bad and i could smell smoke, like and electrical problem. the mechanic said it was the fuel pump and i authorized him to repair. i then looked online to find that the fuel pump which my jeep had was a recalled aftermarket fuel pump from airtex. i called airtex and they gave me the run around asked me all sorts of questions , are you sure this is the right one and did i have the part to ship back to them. i called the mechanic and he already replaced it with a new airtex fuel pump and threw the other away. i have the receipt but cannot send the old fuel pump back. they refuse to reimburse me for this recalled product even when my mechanic wrote down the old make and model number of the old recalled fuel pump. this is wrong and unfair. $500 i am out . *tr

My drivers seat has broken down and become very uncomfortable, and the passenger side makes a clunk noise when someone sits in it during breaking and acceleration this is. one of the many things to have broken on this seat. very poor quality! *tr

Heater a/c for 1999 jeep grand cherokee... failure to operate, ridiculous to repair. makes driving in cold climates impossible, due to window fogging and ice buildup. daimler chrysler should recall and repair all jeeps from 1999-2004 who are all known to have this problem. they should not be allowed to disregard the customer complaints, with regards to this. this was repeated year after year, with no easy solution for customers to repair. an excessively costly and not guaranteed procedure which could create more problems, even when professionally repaired, this is a safety hazard for those who must drive in cold climates. *tr

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited's heater control unit has become faulty. the heat does not work on any setting, and outside cold air comes into the cabin with zero control. this is making visibility very poor due to lack of defrosting the front windshield. i brought it to the dealer, and they informed me that it was due to a poor "design" from the factory. they told me that it was going to cost $1,766.00 plus tax to repair this problem. i feel that there should be a recall issued to fix this problem seeing it becomes a safety risk due to poor visibility. *tr

I ran into what i thought was a simple heating problem with my 1999 grand cherokee. one day while driving down the road, my car simply stopped blowing hot air. after going to the dealership and spending nearly $600 to have some sort of solenoid replaced, i realize after pulling out of the lot that only my passenger side will blow hot air. i called the dealership back, and they told me that it was a problem with the blend doors, and will likely cost between $1,000 and $1,500 to fix. the repair requires a complete disassembly of the dash and steering column (around 10-12 hours for a full repair, according to the shop). i began to look around online to see what else could be done. to my surprise, nearly every jeep message board was flooded with posts about this exact problem. the engineering of the part virtually ensures that it will fail; the calibration phase (every 20 or so start-ups) forces the plastic part to its limits and eventually breaks. every dealership or auto repair shop that i contacted said that virtually every 1999 and newer grand cherokee has, or will have, this problem. the issue isn't paying for car repair; every car has problems that we as consumers will need pay to get fixed. the problem is that the engineering of this part causes it to fail, and now i'm stuck not being able to defrost my windshield in the winter, or now in springtime when it rains. there is no doubt in my mind that this has already, or will cause in the future, accidents from people not being able to see. many people, including myself, would rather drive down the road while wiping the windshield with a rag... than pay $1,500 to get it fixed. for many people, spending that $1,500 isn't even an option. *tr

A defective a/c part failed behind the dash, causing extensive repair costs. *tr

The solenoid continues to go out, threatening damage to the transmission. it has went out twice within a year of replacement. *tr

Front disc brake rotors warp causing vehicle front end to shake when braking, vehicle has chrysler's latest and greatest brake pad and rotor kit installed. *jb

The air conditioner (ac)/heat do not work on the1999 jeep grand cherokee. the likely problem is the failure of the poorly designed/manufactured blend doors. estimated repair cost: $1200. i was informed by mechanic that this is a common problem with this vehicle. it is outrageous that such a system would fail so often and cost so much to fix. *ak

I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee ltd, also referred to as wj. in the 2 years i have own this jeep certain problems came up. apart from the issue with the front brakes warping the rotors, and needing upgraded calipers and new rotors replaced. which the dc dealers didn't want to acknowledgments other issue and equally troublesome and probably dangerous is the current issue of the hvac system no working properly. this problem is very common amongst these vehicles. i have a little heat blowing on the driver side compartment, but 0 heat and all cold on the passenger and defrost. god help me if im stuck on the side of the road during the winter, which it is right now. my passengers and i would not fair well. the cold blowing from the pass. side vents and defrost is like the a/c was on. now, this issue is the blend doors are broken, chrysler and jeep both now of this issue. and the cost of the repairs of course are very high from the dealership, as it involves removing the dashboard the center console and the steering column. this has to be a recall and fix their expense at least. *nm

A/c problem in my jeep grand cherokee 1999. *jb

Loss of vehicle control during braking while traveling at highway speed. no injury sustained however that was only due to the skill and attentivness of the driver. failure caused by factory defective braking system. ongoing problem endemic to the vehicle, repaired four times during first 46000 miles. *nm

I drive a jeep grand cherokee with 68,000 miles and just had the brakes fixed again for the 6th time. my dealer keeps telling me the parts are inferior and i can expect to replace the brakes after 6-7000 miles. i feel this is excessive and jeep should be able to develope a material that will help the brakes last longer. other makes of cars never have the problem that jeep does. i also feel this could be very dangerous since not every one can afford to replace the brakes every 7,000 miles. i can see by the internet that there are thousands of complaints, can't you do something before this is a fire, property damage or crash?

Since i owned this vehicle it has been a hazard safety for me and my family.i can honestly say im afraid even to sell it and pass the problem on to someone else.until someone gets killed is when jeep will finally due something about it.the brakes and rotors are constantly warping or failing.constant shuddering/vibrating in slow speed stop and high speed decelaration stop.on this site alone there is 326 complaints about the same issue, but nothing is being done.dealer just turns rotors and fixes pads.how many times do you actually turn a rotor.come on already.there is a class action lawsuit against chrysler in effect right now as im writing this.it is only valid for kansas/missour residents only.hello the rest of the country has the same problem with the cherokee.rotors and pads have been serviced only nothing else.i took the vehicle to another brake shop for a second opinion.they stated to me the rotors are not appropriate for this vehicle and jeep should have replaced them along with new calipers.all a want is an end to this problem.i replaced the rotors and pads again at my expense.still same problem.i previously had 2 jeeps before earlier models with no problems.i guess chrysler has lost another customer.*ak

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee with the infamous automatic dual zone climate control. currently the passenger side of this system blows heat through the hvac ducts but the drivers side only blows cold air. this is a common problem on jeeps with the dual zone climate control and costs about $800 to repair. daimlerchrysler should recall the thousands of jeeps that have this problem. *ak

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee's radiator fan failed to work, causing the vehicle to overheat. this was diagnosed as an inoperative fan relay by a jeep dealer. this issue is one of many intermittent mechanical problems plaguing this vehicle since purchasing it new, however this complaint is being filed for 4 specific reasons: 1) this type of problem resulting in total failure should not occur in such a new vehicle, 2) a breakdown of this type (overheat) may cause collateral damage to the vehicle which will not be known about until a future event occurs, 3) i am a women who travels alone often and any breakdown puts my personal safety at risk, 4) to help prevent others from experiencing this if this report assists in determining that this issue is a systemic problem with this vehicle. i understand that proactive resolution of this problem was not likely, however i have attempted to find out information on systemic problems with 1999 jeep grand cherokees in order to be an informed consumer and be proactive in my maintenance checks of my vehicle to avoid breakdown. this information is not readily available from the dealerships, therefore it puts the consumer at more risk than necessary. daimler chrysler should take more responsibility and improve communication on these issues. this model year vehicle has been plagued with known problems, two of which cost me the loss of my vehicle over 2 different weekends, 2 different breakdown events while i was driving alone, in addition to at least 12 other service events. *ak

The rotors on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo are going bad after having them done last year. this is a known problem with jeeps. i feel this should be looked into because this is not a norm. *nlm

This is my sixth replacement of the rotors and chrysler has informed me that they will not be responsible for the defective parts continuing to fail. the dealer states that approximately 1,000 customers have had replacement rotors installed and more than 20% continue to return because of pulsation and brake problems. i believe that there should be a recall after countless thousands of customers like myself have had to endure not only unsafe driving as a result of this problem, but inconveniences, additional out of pocket costs, time wasted and the hassles of dealing with the manufacture. this problem will not go away unless nhtsa does something. thank you for your attention to this important issue. *nlm

1999 jeep brake rotors- shaking while braking. purchased jeep with 45,000 mile and they resurfaced them before i purchased the vehicle. know at 60000 mile it shakes again pulling like anti-lock brakes activated. it is very serious shaking and if not prepared could and probably has caused accidents. took jeep in for unrelated service and they told me that jeep has come out with new rotors for this problem and that it would cost me $407.00 double what regular rotor would cost?? i want to know if someone can help explain why they are not backing their product if they know there is a problem? they obviously know this other wise why are they trying to sell me another product to fix their defective product. i have heard and read many complaints about jeeps and the brake rotor problems know after checking this office's complaint files. some one please point me to whom i should talk to. i am in the law enforcement field and have never had a vehicle shake while braking like this before is jeep not backing it's vehicles?? *nlm

We are in a disupute with dialmerchrysler regarding a engine repair with our 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo. on dec. 23, 2002 we broke down on the highway because a rocker arm spring broke causing a rod to break through the valve cover and drop down into the engine causing $1600 in damage. the jeep has 43,000 miles on it and is no longer under warranty. we purchased the jeep in feb. 2002 and since that time we have replaced the rotors, a leaking seals and now the engine problem. when we approached chrysler about possible assistance with the repair bill, we were told that there was no previous history of enging problems and we did not purchase the extended warranty so they would not help us. our point is that it would have been doubtful that the engine would have had this kind of problem (nor should it have this problem) with such low miles. also, we were never offered an extended warranty at time of purchase. when we discussed this with the salesman he stated that cost was an issue when buying the jeep so he didn't want the price to be any higher. isn't cost always the issue when buying a new car and shouldn't we have been offered a chance to purchase the warranty? we feel that a $6 spring shouldn't cause $1600 to an engine anyhow. is there any way you could be of help to us?

During four years of ownership of a 1999 jeep grand cherokee, i have had 5 replacements of rotors. causing serious vibrations of the wheels, steering and the entire auto. *nlm

Warped rotors at 15,000 on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee. front rotors replaced with new style brakes, but warped again at another 15,xxx miles.*ak

All four brake rotors wore out excessively which has caused vibration in steering wheel when applying brakes. brake rotors have been resurfaced every ten thousand miles. consumer has contacted dealer, and dealer has turned the rotors. however, problem still occurs.*ak consumer states air conditioner was not cold enough. *slc

All dash guages spin around, tachometer is inoperative and speedometer is blank.*jb

Differential side pinion bearings replaced. *slc

No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak

In shop 5 times since purchase and problems still not fixed

Repeated problems with ac/heat being erratic, will take vehicle in for 4th time. vehicle shuddered, fixed by changing fluid. weather seal fell off. brake shudder fixed by replacement of rotors, etc. engine stalled fixed, but the rev up and lurch at stop is not yet. setting another appointment with service. *ak

Ac is not cooling car down dealer saids that ac is ok, problem with ac & heat on a long trip, took to a auto shop was told to much ac fluid in system which cause heat to come out of ac, was drain & refilled. ac is colder than before 'but' still not cold enough, system in other 1999 cars are much colder than jeep.not a happy consumer.

Since date of purchase wipers did not function, air conditioner intermittently fails to blow air for periods up to 30-60 seconds. can occur repeatedly, with only seconds in between. overhead computer system repeatedly sounds alarms that the lift gate is open when it is closed. rear defroster comes on at its own whim, and at times will not turn off unless key is turned off. transmission was replaced. on board panic system (integrated with the keyless entry system) goes off at will, sounding the horn and flashing lights. occurs almost continually when vehicle is locked. the body control module was replaced, numerous attempts at investigating the wiring, replacing connectors and sensors have still left us with the defects. the vehicle is well known in the community because it simply cannot be silenced. we have been told that numerous other 1999 and 2000 models of grand cherokees have had similar problems, especially with respect to the transmission which has caught fire when it failed during driving (as related by a jeep dealer service department) we were lucky my husband noticed a problem before it reached the point of no return. please contact if additional information is needed, will be happy to provide whatever it necessary to begin an investigation into the plague known as the grand cherokee. *ak

Air conditioning does not cool. we have had it to the dealer 4 different times and they have not been able to fix the problem. we were told there is a vacuum leak somewhere. the dealer has added different parts to aid in the vacuum, but nothing is working. this problem has affected the use, value, and possibly the safety of the vehicle.

Brakes still squeak after being replaced several times. air conditioner worked intermittently. there was also a foul odor coming out of it. had to fill with freon once a month. no air conditioner now. *tt

While driving at 40 mph, and upon pressing down on brake, vehicle shaks very hard, rotors appear to be very worn, vehicle has been taken to dealer approximately 5 times already. *ak consumer also stated there is a ticking noise from engine when starting up,steering damper and drag link assembly were loose, transmission shifts hard into reverse, right rear turn signal bulb was replaced, vehicle began to overheat, right side mirror was cracked, speaker was inoperative, the trim on the door panel was loose, exhaust system was loud, parking brake needed to be adjusted, passenger side seat belt was inoperative, passenger wiper blade was not cleaning the window, keyless entry remote was inoperative*slc
