Recently reported SEATS problems on 2006 Jeep Commander

All the lights on my dash panel went on & i lost power of the vehicle driving down the road. it came back on then off & on. this has happened several times. my catalytic converter has broken into a few pieces. the dealership said this happens often to these vehicles & believes there is a recall on them. i have had my vehicle 4 1/2 yrs & this is the 2nd time it needs to be replaced. my struts have gone a few times on my 2006 jeep commander. the rear seatbelt in the middle & driver rear don't latch & when they do its really tight on my daughter. lastly multiple issues with the rear doors both passenger & driver sides. the handles don't work all the time. they have both been fixed 3 different occasions. they open when they feel like it. the child lock is not on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 55-60 mph, the rear seat spontaneously caught on fire. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact extinguished the fire. afterwards, the horn and radio failed to work and all the instrument cluster warning indicators illuminated. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the contact called the local dealer (jake sweeney chrysler jeep dodge ram, 85 w kemper rd, cincinnati, oh 45246, (513) 782-1000) and was informed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 260,000.

Seatbelts do not latch properly and become undone while tightening. they also become stuck.this could pose a serious problem in the event of an accident.

Vehicle was sold with no lights in back, including break and reverse lights, broken seat belts in back seats and one back seat that does not fold down which blocks rear view, and finally with bald tires that needed to be replaced immediately. the lights were supposedly fixed by the dealership's repair shop but after only a few weeks the lights were not working. the seat belts were supposed to be replaced and we were told that replacements were ordered but the dealership never called back to confirm that they arrived and ready for installation, they still have not been replaced. we were told that the tires and seat folding down were not safety issues and had to replace the tires ourselves. the seat still does not fold down and the lights on the back of the vehicle still don't stay on.

Seat belt warning chime continually sounds when front driver or passenger seat belts are latched, the seats are occupied, and the vehicle is in motion.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the rear seat belts failed to buckle. also, the front driver and passenger side head rests failed to push up. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was not taken to dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not provided. the failure mileage was 148,000.

My daughters were in the 3rd row seating when they went to buckle their seatbelts and they would not click in. they were both broken and would not stay attached. the plastic casing is falling off of them and they are not safe. the 3rd row right seat would not fold down. the latch that should be pulled would not engage and now the seat will not fold down. lastly, the drivers side interior door handle crumbled inward and is not able to be used to open the door. i took my car to the dealer and they stated that it was my problem as it is not covered under the extended care warranty i purchased for $2500 and i would have to pay $700 for the door handle and $300 for seat belts and $100 for the seat to fold. i explained that the above was all safety issues and should be fixed by manufacturers and they said that it wasn't covered. i even told them that i saw the recalls and they told me that it wasn't for my jeep. this needs to be fixed by the manufacturer and considered a recall. *tr

When attempting to move my child's car seat to the 2nd row driver side outboard, the car seat is unable to be installed properly. our britax marathon car seat cannot be moved from the center position to an outboard position because the head rests on the 2nd row seat tilt forward and cannot be removed. with two children in the car i will be forced to move my older child to a less stable and less safe backless booster seat, so that i can put my second child in the infant seat in the center position. had i known this at the time of purchase i would not have purchased this vehicle. jeep has had many complaints but does not offer a solution or seem to care about child safety. manually removing the head rest by disassembling the seat may leave 8" posts exposed, also not safe for children. *tr

Electrical dash board blinks while driving, driver's seat moves while driving, when it rains the driver's floor is soaked with water and passenger side floor is wet as well, vehicle jerks while driving. indication lights pops on dashboard sporadically, radio and navigation doesn't work. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. when she attempted to install the safety seat in the forward facing position ,she noticed that the vehicles rear seats head rest tilted forward;which does not allow the safety seat to rest against the seats back . she could not remove the head rests or push them backward; therefore the safety seat could tilt over if there was an accident. she contacted the manufacturer. a representative stated that this was how the seats head rest was designed and that there was nothing they could do to assist with the installation of her safety seat. she was advised to file a complaint with nhtsa. the safety seat was a como manufactured by recaro she did not have the model number. the current and the failure mileages were 65,000. *cn updated 02/17/10

Dt*: the contact stated there was rust on the base of the front seat. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who declared all jeep commanders rust in that manner and did not provide any solution to correct the problem. the manufacturer was contacted and no solution was provided. the weatherstrip on the right rear door did not fit properly and the trim around the radio did not fit as well. updated 08/21/06. *jb

I recently purchased a 2006 jeep commander and after bringing it home, i came across a design flaw that has become a fairly huge problem for my family. it seems as if the head rests on the second row seats cannot be removed. this poses a big problem for my four-year-old daughter who must use a booster seat. in order for this booster seat (or any booster seat, for that matter) to lay flat against the back of the car seat, the head rest must be removed. frankly, in every one of my previous vehicles, a head rest could be selectively removed by pressing a button at the top of the seat and sliding the head rest up and out. the commander head rests seem to be fixed in place. they just seem to move forward when you flip the seat down to access the third row. to make matters worse, they are fixed in a slightly forward position, which forces the booster seat to pitch forward. i can correct that slightly by reclining the seat back, but, in the commander, the second row seat only slightly reclines. in any case, the booster can't be installed properly (or safely, according to the manual) because it can't rest against the back of the seat due to the head rest, which pushed the top of the booster seat forward. after complaining to daimler-chrysler, i received an email saying the indeed the head rest cannot be removed or adjusted. they offered no fix for this issue. *nm
