The common denominator for what i experienced has been that the car is moving slowly, 5-20 mph (7th or 8th gear), and you floor the accelerator while changing the lane (to merge quickly). all that happens for 1-2 seconds is that the car coasts at the speed you were going (absolutely no power is applied to the wheels), and you see the revs going up and the transmission shifting to a lower and lower gear (but not sending any of that power to the wheels), until it gets to the 2nd or 3rd gear and then your head snaps back as it accelerates very quickly (but 2 seconds too late). so instead of the expected takeoff you get 2 seconds of coasting while the car in the lane that you got into is getting uncomfortably close and has to brake to prevent an accident. this is extremely dangerous and unexpected. *tr
