Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2005 Honda Pilot

My 05 honda pilot has 70,000 miles. the car was performing fine until backing out of the driveway and engaging the car into drive. upon engagement the transmission did not engage. a thick chocolate milk fluid is in the radiator and transmission dipstick. the problems results from the failure of a coil in the radiator which caused the transmission to fail. despite american honda's claims, the failure is a result of parts failure not any service recommendations. since the car is just over 4 years old and has 70,000 miles, i requested and was denied a goodwill adjustment. as noted in the recall of 2003 and 2004, honda is known for having transmission problems. other research proves that honda transmissions are not reliable. transmission failure is very dangerous and could cause serious harm to the passengers. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact stated that the vehicle would vibrate excessively when driving at low speeds. the vibration would cease once the vehicle would reach 50 mph. once the contact slowed down and proceeded to accelerate, the vibration would return. the contact was advised by his personal mechanic that the tires were possibly the cause of the failure. the tires were replaced yet the failure persisted. the mechanic then advised that the failure was caused by the torque converter. the vehicle was not further repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 126,445.

Shuddering of vehicle when accelerating. transmission problems. *tr

My 2005 honda pilot shudders/vibrates between 30/40 mph. i have been bringing it into the honda dealer since oct 2009. they told me it was both my drive shafts and replaced them. the same day my car was returned to me the problem continued. they then told me the drive shafts were defective and replaced them again. the problem continued. they looked for trouble computer codes but could not replicate the problem or get a snap shot with the hds. it still shuddered. now the green d (drive) light flashes in drive and in park indicating a transmission problem per the owners manual. *tr

My 2005 honda pilot has a bad torque converter causing the transmission to shudder or vibrate between 35-45 mph. i was told by my service man that the transmission could just lock up which is a safety issue. *tr

My husband and i notice a shudder when you reach a speed of 35-40 mph. we in turn took it into honda to have it checked several times and to test drive, i even drove the honda while the service man was in the car and it would not shudder. it is still having the shudder problems, i am taking it in for the 4th time for service and oil change and maybe the service department can tell me what is wrong and why it shudders. from research we have found out that we are not the only honda pilot owners with this same problem. there are 98 total discussions on this website ( http://www.edmunds.com/honda/pilot/2005/consumer-discussions.html) discussing the same problems we are having, i truly hope that honda is going to stand good on taking care of this problem or we will no longer purchase another honda. we have been told that it is the torque converter. *tr

My 2005 honda pilot ex shudders and vibrates when accelerating lightly between 30-40 mph. it also occasionally makes a "purring" noise between 40 and 50 mph, but not at the same time of the shudder. we have taken it to 3 honda dealers and none can replicate the problems (they can happen 10 times a day or not at all) and refuse to do anything about it. *tr

2005 honda pilot transmission failure. i started having difficulty with the transmission around 75k miles. the whole vehicle would start to shake and shimmy when trying to accelerate going up a hill. this gets scary when there is a turn to negotiate when the transmission is making the whole vehicle shake. at times, i would have to brake, to get the vehicle back under control. i have been afraid several times while driving this vehicle for the safety not only for myself and family but for other vehicles that may be near me as the pilot became unstable while the transmission is shifting going uphill (several near crashes)! i am now at 120k miles, i am told that i need a new transmission due to gear failure and heat. i have had regular maintenance on this vehicle with honda fluids. i do not drive my vehicle hard or take it off road to play. this is crazy! i feel honda should produce a much better and more reliable product. i do not feel i should have to replace the transmission on a 4 year old vehicle. honda has a serious problem here with the safety and reliability of their pilots! i am hoping that you can help facilitate a safe and economic resolution with honda on the fabrication of their pilots. *tr

Vehicle (2005 honda pilot, 118,000 miles) became immobile due to transmission slippage. left wife and two small children stranded. vehicle towed to dealer. when vehicle driven by service tech, it overheated. had not done this before. determined that transmission fluid coil within radiator had likely failed causing coolant to enter transmission and transmission fluid to enter cooling system. coolant causes surfaces of clutches in transmission to be compromised. could not get any help from american honda in making repair, nor from dealer (where car was purchased). traded car in on a 2006 pilot. *tr

Bt shimmy? is this a new dance? not!!!! dangerous vehicle~brakes transmission? shimmy? august 25, 2009 '05 honda pilot brakes lock up while driving. did thorough investigation when this started in may: brakes lock up and vehicle veers and stops while going over 35-40 mph. i am a journalist and did research. numerous complaints: honda says they don't listen to 'websites' what about your customers honda? this was fixed for $500 back in may and happened again while three year old daughter is in the vehicle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! danger danger danger. jack of diamonds service department in tyler texas wants to argue about it. sales manager says i can leave it there ~ b/c he is sure nothing is wrong and will resell it!!!! tyler, texas. further: stranded in greenville, texas most of the day with child. unsafe unsa unsafe. brakes? transmission? shimmy? i don't know. *tr

Front motor mount failed at approx. 60k miles. service department has no know cause for the failure, but says it is likely a material defect. *tr

was driving along a main road in delaware, and my "d" light started flashing. i looked it up in the manual and it said the transmission problem. the light went off after i shut the car off and turned it back on. it has came on a handful of times, but shuts off after i turn the car off and on. i now am experiencing a hard shift, and a shuddering (almost like it is going to stall), and a clucking noise. i have done research and realize there has been many more complaints with this issue in the 2005 honda pilots. *tr

I have a 2005 pilot honda with ongoing shuddering between 30-40 mph. at first i though it was the air flow under the vehicle through the pvc molding. after checking i have been told this is a transmission problem (torque converter) the shudder began at 75,000 and the vehicle now has125,000 miles. to make the shudder stop i press or release the accelerator briefly. the transmission is now starting to shift hard into second gear. i will contact honda of north america next to discuss their findings with this problem. *tr

D light on dash started flashing on interstate trip. brought it into dealer 3 days later. 4th gear pressure switch on transmission had to be replaced. car with 40, 692 miles on it. bought brand new. the repair cost over 300$. *tr

2005 honda pilot torque converter issue when pressing the gas pedal lightly going from 30mph-40mph the car begins to shudder/vibrate. then pressing the gas pedal a little more the shuddering ceases after passing 45mph. problem started around 70,000 mi. now car is around 84,000 mi and problem still persists. have not corrected failure. *tr

I had to replace my radiator at 37228 mileage and 85031 on 2005 honda pilot. the radiators are failing at the transmission fittings attached to the bottom of the radiators. there are several thousand complaints about this issue and honda is denying there is a problem. the problem is the transmission cooler is built into the bottom of the radiator. the cooler sits in the bottom of the radiator. there are two transmission fittings on the out side of the radiator that attach to the transmission. this brings transmission fluid in the radiator cooler, cools the fluid and returns it to the transmission. now inside the bottom radiator sits the transmission cooler which is just a small pipe witch is attached to the transmission fittings. when the fluid enters the radiator cooler it gets instantly cooled and returned to transmission because the cooler is submerged in radiator fluid. this is because the bottom of the radiator is the coolest at the bottom. what's happening is the transmission fittings are rusting away and failing allowing radiator fluid to enter the return line to the transmission. when radiator fluid enters the transmission the transmission is done. you need a replacement. these problem is happening to several hondas and nissan. the two car company's use the same manufacturing for the radiator. the company is dense. the failing on hondas and nissan. if you look into this matter you will see how many people are affected by this. i replaced two radiators for this truck so far. please look into this problem for $1400 so far. there is a defect with this radiator and honda refuse to do anything about it. people are spending thousands of dollars for something that could be fixed by honda and nissan. please issue a recall with this issue. thank you *tr

Simultaneous failure of left and right front wheel bearings at only 65,000 miles. further damage could led to catastrophic bearing failure and loss of vehicle control. repaired at honda dealership for $600 (bearings and alignment). *tr

2005 pilot honda transmission shudders between 30-40 mph. research on the web confirms that many people are having this problem - faulty torque converters. the problem began at 50k miles and now has 142k. just spent $750 to replace the pressure switches, will not fix the problem. *tr

Since purchasing my car ,a 2005 honda pilot, in 2007, i have experienced a shuttering that occurs at around 40 miles per hour. honda will not accept responsibility for the thousands of owners experiencing the same problem. the problem is coming from the torque converter/transmission, around a $3,000 to $5,000 to fix and honda is not accepting responsibility for it...please do not purchase a honda if your thinking about it...go toyota! at least toyota stands behind their mistakes! *tr

There is a shudder when the car is traveling between 30 and 45 mph. the shudder self corrects or will cease when the accelerator is depressed to withdrawn. *tr

I have a 2005 honda pilot that has been in the repair shop for the 5th transmission leak. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. the contact stated that the vehicle appeared to rock while in motion. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who originally stated that they were unable to diagnose the failure. however, the next day, the dealer inspected the vehicle again and stated that the transmission failed. the dealer rebuilt the transmission. after the transmission was replaced, the steering wheel began to shake and the vehicle veered to the right. the dealer stated that the vehicle needed a wheel alignment. the alignment was performed, but the vehicle continued to veer to the right. the current mileage is 52,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

Took my 2005 pilot in for major service 100k . vehicle has been maintained with regular intervals of fluid replacement and oil changes at non honda shops but with certified compatible products from valvoline. mileage on car is 107,928. picked up car was running great. within 7 miles flashing d light engine warning light stays on and car feels like its losing power and won't shift. dealer says its coincidence. no slowing of transmission no warning when dealer did major service and all point inspection with honda diagnostic computer. contacted dealer was told car should be drivable to bring it in. car stalled out jerked back and rpms soared almost causing me to get rear ended while traveling at 35 miles an hour. drove car 20 miles an hour and jerked back again causing me to be stuck in the middle of an intersection. pulled over turned car off and back on only engine silhouette still on and drove 20 mph to dealership. car in dealership mileage is 107953 and am told its a complete transmission failure on a sealed transmission that dealer couldn't detect three days earlier. no warning system or failed warning system on a very dangerous major car failure. i was also told that it was an emissions problem even car has been though my car passed smog in may 2012 with above average rating. my point is why is there no warning or detection to this potentially life threatening car failure????? *tr

At speeds up to approximately 35 mph, the car randomly has a shudder or vibration. it is not felt in the steering but in the body of the car. when accelerator is pushed harder or if the gear selector is moved to d3 the shudder stops. this occurred from 60k mile when purchased to now at 170k miles. dealer can't identify the problem but recommends a new torque converter. honda america will not do anything because of the age. i've seen numerous complaints with the same symptoms. honda is ignoring that this problem exists. it point to transmission issues. tires have been replaced, rotated, rebalanced, realigned and it had no effect on the problem.
