We have classified the 12 complaints from 2008 Honda Odyssey about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
Sliding door on drivers side started to become hard to open without resistance. eventually didn't open more than half way. it became so hard to close that it needed to be pushed after the initial closing. before it was taken in for repairs the door completely fell of the track along the side and top of the door track. it was hanging on by the bottom track alone. it appears the rollers for the track have broken completely and are no longer attached.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. while driving various speeds in the rain, water leaked through the roof and dripped onto the a-post, front driver's side air bag, and electrical components. the failure caused the electrical system to shut down, and the power doors and windows did not work. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 131,000.
For some reason my particular van is not included in at least 2 recalls where other same year odysseys are included. these all have the same engine, transmission and fuel system. my van was diagnosed by a mechanic as having a fuel pump module leak, which is recalled for some 2008 odussseys, but curiously not for mine. the same situation exists for the tailgate stay gas leakage, again, also recalled on some 2008 odysseys but not all.
The automatic sliding door on the drivers side, when opened, became detached from the rails both top & bottom falling completely off, hanging only by the cable. badly scrapping the side of the van the entire length of the door. apparently honda has been aware of this design defect for many years, but unlike toyota who had similar problems, honda has not yet issued a recall. aside from the obvious malfunctioning of the door this could have caused serious if not fatal injuries to a small child. the open button on the dashboard panel was hit while the vehicle was parked in a driveway(not running). the door made a grinding sound, opened, fell off it's tracks and continued to open scraping all the way down the side of the van and hanging by only the cable when it stopped. from looking on the internet & from talking to a honda service rep, this seems to be a fairly common problem which honda has chosen to ignore. the service persons' only comment was that my vehicle is out of warranty. i would like to know what honda plans to do about this known defect. are they waiting for someone to be seriously injured or worse? wouldn't it make sense to do a recall and fix the problem before a major injury and large lawsuit?
While stationary in a parking lot, while opening the passenger side sliding door the entire door jumped out of the channel, almost falling on top of myself and others and damaging the side of the car and rendering the door useless. the bearings for the door appear to be factory originals and are made of a cheap plastic that has broken. this appears to be dangerous and common for odyssees. i have never had a car ever have a door jump out of a track like this and i have had astro vans since the 1980s, and still currently own a 2002 that has never had such an issue. sliding doors should not be able to spring out of tracks this way or use such easily broken, unreliable parts.
While vehicle was stationary, the manual rear tailgate gas-charged lift struts/stays failed without warning, causing the rear tailgate to fall on the occupant with significant weight and velocity, causing minor head injuries. the vehicle had been inspected roughly 2 weeks prior and no signs of imminent failure were detected. no safety mechanism exists to prevent the tailgate from falling in the event of lift support failure.
Passenger side sliding door jumped track and broke off during normal operations. vehicle was parked, and passengers had exited.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the front driver's door failed to open. the contact rolled the window down and attempted to open the door from the outside handle while within the vehicle, but the door still failed to open. the contact had to use the front passenger door to exit and enter the vehicle. the contact also stated that the lock would turn when the key was inserted into the door, but the door would not open. the contact attempted to remove the driver's side interior door panel, but was unsuccessful. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (pearson honda, 14001 hull street rd, midlothian, va, 23112), but they were unable to remove the panel and asked for permission to possibly damage the panel, but at the expense of the contact. the contact did not authorize the repair. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
2008 honda odyssey ex-l without power lift gate. the rear hatch struts part # 74820shja01 failed in a dangerous way. they were working perfect the time before with now signs of any leaking or weakness and the very next time they failed causing the rear door to slam down in an uncontrolled manner. i checked the vin for the recall nhtsa campaign id number 12v062000 nhtsa action number pe11034 date feb 16, 2012 structure: body: hatchback/liftgate: hinge and attachments but state my vin is not part of the recall, but i find it strange that the failure acted in the same manner as the recall. vehicle was stationary.
My driver side sliding door fell off. it was on one minute and then the next it completely fell off. we were in a parking lot and i went to open the door. i pulled on it and it just popped right off. as a result it scratched up the side of my car very badly.
I had just taken my children to a water park. upon returning to my vehicle at the park's closing, i opened the driver's side passenger sliding door with no problem. when i tried to close it, it would not close completely, and when i gave it another hard pull, it came completely off. the center side roller had come completely off track. i was able to hold the door up with some difficulty, but was unable to get the side roller back in track. thankfully, i was able to remove the side roller apparatus from the door, get the upper roller somewhat back on track, and get the door closed. otherwise, we would have been stranded. as heavy as that door was, it could have really hurt my child if it had fallen inward on her, and i was very fortunate that it did not hurt me. vehicle was obviously stationary in a parking lot when this occurred.
After driving home in a heavy rain storm found large chunks of paint missing from the hood and roof of the vehicle. took to a paint shop who said it is paint failure. can see paint bubbling up next to the peeled areas.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. while attempting to use the liftgate, it failed to stay up and struck the contact in the back. the contact was not injured. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v062000 (structure). the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 101,000.
The back hatch door won't stay open hydraulic system failed and gate fell on head and shoulders hard
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear liftgate closed independently and failed to remain open without warning. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 72,000.
The tailgate struts on my 2008 honda odyssey failed on 3/7/2016. when i open the liftgate on our van now, the struts that cause the liftgate to open easily are not working. this means you have to raise the tailgate manually and use a stick of some kind to keep the tailgate open. i found that a recall was issued around 2012 for liftgate problems on the 2008-2009 honda odyssey. the information i found said that the nhtsa campaign for this recall has the id: #12v062000 my odyssey's vin number does not appear to be included in that recall. since i am affected by the same problem identified in the recall, i'd like for the recall to be expanded to include my vin so we can be reimbursed for the repair. the vin for my 2008 honda odyssey is: [xxx] here is the website where i found out about the recall: http://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1073272_2008-2009-honda-odyssey-recalled-for-liftgate-problem information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
The power lift gate struts (?) stopped working causing the lift gate to collapse on my head causing a small cut. after they stopped working, the lift gate would not power lift or stay open unless you manually held it open. my 2005 odyssey had the same problem and it was fixed with a recall.
Rear door's struts does not work. the hatchback rear door slams shut and does not hold. there was a recall regarding strut defect in 2012. the recalled odysseys were manufactured in alabama factory where our car was manufactured. just wonder why our vehicle is not on the recall list. thank you for your time. structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:hinge and attachments recall for 2008 honda odyssey recall announced february 16 2012 nhtsa reference #12v062000 number affected 45,747 summary: honda is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 odyssey vehicles, the gas-filled struts that help to raise and support the liftgate of vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system may be prone to early life failures due to a manufacturing flaw. the flaw can result in a leak of the pressurized gas, leading to reduced strut performance. consequence: struts with diminished performance can lead to unexpected closure, increasing the risk of personal injury. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the driver and passenger side sliding doors would not open manually nor automatically. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 134,000.
The car has large chunks of paint peeling from the roof and tailgate.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear door collapsed and slammed shut. the shocks on the hatch failed to keep the hatch door up. the dealer stated that the shocks needed to be replaced and informed the contact this was not normal. the failure mileage was 70,000.
We own a 2008 honda odyssey ex that should have been included in the recall for this safety issue, as it has been discovered that the power lift gate can fail as the struts are leaking pressurized gas. the reason the recall come to our attention in the first place is because the power lift gate on our vehicle has failed and has injured an employee. upon our own research, we entered our vin number into your database to check for any recall notifications, and the website stated our vin number was invalid. however, when searching on your website for recalls for the 2008 honda odyssey, it is clear that a recall has been issued on 2/16/2012 with a nhtsa recall number of 12v-062. we then contacted the where we had purchased our vehicle. they denied any recall for the power lift gate issue and failed to help us resolve this major safety issue. *tr
Liftgate struts failed, without warning, liftgate fell on my head as i reached in to grab personal items, causing headache. my 5 year old daughter was standing next to me, if my head would not have stopped the liftgate i cant imagine how seriously she would have been injured. there is a recall for this on the touring model, but not the ex-l however there are numerous complaints about this part failing prematurely, as early as 20,000 miles on ex-l models. recall should be expanded to include ex-l. *tr
Wife's van factory paint is peeling off in large chunks. dealership blows it off saying normal wear and tear. that's ridiculous! i have never seen such a thing.
The two struts just suddenly cannot hold the liftgate which it almost hit my wife and kids' head. should honda notice these struts failure? known many other people have same problem on 2008 odyssey ex/exl models. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. while driving at approximately 60 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle started to vibrate. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the ignition coil and spark plugs were replaced but the failure recurred within 73 miles. the vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic where the front cylinder head, the head gasket, water pump, and spark plugs were replaced. the contact also stated that the lift gate on the rear of the vehicle was opened, but failed to remain open. the failure recurred multiple times. the vin was not includedin nhtsa campaign number: 12v060000 (structure). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 89,000. updated 01/21/16*lj *cn
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. while attempting to open the liftgate, the door inadvertently closed and knocked the contact to the ground. there were no injuries. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v062000 (structure). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unavailable.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the hinges failed causing the lift gate to close unexpectedly. as a result, the lift gate failed to remain open and fell on the contact's head and neck. the contact stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v062000 (structure). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 45,000. updated 9/4/14*cn
Rollers on sliding door will not close the door. one roller popped out of door and looked damaged. it makes a grinding noise when trying to move. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the lift gate failed to stay open. the manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 12v062000 (structure). the approximate failure mileage was 63,000.
Rear gate supports completely failed. i was vacuuming the back interior of the van at the time. rear gate collapsed on my back, injuring my back. no medical attention was required. *tr
The tailgate struts broke while the tailgate was open, striking me in my back. i noticed there was a recall for the 2008 honda odyssey, but mine is not included and i was given no valid reason as to why, only that it was specific vin's and mine was not in the bunch that was recalled. *tr
The lift gate struts that support the rear door failed with out any indication they were getting weak. they were working fine earlier in the day. but when i tried to open the hatch in the evening it was very heavy an would not stay open, until i supported it with a make shift pole. i replaced the struts with an after market version, but wonder if other owners have had similar failures, especially when the hatch was open. *tr
The paint has been peeling and flaking for years now and it got worse now. the clear coat is no longer there. there's a recall for the blue color, but not the others. i do not understand there. paint is paint. color is different only when the color pigment is added. is there a recall for blue, it should be a recall for all others. i believe the color (white) of my vehicle is defective period and i would like to see a recall for it. thanks.
The liftgate struts failed suddenly and no longer support the heavy door. there was no gradual deterioration. ours is a manual version - not powered and for some reason isn't covered by the recall 12v062000, even though it uses the same part that was determined to be defective in that investigation - nhtsa action number : pe11034. it was determined that it failed at unacceptable rate and the number of complaints from manual liftgates is higher than those of the powered liftgates. this is at least as dangerous as a powered liftgate situation, especially for my wife and 3 young children. the investigation and recall needs to be expanded to cover all models using this part, not just the powered doors. *tr
I tried to open the rear hatch door to put something in. the door was extremely heavy and would not stay up and open. i was able to get out of the way before it crashed down on me. i was not hurt, but i could have been. now i am unable to access back portion of vehicle. i don't have a place to put groceries or when we travel, i have no place to put luggage. the hydraulic failed. why was there not a recall on my model, when there has been a recall on other models of same year? *tr
Re: tailgate/ strut failure i was out shopping and at my last stop the tailgate was suddenly very hard to open. i had a large cart of groceries and it was raining, so i raised it up with one hand, but when i turned to get more groceries, i expected it to stay and it dropped down. fortunately, i did not have my children with me, so i could put the rest of the groceries in the seat area and deal with it later. it has not resolved, so it was not a "rain" issue. in the week that has passed, i have done some of research. i found that honda did indeed have a recall on this problem http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/ucm416791/rcak-12v062-3793.pdf however, when i called my honda dealer, *my* vehicle is not included in this recall. i'm having a hard time figuring out which models are by the official notices. they quoted me $276 to fix it. i have discovered this is very easy to fix - $50 for the struts, a flathead screwdriver, and ladder to prop open the tailgate and even a 115 lb woman can fix them. however, why aren't all 2008 honda odysseys in this recall? had my children been helping me or had i been half in the van when the struts suddenly failed, any of us could have been badly injured or killed by the dead weight of that door. for now i will order the struts and fix them as soon as i can since i really don't have time to duke it out with honda. *tr
Me and my 3 children pulled into my driveway. as my 6 year old daughter got out of the van (like every other day) she went to pull close the drivers side back sliding door. without any warning, the door fell off. completely off!! thank god she was not smashed by the door, because i learned after, it is not light! when i called the dealership, they suggested i drive it up to get looked at!!! drive, without a door and 3 kids!? no way!! also, their response when i told them the door fell off (i was shocked) was "oh yea, that happens sometimes with minivans"! if i knew that, i wouldn't have gotten one! how is that safe at all?!? and they estimated around $400 to fix it!! after calling my step dad over, we figured out what part was needed and got the piece ourselves. it worked for a while and about 6 months later, both sliding doors now won't latch all the way. one of two of the latches (both the back ones) won't latch. one my dashboard, it constantly shows both doors are open. i have to keep the light switched to "off" instead of "door", otherwise, the lights stay on and battery dies. this is very inconvenient and as i am a single mother of 3, i do not have much time nor money to get this issue fixed right away!
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear lift gate door would independently open. the contact would experience difficulty in manually closing the lift gate door. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who diagnosed that the rear struts needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number:12v062000 (structure) due to the authorized dealer stating that the failure was only associated with the power lift gate models. the contacts stated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure as the power lift gate and on numerous occasions. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 92500. .. updated 06/03/14 *bf updated 06/13/2014 *js
The trunk lift (from an open position) of our 2008 honda odyssey ex-l unexpectedly fell on top of my wife's head while she was using the trunk area. her injury was not serious, and consequently we determined the failure was the gas struts that assist in opening and closing the hatch. honda already has a recall for the same issue for powered liftgate for 2008-9 models, but it doesn't include manual opening odysseys, claiming that a degraded strut in a manual liftgate will be noticeable. this was not the case for us. considering odysseys are built for families, i feel this is a major safety issue since my older children frequently operate the tailgates without our help. since the reason for the liftgate failure is the same for manual and powered liftgates, honda should extend the recall (or at least a notification) to all 2008-9 odyssey owners. just because we didn't purchase the top of the line odyssey, our safety shouldn't be any less than the touring owners. *tr
Starting in the spring of 2014, the paint started coming off on the driver side and now the entire front of the roof is coming off. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear hatch would close independently. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number 12v062000(structure) but was advised that the vin was not included in the recall campaign. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 76,116.
I opened the rear lift gate of the van. the struts that hold the gate open failed and hit my son in the head. my van has a manual lift gate and does not appear to have been included in the recall of 2008 vans with automatic lifts where the gas was leaking out of the struts and causing a similar failure. i request the nhtsa investigate the failure of the manual lift gate and require honda to fix this equipment failure. i feel this should not have failed in a vehicle only 6 years old. i have another van (mercury villager) that is almost 18 years old and the lift gate still operates as new. this is a safety hazard and could cause seriously injury or death. thank you. *tr
2008 honda odyssey exl hatchback lift gate struts gave out and fell on my head while loading groceries. the hatchback will open and close but the struts do not work. it fell with no warning of an issue. it can be very dangerous if one if not paying attention. especially if children are near. *tr
Issue is the same as with recall notice 12v062000. the gas filled struts are not holding the lift gate open. issue became more noticeable when weather was cold. recall should not be limited to power lift models as the same struts are used for other models. i read many complaints regarding this issue when i researched online. my model is the lx. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the automatic liftgate was opened however, it independently and abruptly closed. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 12v062000 sructure:body:hatchback/liftgate). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 35,000.
The liftgate/tailgate on the honda odyssey 2008 exl does not stay up. it falls down due to the weight of the liftgate and has the potential to injure the person using it. this is a non powered liftgate. honda did have a recall on the powered liftgates for the 2008 exl, but not for the non powered ones. *tr
Tailgate struts fail to hold up the tailgate - 2008 honda odyssey ex. door is very heavy, very hard to lift up and could easily hit your head/body if not manually holding up carefully. *jb
The rear door no longer stays open. it falls right away and has fell on my head as well as my wife's head. it appears that there is already a recall but seems like it only applies to the vans that have the power door in the rear. *tr
The liftgate stoped working. *js
