BODY 55

Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2007 Honda Odyssey

Paint peeling off hood and roof of van

Passenger side rear sliding door fell off when it was opened. roller assembly had broken, cables were still attached. *tr

My daugher and i heard a clicking noise coming from the back of my van and opened up my tailgate to see where the noise was coming from. the tailgate was working but a clicking noise was coming from the strut on the left. both my six year old and i were under the tailgate at the time trying to figure out where the clicking noise was coming from. ten minutes later the strut failed. it would no longer stay open at all and slammed down instead of staying open. had my daughter and/or i had been under it at the time of failure, we would have been seriously injured. this is a very unsafe situation for a family vehicle. it is common for both of my children and i to unpack items from the van and it sickens me that this problem has happened before on honda oddessey vans! *tr

The tail gate lift was working fine one day and on the next day the tail gate hit my wife in the head. this is very dangerous as this happened with no warning. honda must fix this matter because this is very dangerous. *tr

Yesterday my three year old had 3 of his teeth nearly ripped out of his head by an integrated sunshade in the sliding door of my 2007 honda odyssey. by nearly ripped out i mean they got caught in the thing when the door was opening...the door didn't stop opening and it caused his teeth to stick straight out of his mouth (moved almost 90 degrees upward). the window was completely up and the windows are tinted in the rear of the odyssey's so i couldn't see him holding (and apparently biting) the sunshade while approaching the rear passenger sliding door. i would not have opened the door knowing it was in his mouth. i applied pressure and got his teeth to go back in place and took him to the dentist. we are on a wait-and-see scenario with whether or not my child will lose his teeth. i inquired, with honda vehicles, if there was any sort of lock for this sunshade and why there isn't a sensor to indicate something is tugging on the doors. he told me there is no product that can lock the sunshade in the retracted position to prevent injuries, didn't comment on the sensors, and told me to move my child to the back seat of the van. *tr

Both my power sliding doors are starting to fail. there seem to be numerous complaints about rear power door issues on the odysseys. our driver side rear power door does not lock or unlock properly unless done manually and it will not open with the remote or the button on the dashboard. the passenger side doors makes a loud popping noise when it opens and also make a noise after its closed as if the door hadn't latched properly. have not had any broken or fallen doors yet. this seems to be an endemic issue rather than a few problems here and there. this is also an issue with safety more than anything else hence requiring immediate attention from honda what will happen if i have to rush my three small children out of the car in an emergency and am not able to open either doors or as it has happened to other parents my door falls while driving?????? this is a part of the car that should not fail after any year of service and sensible use, however is happening to new as well as older models. and why are we continuously being stuck with the bill (upwards of $500.00) for honda's failure to produce quality doors and door assemblies for one of the most critical part of a car. i would like to know from you government what are you doing about this. we do not need another toyota situation, where we had to see people perishing before you guys did anything about it!!!!!! *tr

We have a 2007 honda odyssey that suddenly started to have the paint bubble up and begin peeling. it started off in two small areas on the hood and the roof and has grown tremendously in the past six months. it looks awful. *tr

The lift gate gas filled struts on our 2007 honda odyssey have failed. the lift gate will not stay open to pack the van for trips and requires some sort of prop to stay open. the gate has fallen twice off the prop and hit me, not seriously, but it hurt. it's heavy. i see that later models have a recall associated with similar problems but the 2007 does not as of yet. (nhtsa campaign #12v062000, action # pe11034). *tr

Sliding doors keep failing even after several replacements by honda. doors do not remain closed even when locked. rear section of sliding door remains ajar. a side impact or side swipe crash could easily tear open the doors. side airbag deployment could also cause injury if tripped by the failing doors. as i said this is an ongoing re-occurrence even after honda repair. i know of several other odyssey owners dealing with the same issue. honda dealer admits they see many of these in 2007-2008 odysseys'. *tr

Tailgate struts stopped working. tailgate will not stay in upright position. there is a recall on the 2008-2009 models with power tailgate lift (nhtsa action number pe11034) but not on 2007 models with manual lift. *tr

My wife had mentioned she had been experiencing some problems with the hatch on her honda. yesterday she said it was slow to open; today she said it would not open at all. i went out to look at the hatch and try to determine if she had a blown fuse, etc. i pushed the button on the remote and the tailgate opened, contrary to what she had told me. it seemed to open slower than normal. i went to see if anything was attached to the hatch that would slow down its opening. it was raining, so i stepped under the hatch. without warning it came down on me. the interior of the hatch hit me on the head, knocked me forward then hit me in the back of my legs, causing pain to both my shins and calves where i was struck by the hatch and rear bumper. i already have some issues with a stained neck due to military related service. when the hatch hit me on the head i felt a sudden jolt of pain in my arm and shoulder, like a huge electric shock. now my neck is very sore/stiff. i have had many other cars with rear hatches. the hatch struts would slowly lose their effectiveness, and would give you some sort of warning that they were going to be in need of repair. these hatches would become less effective in the winter, during cold weather. this is not the case with our odyssey. it happened suddenly; one day it was fine, the next day it was smacking me in the head. something is wrong with the design of these things. i'm going to contact honda of america and let them know that they have a serious safety flaw in that these things could suddenly fail so rapidly. i'm a strong, healthy man. i work as firefighter in a big city, so this kind of trauma is not a huge deal to me. i shudder to think what would have happened if a smaller person was struck by this hatch. *tr

Truck tailgate holder failed and hit driver on the back. it slammed closed and would not stay open. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey. the contact attempted to open the rear lift gate and noticed that it had become extremely heavy and would not remain open. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 12v062000 (structure: body: hatchback/liftgate: support device) but the recall only covered the 2008-2009 honda odyssey vehicles and not the 2007 models. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 106,000.

The rear tailgate struts on my honda odyssey van failed once i opened it. the heavy tailgate began to close on me while i was under it and had i not noticed it coming down it would have crushed me. i'm elderly and struggled with the weight of the tailgate as i caught it. the passenger-side strut completely failed, leaking some kind of fluid out of it and the driver-side strut is also leaking. these leaks and failures were sudden as i had recently washed the van a day before and did not find any leaks when i cleaned the tailgate. *js

Left side (driver side) power door stopped working. door can't be opened either under power or manually. *tr

The rear power liftgate cannot stay in open position. power liftgate would open and then slam shut occasionally. struts cannot support weight of rear liftgate. *js

On 1/23/12 while attempting to close drivers side power sliding door with remote, it was noted that while attempting to close, said door closed about half-way and then reopened. several attempts were made to close above door until it finally did close. it was also noted at this time that when it did close it made a thumping noise. "thump... thump... thump..." while the door was closing. it should be stated that this problem has continued to happen several times this past week, however not all the time. the thumping noise was noted all the time though, only upon closing. annoying, but not terrible. tonight, 2/1/12, however is a different story. i opened the above door using the exterior door handle, the door began to open. when it (sliding door) was just about completely open (more than 3/4 open but not fully), my six year-old son attempted to climb into the van (something he has done before without there ever being a problem) when the door began to close on its own! thankfully, i was standing right there and i was able to pull him out of harms way and stop the door from closing on him. the door then opened, when i physically stopped it from closing on my son, and then began to close again and then open, to where it stayed. it was then that i turned off the power slider and closed the door manually. i realize nowhere on this form does it ask for potential injuries, however this could have been devastating. a necessary component (a door) that one believes to be safe is not only unreliable but hazardous. *tr

Honda odyssey 2007 liftgate non-powered lift struts failed instantaneously. this caused the heavy liftgate to no longer stay on the open/up position. honda (under extended warranty plan) replaced both struts. within several months, struts again failed and were replaced by honda. on 11/3/2013 this struts again failed instantaneously (used without problems around 2pm), failed at 4:30pm. this is less than two years since last replacement for a major functionally necessary component of the mini-van. honda was contacted and claims there are no known defects with the struts and that they are "far" outside the replacement warranty window of 12 months. it would same honda uses defective or inferior parts for these struts. honda support rep. told me that if i felt the struts were not high quality and effective in holding the liftgate up i should look for 3rd party manufactured struts that filled my needs better. very surprised by this response that honda would tell me to get "better" parts outside if their own liftgate struts are not up to the job they are designed to do for years without failure. *tr

The tailgate of my van, didn't stay open. as soon as i leave my hand from it, instead of staying open, it just came down and closed. i was nearly hurt..... i talked to american honda, and they didn't think this is worthy of recall. even though, 2008 honda odyssey has a similar defect and they have issued recall. but not for 2007 model. *tr

Rear liftgate struts on 2007 honda odyssey experienced sudden failure causing the rear liftgate to suddenly close on me when standing under it. struts are manufactured by stabilus part # 6826ur 0810n 334/06 c7. the part number is 74820-shj-a012. there was a previous safety recall for the 2005 honda odyssey for this same issue. the nhtsa action number ea08015. there is no recall notice for the 2007 sudden strut failure. *tr

When i open the liftgate it does not hold up. the tailgate gas strut has failed i only have 33,000 miles on it. *tr

The power liftgate on my 2007 honda odyssey touring minivan started opening partially, and within three days the liftgate would not hold door open. power struts failed and hit my son and daughter in back as they were climbing into van. no recalls on file for my year model, but have seen several other complaints for the same problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear passenger side sliding door closed on a child, causing bruises to the childs right hand. the contact stated that the door should have retracted when it sensed an obstruction but it did not. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a complaint was filed. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

Our 2007 honda odyssey was working perfectly until yesterday when the hatch shut on me. it knocked me out for a minute. i don't know what happened that it just stopped working but it just missed our new puppy who was in my arms at the time. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey touring. the contact stated the rear hatch on the vehicle slammed shut while it was in the upright position. when it closed, it damaged the bottom of the hatch. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the vehicle and stated the struts had failed. there were no recalls and she will be responsible for the repairs. the manufacturer was contacted and informed her that there were no related recalls and to take the vehicle to the dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 38,000.

I cut and pasted part of another complaint as this complaint perfectly explains my complaint. "the right rear passenger intermittently fails to open or close. this occurs when using the remote, driver buttons, or the door handles (interior & exterior). it appears to jump off the track. we have had it looked at by a honda" 5 times. i bought it used from the dealership and it was a certified, pre owned honda. the 4th time i took it in they replaced the replaced the harness and pinch center in may 8, 2012. they said the middle roller was broken as well and that was replaced in february 2012. but i am still having trouble. this morning when i brought it in to look at it, the door made the loud popping sound it sometimes makes after i have tried to open it for a long time without success. the technician saw it but like all of them, he just looked dumbfounded and did not appear to know what to do. i mentioned others have complained about the doors on this site and they did not seem to care. the most aggravating thing is that when i bring it in to the shop to be seen, the door always works for the honda guys so it looks like i am crazy. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey. the contact stated the lift gate strut fractured. the dealer advised the contact that her vin was not included in recall number: 10v055000, structure body hatchback/liftgate. the manufacturer was aware of the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were 43,000. the vin was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while opening the rear liftgate, the hydraulic system on the gate failed. the contact had to then manually open the rear lift gate. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was in the process of being repaired. the failure and current mileages were 75,000. the vin was unavailable. updated 09/02/11*lj updated 10/31/11

Drivers side rear sliding door fell off when it was opened. cables were still attached. roller assembly had broken. *tr

While traveling on the highway, a rock hit my a/c condenser. a replacement condenser costs $700-1,000. please ask honda to invent some sort of condenser guard to protect it from road debris. my father had same problem with his 2006 honda odyssey. *tr

Honda odyssey 2007 tail gate strut problem. it has been observed over the net that the honda odyssey tail gate gas lift dies after about 32,000 to 39,000 miles. our died at 42,000 miles. can you please keep record for this complaint and see if this helps to make sure that manufacture can provide some better parts. thanks!!! *tr

The stabilus stay assemble tailgate open num 74820-sju-a012 failed and let the tailgate door fall. it almost hit me on the head. since then it fails to hold the tailgate door open on the honda odyssey ex-l .2007. *tr

Our 2007 honda odyssey liftgate gas struts both failed with no warning on march 1, 2011. this is very dangerous because it slammed down and could have hurt someone. seems this is a common occurrence with odysseys made in the last 10 years. i have had other vehicles with liftgates and none have failed. honda should fix this as a safety issue before someone gets hurt. *tr

I received a recall notice relating to faulty vsa system in honda odysseys. my vehicle was totalled as a result of a single driver accident that occured on ct-15 merrit parkway in january 2011. it snowed that day in connecticut although there was no visible snow on the highway when this happened and at a particular turn, the vehicle skidded (no break was applied), and after trying to control through turning the steering hit the road divider barricades facing forward and then sideways resulting into damage to radiator system and activating all air bags. i spoke with honda representative today who advises that they cannot assist me further because vehicle is not available for inspection and they cannot therefore confirm or deny whether the issue was caused due to this matter. my request to speak to the supervisor was declined. i do not feel that my concerns were adequately addressed. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear hinge door struts fractured, causing the door to slam shut. the contact mentioned that the door impacted her on the top of her head. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 103,000.

Paint chipped on the outside the size of a dinner plate on the roof above the windshield. no reason. *tr

The right rear passenger intermittenly fails to open or close. this occurs when using the remote, driver buttons, or the door handles (interior & exterior). it appears to jump off the track. we have had it looked at by a honda dealer no less than 3 times. i know of two other people who have the same problem with their 2007 odyssey. *tt

Paint on the roof peeling on top. can see metal now and started as bubble. worried about rusting. contacted dealer they are doing nothing. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear strut support for the rear hatchback failed without warning. the dealer was contacted and both rear strut supports were replaced. the contact did not inform the manufacturer of the failure. the current mileage was approximately 48,500 and the failure mileage was approximately 47,500.

When i turn or go straight, with and without brakes on, at a slow speed, i hear a loud horn-like sound. seems to be coming from front. i only have about 21,000 miles and bought it new. this problem has been happening most of the time we've owned it (almost 3 years). dealer can't make the problem happen. i even left it overnight. it usually happens when i leave home. i make short trips to school and store. it is sporadic. i heard another odyssey with the same noise pulling into a parking spot the other day. is this common? it is annoying and embarrassing. it can be quite loud. since i've had the recall done, it's not as frequent. *tr

2007 honda odyssey van. we noticed two small stains on the carpet in the rear storage area, where the 3rd row seats can be stored. we tried to clean the carpet with resolve, but that made the stains bigger. when we vacuumed the carpet, we found an oily residue with the consistency of lithium grease in the vacuum attachment. we removed the rear seats and folded the carpeting back. there's a gray panel of soundproofing or something else at the bottom of the cargo area, and that panel is disintegrating, leaving behind a tarry residue. the tarry residue is what reached up through the carpet to cause the stain. i don't know why the panel itself is disintegrating. we purchased the car used from a dealer in april 2010, and first noticed the problem in july 2010. *tr

I have a 2007 ex with 13,000 miles and both of the tailgate (hatch) struts just failed suddently on 08/15/2010. there should be some additional safety mechanism on these so that they just don't collapse and cause harm (the hatch almost slam my 7-years old son on the head). both can not go bad at one time and either one should support some weight. it is quite dangerous. these liftgate struts should be recalled before bad things happen. honda should stand behind what they put in these cars. *tr

Rear liftgate struts on 2007 honda odyssey experienced sudden failure causing the rear liftgate to suddenly close on person standing beneath. saturday 08/07 liftgate was functioning properly, lifted and closed no issues. sunday 08/08 opened the liftgate and proceeded underneath as the liftgate came crashing down. no longer has strut assist to open or support liftgate in open position. struts are manufactured by stabilus part # 6826ur 0810n 251/06 a5 also has this number 74820-shj-a012. there is a safety recall for this exact issue in the 2005 honda odyssey nhtsa action number ea08015. contacted dealer and scheduled an appointment to fix - at my own expense - as there is no recall notice for the 2007 sudden strut failure. *tr

In 2010 i had to have 3 out of the 4 motor mounts replaced on my engine and then last week i was told that i need to replace 2 of the motor mounts. i was told by the honda service center this is not a normal wear and tear item and that i should not have had to have them replaced again 4 years later. i've also seen multiple complaints about various models of honda odysseys with the same problem. your engine shakes terribly at start and while idling and has a hard kick when you start to go from braking and idling and jerks forward which i can only attribute to this problem. it caused me to brake because i thought my engine had fallen out of my vehicle or was about to and in stop and go traffic on the highway this can be quite dangerous. i believe this is a known problem by honda as i've seen it mentioned on numerous websites and i have notified honda myself just recently. i would hope they would look into this. i am not able to get this fixed as it costs nearly 1200$ every time this occurs. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the struts that hold the rear lift gate hatch failed and the lift gate would no longer hold in the upright position. the dealer was not contacted and the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the failure and current mileages were 37,105.

Rear tailgate struts fail on 2007 honda odyssey, causing tailgate to suddenly crash down. children were in the vicinity and could have been killed. i took the car to a honda dealer, and the dealer said it is a common problem. there are also many instances of this problem mentioned on various internet sites. the 2005 odyssey has been recalled for a similar problem. if someone has not been killed already, someone will be killed if this issue is not soon addressed on a large scale. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while the children were getting out of the sliding door on the right passenger side, the door stopped midway. the contact stated that now the door would not open at all. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were approximately 59,000.

The tailgate failed to stay open all the sudden, a direct hit on the driver with minor body injury. it had been working before and failed without any sign. *tr

While driving in heavy raining conditions or flow of water pool, on roadway or hwy, vehicle wants to shut off displaying no charging, like i have no power for a few seconds. twice this occurred on hwy speed 70+ or 25-30 +, on roadway with heavy rain and flow of water pool splash during turn vehicle shut off and power up within approximately 3-5 seconds. i was able to move over to the off road medium and regain engine power. this has happen numerous times in the course of 2 yrs. bringing vehicle to honda dealership which they cant repeat complaint even with hosing engine belt with water, though the tech stated many customers have reported this during raining conditions. note no power steering due to this event. ret nypd *tr

Both rear tailgate struts had leaked fluid, causing automatic tailgate to open but then slam shut rather than stay open. service advisor explained that the problem only became evident after both of the struts had failed but, until then, one functioning strut may have been concealing the failure of the other. problem manifested at 16,000 miles, and was less than two weeks out of warranty, but dealership charged me to replace the failed hatch struts. *tr
