Recently reported STEERING problems on 2006 Honda Odyssey

Power steering is making noise but have power steering fluid

High pressure hoses

Engine leaking oil and smoke appears when the van is on seats feel loose

Upon acceleration of the vehicle on all roads there is an uncontrollable shaking. from a complete stop or from driving and trying to accelerate,

When starting or parking car p/s does not work. also loud grinding noise when turning. had pressure hose changed. situation getting worse and is becoming dangerous. from mu mechanic and the internet learned that honda had silent recall but was never notified and that recall was up to 100k. this is a saftey issue and a mandatory recall should be launched. this seems to be a common problem from what i have been reading. this has been going on for some time.

Vehicle steering is stiff on slow turns and parking. steering column vibrates at a high rate of speed. tie rods have been replaced. new tires, rotors and brake pads have also been replaced. high pitched sound also comes from steering column while idling in stationary position. moisture appears around o-ring leading into the steering fluid pump. regular maintenance has already been performed since purchase (new in april 2006). the steering issue concerns me as the 'symptoms' come and go. i've talked with others who have same model/year and they experience same problem. honda owes it to their customers to issue a recall on this 2006 honda odyssey power steering problem. it's a costly repair that seems to be prevalent in quite a few 2006 odyssey's. service records for this vehicle are in owners possession.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. while driving at low speeds, the power steering failed without warning and was unable to turn. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 51,000.

Power steering stiff at low speeds or parking and very loud howling noise, mechanic state there is a recall but i do not see any, almost had numerous accidents due to this issue of stiff steering and unable to turn

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle lost steering ability. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 58,000.

My van makes a very loud whining noise when in motion and turning the wheel

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. while driving approximately 5 mph, there was an abnormal rattling sound and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 103,000. updated 8/10/15*cn

The rear lower motor mounts wear out prematurely and cause unwanted vibrations and steering play. this is a known issue and has not been rectified. the dealership charges $800 to replace the defective parts.....updated 11/13/15 *bf updated 11/17/15.*jb

2066 honda odyssey and 2005 honda accord. consumer writes in regards to the power steering hose and the 2006 honda odyssey fuel pump cover recall notice and steering failure.. *smd the consumer did not understand why the same recall wasn't issued for his wife's vehicle, since the power steering pump failed and had to be replaced. also, the gps navigation unit wa replaced, because the screen went dead. *jb

Driving in a parking lot to find a parking space. environmentals: torrential downpour, but road and parking lot surface not flooded. attempting to make a left turn into a parking space, the power steering (assist) failed. could not turn steering wheel. stopped vehicle. turned off air conditioning. engaged foot brake. put vehicle in neutral. lifted foot off of brake pedal. waited approximately 1 minute. foot on brake. put vehicle in drive. air conditioning remained off. power steering assist had returned. able to park into parking space. see also: nhtsa id number: 10616212 nhtsa id number: 10592737 nhtsa id number: 10578624 nhtsa id number: 10036938 honda [xxx] honda [xxx] (was never notified by honda of this warranty extension-vehicle is now 8 years old). information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

While there is already a honda service bulletin issued concerning problem (bulletin #: 11-039). the response by honda is not adequate. the problem is that the steering wheel is hard to turn at low speeds (such as turning into and out of parking spots). although this defect with the power steering pump only occurs at low speeds it still a safety issue. the fact that is very hard to turn the steering wheel can reasonable lead to pedestrian accident such as pedestrian becoming pinned against a car. honda extended the warranty on this part to 7 years / 100,000 miles. i have under 80,000 miles on my car but honda claims i am a few months beyond the 7 year date. honda should be required to further extend this warranty as many people will not be able to afford this expensive repair and it could leave to injury to persons in parking lots. *tr

At low speeds the power steering is very tight and difficult to turn the wheel. example: parallel parking.

Power steering failed at car park, difficulty steering the van out of parking spot, power steering resumed while driving at low speed. problem recurred multiple time usually from starting the van and steering it out of parking spot. honda found the power steering pump to be faulty and replaced it with me footing the bill of $687.13,as the van was just out of the seven year extended warranty. similar problem was noted when the van was about 2 years old but honda couldn't replicate the problem at their center....they never made a note of this in their records! *tr

Appears that there is an o ring issue on this year honda odyssey. air is getting in the power steering pump/lines causing a whining during turns and acceleration. this is an issue that warrants a "tsb" to the mechanics and service industry, however, honda has yet to announce a recall or offer assistance in the matter. this is our second honda...we drove an accord to 246k miles and are big honda fans. hate that there is a known issue and no recall. *tr

Vehicle shudders while accelerating and worse with turning left onto freeway onramps etc. causes some difficulty steering and need to enter freeway at very slow speed disrupting traffic. *tr

Power steering still does not work at slow speeds. i had the fix done at the dealer back when honda offered to extend the warranty and fix the problem for those vehicles having issues (2012), but it is already doing the same thing again. now honda wants me to pay to replace the power steering pump. i have had nothing but trouble and noise out of the power steering in this vehicle since day 1 and i bought it brand new. honda power steering pumps must be defective for there to be so many people with trouble. *tr

Driving at 50 mph on a friday night. my van suddenly gave a loud explosive sound and the cabin filled up with smoke and i could not breathe or see properly. i wondered what was going on and quickly pulled up on the side of the road. it took me some time to get out of the van since i am disabled. my husband had to literally speaking, carry me out and sat me on the side of the road. passers by had already called 911 when they noticed what was going on. the police, ambulance and fire dept came. the fire dept determined that my van was smoking heavily and they took care of the fire in my engine when they opened the hood. the van was towed to the dealership and they informed me that my transmission was defective. the only problem was that this will then be the third transmission in a van that is less than 8 years old. i had a similar problem in july 2011 at 80,000 miles and the transmission was replaced then with promises from honda that i was good for another 5 years. so when this problem occurred exactly 2 years to the time that the second transmission was replaced, i reported the problem to honda and they want me to pay for a third transmission. this is despite the fact that i always serviced my van with the dealership. it has never been serviced with the local repair shop. i am still making car payments on my van and they want me to pay for a new transmission? i will appreciate an investigation on why honda is allowed to sell lemons to consumers even though they are aware of transmission problems on the odyssey vans. smoke and fire due to recurring transmission problems on the same van is a safety issue. i pray that no one will be killed or injured due to recurring transmission problems with honda odyssey vans. thanks in advance for your assistance in protecting and ensuring consumer safety as we drive our cars. *tr

Power steering groans loudly in weather below 70 degrees. the blogosphere is rife with reports of a faulty o-ring placement in these odyssey's that impacts that operation of the power steering. *tr

Driving on a major 4 lane highway @ approx. speed of 70. suddenly the steering went out of control. it was loose, but i was unable to control. the road was dry, temperature was about 70 degrees. fortunately,i was able to glide to a grassy median strip without hitting anybody,or have them hit me. the vehicle was towed to a local garage. they could find no problem. we contacted honda customer service, who told us to bring it to a dealer which we did. they had no findings. both of these places feel the vehicle is unsafe to drive, but told us to come and get it. we,needless to say, are very afraid to drive it. we have never had anything to complain about with this van. *tr

The power steering pump in our odyssey started making a loud squealing noise, and at some later time, the steering wheel began to vibrate. the steering pump noise was intermittent, and occurred at low and idle speeds only. there was never a loss of steering capability, but the shimmy in the steering wheel leads to driver discomfort and driver fatigue. honda has since replaced the power steering pump at a reduced cost to us, but the new pump has not solved the steering wheel shimmy. the shimmy is very similar to the effects of a bent wheel or a out of balance tire, but different wheels and different tires, in addition to multiple tire re-balances have failed to correct the problem. the steering shimmy occurs only at speeds above approximately 62 mph, and seems to occur after about 70 - 100 miles of driving. within this driving scenario, the shimmy can get very bad, and then at times completely disappear. but for most of the time, the shimmy is present. at speeds below 55 mph, the vehicle behaves very well. i'm not sure if this problem is unique to my vehicle, or if others have experienced the same issues. if it is generic to the vehicle design, then honda needs to provide odyssey owners with an economical solution. should the problem persist, i will have not choice but to sell the vehicle because, aside form the potential safety issues, it does not provide the driving comfort that we need. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. the contact stated while driving 5 mph, the contact lost control of the vehicle suddenly. the contact pulled over and inspected the vehicle and noticed that the inner and outer tie-rod connect had fractured. the contact had the vehicle towed home. the contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint. the contact did not take the vehicle to a mechanic or dealer. the failure mileage was 58,180. the vin was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. the contact stated that an abnormal noise was heard from the steering wheel when turning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who added power steering fluid to the vehicle but to no avail. the steering wheel continued to exhibit the noise when turning, which was similar to a motor sound. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 128,000.

Groaning sound from power steering system and steering wheel hard to turn at low speeds. took vehicle to honda dealer knowing other 2006 honda odysseys had power steering problems and that the warranty on just the power steering pump had been extended to 7 years and 100,000 miles. i hoped the issue was just the power steering pump and that the warranty would cover it. of course not! the problem is apparently in the steering rack and will require $1,200+ in repairs for a new one or the van will be a safety issue. i'm very suspicious that they have an extended warranty on the pump but not on the steering rack. since i don't want to lose steering while driving and cause an accident, i am forced to have this defective part repaired at my own cost. with only 55,000 miles on the van, this is not the kind of safety or quality i would have expected from honda. *tr

2006 honda odyssey. consumer states problem with rack and pinion leakage. *tgw the consumer stated he took the vehicle to have a recall rectified regarding the steering pump. however, as time went by, he began having problems with the steering while making turns. the consumer believed the leaking rack and pinion was related to the steering pump as they were integrated. *jb

Lack of power steering. we bought this van at the end of september, 2012. we noticed this issue within a few days of owning it. this continues to be an on-going issue and is happening at various speeds and at various times. not just in parking lots. this happens when slowing down to make turns in normal driving settings. it also happens when driving into round-abouts. this is a very serious safety issue! i tried to contact honda via email once we began to notice it and got no reply. i have looked at different complaint websites and see this a lot. recently, with the fuel pump recall, i called into honda directly regarding the fuel pump. during the call, i described this steering issue to the rep. she said honda knows of it and what they did was to extend the original warranty on the vehicles to 100,000 miles to repair it. however, it was not repaired in all vehicles. the issue is that periodically the power steering system stops working and you must manually turn the steering wheel. we have several children in our family. it is scary to know that the steering could cause a serious accident & cause serious injury or death. many highways now have round-abouts at the exits. many towns & cities are putting in round-abouts for traffic flow. i have been noticing this issue when coming into round-abouts at various speeds. the nhtsa needs to get involved and get honda to recall these before serious injury or death occurs. thank you. *tr

Power steering is hard to turn while parking

Steering wheel locks up midway into steering when turning. this happened twice today. you have to steering it other way or loosens up after few seconds. i have had the recall service already performed regarding recent hard to steer at low speed. now it completely locks up - major safety hazard!!! *tr

Engine whines and shakes steering wheel. first at 70000 miles. checked and added ps fluid. worked for a while. 73k started again. added more fluid. 75k replaced drive belt. 80k noticed increased noise (whining), but no shaking of the wheel. brought into dealer and they said there are many issues with others and honda extended warranty to 7 years, but no recall. mechanic stated that at high speeds (hwy), ps pump seal could fail, leak and cause loss of power steering and possible safety issue. called honda usa and they said yes to warranty, but no to safety campaign- how can they be so irresponsible! *tr

While driving at 40 mph. the steering wheel shakes hard for about 4 sec. *tr

Every time it is raining and car goes through a puddle the battery light comes on and the car looses power steering. has happened numerous times and when going to the dealership i was told that they could not duplicate the problem because it was not raining at the time. they stated they could replace the power steering pump & reservoir and it might fix the problem. this is very dangerous and seems to be happening on quite a few of the honda vehicles. i know another person who owns they exact same model and year and they are experiencing the same problem. last few times it rained power steering went out 5-7 times during a 20 min drive so the number of times is increasing. *tt

Driving on 2 lane highway with my 3 kids in the van. the battery light comes on and i hear a few brief clunks from engine area. then i realize i have no power steering so i stop quickly at a safe spot. i look at the engine and see the accessory belt that drives power steering pump, alternator, and a/c is loose. i see that the outer ring on the crankshaft pulley is missing and only see rubber on its outside. it's over 100 deg.f outside and we're 10 miles from anything. i call a few towing companies and find one that can show up within an hour. we wait and also get a hold of a friend to pick us up after the tow truck shows up. they tow it to our local honda dealer. the dealer replaces the crankshaft pulley and drive belt. towing was $153.40 and repair at dealer was $349.56. losing power steering on narrow two lane highway going 55 mph is unsafe and the crankshaft pulley should not fail even at 111k miles. i have owned the van since new and have all proper maintenance done (preventively replaced accessory belt before and timing belt and water pump). *kb

While the vehicle was in the slow motion or trying to park position, the steering is very tight and unable to handle the vehicle. the other day i am almost hitting a vehicle because i am unable to turn the van while pulling from a parking lot. http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2006/honda/odyssey/steering/problem.aspx. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the steering wheel would become very difficult to turn approximately thirty minutes after the vehicle was started. the steering wheel required excessive force to make turns during the failures. the contact also stated that the power steering fluid reservoir was not large enough to maintain an adequate amount of fluid. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the reservoir would need to be replaced with a larger version. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 39,700. honda has released a service bulletin and honda had acknowledged that there indeed is a problem and will fix it only if the vehicle is still under warranty. updated 09/14/2011 *ln upated 12/19/11 *tr

I received a letter from the american honda dated summer 2011, regarding the warranty extension of the "steering wheel is hard to turn at low speeds and engine rpm." the term is up to 7 years or 100,000 miles. i bought my van in august of 2006, however, since i drive almost 100 miles a day (home to work), i have more than 100,000. here is my concern, i have been complaining about this said problem (regarding the steering wheels is hard to turn) in the honda dealer in corona even before receiving this letter, but all they said that it could be related to cold weather. later on about 4 months ago, they said the power steering pump needs to be replace. right after i received this letter from american honda, i gave them a call and told them that i'm already having this problem before, and that this is a known problem, but i didn't do anything about it because i was broke. i asked them if i can bring my van to the dealer to have them replace the power steering pump eventhough my mileage now is more than what they want which is 100,000 miles. they said, they can't help me because they are strict on warranty extension. and, since my mileage is now 165,000 miles, they can't help me even if the years qualifies me. they said to contact my local dealer where i bought the car and where i bring my car for repair and see if they can give me a discount to fix it. the point is it is not fair for them to set a limit on their warranty because this is an obvious factory defect. they should have covered the odyssey 2006 regardless of the mileage because based on this letter, it is obvious that there is a lot of complains about it. i do not have the money to fix this problem, but i am hoping that by reporting this, we can consider this product defect as a recall. *tr

While driving in light rain, my steering completely froze. i was making a left hand turn to cross an intersection and could not steer at all. this has happened a few times in the last few years. i spoke with honda international after hearing from the local dealer they have been hearing about this issue. so much so, that a mechanic from the shop was fixing clients cars on the side. he started installing some sort of splash guard after it happened to his wife's odyssey. i was told by honda international, not to drive when the road is wet. *tr

Power steering makes a whining noise, difficult to steer at low speeds and anytime during cold weather. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the vehicle was parked and as the steering wheel was turned, it exhibited an abnormal whining and became difficult to turn. the failure progressed and would occur whether the vehicle was parked or in motion. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that there was a rack and pinion leak. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 37,000 and the current mileage was 42,000.

Power steering pump noises. hard to turn in cold weather. *tr

Tl * the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the power steering was hard to turn and would sporadically exhibit an abnormal noise when driving at low speeds. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer had been contacted to report the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileage was 48,356.

Steering wheel in honda odyssey 2006 malfunction. steering wheel locks and gets very tight at low speeds and cause van to get stuck in a position and one has to turn the wheel real hard or accelerate to change position. especially difficult when maneuvering the van in parking lots or making sharp turns at traffic lights. at low speeds the power steering pump does not pump enough fluid according to dealer. the failure occurs always a low speeds and it leads to steering wheel getting stuck or becoming very tight to turn thereby causing the car to get stuck in one place. i reported the problem to honda and said this is manufacturing defect and a huge safety issue which needs to be addressed. all they did was state it is a manufacturing defect. i almost could not turn at the traffic signal and could have got hit by the car behind me a few days back and also could not turn into a street in traffic and almost got hit by another car behind me since i could not move. honda usa tells its consumers that they do not cover manufacturing defects leading to safety issues if vehicle is out of warranty. soon enough this is going to lead to a lot of steering issues and you can check the web with the search term "honda odyssey 2006 steering issues" and you will find many incidents as related to the power steering pump. steering is the crucial part of any vehicle and such callousness on part of honda definitely calls for a investigation before we see a lot of accidents due a steering wheel getting stuck. the dealers diagnosis after check up was to replace the steering pump so that the pump will push enough fluid at low speeds and not cause the steering wheel to get stuck. there is a potential that this can also occur at high speeds but for me it happens a low speeds. honda also does not allow consumers to talk to senior persons for resolution and stated consumer has reached end of line once it hits their phone system. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. while the vehicle was in the park position, the contact heard a loud buzzing noise intermittently thirty minutes after the vehicle was started. when attempting to turn the steering wheel in any direction, the noise became louder. the dealer was notified a diagnostic test was scheduled. the contact did not inform the manufacturer. the current mileage was approximately 42,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 41,000. the vin was unavailable.

2006 honda odyssey. power steering pump causing humming sound when turning the steering to the left or right. there is a tsb 07-005 for this. it's a known issue (defective part) and there are numerous owners who have reported the same on the internet, but honda has not recalled the vehicles. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda odyssey. the contact was driving 20 mph and attempting a left turn when the steering wheel became abnormally resistant. two days prior to the failure, the esc warning light had illuminated. the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic where the steering rack bolts were replaced. the dealer advised that the steering bolts had fractured from the vehicle. the current and failure mileage was 118,000.

Loss of power steering at low speeds especially when trying to park. was intermittent and progressed over two weeks. brought to independent mechanic told nothing wrong with power steering fluid or components. one week later brought to honda dealer told needs new power steering pump -car has 85,000 km. the pump should not give out so soon. $700.00 repair. asked about technical bulletins about power steering and mechanic said it only concerns the reservoir and that is not my issue. will have to have it fixed but feel there is a known problem and i should not bear all the cost. *tr

2006 honda odyssey, whining noise coming from power steering pump, and there is tsb 07-005 for this case, since car is out of warranty dealer is asking me to pay for the inspection. i called honda of america, and complained about this issue, but there is no guarantee honda of america will reimbursed or pay for the repair. *tr
