Gear shift is able to shift gear (shift from park) with no key in the ignition and no foot on the brake. child pulled on gear shift and car rolled into street and neighbor's lawn. fortunately, no injuries. car being taken in for repair. *jb
With the vehicle stopped (as at a stop sign or traffic light), and then accelerated to move, the engine revs but the vehicle hesitates. suddenly, the transmission engages and the vehicle lurches forward. the intensity is anywhere from a moderate bump to enough to cause the tires to ??squeal?? and loose traction. the same sensation occurs when the transmission shifts to the next gear. in reviewing these conditions on the internet, the repair is a replacement of the transmission. my check engine light is on and the obd code is a p0740. honda has extended the warranty and voluntarily replacing this transmission for vehicles originally destined and sold with in the us. my honda was purchased in the us and is registered in the us [north carolina] but was originally destined and sold in canada. they will not replace mine transmission since it is what they term a gray?? vehicle [a term honda usa uses to represent vehicles that are now in the us, but were delivered to a canadian dealer]. honda has said the only way they will replace my transmission is if there is a recall from the national highway traffic safety administration, something they do not expect to occur since they are voluntarily doing it for us vehicles. my vehicle was purchased in the us and is registered in the us and should be treated the same as other us vehicles. according to internet searches this can evolve to failure modes of sudden down shifts without notice and at any speed. currently the frequency of this condition occurring is now 60% -70% of the time. the significant number of vehicles that have had these symptoms and had the transmission replaced voluntarily indicate a systemic problem with a potential fatal failure mode. since a recall is the only mechanism to remove the discriminatory practices, a recall should be issued that requires all 2001 honda odyssey registered in the us showing these symptoms to have their transmission replaced. no discrimination should be permitted. *nm
Transmission failure, transmission jerking and shifting erratically, egr valve code, traction control light ,check engine light illuminated. took vehicle to shop advisor reported to me that the failure is a recall. honda will not warranty problem. honda will not repair without me paying out of pocket for repairs. all service items always complied with @ honda dealerships according to manual scheduling. *jb
2001 honda odyssey. consumer states transmission malfunctions and dissatisfaction with honda dealer. consumer requests reimbursement for repairs. *tgw the consumer stated the transmission didn't switch gears smoothly and it made noises. five months later, there was a weird vibration above 35 mph. the noises were still persistent, the d4 light was flashing, the check engine and tsc lights were flashing. the dealer performed some work on the front suspension. october 18, 2006 the transmission slipped from 3rd to 2nd gear while driving. the dealer advised the consumer a new transmission was needed which would cost $4,200. the dealer recommended a transmission flash since the consumer refused to pay for a transmission replacement. after the flush, the vehicle seemed to perform much better. however, occasional gear slipping and noise from the transmission could be heard from time-to-time. novemebr 27, 2007 the vehicle became sluggish, the transmission slipped while driving, the check engine and tsc lights were flashing, there were noises coming from the transmission. while driving on the highway, the transmission downshifted and the consumer almost had an accident and the check engine and tsc lights illuminated again. *jb
At 83,000 miles the second transmission on my 2001 honda odyssey failed (registered in my wife's name, lynn roessler). original transmission failed at 43,000 miles in 2003 and was replaced by honda under warranty. in july 2005 the second transmission began to slip, check engine light came on, d4 light began to blink, tcs light came on. returned call to honda dealer, who again replaced transmission and left inboard joint. i do not know if i have now have a new or rebuilt transmission. i am concerned that the two transmissions i have had so far have lasted, on average, about 41,000 miles.
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 honda odyssey. while driving at 60 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the contact pushed to the vehicle to the side of the road and had it towed to an authorized dealership who stated that the failure was within the transmission. the vehicle was then taken to a local repair shop where the transmission was replaced. the failure mileage was approximately 155,000. the current mileage was approximately 156,000. updated 07/26/10. *lj the consumer stated this is the second time he has experienced transmission failure. the first time, the torque converter was replaced. the consumer was informed his vehicle was not included in the recall. updated 08/31/10 *jb
5/28/05 first transmission replaced under warranty on 06/03/05 10/12/07 second transmission replaced under warranty 10/15/07 with 87,344 miles 11/14/11 third transmission not replaced with 166,230 miles all times incident occurred while driving. two times while on highway and car stopped working and towed to honda dealer. 1st incidence serviced at maine mall motors s. portland, me. 2nd and 3rd incidences dealt with executive honda wallingford, ct. american honda refuses to take any responsibility with defective transmission. four transmissions in a vehicle is excessive. even with my 166k+ mileage, car has been maintained well. believe defective and excessive replacement of my transmissions is unreasonable and is honda's responsibility to replace my transmission. never have had failure with transmission in previously owned vehicles even with high mileage. honda is taking advantage of consumers who pay good $$$ for below average workmanship and quality. i believe this transmission problem is deeper. *tr
Transmission defect, failure of dealer to cover under warranty
I have a 2001 honda odyssey ex minivan. when at a stop, facing uphill in drive, the vehicle will roll backwards as soon as you take your foot off the brake. it rolls as if it were a vehicle with a manual transmission, or as if you were in neutral. parked facing downhill, than starting in reverse (backing up the hill) the same problem presents itself, but it is even worse. this has led to several near accidents as we have adjusted to this unusual situation, as all automatic transmission automobiles we have owned in the past doi not behave in this manner. they "hold" on hills, at least momentarily, when the brake is released and the automobile is in drive. i wonder how many accidents this defect has caused while the drivers discioverd this flaw and adjusted their driving habits (it's a lot like driving a manual transmission). i contacted my local honda dealer, and they said this is "normal" with these vans and accord automobiles.
We purchased a new 2001 honda odyssey ex-navi from shockley honda in frederick, md. we had transmission related issues and as a result of a voluntary recall by american honda motor company, our transmission was replaced with a rebuilt unit in april 2005. the vehicle had approximately 78,000 miles at the time of replacement. we now have 202,000 miles and the vehicle is exhibiting the same shifting problems as before. i called the original dealer and they told me that honda is not offering any "goodwill" with respect to replacing the transmissions. my concern is that honda replaced my transmission in 2005 with a rebuilt, unmodified (not redesigned) transmission. i have read on internet forums that numerous buyers of this vehicle have had 2,3 even 4 replacements. what is being done by nhtsa to address this problem? what is nhtsa doing to hold honda accountable for just replacing failed units with rebuilt, defective transmissions instead of replacing failed transmissions with new, redesigned units? *tr
At approximately 38,000 miles my transmission on my 2001 honda odyssey failed. this repair was covered by an extension of the basic warranty of 36,000 miles as honda is aware that the transmission that they originally installed was defective. the replacement transmission has now failed at 67,000 miles and was also replaced by honda. my concern is that the transmission has not been replaced with anything but the same faulty transmission. i requested honda to extend the new transmission's warranty period to 100,000 miles from the time of replacement but was refused my request. i believe that they are aware that the problem has not been remedied and are installing defective parts in mine and other vehicles. i would request that the nhtsa look into others (as there are many) replaced transmissions and find out if my experience is unique or part of a trend. i can be contacted to supply evidence that the vehicle was maintained properly and this failure was not related to failure to follow guidelines of the manufacturer. *jb

Transmission failed and new trans installed and failed soon thereafter. the trans went into 2nd gear at high speed and momentarily locked up front wheels. if pavement was wet an accident could occur. i then found trouble symptoms is common and factory has no permanent fix for pattern failure defect. *nm

Transmission shifting incorrectly. on acceleration, will slip then suddenly catch producing a shock and spinning wheels. on deceleration, will downshift and grab abruptly, producing a shock or shaking the vehicle at low speeds. dealer lute reiley honda refused to fix in june, 2004. severe shocks from transmission failure have now caused engine mounts to fail. *jb
At 53,000 miles/2 years, gear shifts were suddenly delayed, sudden, not happening resulting in unreliable performance and driving hazards but not accident happened prior to taking to dealership. first transmission replaced under extented warranty (7yr/100,00 miles) issued by honda due to recognized workmanship problems with the transmissions. at 81,000 miles/3 yrs the second transmission experienced same problem. second transmission replaced under same extended warranty. the extended warranty will likely be exceeded when/if i have the same problem a third time as i put approximately 25-30,000 miles annually. i see from reading other complaints that this seems to be a widespread problem and i don't want to be paying for any replacement transmissions in the future. can something be done so that each replacement transmission must carry a new 7yr/100,000 mile warranty? *ak
The transmission has failed yet again on the 2001 odyssey van. we called honda us to take care of the problem. honda's only reply is that the warranty is expired and that they are not required to do anything additionally. we appealed to honda on several fronts, including the poor design, history of the van being unavailable, lost vacation as we were actually driving to a destination one time that it failed, and most importantly, safety. we requested that honda take care of this problem once and for all even though the mileage is higher because of the overall customer disruption, poor design, faulty manufacturing, time without use of the vehicle (throughout its life and this time as well), expense over time, and most importantly safety... the agent hung up on me even though i was stating my case in a respectful manner. he got agitated when i asked to speak with a representative with more decision authority. he indicated that it does not matter who i talk to- even the president of honda us would not make a different decision. we are extremely disappointed and facing yet another costly repair and car rental that we cannot really afford. in the last day, my family has incurred expenses of (order incurred) $99 diagnostic fee from a honda dealership, $70 initial diagnostic from a transmission rebuilder shop, $70 rental car through the weekend, and the rebuilder just called to have me authorize any $865 to get inside the transmission. so far the total is $1,104 and the car is not operational. given the poor design, faulty manufacturing, and safety of this unit, we respectfully ask that honda be compelled to take full responsibility for all out of pocket expense incurred associated with the failure of the transmission. *tr

The transmissionis failing on my 3-year-old honda odyssey at 65,500 miles. honda admits they have a problem. the transmission needs to be replaced and they will not do it under warranty because they say the vehicle is a "gray market" car. it was produced in canada like all other 2001 odyssey's and "imported" to the usa one-year-old with 18,000 miles. i bought it used. honda says they won't cover it under their newly announced extended warranty on defective transmissions because it was intended to be driven in canada. i did not realize that canadian roads were so different from those in minnesota. i asked if that meant that they were implying that i did something illegal. they said "oh no, but "brokers" bring these cars in from canada because there is a shortage in the usa and the prices are less in canada." somehow it is my fault that honda usa price fixing creates a gray market? does the vehicle not say honda all over it? was it not made on the same line in the same plant with the same parts as all of the other 2001 odyssey's? is corporate divisional infighting putting me the consumer in the middle? they make a defective tranny and now they won't stand behind it. honda had a sterling reputation until this transmission issue started to surface. a qualified transmission shop researched the problem and told me it is a saftey hazzard and could lock-up at highway speeds causing a catastrophic failure. do they really think if someone is killed by this they won't be held responsible in court? they should be ashamed of themselves. there is no excuse for poor product quality. they are trying to get me to go away and leave me high and dry with a $5,000 fix-it bill (dealer quote) on a 3-year-old vehicle i paid big bucks for. seems fraudulent to me! this is a disaster in the making and must be stopped before an innocent life is lost.*ak
When the consumer attempted to apply the accelerator, the vehicle failed to accelerate. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the consumer that the transmission needed to be replaced. please provide further details. *jb
Transmission failed 3 times. transmission obviously has design flaws. was repaired but the basic design flaws were not corrected. bearing failure could have lead to wheel lock up and loss of control. *jb
Honda is not honoring the extended warranty that they have on the transmissions of the 2001 honda odyssey. i purchased a honda recently and it turns out the seller did not disclose that the transmission is going out. i found out 5 days after bringing it home from a honda dealer. i also found out honda has an extended warranty on this but will not cover it because the car came from canada which was also not disclosed. both honda us and honda canada have extended warranties on this but will not cover it because it is a canadian honda (although it was sold by a us dealer in the us to the party i bought it from) and because i am a us citizen. i read an article in usa today that said honda had so many complaints on their transmissions that were extending the warranty on this year of honda odyssey and other vehicles they make to 100,00 miles or 7 years due to consumer complaints made to the nhtsa because nhtsa was getting ready to issue a recall. honda has refused to honor the warranty on the honda i purchased and it only has 40,000 miles on it and is a 2001. i did not know anything about as honda terms gray market cars. as far as i am concerned most of the honda's are made in canada that come into the pacific northwest , some are alloted for canada and some for the us as i have found out. but me as the average consumer knew nothing about this and honda does not want to honor this extended warranty because of that. honda made this automobile, they are having problems with the transmissions. they have extended warranties on it in both countries. this is a safety issue, i am scared to drive this vehicle now as i do not want to risk my childrens safety or mine if the transmission should fail completely, say on the freeway. honda knows of the problem and has an extended warranty on this and has refused to honor the warranty on this vehicle . can you please help me?*ak
Tl- the contact owns a 2001 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate to accelerate when pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be repaired. the torque converter was replaced instead of replacing the transmission as it was recommended by the mechanic, but honda motor co had the final word. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the contact also stated that the vehicle intermittently stalled while driving at various speeds. in addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was once involved in a crash in which the air bags did not deploy. the manufacturer was notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 11v260000 (air bags:frontal:driver side inflator module). the failure mileage was 75,000. kmj ...update 01/20/12 *bf updated 02/07/12 the consumer stated on august 8, 2008 he was involved in an accident, and the air bags failed to deploy. the consumer stated he never received a recall regarding a problem with the air bags. updated 03/26/12

A few days ago we had to take our 01 odyssey to the honda dealer to replace the transmission for the third time. like clockwork every 15000 to 20000 miles this car needs a new transmission. is there anything we all can do to eliminate this annoying problem forever. any help would be appreciated.
Near death/accident experiences =4 transmission failures= 2 replacements since new purchase egr valve replaced= should have been replaced when the second transmission was installed. it was not even addressed. jerky actions in vehicle aggravate injury. stranded in ga. on xmas holiday. loss of visitation, vacation and honeymoon. transmissions replaced (not without a fight), it has been stated that warranty extended lifelong, (without proof of documentation). rotors warping. dealer (owner) states, they just sell vehicles, they don't make the vehicles.*ak
Transmission problems on 2001 odyssey's aren't limited to us models. we purchased a canadian model, and are on the 3rd transmission, and none of our local dealerships will assist us because it's a canadian model. dealer was informed that the vehicle was canadian model, and that we didn't know what the warranty coverage was. dealer informed us that 2nd transmission was covered under warranty, and then sued us because they couldn't collect from american or canadian honda. we have been a loyal honda product consumer, but the treatment we've received for such has been a severe disappointment. we won't be purchasing honda in the future. *ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 honda odyssey. the contact was driving 50 mph when the transmission failed to operate with the illumination of the check engine warning indicator. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the transmission was replaced but the failure later recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 27,000.
Transmission failed while traveling up a heavily traveled two-lane mountain road (state highway 330 to running springs, ca). vehicle blocked traffic until it could be pushed into the ditch on the shoulder resulting in damage to paint. vehicle has 19,905 miles; slipping problem had been reported to dealer on two occasions; in both instances dealer denied knowledge of any problem. *nlm
2001 honda odyssey automatic transmission failure on 3 separate occasions as follows: first transmission failure on 20 may 2003 at 37,531 miles. second transmission failure on 14 may 2007 at 119,849 miles. third transmission failure on 23 april 2012 at 193,820 miles. these failures are due to a defect in the material or workmanship of the transmission for this vehicle as acknowledged by the american honda motor company in their letter titled "automatic transmission n warranty extension" in the winter of 2002. the transmission was replaced with honda financial assistance for the first and second transmission failures; however honda will no longer provide assistance in the case of the third transmission failure. the failure of this transmission on the open road will cause the vehicle to come to a stop. the latter condition is hazardous on roads with heavy traffic and high road speeds. your assistance is requested to encourage honda to fix this defective transmission. *tr

While driving back from vacation in nashville, tn on i-65n the transmission began slipping and the vehicle began to slow down rapidly. the particular area in nashville did not have much of a shoulder to pull off on. my family and i were very fortunate to find an off ramp soon and exit the interstate. i found a honda dealer in nashville and was told i would have to wait three days to wait for any kind of service. we were able to make it home to indianapolis. the transmission had to be replaced. this has happened at 43,865 miles, 85,069 miles, and just recently at 152,000 miles. *tr
