Transmission failure on 2000 honda odyssey. while driving on a highway transmission started to behave erratically, shifting between gears. check engine light ant tsc sensor lights went on. the vehicle had to be towed and the dealership confirmed "internal transmission failure". *tr

I'm writing to you to inform you about the serious issue with the transmission that was originally put into honda odyssey's from 2000-2003. first of all i would like to introduce myself. my name is hoang pham and my family owns an automotive repair shop in arlington, va and have always been loyal customers to american honda and their vehicles, always have recommended their product to customers looking to purchase new vehicles since we were very pleased with their products. i've always known about this issue with their transmissions and how they have according to them "known defects in materials and worksmanship." i am writing to you now to let you know that these vehicles are potentially dangerous driving around without getting repaired and having the "updated" transmission installed, my vehicle now sits with only 79000 miles on the odometer and honda refuses to take care of any issues, i obviously can repair this vehicle myself but find it hard to pay for something that a manufacturer acknowledges as a defect. i understand that they have had a 109,000 miles or 7 years and 9 months warranty extension on it but i believe that is not enough. people will be seriously injured or killed if this is not taken care of properly, luckily for me my transmission failed in a parking lot and not at highway speed going 60-65 miles per hour. *tr

Transmission started slipping - took it to dealer to have checked and services. they changed fluid, filters etc. the problem was worse after they did that. *tr

We have a 2000 honda odyssey. honda replaced the transmission under recall at about 68,0000 miles, and it was replaced before we noticed any problems with it. we were outside the 3 year warranty they had given us on the replacement when we starting noticing the transmission slip. they refused to replace it under warranty when we took it in, telling us repair cost would be $4500. at about 130,0000 miles, the replaced transmission actually failed while we were driving on a trip out of town. after it failed, we paid someone else to repair it, causing us over 3500 in towing, repair and rental car costs. we were stranded on the side of a road with a family of 4 in the 105 degree texas heat until we were able to get assistance. *tr

I own a 2000 honda odyssey minivan. my wife (51 yrs old) was driving it on rt 1 in new jersey and when the traffic light turned green the engine revved but wouldn't move and then all of a sudden it started moving. this happened 2 times. it also now shifts gears from 1st to @nd gear at 3000 rpm's.i took the van to my mechanic and he put the obdii code reader on the car and got a p1740 code which means the transmission is failed. the van has 93,000 miles on it. i called american honda about this and they did a search on my vin # and told me the transmission was changed ar 53,540 miles at huntington honda in huntington, long island, ny, so the 2nd transmission only lasted 40,000miles. the dealer wants 3000.00 dollars for a remanufactured transmission with a 1 year 12,000 miles warranty. i don't trust car dealers so i'm letting my honda mechanic do it(he has been fixing honda for 25 years). reading many honda odyssey forums on line apparently there's a design flaw and honda is well aware of it as your organization is probably aware as well. just a footnote to say i take great care of my vehicles, especially the one my wife and 2 kids are riding in!!!!! *tr

2000 honda odyssey transmission is slipping with 166,900 miles on it. *tr

2000 honda odyssey transmission defective. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while parked, the vehicle rolled away independently and crashed into another vehicle. the vehicle was destroyed. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the incident. the vehicle was not inspected for the cause of the failure. the failure and the current mileage was 145,000.

2000 honda odyssey. original owner. 149000 miles, 2nd transmission failure. known problem honda will not replace/ correct. *tr

Another 2000 honda odyssey p0740 transmission failure. honda has previously recalled known transmission defects in 2002 and 2003 models. can't understand why 2000 models only got an warranty extension. (un)luckily, my transmission lasted long enough to pass the extended mileage limit. honda should recall the 2000 transmissions as they did with other models. *tr

I have a problem with honda odyssey transmission, then took it to the dealer to be replace and they said that i have to pay out of pocket. i believe that there are many people out there have the same problem as i do. i feel it is not safe for me while i am driving, especially i use freeways and highways up to 95%. think about what happen to the transmission when it starts breaking apart and fell of on the highways or freeways... that is a really big problem. *tr

2000 honda odyssey coil spring failure on drivers side and transmission failure. *tr

My 200 honda odyssey lost all acceleration as i was traveling uphill. i was able to pull over after moving over two lanes of every heavy and fast traffic. the transmission completely failed. this vehicle had a new transmission put in due to failure at 109,000 miles.,about 2 1/2 years ago. july 2007. the dealer now says that they wont cover this new transmissin. i've only put 39,000 miles on it and the original transmission had a recall of up to 100,000 miles.. can you please help me. ed resendes *tr

Well maintained vehicle with less than 150,000 miles of mixed city/country driving requires third transmission. required replacement with new transmission. in our case the vehicle failed to engage gears, stranding us in -40 degree wind chill. *tr

Check engine light came on. according to dealer it is a transmission problem with the honda odyssey. odysseys from the years 1999-2001 have had problems with the transmission and have been recalled. symptoms: d4 light dims. delayed engagement of gears. harsh shifting. have the car in shop now. *tr

Honda odyssey transmission went out while driving down the road , had to stop and pull off road to get help getting it home. now in researching the issues at hand i see there is a major problem with honda trannys. why cant they find a solution and save everyone some time and money. *tr

Transmission failed and left us stranded on the shoulder of the highway. another time i had to drive on the shoulder of the highway until i could get it off the highway. very dangerous to have an unreliable transmission on the highway. *tr

I own a 2000 honda odyssey. i am sure you are familiar with their known transmission issues. honda is well aware of this problem, and without a recall, decided to simply extend the warranty from 5yrs to 7yrs, knowing that most people would run into problems after the 7yr mark, my engine light came on at the 6yr mark. i have always taken the vehicle to the honda dealership for service. as the engine light was on, i was told to just ignore it, as it must have come on after filling up gas, and not to worry, as it will go off automatically. finally i told them to check the codes, and now they tell me it needs a new transmission, but to continue driving it, as just because the light is on, the transmission is not "dead" and to continue driving until i notice any problems. well, after a 4hr road trip, the engine light and tcs light came on, and i didn't realize the extent of the problem, until i stopped and had to make a lt hand turn. as i stepped on the gas to enter the intersection, the van hesitated, and then jerked forward. had the delay been any longer, my family and myself would have been in a serious accident. i replaced the transmission at honda, and now 18months later, it needs to be replaced again. honda is well aware of this transmission issue, and should be responsible for repairing this problem once and for all. why keep replacing a transmission knowing it will only last another under 2yrs. my only option is to sell this van, but it's not fare to the next unfortunate person. this is a serious safety hazard. *tr

Purchased a used 2000 honda odyssey in 2005; at the time of purchase the veh was still under limited manufactures warranty. very well aware of the transmission recall. we are now going on our 4th transmission replacement since the purchase. the last replacement was in february 2008; they made me fight for a warranty on that refurbished / replacement transmission 3 year or 36,000 miles. well this one barely lasted 12,000 miles and i am completely fed up. my wife transports my remaining 4 school aged children around. this vehicle has stalled on numerous times in busy traffic, and this time around i will not except a refurbished or rebuilt or used tranny. i will fight for a new one, or a complete refund of the money spent! *tr

I purchased a used honda odyssey in 2008 . has vehicle for 4 weeks and notice the check engine light came on. took vehicle to dealer and was told that the transmission needed to be replaced. transmission code p0740-transmission failure. i found out later that there was a silent recall on honda odyssey years 1999 to 2001. *tr

While i was driving on i-i0 with my children my 2000 honda odyssey started jerking and jumping whenever i had to excel. finally it came to an jerking stop i had to move my car out of the way of traffic and did not snow what to do i am scared to death of being hit when finally my 17 year old son jumps up and puts my car into park and back into drive and slowly jerked it of the highway. *tr

I purchased an used 2000 honda odyssey (62000 miles) from drexel hill honda ( pa) on 08/11/2008 it has transmission problem on 09/01/2008. i just got my car less than a month, and putted on 500 miles on it. took it to honda dealer, found dtc p0740: tc failure dtc p0730: incorrect gear ratio they advised to replace automatic-transmission. but american honda don't replace their failed transmission for free. they offer me 50-50. i don't want to pay $1200 for their bad transmission. *tr

Noticed car slipping when in 2nd and 3rd gear. took van into dealer in june of 2008 for diagnoses. internal failure was diagnosed and in aug tranny went out at 120,549miles. had honda dealer repair issue. we were offered a discount thru customer relations. now in 2013 with about 194,000 miles transmission is about to go. completely unacceptable. two transmissions go bad in 13 years. honda needs to be held accountable for their lousy product. this was an expensive investment. *tr

Transmission trouble within 3 years of replacement by dealer. *tr

2000 odyssey, fully serviced by dealer since purchase. recently transmission started giving a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd and also got a check engine sign. took it to the dealer and was told that the catalytic converter need to be replaced and the transmission needs to be replaced as well. i had purchased an extended warranty (100,000 miles) from honda at the time of purchase. later the transmission warranty was extended to 109,000 from their standard warranty. my car has 141,000 miles. i called american honda -- but they are not willing to do anything even when they know that this model year has problems and there was already an extended warranty in place. i think honda quality and service are going down. *tr

Purchased honda odyssey new in late summer/fall of 2000. vehicle downshifted hard while braking since new. thought it was how the vehicle operated. i got a postcard in the mail a few years ago stating honda was going to extend the warranty on the transmission because of a potential problem. i currently have 136,000 miles on the van. the check engine light came on 2 weeks ago. i took it to the garage to have inspection done & to figure out why the light came on. the check engine light came on about 3-4 years ago and honda said it was the catalytic converter and the dealer (piazza honda of reading, pa) replaced it for free. when i went to pick up the van from the inspection and the garage would not pass the inspection. the error code that came up was "po740" and they said the transmission would need to be replaced, but i should take it to the dealer to verify. i took the van from the garage to the dealer and gave them the receipt from my inspection (which had the error code on it). the service guy took the receipt with him into the garage bay, talked to the manager and came back out. he told me i need a new transmission and it would cost me $2500-$4500 to replace it. i asked him if they were doing any "goodwill" with the on going transmission issue and he said no. i also asked specifically if they would split the cost and he said no. i have had the van serviced several time at that specific honda dealer and nothing was ever said to me about the transmission issue. honda expects me to pay for a new transmission on a known defect in their product. *tr

While traveling for work in my honda odyssey (2000) , my tcs light came on and i experienced "bucking" as i accelerated from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear. the engine would also rev. my check engine light was already on from a previous problem that honda has not resolved for 2 years. i brought my odyssey into the service department at a honda dealership and was informed that i had transmission failure (p0740) and an emission problem (t1457). i called honda america and was informed that they would pay 25% of the bill and i would cover 75%. i am not satisfied since 2000 odyssey's have a history of transmission failure. i will have the transmission replaced however felt that my safety was jeopardized during my travels as i had difficulty accelerating on major highways and throughout major cities. *tr

I had one transmission replaced, now my second one at 3.5 years old is sometimes going out of reverse and into drive along with driving along in drive and all the sudden does nothing when your foot is on the gas. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. after the vehicle was repaired, the check engine light and the tracking control system (tcs) light began illuminating. the check engine light remained illuminated and the tcs light illuminates when 40 mph is reached. the dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. the diagnostic produced error code ap0740 (a transmission problem that will lead to transmission failure). the contact referenced technical service bulletin numbers 0104101 (automatic transmission) and 10013844 (automatic transmission). the vin was unknown. the current mileage was 130,000 and failure mileage was 125,000.

First incident 5/5 08-transmission was shifting hard and then engine light and tcs light went on. brought it to honda dealer the ran the code and stated internal trans failure. since we are the original owners and had all trans service at honda they agreed to split half the cost. i asked what if this should happen again the service rep stated "don't worry about it" it will last at long time. well here i am again with 45,000 miles later same problem. brought it to honda and they said "sorry you on your own" 4-5 thousand to replace. that is more than the van is worth. i think it's terrible that honda is aware of transmission problems but refuse to recall or fix them correctly. when the transmission starting slipping on 12/8/12 i was in the middle of traffic and it slipped into neutral without warning. i almost was hit. i couldn't move, the van had no power, just reverted up the 3000 rpm's i was scared. i didn't know what to do. i guess when people start getting killed in car accidents from the defective transmissions from honda maybe something will hopefully be done about it. *tr

Honda 2000 odyssey lx irregular transmission failure. *tr

Transmission jerking, tcs light on, malfunction light on, need to replace automatic transmission. known problem in this model/make/year. *tr

2000 honda odyssey ex - experienced transmission slip, followed by a jerk while driving. i thought it would need a flush, even though it has not reached the honda maintenance schedule. had the mechanic take a look at it and flushed out the transmission fluid with new honda atf. issue started arising a few weeks after the flush and it became a problem. took it to the mechanic again and found out it was a transmission problem. the car currently has roughly close to 82k miles and dealership stated this is out of the extended 7yr warranty phase. i did some research and found out this vehicle is under the class lawsuit for '99-'01 odyssey model (http://www.hondatransmissionsettlement.com/php/login.php), which extends the warranty to 109k miles. however, manly honda of santa rosa denied coverage and it would cost ~$4k for repair. we only use the odyssey for weekend family drives or pick up furniture/supplies from costco. i've always thought honda would be considerate and vehicle very sturdy, but now i would have to think twice before purchasing another honda. p.s. i've owned 4 honda/acura vehicles in the past and never had an issue, but this issue is getting out of hand. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you. *tr

For my 2000 honda odyssey at 62,907 mileage. got diag. code p0740, indicated it's transmission problem. though got some goodwill discount from dealer, still need to pay $500 to cover the labor cost. . heard lots of complaints from 99-04 odyssey owners. fear my 2nd rebuilt transmission will fail soon. to me, this is design defect. wonder why honda not issue a recall? please investigate. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. while driving approximately 30 mph, the contact heard a loud noise and the vehicle hesitated when the accelerator pedal was depressed. occasionally, the vehicle stalled and the rpm's would increase excessively. the engine warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they found no failures. recently, the transmission failed and needs to be replaced. the vehicle has not been repaired. the contact was displeased to know that his vehicle was not included in the recall due to its mileage. the vin and recall number were unknown. the failure mileage was 80,000 and current mileage was 118,000.

Transmission out after 107k miles. *tr

I have purchased a 2000 honda odyssey from willis honda on 10/26/2007 when i went home to register my car on the honda website. the owners page said there was an extended warranty for the transmission. that ws still open. i have noticed delayed shifting. and yesterday when driving on the highway there was a loud bang coming from the back of the car? the car i have bought was the dealers service car. the transmission should have been repaired while it was under warranty now the warranty just about expired 7 years or 100,000 miles and it is just about 100,000 miles. please fix. thank you. *tr

I was driving my 2000 honda odyssey ex along the lombard street in san francisco when the transmission suddenly failed. i had 2 children and 3 adult passengers in the car. i stopped at the inclined road waiting for other cars in front to drive up. i then switched the gear to "2" hoping that it will be enough to drive the car. at that point, it failed to accelerate forward but instead started moving backwards even if i attempted to max the gas pedal. i tried shifting to gear "1" but still the weight was pulling us down and it crashed the car behind causing a minor damage on the exteriors of both cars. i then asked all my passengers to get off the car and somehow i was able to maneuver the car down slope. i then parked the car in the side street, turned off the engine, opened the hood and let it cool down for about 30 minutes. after that i was able to drive the car home and tried to avoid steep inclined roads. researching the internet, i found several reports of transmission problems in honda odyssey minivans and my 2000 model appears to be included in the list that honda has extended the transmission warranty to 100k miles. is this true? was the problem in my car an indication of a failing transmission and/or a manufacturing defect? the car has 81k miles and i'm the second owner and it is already out of standard warranty. i planned to have it checked by a mechanic. i used to love this odyssey but after this incident i'm no longer sure if i can really rely on this car. any help would be highly appreciated. *jb

Honda odyssey 2000 transmission failures, 5 transmission changes in 7 years. the last time to change for a new transmission was on september 27, 2007 at 125,079 miles. the repair cost was $3,634.05, which was outrageous and but not reimbursed by honda corporation due to the high mileage per its management. however, for only 125,000 miles, i had to change transmission 5 times in seven years, which is very ridiculous. i believe that the transmission failure is defect of the car instead of the high mileage. *jb

Transmission went out at 73000 miles. honda replaced with a remanufactured unit only due to the class action law suit filed against them. the replacement trans was returned twice to the dealer to complain about a high pitch wine in 3rd gear. they said it was ok and did nothing. now this reman trans has only 35000 miles and it shows a po740 code and has an engagement problem from park to drive or neutral to drive. honda says tough luck, your on your own. honda customer service case # [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 honda odyssey. while driving 20-40 mph, the dashboard light would illuminate intermittently. the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. approximately three months later while driving 30-40 mph the vehicle would hesitate then fail to accelerate when he depressed the accelerator pedal. the dealer stated that the egr valve caused the failure and made the replacement however, the failure continued to occur. the dealer then stated that the transmission caused the failure and recommended a transmission replacement. as of january 3, 2008, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. there is a recall for the power train: automatic transmission (nhtsa campaign id #04v176000) however, the dealer stated that his vin was not included. the failure mileage was 74,169 and current mileage was 84,126.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. while driving 20 mph, the contact experienced transmission failure. there was a slip in the transmission, but he thought it was just wear and tear of the vehicle. someone informed the contact of a recall, but he never received a notice. he called honda and was informed that there was a recall, but due to a technicality regarding the warranty or time limits, he was ineligible for the repair. the contact stated that the transmission slipped multiple times. the dealer stated that because the vehicle exceeded 100,000 miles, there was nothing that could be done. the purchase date and recall number were unknown. the current mileage was 142,000 and failure mileage was 130,000.

Numerous transmission failures requiring multiple replacements. the last one was less than 20000 miles, and it was discovered the latest failure would have been prevented had honda notified transmission repair facilities to also replace a control module.*ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle decreased in speed and eventually stopped without warning. the contact stated that smoke appeared under the hood of the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. it was determined the transmission failed, for the second time. . the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 134,000. ma 10/22/2015 updated 12/10/15.8jb

I bought my 2000 honda odyssey brand new, at 40,000 miles in 2006 my transmission failed in an intersection that almost killed my family. honda replaced my transmission. then in 2009 while i was on vacation about 150 miles away from my home about 2am in the morning on a highway in pa with 80,000 miles my transmission failed again once again putting my family in danger ! the honda dealer in pa replaced my transmission. i was stuck in pa with my family. i had to leave my car out there for a week. then again after honda replace my transmission at 111,000 my transmission failed again. this is a major problem that honda is not fixing ! *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds with pressure applied to the accelerator pedal, the automatic transmission was delayed in shifting gears and the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the automatic transmission needed to be replaced. after the replacement, the sluggish transmission problem persisted. the vehicle was returned to the dealer for further inspection. it was determined the automatic transmission was slipping and needed rebuilt. the manufacturer was alerted.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the check engine warning light illuminated intermittently. the dealer advised the contact that by refueling the vehicle, it could have triggered the light to illuminate. later, the vehicle began to show signs of abnormal violent jerking. the vehicle was later taken in for diagnostic testing where she was informed that the transmission, catalytic converter, stabilizer and links, front motor mount, right side motor mount, and alignment all needed repairs. the manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. the current mileage was 116,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.
