Ignition switch recall
Several times over past two weeks vehicle has stalled unexpectedly shortly after starting or while driving - dashboard lights and gauges (including odometer) all blank except 3 blinks of green "key" light (immobilizer indicator); accessories stay operational (radio, etc) but engine shuts off. will re-start after a few tries, typically; failed tries include engine starting while key held in start position but dying immediately when returning key to "run" position. will stay running if key is held between "start" and "run" location. when this happened while driving, was able to shift to neutral while coasting and restart the engine, holding key near start, to get enough runtime to get the car to a safe place off the road. recall to this effect apparently was performed back in 2002-2003; looks like recurrence of same problem?? what are my recourses?
Recently, while traveling on interstate 94, the check engine light came on in my vehicle along with a light that reads "tcs". shortly after these two lights came on, my vehicle began having problems accelerating. when i drive my vehicle, i have problems with the van taking off and maintaining stability once in motion. during travel on highways, freeways, interstates, or city streets, my vehicle violently shifts from first gear to second gear when i press on the accelerator, causing it to slow down unexpectedly before jerking into motion in the middle of traffic. also, during recent night time travel the headlights began to flicker, go dim then get bright again. the vehicle also slows down when turning corners then will suddenly jump into motion. also, the driver side passenger door recently went off track causing a screaming alarm to sound during travel. i have recently had to have the high pressure power steering line replaced because it had a hole in the upper hose.i am extremely concerned that the poor acceleration of my vehicle and the violent jerking from first to second gear will cause an accident. my vehicle is my only mode of transportation to work, school and any important place that i need to travel to.
I'm continuously having problems with both slider doors jamming ,sticking shut, saying they aren't shut all the way. used to be able to fix by pulling fuses to rest doors..now they won't even open manually at times. passenger side files open while driving

Our 1999 honda odyssey has had the p0740 torque clutch converter solenoid circuit (open) code displayed numerous times, we thought since it was a serious issue and the transmission had already been replaced within 20,000 miles that we should actually take it to the dealer in marysville, wa and have them do a transmission flush then a supervisor and said no you should have us run a diagnostic by one of our master techs. after reiterating this seriousness of our transmission issue the code coming on and delays in shifting mostly just barely noticeable, they assured us if we paid $129 for a diagnostic that a master tech could get to the issue, however they later told us after we got the car back and called on the issue that an apprentice (not a master tech) had done the entire inspection and came up with no problems except a different code having to do with up bad catalytic converter which had never been an issue before and told us we may need to get that replaced soon. the transmission code p0740 came up on our way home from the dealership. i told them of the code and the research i have done and asked what else to do and they told me there is nothing that can be done that is a transmission death code and we would need to replace the transmission, to which i asked even though it was just replaced 20,000 miles ago and he said maybe you got a bad transmission. q: are they just all bad for this vehichle?
Driving the vehicle without sputtering or otherwise indicating a problem all gauges and engine cuts out, i can put the vehicle in neutral and usually it will restart and go, but lately not all the time. it may take getting to the side of the road putting it in park and restart 3 or 4 times and then stay running and not have a problem for a few days. when it does this on the interstate traveling at 70 mph with no warning, this can be dangerous for the person behind me. when it stops running and i lose power steering, brakes and coasting trying to restart while in neutral praying i don't get hit from behind as i navigate decelerating cutting across traffic to the shoulder. scary. chances are my airbag won't work either at this critical time if the brakes fail to stop me. all the built in safety features are not working.

While driving in the highway at 65 mph, my 99 odyssey engine died and every thing turned off !! of course the steering wheel became too hard to operate and steer. fortunately i was at far right lane. than it started doing the same thing more often. i wonder if the honda dealers would fix that free of charge, since i heard that was a recall about the same problem. *tr
As i merge onto the highway from the ramp the engine shutdown suddenly without any warning i almost got rear ended. i was so scare! luckily, i was able to pull the van to the shoulder but multiple start the engine the engine shutdown again. after waiting for about 3 minutes i am able to start the van and run fine without any problem. after 15 minutes driving on the right lane of the highway and i got off to the residential street for about 5 minutes and at the stop light the engine stop again. *tr

Ignition switch (3150-s0x-a01) failed and stalled engine while driving multiple times. switch felt hot at time of failures. contacts inside were burned at time of failure. switch had been replaced once before at about 73,000 miles for same problem. honda says this vehicle not subject to recall although others of this vintage with similar problem were. *tr
There was a recall back on 4/25/00 for the door latch assembly. the recall # was 00v119000. i'm having the same exact problem again with the door not closing all the way. i called hennessey honda in woodstock, ga and they told me that they didn't have that recall on record. then they went on to say that they won't fix it again. i checked the history of the vehicle recalls and don't see where this was done. why should i have to pay for this repair when it was already determined that it's a manufacturer defect? is there a time limit on how long honda will fix this repair for free? *kb
1999 honda odyssey. consumer writes in regards to sliding doors and ignition switch recalls *tgw the consumer stated the sliding doors would not close properly using the electric close switch, but they can be closed manually. it was the third time, the consumer experienced the problem. honda motor co. informed the consumer, the doors were fixed in 2002 which was before the consumer purchased the vehicle. the consumer experienced a problem with the ignition switch, in which he had to pay out of pocket for the repairs. he was also informed the ignition switch was fixed previously as well. *jb
The passenger side sliding door on my 1999 honda odyssey has failed to open on many occasions and i didn't think of it as anything more than a nuisance. this time one of my children's fingers was caught in the door and we were unable to open the door either from the inside or the outside for several minutes until we got a passerby to force it open. his finger was significantly more damaged than if we had been able to immediately open the door, not to mention the panic and distress and being trapped. *tr
While driving on the highway the engine just quit, causing a loss of power, power steering, power braking, etc.... fortunately i was able to nurse the car to a spot along the highway to pull over. i was able to get the car restarted after a couple of minutes, and it continued to run fine until i was exiting the freeway, and the engine quit again while approaching the exit ramp. i coasted to the top of the exit ramp and was able to get the car restarted at the top of the exit ramp and drove home. i subsequently took the car to the honda dealership, where they diagnosed the problem as a faulty ignition switch.
On august 9, 2010, our 1999 honda odyssey ex stalled while we were idling on an open drawbridge, on hwy 42 in sturgeon bay, wi. this is a two lane bridge, probably nearly a mile long, with no shoulder, so we were looking at a major traffic problem had we not been able to restart the car about a minute later and drive off the bridge. two days later, august 11, the car stalled while moving on port washington rd, in glendale, wi. at that point the instrument panel went dark. this time, we were able to coast to a stop in the right lane of 4 lane road, and were again able to restart the car, this time within about 30 seconds. the honda dealer's service department traced the problem to the electrical portion of the ignition switch and replaced the switch. we had the identical problem in 2004, with the odyssey once stalling on a busy freeway at 60 mph in the center lane. at that time there was recall in effect for this problem and the faulty ignition switch was replaced free of charge. the safety recall needs to renewed for this problem as these switches seem to last about 5 years and then go bad again. we are lucky we did not need to be towed a mile across a bridge, with 4 miles of cars backed up behind us. *tr
On june 28, our 1999 honda odyssey lx lost all electrical power and engine power while traveling on i-94 e bound between battle creek mi and the exit to i-69. the emergency flashers would not activate. we were able to coast to a stop on the shoulder, then after placing the car in park and switching off the ignition, i was able to restart the car. it ran fine for the next two hours, but the same thing happened while traveling south on i-75 north of dayton, oh. this time, i noticed the gauges came back on and was able to resume the cruise control and proceed with out stopping. in got case, traffic was not so heavy as to be a danger, and luckily we were not in the passing lane. the same failure occurred just before we made it onto our street, but for a shorter time and we continued home. the next night, while returning home on local streets, going about 35mph, this failure occurred again, but this time, we had the headlight on (it was about 9:15pm), and we lost all lighting (interior gauges and exterior). on june 30, the dealer was able to locate the problem - failed ignition switch electrical contacts. the dealer claims this car had been serviced for this problem previously as a result of a recall. i checked your online notices: may 16, 2002 nhtsa: 02v120000. electrical system ignition switch. this recall needs to be re-issued for this safety related problem. we would have had serious problems in bad weather; loss of windshield wipers as well as lighting and brake lights. and at night, it could have been very bad on the highway. Almost had a real live auto accident. then researched and came across nhtsa recall #03v423000. called honda, and they said, "not our problem, it doesn't apply to your vin". end of conversation. so, what recourse do i have? what are your recommendations? is there someone else higher up i can contact as opposed to the honda 800 #? thanks. *tr
On august 16, 2010 at 3:12pm, i received email stating: "after inspection the tire it is not on the recall list." message was sent to mfr. on may 8, 2010: to customer service; i purchased 98t futura 2000 lte part number 8694568 2156516 and when i was on i95, i had to exit to go to the nearest dealer of tires (hoping to avoid a towing bill) being firestone tire place just off of i95 at the palm beach lakes blvd. area in palm beach county, florida. your tire acted like a flat tire would being on a major highway. your tire was looking very wavy and when taken off the vehicle looked like a partial twisted pretzel. i got my vehicle re-aligned, as well as, purchased a new firestone tire! replacing tire with approx. less than 30 days from your tire purchase. i was going out-of-town to my dad's home, a trip approx. 100 miles away one way when this happened in route. i kept the tire and at the time i thought it was an isolated defective tire and was going to write to the manufacturer for remedy. i'm just discovering that there is a recall on this particular tire and expect to be compensated for! truly yours, [xxx] and please send any mailings to: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
The van suddenly shuts itself off (engine stalled, no radio, no lights on dash) while driving. it feels like a "parked" vehicle moving on the road.*tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving at speeds of 80 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and restarted without driver intent. the vehicle continued to proceed throughout the failure. the dealer stated that there were two previous recalls for the starter, both of which the vehicle received repairs under the recall campaign. the dealer stated that the manufacturer would not offer any assistance with any further repairs to the vehicle. repairs would be made at the owners expense. the contact was concerned and did not believe that failure was caused by the starter; yet, that there could possibly be a defect in the ignition wires. the failure mileage was 212,000.
1999 honda odyssey. while driving various speeds, the vehicle sporadically stalled without warning. speed was not a factor at the time of the failure. i called the dealer in reference to nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) (also honda service bulletin 02-031) and they stated the recall was already done. i would be responsible for the repair costs. i contacted honda corporate (case# n032009-10-xxxxxxx) and they stated i would be responsible for the repair costs. clearly there is a defect in the "improved" ignition switch used for the recall; the replacement cost should be covered by honda. the vehicle was repaired at a cost of $250, plus $110 to reconnect the aftermarket remote starter. the failure mileage was 125,000 and current mileage was 125,000. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. intermittently while driving the vehicle will stall without any prior warnings. the vehicle was taken to a local repair facility and the efi relay was replaced. the vehicle was repaired according to recall 02v120000(electrical system:ignition:switch) in 2005. the manufacturer was notified, and he was advised that he was eligible for one free remedy per recall. the current mileage was 91,365. the failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
1999 honda odyssey lx engine suddenly stops while in traffic (3 times), no warning lights, no power steering, no power brakes. this model was recalled in 2002 for faulty ignition starter switch that had contacts corrode and stop engine as if the ignition key had been shut off. this odyssey had ignition switch replaced in 2004 at 71,000 miles now has 120,000 miles. *tr
Tl * the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. the contact stated that intermittently the vehicle will stall without any prior warnings. the vehicle was taken to dealer, for inspection. the technician concluded that the ignition switch failed. his vehicle was previously repaired according to recall # 02v120000 (electrical system; ignition: switch). however the repairs did not remedy the specified failures. the failure and current mileages were 218,000.
1999 honda odyssey. ignition switch failure. contacted honda and they told me it had already been addressed in 2002. i asked why wasn't it replaced with a switch that was of newer design and was told again that it has already been addressed. they will not replace. my complaint is that if they replace a recalled item with an item of the same defective design then are they honoring the recall? i would say no, they are only masking the problem without fixing it. *tr
While driving down the highway the instruments on the dash went to zero and the engine shut down followed by all of the warning lights illuminating and the engine restarting. this cycle was repeated several times over an approximate five mile stretch. shedding the electrical loads didn't seem to help the problem. the problem has returned on other occasions but is very intermittent. now the engine is developing a starting problem. the van starts but dies immediately when you release the key. it sometimes takes multiple attempts before the van will remain running once the key is released. i found a recall from honda for this issue. the faulty ignition switch was to be replaced with an improved issue for this very issue. i contacted sterling mccall honda in kingwood, tx to have the switch replaced. they informed me that my van has the new style switch already installed so they refuse to cover the replacement of the faulty switch. obviously the new switch that was supposed to fix this safety issue is not much better than the original. i feel that honda should continue to replace the switches until they are able to design a switch that remedies their design flaw. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving at an unknown speed, the contact noticed smoke coming from the steering column. all of the instrument panel lighting illuminated. while continuing to drive, the vehicle began to stall and jerk as if it would shut off. the contact was able to safely maneuver the vehicle to her destination. the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop and inspected by a technician, who determined that the ignition switch was failing and the wires were melting. the vehicle was repaired at the cost of $150. the contact called the honda manufacturer and was informed that no compensation or replacements would be made because the vehicle was previously repaired according to a recall. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the failure mileage was 142,150 and current mileage was 142,260.
The minivan stalls and losses power (engine turns off and lights go out on the dash) while driving on the road (intermittently). we have already done the wire hardness recall and the ignition switch recall. the symptom takes place every couple of days. i guess i need to take the minivan to the dealer again. what a lemon. i am very dissatisfied with the honda minivan. i would expect this issue from someone else but not from honda. my wife almost crashed the first time it happened. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle shut off without warning. the failure occurred frequently and the vehicle would restart. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic and the ignition switch was determined to be the cause of the failure. the dealer agreed with the mechanic and the vehicle was repaired at the owner's expense. the failure mileage was 143,500 and current mileage was 144,038.
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving various speeds, the vehicle sporadically stalled without warning. speed was not a factor at the time of the failure. the contact called the dealer in reference to nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) and they stated that the vin was excluded from the recall. the contact would be responsible for the repair costs. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. the failure mileage was 180,000 and current mileage was 185,000. updated 4/14/09 *cn updated 04/17/09.*jb
First incident occurred before stopping in an intersection, as this driver was applying brake the dashboard just flickered and the vehicle stalled and lost power while the key was still in the ignition switch and the vehicle was in drive gear position. the car behind us almost hit us. the van restarted when the gear was put on park and restarted. second incident occurred this same night, this driver was driving the vehicle at 35 mph when the key dashboard display flickered 3 times then the vehicle lost power and stalled. the engine was not running and driver unable to maneuver vehicle. we were lucky because i was able to pull over without us being hit from behind. we have owned this vehicle for almost five yes and this is the 1st time it happened at the same night. i am very concerned about this because this is the primary transport for my pregnant wife and my 2 kids. as far as i know as the dealer told me before my vehicle was part of a recall with regards to ignition failure 02v120000 and 03v423000. my question will be is the replacement part that they have put on was defective too or is this a new problem. what will be my course of action now? i'm planning to take this vehicle to the dealer tomorrow. my honda vehicle has always been service by honda. i would appreciate your reply. *tr
Engine stopped while driving on turnpike. restarted while trying to get off of the road. honda dealer replaced start switch. it was replaced at 65000 miles under recall. current mileage 127,000 miles. i guess that it has to be replaced every 60,000 miles or so. $385 to replace it this time. honda said that they would replace it only once. mechanic said that it is the same as the original. never improved upon. definitely a safety hazard. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. prior to the failure, a green key light symbol illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. the vehicle restarted normally and stalled again while driving. the dealer stated that they would diagnose the vehicle for a price. the diagnostic revealed that the harness needed to be replaced and may have caused the vehicle to stall. the srs air bag light illuminated and was repaired for free. currently, the ignition needs to be repaired at the contact's expense. the contact has scheduled an appointment to have the ignition repaired. the failure mileage was 103,000 and current mileage was 108,000.
My 1999 honda odyssey exhibited all the symptoms of the existing honda safety recall for ignition switch failure. my van stalled many times in traffic causing a road hazard. my van was originally repaired under this recall in may 2002 but, obviously, this repair did not correct the defect. honda has refused to cover the additional repair under the safety campaign stating they only cover one repair per vehicle. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving at any speed downhill, the van shuts off and restarts by the time it reaches the bottom of the hill. the failure occurs in any weather conditions. all other systems of the vehicle are affected during the failure, such as loss of power steering, brakes, and all other electrical systems. there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle is always able to be restarted once it shuts off. the dealer stated that the vehicle was repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) in 2002 and the contact purchased the vehicle in 2005; however, the failure persists. the failure mileage was 177,000.
Faulty ignition switch causes vehicle to stall. i called honda about this and they said that my particular 1999 honda odyssey was not on a recall for this. *tr
While moving the vehicle stalled and no longer could operate until stopped, put into park, and turned off and restarted. dealer explained that ignition switch of car had to be replaced. this ignition switch was already replaced in 2002 under honda recall and it failed again. ignition switch replace in 2008 was paid by owner, not honda. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey ex. while driving 35 mph on a clear day the contact smelled something burning and noticed smoke rising from the steering column. he stated that the instrument panel shut off and the lights dimmed. also , the vehicle began to thrust, jerk, and finally shut off. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. he stated that the engine sounded as if the battery was losing power. the vehicle was towed to his residence and was able to restart a few days later. the contact discovered recalls 00v0300 concerning electrical system:wiring:front underhood, and 03v423000 concerning electrical system :ignition :switch, and called the manufacturer. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was included in the abovementioned recalls. however, the first recall repair was performed in april 2001, and the second repair was performed on october 8, 2002. the contact informed the manufacturer that the vehicle had the same stalling failure noted in the recall. the manufacturer stated that the repair was completed by them. the contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer and was issued case number n012007-04-26-00304. in addition, the passenger's side sliding door failed, and could only be unlocked manually. the current mileage is 119,000, and failure mileage was 117,000.*ak
