On average, the 2012 Honda CR-V starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 40 936 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2012 Honda CR-V

2012 honda cr-v. when the vehicle is started, an abnormal loud rattling noise is heard coming from the engine. there are no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to honda city dealer located in levitown ny where it was diagnosed that the vtc actuator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired at a cost of $750 to the owner. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no assistance was provided to repair the defective part. the noise appeared when the car was only 3 years old and the dealer was contacted by phone but said there was no permanent fix yet and to call back when the noise got louder. the failure mileage was approximately 51,000 which was less than the warranty milage of 60,000. honda is aware of this defective part that can cause further engine damage or failure but no recall has been issued. poor response by honda.

Vtc actuator grinding on cold start. reported to honda. paid to have it replaced out of pocket at a cost of $1443.83 on 9/24/18 at 111,863 miles. at 122,000 miles started having high oil consumption. after several misdiagnosis by hare honda, determined same issue as 2011 tsb a12-089 problem with sticking piston rings. requires full engine rebuild quoted at $2000. if not fixed can cause engine failure.

Grinding noise when cold starting and it has begun to stall the engine.

Faulty vtc actuator, grinding noise on starting the car everyday in the mornings. dealer have a $600.00 estimate to have it fixed and not covered under standard warranty. honda is aware of this issue and no recall has been issued.

Rattle noise on cold start up. vtc actuator replaced under warranty and now same problem again after 10;000 miles. from my reading and speaking to several auto mechanics, this is a common problem with this model of car and it seems like honda of america has not taken responsibility for addressing this problem adequately. i think a recall of this engine or an extension of the warranty should be required.

Prior to accident, vehicle had no issues and was serviced routinely. there were 2 individuals in the car and accident took place on a two lane state road approximately 2 miles from residence. the weather was hot and sunny on the mid-afternoon of the accident. driver noticed sputtering in the car and decided to u-turn to return to residence. as driver continued, sputtering worsened and somebody drove alongside and yelled that the vehicle appeared to be leaking gas. very soon after, while car was driving at 5mph, the car had an explosion and flames came through the passenger window. both driver and passenger were burned and medevac'd to local burn center. passenger received severe 2nd and 3rd degree burns on upper half of body. driver also received burns but not as severe. each managed to exit vehicle before the being engulfed by flames. vehicle is completely unrepairable and destroyed. fire marshal report as further details on possible origins of the car fire.

Grinding noise upon cold start. this issue started at least two years ago. did not happen on every start. asked dealership what it might be and i was told it was nothing. over the past year, noise happens religiously every time there is a cold start. dealership now says it's the vtc actuator and i am now past my warranty. it appears that a tsb was issued march 2016. why has no recall been made since this is a widespread issue?

Engine- purchased car in aug 2013 in winter that year i heard a loud grinding noise at morning starts when it was cold. took to honda dealer service who said it was probably vtc actuator. had to bring it back and leave over nght so they could hear it in am. of course the night i took it wasnt cold enough next am to make noise. took it 3 other times since all to honda dealer plus reported it each time i took in for service. never able to hear noise because too warm. still making noise today, 5 years later. warranty expired. very aggravating. electrical- battery has been replaced 3 times in 5 years, this year it was in janurary. something is draining it when the vehicle is even turned off and not running. lights have never been left on to run battery down. each time i have to get a new battery the sales person says the battery is too new to be drained already and there must be something draining it. honda dealer says they would need to have the vehicle there when the problem happened to find the problem. they said that the first 2 times i took it there the third time i didnt waste my time going there.

Engine rattles at cold start up. per service bulletin the vtc actuator is faulty and needs to be replaced with an upgraded part. this is the second time i will need to have it replaced. i shouldn't have to pay for this repair again.

We had a direct deer hit on i81 north in grantville pa. the direct hit was taken on the driver's side of the vehicle at 65 mph in highway driving. the airbag only deployed on the passenger side not on the driver's side. this seemed very odd to us. either both air bags should have deployed or neither airbag should have deployed in this accident. pictures are attached. i reported this to american honda, but they refused to investigate it and i had to beg them for an email address to send the pictures to. given their attitude, i felt i needed to report this accident to nhtsa. my car was totaled by new jersey manufacturer's insurance co.

Car in motion at approximately 45 mph on city street, when suddenly all power is lost. engine still running but no power when pushing accelerator pedal. this lasts from 5 to 10 seconds. then suddenly kicks in again. no check engine light appears. talked to honda about this and they said they have never heard of this happening. this has happened four times in this vehicle.

The vtc is making a rattling noise on a cold start up. this started out of nowhere and has not gone away. my car is parked in a garage at home and is parked outside at work but will do the same no matter what.

Every time i start a car i hear a grinding sound that lasts for 1-2 seconds and then stops. this is how it sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr20baoxbo8 this happens to honda cr-v's and accords with 2.4l 4 cyl. engines. the issues known as "vtc actuator assembly" - https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/ucm501009/sb-10041669-6712.pdf this is a huge problem for vehicles assembled between 2010 - 2016 and it should be a recall to fix the issue. as of now honda is not admitting that there is the problem.

When pressing the accelerator the vehicle hesitates before accelerating. this creates a hazardous condition when pulling out into traffic. vehicle feels like it is going to stall out.

I bought a used crv from the dealer in manchester nh. it is not under warantee anymore. the vtc actuator is bad and i need it replaced. it was recalled by honda. they are telling me its only up to 60 k miles. i bought it with that many on it.

Wife pulled car into attached garage, has stopped, needed to move up 1-2 feet, with foot on brake the car suddenly overpowered the brakes, smashed a cabinet in garage, hit inside wall, broke studs, and moved others damage both wall in garage and inside home, there were marks on garage floor per insurance adjuster said, not skid marks instead it was from front wheels spinning as it pushed a cabinet into and through 2 walls - took to dealeer, honda corporate was involved, before honda people we involved, they could not duplicate the situaltion, (note this is the second time this happened other was parking in outside parking lot, was able to stop but barely) it was swept under the rug, by honda, corporate, factory rep never even bothered to call us. wife was accident free 50+ years, she is short about 5 foot, drives with right foot only. there is an engineer or someone back in 2012 already 136,000 reported accidents across all makes and models, suv and foreign cars were the worst, 92% were at slow speed mostly parking, the one thing in common is everything is electronic, batteries are smaller and at low speeds all the power being used causes a spike to the computer, which controls speed, no cables or rods to be pushed on gas pedal anymore, to make it worse another car same model, year, make in on your site as id 10794564 look at vin # almost identical. with all this happening it appears the manufactures are not bothering to find a common cause for this, saves them money, but the damages, injuries, and deaths related to this problem has never been found in 10+ years

The engine makes a rattling noise when the car is turned on in cold weather, usually when it is first turned on in the morning. i live on the gulf coast, so it really doesn't even get that cold down here, but i have noticed this on multiple "cold" mornings (temperatures maybe in the 40s). i noticed several other people have reported this problem. i don't know if it is causing damage to the car, but it does not sound good.

2012 honda cr-v vtc actuator recall.....whenever i start my car i hear a grinding noise which i have been told is the vtc actuator. the noise is very annoying it makes loud loud noise every time the car is started.

Please research this issue with 2012 honda cr-v's as i am not the only one with this issue and i believe it's a serious safety issue: the vehicle shakes, vibrates or wobbles when accelerating in low gears. it stops when easing up on the gas pedal. it typically occurs when the vehicle shifts (automatic transmission) between the 1st and 2nd gears. the whole car shakes. the only way to stop it is by removing foot from gas pedal or accelerating car quickly to higher speed. the issue affects the ability to safely accelerate to proper speed. begins when accelerating from a stopped position all the way up until car reaches about 40-45 miles per hour. occurs on all types of road conditions but is very pronounced when driving on a flat surface. i have taken my vehicle to be serviced at the honda of the avenues and i was told it was resolved. it hasn't been resolved and i have been traveling so i haven't had the chance to take it back. i am up to date with all my oil changes and maintenance. i see that i am not the only one with this issue with my 2012 honda crv as others with the same vehicle are complaining online. this should be part of a recall service.

Problem with cooling system. the 2012-2016 cr-v models have issues with the heater core becoming clogged, and not generating enough heat for proper defrosting, defogging and cabin heating. honda is aware of this problem and it is wide-spread enough for them to issue technical service bulletin #14-063 (see attached) for flushing of cooling system, at a cost to the car owner of approximately $470.00. this problem seems to be caused by factory-installed coolant (this is not scheduled to be replaced until 105k miles). since our cr-v still had the factory coolant and all related components, and could be safety-related due to ineffective defrosting and defogging, should these be subject to a recall at honda's expense, and those owners who paid for this to be corrected be reimbursed?

There's a grinding noise that follows the start of the engine. this issue began 2 years ago during the winter months. took it to honda to see what was wrong. they weren't able to recreate the sound and sent me on my way. it's now doing it all of the time. i haven't taken it to honda again, but i will when i have the time and money to fix it. initial viewing of this site shows a lot of the same issue. haven't done any further research to see if the issue has been resolved or handled by hond. i will once i finish this post. hopefully, honda is doing or will do the right thing and recall vehicles affected by this issue.

After owning for 5 years, during winter months a loud rattle sounded each and every time the motor was turned on. it did not matter if engine was cold or not. i took to dealer who said for $699 they would try and fix but no guarantees and could still exist. i spoke to different mechanic who said if i continued without getting it repaired, it could ruin the engine. i called the corp office to be told that there was not a recall because they did not have a replacement. i was forced to sell the car. i am looking for compensation

Heater is blowing very cold air (28 deg) on driver side, (130 deg) on passenger side. this condition is when the vehicle is stationery, it becomes much colder when in motion. there was a tsb created november 2014, regarding this problem.

Vehicle makes a loud noise when starting in cold weather

Engine rattles on cold start. ties to their service bulletin 09-010 issue. this was reported to suburban honda novi 7/18/2016 when car mileage was 59716. car was returned indicating this issue could not be replicated. service buletin dates back to march 17 2016. how did suburban honda not recognize this as the issue when i first reported to them on 7/18/2016? today 8/16/17 this issue has coumponded. every time car is started after kept idle of more than an hour the rattle sound is real lud. local technician, paul's automotive said yesterday, it is real impoartant it be looked at by honda. so takin it to suburban honda today 8/16/17.

Engine rattles at cold start-up - vtc actuator needs replacement. the honda dealer (criswell honda, germantown md) doing the maintenance says that i have gone past the warranty. but i have been there multiple times for service before and mentioned about the issue. they did not fix it or explained to me the issues. they are charging me $800 now for this. based on current search in google, this is what i find. please help honda tsb number:a09-010.v4 nhtsa number:10087883tsb date:march 17, 2016 failing component: engine (pws) summary: service bulletin - replace the vtc actuator if the engine rattles loudly for 2 seconds during cold start-up.

Our car started vibrating during light acceleration between 20-30 mph just over 40,000 miles (warranty). this vibration is very noticeable around town while running errands. the whole car shakes! if pushed hard on the accelerator the issue does not happen, for instance when going on the freeway. we found a service bulletin #15-086 dated august 18, 2016 thanks to our mechanic, currently feb. 2017. however when we called the dealership where the vehicle was purchased, we were told that honda has taken the service bulletin down because they found the recommended software update and replacement of the a/t fluid, was not found to solve the problem. so he said there was nothing to be done to fix this issue. they know there is a problem, and yet no solution. so here we are stuck with a vehicle that we bought for the honda brand and yet if we want to sell it, test driving it will reveal its major issue and we will not get blue book value for it. bad return on investment. so really i will have to drive this car around, vibrating all over town, even though my family has now outgrown it, and not be able to upgrade fairly to a bigger car. i wanted a pilot, but honda's lack of concern over this apparent issue does not instill buyers trust in them again. more like buyers remorse.

on cold startups there is a grinding noise coming from the engine compartment which lasts for a few seconds. the grinding noise is heard usually after the car is left idle overnight but happens to a lesser extent while the car is being used. i took it to the dealer. their mechanic identified it as the vtc actuator. they said that this is common and that honda has issued a service bulletin and will be issuing a recall soon. honda knows of this problem (bulletin:09-010). they said that it can wait for the recall to be issued. my problem is that my warrinty may now expire and a recall could not ever be issued.

There is a known issue with the vtc on many hondas from 2008-2014. honda is only covering the issue under the standard warranty though it is a known issue.

Low heat from the drivers side vent. had to have the heater core flushed. its a known issue with this car and there is an official honda service bulletin (14-063) for this problem. had to pay $450 to have this fixed.

Heater/defroster on driver's side not putting out warm air. windows not being defrosted - safety issue. honda has long recognized this problem and issued a service bulletin 14-063 but refused to correct with charging several hundred dollars. this should be fixed no-charge as it is a safety issue.

Grinding noise at cold start.

Grinding/rattling engine noise on first start-up only. appears to be the vtc actuator problem. happens only in cold weather. almost bought a toyota rav4 instead. maybe i should have bought the toyota?

Each time i start an engine when it still cold it has a rattle loudy noise. when honda is going to recall for this issue?

Sudden acceleration: when foot on brake, the engine surges

Grinding noise occurs on 1st start up when car is cold and occasionally during the day. we took it to honda dealership on 11/5/2015 and they say it is the vtc actuator and no repairs will be done at this time. we took it to pasadena honda on 1/25/16 and the service manager said they honda would email us when they had a fix. i called honda customer service and filed a complaint. they said honda was working on a second solution.the noise continues to worsen. they said it wasn't a safety issue or wouldn't hurt the engine(?)

Starting car sound is a grinding sound. tends to happen in the morning when i first start it up for the day. i think honda should replace the cam actuator gear assembly. what else is getting ruined on my car when no action has been taken place by honda?

Rattle/grinding noise on cold starts. at first, it was only on very cold mornings, which we don't usually have here in the south (alabama); however, today, it does it every time you start the car. it's a frightening noise that sounds like it's tearing up the engine. there are videos and hundreds of complaints online about this issue. i have read something about a class-action lawsuit, as well, although i was never notified of that.

When i "cold" start my car (mornings, after 6 hours of nonuse) there is a loud grinding/screeching noise that lasts a few seconds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3z00ln1dd8). the schaumburg (il) dealership says honda is aware of this problem and has not provided a solution to them yet. i contacted them on march 13, 2015, regarding this. they provided the same answer today...while the problem/noise persists. i am hoping this complaint will help force honda develop a (vtc actuator?) solution and provide it to honda drivers.

A grinding noise occurs upon starting which lasts for a few seconds. i had asked about it on more than one occasion when bringing my car to the honda dealership for service. a service manager captured it on video and said there was not any effect to the vehicle. my warranty is now expired and i imagine trying to sell the vehicle in the future will be a problem when someone hears that noise.

On cold starts here a load scrapping sound that lasts for 2-3 seconds. never hear it on warm starts.

Purchased a honda crv 2012 from a dealership but they brought the car to me for a test drive which resulted in my not hearing the grinding noise on startup. the engine makes a grinding sound every time you start it (cold starts...when i start it in the morning it makes the sound and if i start it within 15-20 minutes after the initial start it is much milder of a noise.) the honda mechanic said they could not fix it (still under warranty at the time) because honda has not done a "software update." i now see, after researching the issue, that this is an ongoing problem with honda crv's that has not been rectified.

Loud metallic rattle noise on cold start-up. honda dealer found honda service bulletin 09-010 issued, but no fix for this problem has been issued to date.

We have a problem with noise when starting in cold weather. there is a hesitation sometimes when driving like not getting fuel.

Engine makes rattling or grinding noise on startup, usually in the morning or when the car has set for at least 6 to 8 hours.

Cold start of engine causes loud grinding noise only 2 and a half years of ownership 50,000 miles looking online it is not a unique problem and is an engine design flaw. honda only says it's working on the problem but doesn't have a fix yet. they say the official problem is that the vtec actuator is defective. given the number of posts asking about this problem i would assume the company would work on it especially if it is a problem with the engine.

This is in reference to sb-09-010 that hundreds if not thousands of cr-v owners are experiencing spanning from 2012-2014 model years (other honda's such as the accord are also experiencing this issue all the back to 2008). starting around 40,000 miles (after our 3 year/36k warranty expired of course) our vehicle makes a loud grinding noise on cold startups (after vehicle has been sitting for 2 or more hours). the longer the vehicle sits the louder the grinding noise is for the first startup. honda has known about this problem for many years now (research it and you'll see for yourself) and has been complacent in coming up with a fix. how am i supposed to sell a vehicle that sounds like this? no one in their right mind would buy a vehicle that sounds like the engine is knocking or rattling. where are the fixes for this honda? honda, you're rapidly losing faith in your brand and your customer base is diminishing. you've already lost me as a customer (my wife is still being loyal since this cr-v is hers) and i've jumped ship to another brand of car that starts with an "s" and ends in a "ubaru". . at 50,000 miles my 7 months pregnant wife got stranded 200 miles from home because the alternator decided to crap out on her which resulted in the battery dying. luckily a good samaritan gave her car a jump start and she reached her destination. getting the alternator fixed which was diagnosed as something internal in the alternator, cost us over $600 to fix on a 3 year old car. an alternator should not be dying on a 50,000 mile or 3 year old car. we will be filing formal complaints with honda customer service in regards to the alternator and the loud engine rattle. honda's quality in workmanship has drastically declined. i am through with buying any more honda's. goodbye honda!

Loud noise on start-up all the time (doesn't matter if cold or hot). took to dealer, peoria, il - 12/30/2014 suspected vtc actuator. dealer said could not duplicate, after i even recorded the noise. brought back in april 2015, insisted they listen while i was there. diagnosed vtc actuator. said honda had a tech bulletin, said they know about the problem but will not allow dealer to fix it. told to check back again soon. i checked back over several months. same answer. there is no fix, honda knows about the problem. how can a manufacturer know there is a problem, and say they can't fix it. i can't resale the vehicle with this noise. the noise is very loud and embarrassing on every start up. dealer refuses to fix or provide any solution. this seems to be a problem with different honda vehicles, and consumers can't get the problem fixed.
