Letter from senator klobuchar on behalf of constituent re 2004 gmc yukon, navigation disc (cd) issues (attn: cacje henderson). *smd

While backing out of the garage, it was observed that i was traveling at a rate of 120mph. i took my 2004 yukon to the garage only to find out that the instrument panel needs to be replaced (at a cost of $800.00). the mechanic stated that this is becoming a common occurrence with the 2004 yukon and that this has not been recalled. my question to gmc is, how many deaths does it take to get a recall? this is a very serious safety concern and should be addressed as so. i bought my truck used, and the warranty is no longer valid. my sister owns a 2005 yukon that she just purchased (still under warranty) and her instrument panel was just replaced last week. *tr

Inaccurate speedometer readings including complete failure of the speedometer on the instrument panel. driving at highway speeds in excess of 60mph, speedometer showed 10mph. *tr

After engine is warmed up, usually after driving just a few miles, there is a loud banging noise that appears to be coming from the muffler. it happens approx every 8-12 seconds with the truck running or off. i took it to the dealer and they said that they didn't hear it, although the sales manager that sold me the vehicle heard it. they said to bring it back later and that there is a bulletin out on it but gmc has not released the parts so they can't fix it even if they did hear it. when i am sitting next to another vehicle, for example at a light, it sounds like something is hitting their vehicle and is coming from mine. with road rage being what it is these days i am afraid that someone will not understand that gmc has "not released the parts" to fix it.*ak
