Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD

I parked my vehicle and upon exiting observed fluid drips on the pavement. i touched and smelled the fluid and determined it to be brake fluid. i then observed fluid dripping from beneath the drivers side passenger compartment. i immediately checked the brake fluid res. and observed it to be below the 1/2 point. i was approximately 4 miles from my home and decided to take the back road which required less braking. the fluid was still leaking upon my arrival home. i should note there was no fluid leaking prior to departing my residence. i did notice the pedal travel to have increased and the feel to be slightly spongy as i drove down a steep grade requiring significant braking to maintain the 35 mph limit into havre de grace. the vehicle (2001 gmc 2500hd) is not driven much and mostly for local (<15 miles) travel. the front rotors and calipers have been replaced and the lines bled approximately 2 months ago. there is rust evident on the brake lines. i might argue that due to the vehicle age this is to be expected; however, the extremely low mileage is equivalent to approximately three (3) years worth of driving. having owned many vehicles, this is the first to have had such a problem. i now have the unscheduled expense of replacing the brake lines. i am lucky not to have been further from home where i might have experienced total brake failure possibly causing a crash.*jb

2001 gmc 2500 sierra with 50 k miles, total brake failure!!!, this has happened before 2 times, first under warranty (they balked at fixing) replaced all rotors and calipers, then one month after warranty was out, failure again brake line corrosion from master cylinder to transmission (never seen that before!) cost $250 to fix, then the line behind that, under the fuel tank at 50k miles while 800 miles away in maine on vacation!! nearly killed us! (and others) estimated cost to repair another $500... the entire frame and under carriage is rusted to hell! this truck is washed and waxed regularly, and was supposed to be under coated! i have had both front wheel bearing fail at 21k and then again at 35k miles with antilock brake failure as well both times, the bearings $300 apiece and dealer installed.. what next? transmission will not shift when cold, below 50 degrees!! estimated cost to fix this over $1500 just to find out what is wrong.. this truck cost over fifty thousand dollars new and has spent more time parked getting fixed then driving!!! help us please!!!!!!!!! *tr

2001 gmc sierra 2500 hd diesel with allison trans, while on vacation 800 miles away lost all brakes (front and rear) nearly killing people. found brake line bust at the fuel tank (which was full) excessive corrosion on all brake lines and under carriage of this truck less than 50k miles. this is the third time first had all rotors fail at 20k, dealer reluctantly replaced only by forcing the issue (under warranty) then at 36k line bust at master cylinder (front and rear) corrosion, $500 , then the line after that one to the proportioning valve another 500 to fix, the front hubs replaced two times at 300 each bad wheel bearings and corroded hubs, now rear line at the tank area, truck has 49k miles never in salt/snow, washed reg. yet underside looks like a junker. this truck has been a disaster since day one! antilock brakes 3x, rotors 2x calipers once, brake lines 3 x and this is before 40k miles!!! , only thing that saved us from the mortuary was fast acting on my part , and throwing it in one on the trans, which i suspect is next. who do you have to run over before there is a recall? gm is junk! i suggest all gm truck owner check under for corrosion as they use crap material in making their trucks.. heavy duty my [xxx] ! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

When applying the brakes at low speeds the abs kicks on. i have researched this and there has been a recall from gm but my vin number is not on the recall it falls under the year make and model and i only have 48,000 miles on the truck. the bulletin number is 05068c from gm. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 gmc sierra 2500 hd. the vehicle was repaired per recall 05v379000 component: service brakes, hydraulic: antilock on october, 25, 2007; however, the failure recurred on august 19, 2009. while driving 45 mph, he noticed that the abs system activated without warning. the contact was required to pay $300 to have the vehicle repaired. report 71-752849960 was filed with the manufacturer who confirmed that they would not assist with the repair because the vehicle was too old. the failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 45,100.

I use my truck to pull a 5th wheel camper. when i started to check it out this year, i noticed a funny shift pattern and a growl with temporary brake loss at approx. 4 mi. pre hr or less. i took the truck in for repair and they sent me to a gm dealer to have the tcm reflashed. that fixed the shift harshness. after leaving dealership i noticed the growling again. it is not every time i apply the brakes, but i am afraid that i will end up loosing the brakes long enough to hit another vehicle. after doing extensive internet studies i found that this vehicle should be included in a recall that is for the exact same symptoms. i called 2 dealerships but was told that my vin was not part of the recall. i was told that they were recalled because of defective parts used only on specific vin numbered vehicles. i asked that if this is true then why is my part failing in the exact same manner if it is not defective. i was told by the service tech. that this was a good question and he would call gm to see if my truck qualified. apparently not or i wouldn't be filing this. my research also showed another complaint exactly the same as mine on this site (november 10, 2006 odi id number : 10173313). please let me know what to do from here. *tr

Dt: the contact owns a 2001 gmc 2500 pick up truck, and the brakes have completely deteriorated. the vehicle had only 18,000 miles. while driving heard a buzzing noise from the back of the vehicle. the consumer continued driving the vehicle home, and later had the vehicle towed to a service dealer. the service dealer stated the vehicle needed to have brake pads, rotors, and calipers on the back. on the front of the vehicle the rotors will need to be turned. the abs front speed sensor was defective. the service dealer had to replace the abs front speed sensor, replace at least one rotor on the back, a back caliper, and the front rotors will need to be turned, and may have to replace the front brake pads. *ak

Abs will activate when coming to a stop at approximately 5 mph. rotors and pads were replaced 1 year ago and dealer paid half under warranty. i'm now told by a reputable mechanic that the speed sensor gear is rusted and the whole hub will have to be replaced. *jb

Vehicle is having trouble stopping when the brakes are applied at various speeds. took vehicle to dealer for check up and results indicated that the rotors cracked and fell apart. *ak

Abs brake control activates as truck comes to a stop at low speed. *ak

I was driving my 2001 gmc hd pickup when i lost power steering and power brakes at the same time due to a shaft in the power steering pump breaking. the power steering and brakes are both driven by the same pump. the repair shop indicated this was not the first time they have seen this problem and the shaft was a "poor" design because it narrows at one end which is where they have seen them break in similar vehicles. *jb

2001 gmc sierra with 6065 miles that is 6 thousand. 65 miles ... total brake failure. rotors and brake pads totally shot.. not drivable!!!! close to killing someone, (school bus full of kids) made it to dealer, told the bad news, unbelievable!! 40 thousand dollar truck with 6065 actual miles and no frigging brakes!!!! repair bil over 1500 dollars!! gmc says sucks to be me.. no help, no fix, not driveable. what if someone was actually killed??? would gmc care? no!!!!! btw this vehical is owned by an 85yr old man drives it to store, and dr.'s office. help help help....*ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 gmc sierra 2500 hd. the contact while driving at 50 mph, the brakes failed and would not engage. the contact proceeded to drive through a busy intersection and shifted into first gear. the vehicle would not stop and he then proceeded to drive into a parking lot, purposely hitting against the curb to stop the vehicle. the contact found that the undercarriage, frame, front and rear brake lines were severely corroded. the dealer advised bringing the vehicle in for diagnostic testing and possible repairs. the contact stated he had experienced failures with the brakes since the date of purchase. the dealer previously replaced and under coated the rear brake lines to prevent rusting and corrosion but to no avail. the manufacturer was contacted, but did not offer any assistance. the failure mileage was 29,000 and the current mileage was 50,000. updated 11/12/10 *cn the consumer stated the cost to repair the brake lines was $3,000. updated 11/24/10
