We have classified the 159 complaints from 2005 GMC Envoy about FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE into the following categories.
Fuel gauge suddenly stopped working properly after fill up. moves from empty, to 1/2 full, to 1/4 full to empty, back to 1/4 full, back to empty. i can't determine how much gas in may tank. this could cause me to unexpectedly run out of gas while driving in traffic and cause an accident. this is apparently a very common problem in gmc envoy and chevrolet trailblazers. there is no warning in the owners manual or suggestion that the gauge and sensors be replaced. i understand that this is an expensive repair - between $600 and $900.
2005 gmc envoy xl has several issues with the instrument cluster. the battery and temperature gauges are reading off the scale past their maximum readings. it should also be noted that this vehicle also had issues with the fuel gauge sending unit and the engine thermostat. *tr
Gas gauge does not work. *tr
Fuel level sensor reads full and goes to empty back and forth and turns on check engine light . this occures with any amount of fuel in tank full to empty. has not been repaired as gm will not stand behind parts . my concerne is with check engine light on how will i know if something else is to fail , such as brakes ext. talked to gm complaint dept. and was told they had no knowledge . yea right. seems most gm suv's are having the same problem . *tt
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 gmc envoy. the contact stated after refueling the fuel tank to the full capacity level, the fuel gauge would register an empty fuel tank. the inaccurate reading was consistent. the independent mechanic was notified of the faulty fuel tank and they advised that the vehicle be taken in for diagnosis. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the failure mileage was approximately 66,000. updated 06/17/11 *bf updated 06/30/11
I own a 2005 gmc envoy. while driving 45 mph, the i noticed that the fuel light illuminated on the instrument panel. this indicated that the vehicle was low on fuel, but in reality, the vehicle was full of gasoline. i noticed that when the fuel tank is full, the gauge will display half of a tank. when half of a tank of fuel is in the vehicle, the gauge displays that it is empty. the vehicle has not been taken to the dealer for inspection and no repairs were performed. i am in the process of notifying the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 76,000 and current mileage was 77,500. *tr
Fuel level sensor failure. fuel gauge fails to go past 1/4 tank. *tr
2005 gmc envoy gas gauge reads empty when recently filled up and constantly fluctuates up and down. apparently the fuel tank level sensor is defective and could result in the vehicle unknowingly running out of fuel, stalling and being rear ended by another vehicle. *tr
Fuel gauge does not work correctly. the reading on the fuel gauge does not reflect the amount of gas in the tank. gauge mostly reads empty even after filling up. sometimes it will show there is more gas than is actually in the tank.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 gmc envoy. the contact stated that the vehicle fuel gauge was defective. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or inspection or repairs and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 75,000. the vin was not available.
I was getting my tank filled with gas and the fuel gauge needle pegged out past full, then bounced down to empty. it did this three times then went back to full. since then it has continued to bounce around. the only way we knew if we had enough gas was to fill it and use the trip meter. the fuel gauge has ceased to move at all since april 2011. the check engine light has been on continuously as well since the incident. i love the vehicle but it is a major pain to keep track of the fuel when 3 people in the household rely on it. i looked online to see if there was a recall, only to learn this is a common complaint and nothing is being done about it. i priced a new cluster and it was over $500. needless to say we still have to keep track of the fuel with our trip meter. gm should step up to the plate and fix this issue. they had no problem taking a bailout. my family has been buying gm products for years, however, no one in my family will ever own another gm product if they can't do the right thing for their consumers, and do it now. not 5 years from now!! *tr
The fuel gauge indicated empty after filling up the tank with 20 gallons. the gauge continued to read empty and the check engine light came on. i have read that this is a common issue for this vehicle. it is obvious this is a manufacturer problem that needs recalled and fixed. it is unsafe to drive the vehicle if you don't know the amount of fuel you have. *tr
I own a 2005 gmc envoy and for the last two months have been dealing with a faulty fuel gauge....i saw online that a good number of other gm owners are having the same issue. my gauge just keeps reading emplty tank......even when totally filled, will reset to read quarter of tank of gas when it's still just about a full tank of fuel. either bad sensor or brain box......made in china!!! any help ..[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
The fuel gauge on my 2005 gmc envoy reads empty and the warning light comes on when there is plenty of gasoline in the vehicle. i can fill the vehicle up, or only put $20 in, and the fuel gauge will still fluctuate between empty and the amount of actual gas in the vehicle. it reads empty most of the time. this is very frustration as a driver never really knows how much gasoline they have in their tank.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 gmc envoy xlt. the contact stated the fuel gauge would display an inaccurate empty reading after refueling the vehicle. the dealer previously repaired the fuel floater valve in 2009 for the exact failure. the vehicle was taken to the dealer once again who stated that the vehicle was not covered under warranty any repairs would be at the contacts expense. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000.
Fuel gauge is faulty. will not record exact capacity of fuel in tank. this lead to the vehicle running out of gas during operation. avoided a crash, just barely.
On 1/31/2011 my 2005 gmc envoy showed my gas was down to a quarter of a tank. i stopped to fill up before a snow storm came in and put 16 gallons of unleaded fuel into my tank. immediately after my gas gauge went to empty and my gas light came on. it went up to a quarter of a tank and then went back down again. it is still showing empty, with the gas light on, and i know it has a full tank of gas. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 gmc envoy. the contact stated that the fuel gauge malfunctioned and would not move whether the fuel tank was empty or full to capacity. the contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer for repairs or diagnostic testing. the contact stated that the faulty fuel gauge could potentially cause the vehicle to run out of fuel without knowing and could cause a crash. the failure mileage was 50,000.
My fuel gauge stopped working 8 months ago, took to gmc dealer for service estimate. service manager said these fuel gauges always go out on envoys and the cost to repair was $578.00 (plus tax) - i choked and did not get repaired. 3 months later after trying to operate the vehicle without the fuel gauge - it became a nightmare to know if we had gas in the vehicle or not, i took it to an independent repair shop and they said "we see this fuel gauge problem all the time on the envoys"... they said the gmc parts were a rip-off and expensive, they would have to use gmc parts for the fuel gauge and they quoted $408.00 (plus tax) for the repair. the service manager for the repair shop said he could not understand why they have not had a recall on this since they have seen hundreds of gmc's with the same problem. he said we may want to wait on the repair to see if gm has a recall. on august 30, i received a written notification from gmc stating an issue with envoys and the fuel level sensor failure problem; however, gmc stated they would only cover 50% of the cost of repair. what a joke, 50% of a $600 repair bill for a problem they admit in writing is a scam to try and get as many people to pay for the repair ($300) before the gov't. mandates a recall. i called gmc and requested a 100% paid repair and they refused. i will be glad to forward the "fuel sensor failure" letter if you need. can you please help? the are several hundred thousand owners of gmc envoys that would be very appreciative - thank you in advance... *tr *kb
My complaint as with thousands of others......if gmc is acknowledging that they are responsible for the faulty gas sensors, then why do i have to be responsible for half of the bill to correct it ? my car cannot pass my states emissions testing, because as long as the check engine light is on, it will continue to fail...i don't have the money to pay for the repairs. i want gmc to take responsibility for the entire bill...not half !! *tr
As i was driving down the interstate i noticed that my fuel gauge started moving back and forth repeatedly. originally it always said that i had a full tank of gas, but now it tends to read that i am almost out of gas even when i have just filled up.
Gmc envoy. gas gauge does not work causing the car to run out of gas often in cold weather. car would not start several times and ran out of gas on highway. *tr
Fuel gauge problems....my fuel gauge has been floating from 1/2 a tank to empty for the past few weeks and now it the fuel light just stays on even when there is gas in the car. after running for a while the gauge will say there is gas and then it will go back down to empty. *tr
My husband filled the envoy with gas, and when we drove off we noticed the gas gauge was reading empty. we thought that maybe the pump was defective and we hadn't actually pumped gas, so we drove a few miles down the road to another gas station to see if we could get more gas. we were only able to pump less than a gallon, so we figured out the gauge wasn't reading correctly. after driving about 45 minutes the gauge slowly moved from empty to half full, would drop back to empty at random points (sometimes while stopped, sometimes while driving). ever since this time our gauge has fluctuated wildly, reading empty the majority of the time, but occasionally moving about from a quarter full to half then back to empty. we have not attempted a fix as we cannot afford anything extra at this point due to my husband being diagnosed with a terminal disease and the resulting medical bills piling up. *tr
One day i filled up my gas tank and it read empty when i drove away. it has read empty ever since with the exception of moving slightly above e for a few mininute while driving or after filling the tank again. i have seen all the complaints on here and am hoping for a recall. i fill up every other day just to be sure i don't run out of gas. this first happened about 6 months ago. my envoy is a 2005 with about 85k miles.
My 2005 gmc envoy's fuel gauge has failed. it now reads as "empty", no matter how much fuel is in the tank. to my knowledge, there is no easy or inexpensive fix for this problem. *tr
I own a 2005 gmc envoy that is having a known problem with the gas gauge and the sender unit. the check engine light also comes on. apparently numerous customers have been experiencing this same issue on their gm suvs. there should be a recall to fix these known manufacturer faulty workmanship issues. *tr
Defective gas gauge in 2005 envoy, only has 56,000 miles on it. gauge bounces erratically, and even after filling up the tank the gauge shows empty. problem just started last week and now happens daily - there is no reliable way to tell how much gas i actually have. nothing has been done to correct the problem, but i noticed on the internet that this is a wide-spread problem for this vehicle. *tr
The fuel gauge is inoperable due to the failure of the fuel sending unit. this is a common issue in the 2004 -2007 gmc envoy, chevy trailblazers and buick ranier. i know at least 4 other people who have experienced this issue. the dealer states that this is not a class action issue but to many comments are on the internet. the vehicle will stall at intersections and parking lots when proceeding through the intersection after being stopped. i contacted gm customer service and they stated that this is not a recall issue with the gm products. gm should be recall all vehicles and replace the fuel sending units at no charge or a reduced charge(cost of part or labor whichever is the least cost to the owner). the government has bailed them out now it is time for gm to do the right thing. also the instrument cluster stopped working correctly also and this resulted in speeding tickets. i have replaced with a remanufactured instrument cluster at the cost of $150.00 vs $600.00 with the local gm dealer.
2005 gmc envoy fuel light remains at a steady light when either fuel is low of full. this has been an ongoing problem since november 2010. *tr
The gas gauge is malfunctioning in my 2005 gmc envoy (vin # [xxx]) whereas it does not register the correct amount of gasoline.....i can fill it completely up and it will show past the empty mark and other times it will show 1/4 tank right after i fill up. i have ran out of gas 3x (fortunately not on a busy thoroughfare), but this can be extremely dangerous not ever knowing for certain how much gas i have in my tank or not. it is so annoying and frustrating and not only that but my gas gauge 'dings' off and on all the time indicating that i am low on fuel even after i have filled the vehicle up. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr
I bought a 2005 gmc envoy roughly 2 years ago with 67k and am experiencing issues with the fuel sensor. when i fill up with gas the sensor reads tank as empty directly after and seems to fluctuate to whatever it wants the rest of the time. upon researching the internet with this issue it appears that several other consumers are having the same problems and gmc is not willing to help because it's not a safety risk. i personally do see this as a safety risk, if you don't pay proper attention you could run out of gas and be stranded anywhere. when i found the link to this website and form and thought it was worth a shot to hopefully get this issue resolved for myself and the many others that spend their hard earned money on these vehicles. *kb
The fuel tank level sensor is defective and could result in a subject vehicle running out of fuel, stall, and being rear ended by another vehicle. the fuel level sending unit has a variable resistor attached to a float inside the fuel tank. as you use fuel, the float changes position (downwards) causing the variable resistor to change value. the change in resistance causes a change in the voltage sent to the fuel gage. my p0463 error is saying that the variable resistor is showing high input, instead of a typical small value. this means that the variable resistor or something else inside the sender unit is causing the ecm to "see" an invalid voltage on the fuel gage circuit. if the voltage is too high then the resistance is too high. possibly a bad connection between the ecu and the sender or a grounding problem.
Filled vehicle with gas and the fuel gauge registered empty. fuel gauge no longer works. *kb
The fuel sensing system has failed. the first symptom was a fuel gauge registering 0 and a check fuel level message after i had just filled the tank. for a period of time, the gauge would slowly climb to slightly above half full, but often return to 0 with the message occurring whenever stopping the car or on engine startup. now the gauge seldom goes above a quarter full, even though i typically keep the tank more than half full. i am able to estimate fuel consumed using the trip odometer, but this is not satisfactory. this has been going on for a year and the dealer is unwilling to accept responsibility for fixing it. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 gmc envoy. the contact stated that after filling his gas tank, he noticed that the fuel gauge gave an incorrect reading; at times it would read full and on other occasions it would read empty when he filled up the tank. the vehicle had not been inspected by a dealer and had not been repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000. the vin was unavailable.
The fuel gage stopped working and the low fuel light stays on. the check engine light keeps going on and off the port to check engine code does not work. the inside courtesy lights stopped working one back up light will not work the left brake light gets no power and won't work. only 3 of the 5 speed settings on the fan work. gmc dealer says they can do nothing, and that they do not have other complaints on these problems. however i am able to find thousands of the same complaints online in various consumer sites. gmc won't even return my calls. *tr
My 2005 gmc envoy is doing the same thing with the fuel system. i will fill up & the gas gauge will tell me there is no gas in it until so many miles and it still wont tell me there is a full tank , it will just creep up a little. just from reading all the other complaints about the fuel system from 05 & 06 models there should be a recall before someone really gets hurt. *tr
The fuel system started to malfunction around the first week of sept 2010. i was going on vacation stopped to get gas, after filling up the gas gauge read empty and the warning light came on. after shutting the envoy off and restarting it the gauge seemed to work. as the days went on the gauge completely quit working and the low fuel light has remained on. i reset my trip meter after every fill up, how annoying. i am not the only consumer with this complaint. i rec'd a letter that gm states its the fuel level sensor. the only fix a new fuel pump from a dealer at 50% off? who can afford dealer prices? this is obviously a defect that gm is failing to own up to. any help would be appreciated. *kb
I have a 2005 gmc envoy xl-slt and the fuel gage has stop working properly i have no idea how much fuel is in the envoy i am afraid that it will cause a system failure and shut down in the highway unexpected and cause a collision, their needs to be a recall on these vehicles to have the problem fix from what i have read on the internet their are a lot of people having this problem . *tr
For the last few months my 2005 gmc envoy denali has had repeated problems with the fuel gauge. after re-fueling the vehicle, the gauge will go to empty and illuminate the empty tank warning light. the check engine light also comes on. within a few miles the fuel gauge will begin to fluctuate wildly for a period of time, making it impossible to know how much gas is in it. the fuel gauge sometimes begins to operate again after the car has been driven for a few days. car has become unsafe because it is difficult to determine how much fuel is in it and empty tank sensor "cries wolf." also, the fuel gauge has begun to register a full tank when really the gas tank is near empty. once you start driving the fuel gauge begins to fall slowly until about 10 minutes later it finally registers the proper gas level... i've thought my husband filled up the tank and almost run out of gas because the fuel gauge didn't tell me i was out of gas until i was on the highway stuck in traffic - away from a nearby gas station. the trip odometer is not an exact science so it cannot be relied upon. (mpg vary depending out temperature, city vs. highway miles, mph, etc). message boards show that this is a common problem and eventually lead to the car stalling unexpectedly, even during highway travel. see http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/gmc/envoy/fuel+system. I am the owner of a 2005 gmc envoy. on august 20, 2010, i took my car to fill up prior to taking a trip from maryland to virginia. once i filled up, got in the car and turned on the ignition, the gas gauge did not move from empty to full. as i continued to drive (somewhere around 60 miles) the gas gauge moved to 1/2,then a 1/4 tank. it has been all downhill since. i took the car to the dealer on 10/25/10 (mileage was at 77263) and was told that it would cost over $1000 to repair the sensor which they are stating as the issue. being out of warranty at this point, i have not had it repaired as i cannot afford this type of expense. i basically drive estimating my mileage after every fill up which is very dangerous. in december 2010, i got stranded because my car stalled on the entrance highway to i-95 without gas, thank god that i have aaa. now i hear that there is an investigation into the gmc envoy for this same exact problem. i have read several complaints from other owners regarding the same matter (see link below) http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/gmc/envoy/fuel+system i also saw an article at: (link below regarding your investigation http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110502/bs_nm/us_usa_autos_probes i contacted gmc who said that because the dealer identified the problem as a sensor issue (not a cluster issue) they can't help. please help us. gmc should not be allowed to get away with this. *tr
2005 gmc envoy the fuel gage reads "low fuel" even when the tank is full. i am a mother of four. i am constantly on the road with my children. i am very afraid of running out of gas while driving through an intersection or being stranded on the side of the road with my children. i cannot afford to pay for someone to 'figure out' what the problem is. i feel gmc should figure it out and fix it. i know i am not the only person with this problem. i have done lots of research on the internet and i have talked to many other envoy owners in my town with the same problem. *tr
2005 gmc envoy fuel gauge inaccuracies. hed to replace the fuel sensor. at dealership. had less than 50,000 miles on vehicle when the problem occurred. contacted gmc customer support to see if they would help with thecosts of repairing the vehicle. after 3 months of working with them they denied my request. had to pay for the diagnostics and theinstall of the part which came to approx. $450.00. *tr
Out of nowhere my front head lights went out. its not the fuse or the bulbs, both front low lights went out. the high beams work. there is no power going to the lights and i have to buy a new switch. i also had to replace the engine almost a year ago because the o rings went up. the gas gauge is broken and my passenger window will not go down. i feel so stuck with this car! *tr
Gas gauge failure - it's a dangerous situation causing stalling , after filling up tank gauge registers "empty" , then will float between 1/4 full and empty, fuel light goes on , indicating i need gas but i know i have just filled it up - *tr
I'm having the same issue with the fuel gauge on my 2005 gmc envoy. i can register 1/4 a tank but the minute i fill, the gauge drops below empty and the fuel light comes on. i have to drive at least 25 miles to have it register even a 1/4 of a tank and a full 70-85 miles for the gauge to get to show a more accurate level. the mechanic i went to admitted it was the fuel level sensor causing the issue but advised me that i had to replace the entire fuel pump. he quoted $505 for the fuel pump and an additional $360 for the labor its not fixed i don't have the money, what happens if i run out of fuel on the highway or on a tight turn on a hill and the car shuts down and the steering locks? i've read 1000's of complaints and horror stories about this and no recall. this is extremely dangerous! *tr
Fuel gage started to read incorrectly after filling tank - initially would drop to empty and then read correctly after driving about 100 miles - now reads incorrectly all the time. after filling it will show empty and will never read more a quarter tank full. *tr
Fuel gauge just stopped working. is always on e. even when i fill it up.. gas light constantly on and dinging. i know this is a problem in envoys and i feel gmc should be liable for correcting the problem. mileage range is huge so it is hard to travel and know when to get gas. especially on the interstate when gas stations are not always in range.
The fuel level reads empty when i have just filled the tank. then when i drive for little while the level reads half full then goes back to empty. there is no way to tell how much gas is in the tank. the fuel level gauge is sometimes moving back fast to empty while driving. *tr
