We have classified the 12 complaints from 2003 GMC Envoy about SUSPENSION into the following categories.
Dear sir/madam, i have a 2003 gmc envoy slt model 4.2l v6 4wd and as i was backing into my garage i heard a loud bang and whinning noise and i now have no reverse gear and when i select the drive gear on the automatic transmission i have a whinning noise, i have read the blogs on this issue and i believe that gm and gmc are very aware of this problem, this repair will cost me up to $2,800.00 plus tax to have the transmission removed and a re-manufactured on replaced on my vehicle. i was just glad that this matter happened at my residence and not on some back road in west va., i believe that as stated, gm and gmc is very aware of the problem with the 4l603 transmission that were used in these vehicles' and the problem with the sun-shell and the reaction sun gears that are like a grenade exploding inside the transmission. i would like for a recall to be started on this problem and the owners to be paid back on all of these repairs. the consumer stated the air ride suspension that was installed on the vehicle is dangerous. the air ride suspension deflated on both sides on the rear of the vehicle, which caused the vehicle to bottom out on stops. updated 07/08/15
Was inspecting car and had several complaints to dealership that front end had a strange noise when we go over a rough road. while trying to figure out where fuel smell is coming from i noticed a crack on the weld next to the shock mount . i also noticed that there has been a previous repair there because we have had this car since it was new all i can think is that they saw this and did a repair and not telling us so if your car is creaking check the front end could be falling apart.
The air suspension fails to inflate. *tr
Gmc is suppose to be quality however, the rear suspension starts out getting lower and lower until the rear suspension dropped to the point that the vehicle was unsafe to be driven. because the truck was sitting on the rear tires and if the vehicle were to be driven, the tires would blow out and cause a crash and possibly a fatality! there are several complaint and concerns about the same issue yet nothing is being done. *tr
Where the top of the nesk of the fuel tank meets the fuel pump it is broken where the 2 meet. fuel vapors, as well as actual fuel leaking on the ground r both present. stationary , as well as, in motion.
When the weather got below freezing, the air bag suspension would not air up. now, every time i turn off my car, the suspension goes down and it will not air back up until i turn the car back on. if i have passengers in the back seat the suspension will not work. several times the suspension has deflated while i was driving and if i'm going at highway speeds, the vehicle begins to shake and wobble back and forth. it is very scary and i don't even like having my kids in the car because it seems so dangerous. i have read countless complaints on the internet about other envoy owners having the same problem. this should be on gm's recall list. *tr

Compressor for automatic load-leveling rear suspension cycles on and off intermittently while the vehicle is off. this happens even after the vehicle has been turned off for several hours. if not noticed, compressor will continue to cycle on and off and run down the battery. usually can hear a "puff" of air being released from the system right before the compressor cycles on. the compressor can stay on for as little as several seconds or for up to a few minutes. the cycle can last for what seems to be as little as 5 minutes or up to a few days so that the battery runs down if left at an airport while on vacation, for example. the only way to "break" the cycle is to drive the vehicle or turn the car on and then turn it off after several seconds. turning the car on and off doesn't always work. but, when operating the vehicle, the compressor seems to work normally. this problem has been happening for months, i have 5,000 miles on the vehicle which was purchased 2/2003. it has been in the shop for this problem 3 times. i took it in for service at farrish gmc / pontiac yesterday (3rd time) and it is still there today. as of yet, they have been unable to fix this problem because no technical service bulletin exists to guide them. the dealership has not conducted a visual inspection of the system or its components to look for leaks or broken parts. they've only done a computer diagnostic, which found nothing wrong. however, service consultants at the dealership have witnessed the event happening and the compressor turning on and off...while the vehicle is off. again, i need to stress that the problem is happening when the vehicle is turned off and not in use. the compressor should not even be able to turn itself on if the car is turned off. first time i brought the vehicle in for service was 7/12/2003, the second time on 8/29/2003 and then again for a third time on 10/20/2003. *la
The vehicle was rear-ended at about 45 mph. the back-end now fishtails, and there's tremendous body-roll with the slightest turn of the steering wheel. body work was completed to repair the beck-end, but no work has been done to the suspension. three separate trips to the dealer's service department claim that the excessive body roll is a charcteristic of the car and that there is no work to be performed. the vehicle is unstable at best, and dangerous while changing lanes at freeway speeds.*ak
While towing a 18 foot trailer at 60 mph driver had a hard time controlling the vehicle when other vehicles were passing on the highway. *ak
2003 gmc envoy with a list of problems **nar**cc the consumer began to hear a knocking and pinging in the engine on cold starts and felt a hesitation when the automatic transmission shifted into gear. after many complaints, it was finally discovered the engine knock was due to shorter pistons in the re-designed engine and the hesitation in the transmission shifting required reprogramming. the consumer was told he would have to live with the engine knock, because it could be more trouble taking the engine apart. on a separate occasion, the engine stalled due to the battery dying. from april 2004 to october 2004 the battery failed several times and had to be re-charged. during that same time the engine light illuminated and each time it happened, the dealer would have to reprogram the engine computer. the radio was not functioning properly which primarily consisted of static. the driver information center control knobs as well as the radio knobs wore out. the front center console was loose. it was discovered that the engine light was coming on because the third stop light that's on the top of the liftgate malfunctioned. there was a short circuit in the stop light. the cooling fan broke, the brakes and the left front head lamp had to be replaced. the rear tail lights, directional and signal lights have been replaced several times. the lug nut broke while a replacement tire was being mounted on the vehicle. the front stabilizer linkage was replaced. the gas tank had to be replaced along with the fuel lines and a seal on the tank due to a leak. the seat belt was designed poorly and the belt cuts into the consumers neck. the drivers side door didn't close properly, the windshield wipers were replaced within the first 2 years. *jb
