Problems with 2004 GMC Envoy XUV ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2004 GMC Envoy XUV starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 66 733 miles.

Components Affected by ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Issues

We have classified the 46 complaints from 2004 GMC Envoy XUV about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL 32 WIRING 1

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2004 GMC Envoy XUV

The third brake light connections located in the rear tailgate are severely corroded and will not light up when braking. this condition does not allow passing of state inspection. the entire brake light assembly and wire harness must to replaced to pass state vehicle inspection. this condition is continuous, when parked, when driving (we followed it around the block to see if it jiggled on), i have nothing to upload because the brake light will not light up.

Bought new. nothing but problems with electrical system. most started out of warranty. entire instrument panel stopped working, had to replace. radio system comes and goes, most of the time not working. a/c heating blower stopped working. different component like window, wipers, door lock just operate on they own then lock up. issues with ignition. can't remove the key. now rear window goes down on its own. vehicle won't start, rear tail gate won't operate. only way to start is by jumping but once turned off the battery drains so can't go anywhere because you're u never know if it going to start again. *tr

I was driving down the road from work all of a sudden my radio starts going up /down by itself, then the next day my windows made a clicking noise now they want let up/down .also the back tailgate was working until this happen my window in back want let up/down nor will the sunroof controls want work.all this happen at once !!!!!! the fuses was check nothing found. *tr

The speedometer and oil pressure gauges are erratic. speedometer needle sometimes reads up to 30 mph above or below actual speed. concurrently the oil pressure gauge is reading at its max and will not return to 0 when the vehicle is turned off. i have researched this issue online and it seems to be happening to a lot of people who have cars with these panels. *tr

First noticed reduced radio volume as if speakers were not completely connected. they radio would work correctly from time to time. service dept said it would have to replace entire dash system. then noticed rear door/tailgate would not open as a door, next the tailgate stopped functioning all together; this makes the rear part of the xuv useless and dangerous. dealer stated that is electronic and that all tailgate/rear door hinges rusted due to water coming in where rear window is/ estimate is over $650.00 and it would happen again!!! next the driver's door will not unlock except by manual unlocking from inside and sometime the key will not unlock to driver's door. key fob will not work on driver's door, tailgate/rear door; however, key fob works on passenger doors. dealer stated that the tailgate/rear door issue has a history of this happening so why isn't there a recall???? when will gmc make this right??? *tr

My car overheated on a normal day, about 80 degrees outside. i checked and replaced a defective thermostat, and started the engine only to find it misfiring badly for the first time. i gained advise from a local auto store and changed my spark plugs. when i pulled out the old ones, i found three of the six covered in oil. upon further research, i was instructed to remove the manifold and replace the tube seals but the plastic manifold cover would not come off as indicated in a gm mechanics manual. this is the last of several problems i've had with the 2004 gmc envoy xuv 2wd inline 6. i see many complaints on the oily spark plug issue and cracked manifold but no tsbs. last year, i had my a/c compressor go out and replaced, my gas tank leak and replaced under a 'special warranty', a diagnosis that my heater core is bad, all three motor mounts go out and replaced, and a number of various small electronic components go out. i need gmc to correct these issues outstanding with my vehicle and expect appropriate action from them. i spent well over $40000 for this vehicle and its not even 10 years old yet. gm has been well known for long life of their engines and body frames, and have said so on their behalf. they need to live up to the reputation i have so loyally painted for them. *tr

On june 8 2013 both the driver and passenger seat power adjustments ceased to operate or respond in any way. both seat stuck in a full back position. the next day, june 9 2013, the vehicle was at idle and in park for no more than 4 or 5 minutes, when an odd smell was noticed. a small electrical fire to include sparks and a lot of smoke then erupted under the passenger seat. the driver turned the vehicle off, and the passenger and 18 month old child, and driver all exited the vehicle. the fire died, and the smoke cleared. waited 15 minutes, restarted the vehicle with no problems. the vehicle was dropped off the next day, june 10 2013, a chevy dealership. the vehicle is currently under diagnoses. *tr

When in traffic traveling across states on highway at 55-65 mph left lane(scary) i ran out of gas when the gauge showed 1/4 of a tank now when tank is full it read 1/2 and at times the gauge floats around full to empty when driving some time it reads empty when i put 10 gallons in was told a bad fuel sender in tank i read other reports that g m recall will only pay half the cost to repair?? *tr

Battery died, could not open rear of vehicle, to retrieve pet dog inside. their should be an emergency release. *tr

2004 envoy xuv, impeccably maintained, had *no* response to accelerator as i made a left turn at a light across oncoming traffic. service engine soon and reduced engine power lights illuminated on dash. was fortunate not to have an accident. pulled to side of road. turned off engine. restarted, and it ran okay but the service engine soon light reappeared. drove another 35 miles with light on. the next morning it had re-set and the light is gone from the dash. how in the world does gm expect us to be able to replicate such incidents for a tech to fix? such failures will eventually kill someone. *tr

I have a 2004 trailblazer that the dash components (speed, gas, ect....) hasn't worked since 2008. it is a very expensive fix. i also have latch problems. i had a rear door stop latching...i used a bunjy cord to hold it shut and then proceeded to a junk yard for a 35 dollar new latch. i am a single mom trying to make my truck last. in the past 2 months i have had a fuel pump go, my latch, my tailgate won't open and my sunroof doesn't open any more and my truck is rusting horribly? i also had a cooling issue with emissions. it wasn't reading the engine temperature correctly. i have spent near two thousand dollars in repairs on this vehicle for odd things. p.s. i put the door latch in my self to save money. i have two kids to protect. *tr

I had a 2004 gmc envoy xuv and had several things going wrong. the speedometer was radical, some days it would work and other days not. the back window of the vehicle would be down for no reason at all when i was not even in or near the car. the engine light would come on and go off. like a fool i just purchased a used 2004 gmc envoy xuv, only owned it 2 days and smelled gas. looked under the vehicle and the entire rear of the underside of it was covered in gasoline. there was a small puddle on the garage floor. took the vehicle back to the dealer and they took out the gas tank and there is a leak in the filler neck. still waiting to get the car back, can't find parts. this will be my last envoy. *tr

My 2004 envoy xuv speedodometer stuck at 55mph. i spoke to dealer technician and was told i had to replace the instrument cluster because of a small thing called a stepper motor. this seems to be an on going problem with gm vehicles. i strongly suggest a safety recall because this is failing on thousands of vehicles. *ln

Erratic speed odometer readings, happens 3-4 times weekly. this happens from your actual speed of 40-60 mph, you look down next second and you are going 100-120 mph per odometer. when you come to a stop it says your still going 90-110 mph, only way to reset your odometer is to pull over and restart your car about 50-60 times until it says 0 mph. sometimes this wont last but 5 min... this also increases your cars mileage. gmc will not repair this with out charging you 600 dollars. this is not safe for anyone on the road and not fair to people owing cars, or buying cars to have not actual mileage on a car nor to be able to drive safely. updated ivoq 12/03/10. *tr

The speedometer in my 2004 gmc envoy is malfunctioning, this problem is well documented by many envoy/gmc owners. symptoms are indication of movement when the vehicle is stopped, any where up to maximum speedometer indication. at times the speedometer will stay at 0 when the vehicle is moving. submitted a service request to gm but was denied any assistance. *tr

The speedometer on my 2004 gmc envoy xuv intermittently works. roughly 10% of the time, the gauge will stop working completely. now, the rpm gauge has also begin acting erratically. i have contacted gmc customer support, and they directed me to the local dealer, who will charge me $79 simply to "diagnose" the problem, followed by a likely $600 repair to replace the entire cluster. a simple online search of "2004 gmc envoy xuv speedometer problems" returned 10's of thousands of hits, so it appears this is a very widespread problem. after checking into the situation with gm dealers there is a recall on the sierra's and yukons which have the same cluster as my vehicle but gm refuses to stand behind the defect on the envoys. parts have not been replaced yet on my vehicle hoping that gm will wake up and realize this is a common problem on the envoys and that it requires attention. below is just one of many links which highlight the issue many gmc owners are facing: http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2004/gmc/envoy/digital+instrument+panel. *tr

I have a 2004 suv xlt. i bought my car with 400 miles on it. i had the gas tank replaced early on. went back to gmc b/c they had not installed it properly. i've had both front and rear sway bars replaced and both knock sensors replaced. my middle window decided to quit working and i haven't gotten it fixed because the guys at the gmc service center said they couldn't imagine what it could be and they would have to charge me $100 for a diagnosis!! my radio/cd player is only half lit up and stops working when it gets too hot from playing a cd... i am currently having issues with the fan clutch, thermostat and a leak in my front differential. meanwhile the guys at the dealership wanted to charge me $1,500 to replace my knock sensors again and didn't even find the leak when they were "diagnosing" my issue. i truly do love my car, but i am super mad about the middle window and super mad about all of these issues. i take care of my car and do all of the routine maintenances. i think i know why it was only on the market for two years. please help us get our middle windows fixed. i didn't do anything to cause it to stop working. *tr

My speedometer has stopped working. the gas gauge says empty when i have just fueled the car to full. the car will surge forward when i am backing out of the drive way and putting car in drive. i have to immediately press on the brake and return the car to neutral position to stop from running into parked cars or the curb. tonight we were leaving the park and both headlights ( low beam) are not working. all other lights and flashers on the car work. the interior light on the left half of the a/c controller does not work.the motor in the rear window went out. the dealership charged me $ 1000 to replace the motor and then they advised me that the middle window motor was bad and that would be an additional $600 to repair. i only could afford the back window motor. this car is my only mode of transportation and i cannot believe that gm has npt placed a recall on all of these issues. *tr

We have a 2004, gmc envoy xuv, which we purchase brand new in 2004. since last year winter, i noticed that my speedometer would get stuck and run erratically, which i thought at the time was due to the cold. occasionally too, we'd come to the garage to find the rear window open and the tailgate unable to open. during those times, we were able to bring the window back up with the button inside the vehicle, as well as unlock the tailgate by locking and unlocking the doors with the remote. also, the truck would stall during driving, especially at turns, but would start again. just last week, my wife was just about to leave home last week, when she noticed the rear tailgate window had gone down by itself as usual; following which all electronic efforts to bring it up failed, and the tailgate or roof wouldn't open as well. then, we heard some humming inside the tailgate. my wife left home only to have the truck's battery fail at the local mall. since then, the instrument cluster has also continuously gone haywire, with the speedometer reading erratically as well as the oil pressure gauge. the dealership says there are no recalls regarding any of these manufacturing defects, and my research indicates these are problems most gmc envoy xuv owners are experiencing, without recourse of having it fixed by gm at no charge. now, we know why they have lost the market share to japan vehicles, because our next vehicle will never be a gm, unless all these problems are recalled and fixed. we'll also ensure to mount a lack-of-confidence campaign against gm vehicles with everyone we know, if nothing is done about asap by gm. *tr

Speedometer don't work, gas gauge don't work, transmission is going out etc and i only had the vehicle for 9 months now but the problems have been for along time. *tr

Speedometer stopped working correctly on my 2004 envoy, with only 24000 miles on it. i was on a trip last week which caused me to get a speeding ticket because of this. originally it was 10 mph off, but now is reading as high as 70 mph while the vehicle is standing still. based on other info i had read on the web, this has been a consistent problem with gmc envoys yet no recall has been issued by gm and the cost to repair is very high ($500.00 +). this is now a variable problem that shows my speed off as much as 80 mph and could have caused me to be traveling at excessive, unsafe speeds, if i tried to use it. *tr

Oil gauge stopped working since 2010. changed oil pressure switch, but oil gauge still not reading. speedometer gauge started giving false readings since early 2011. fails to read correctly since, reading up to 200mph @ real speeds up to 40mph. about a year later rpm gauge failed and stopped working since early 2012. we never know what speed we are going with a lot of risks involved, including speeding tickets or else. there are many owners with same problem, with costly repairs and sometime no fix. hoping for gmc to step up to the plate. *tr

Xuv would not shift out of 3rd. vehicle sat over night and would not start the next day. dealer checked all systems, replaced ignition switch. two weeks later, vehicle would not start. it was determined the starter was bad, it was replaced. now the speedometer is going haywire like others. mechanic stated it would cost over $700 to replace components. *tr

This vehicle seems to have an electrical drain or electrical ghost of some sorts. the battery has been replaced by the dealer 4 time with the previous owner. that was the dealers cure. then when i purchased it i replaced the battery.then it was replaced for the 6th time 18 months later. the rear window on the tail gate kept going down on it's own until the motor flew apart. the window behind the rear seat went down on it's own and does not work anymore. the retractable back roof will not engage due to the rear window. driving down the road the ac will come on by itself also the radio, the seat heaters. now while i'm driving at night the headlights will go out on their own, luckily the bright lights still work, but that's not helping the poor soul in front of me. gm says that there is no recall on any of this but i'm almost terrified to drive this vehicle or let anyone else drive it at night or anytime for that matter. not to mention any kind of electrical problems that i may of overlooked. *tr

Speedometer failed at 44,000 miles. gas gauge misreads. instrument cluster is being replace by gmc on other models with the same cluster but they decided not to replace the envoys cluster. gmc knows that they have clusters that fail and have even been monetary reimbursement by other companies to replace but still do not replace for the envoys. *tr

i have gmc envoy xuv slt 2004 model and last year battery light came on and i changed the battery and still red battery light continued and i took it to dealership and charged me 100 dollars to check and was told that nothing is wrong and red light persisted and was told that cluster board needs change but after few weeks red light was gone and than few weeks later glass between passenger cabin and trunk went down and would not work and took it to mechanic and was told that cables are bad and than few weeks later the speedometer started acting up and would show 30 miles when care is idle and would race to 110 miles and than would start showing normal and took it to mechanic and was told that it will cost 500 dollars and two days ago the tail window glass dropped. and reading on line multiple gm car owners and chery car suv owners have reported similar problems.i think this is a poor work man ship on part of gm and should be recalled or be fixed by gm at no cost to owner. i have lost faith in gm car and probably will not consider . *tr

2004 gmc envoy xuv w/76k miles; speedometer is erratic. shows no speeds sometimes or shows slow speed sometimes or shows excessive speed sometimes. dealer indicated gmc yukons, full size gmc pickup and cadillac suv's were recalled for defective speedometers.. dealer stated not enough reported speedometer problems with envoy xuv's to warrant a safety recall. how many defective speedometers are required to warrant a safety recall? *tr

Speedometer stuck at 120 mph even sitting still and turned off. started a month ago and continually got worse. now it won't move at all. very dangerous. *tr

Cluster panel on my 2004 gmc envoy xuv has failed. gm stated they are not aware of any problems with this type of car. information on the internet has different information. i asked about this to gm and they stated they are not aware of anything being on the internet and can not be held responsible for what is on the internet. *tr

2004 gmc envoy suv, 45,xxx miles. november 2009 envoy would not hold charge (new battery replaced 7-09), jumped envoy and would loose charge, keys always were locked in vehicle ignition. april 2010 again, vehicle would not hold charge (something draining battery - nothing left on). took vehicle to mechanic, no problems located, mechanic replaced 7-09 battery (free), drove vehicle 4 days and did not drive for 5 days - again vehicle would not start (no lights, etc) jumped vehicle off. took vehicle back to mechanic, nothing indicated in starter, alternator, battery - nothing was left on. took home again same problem 4 days running, 6 days did not drive, vehicle will not start; had to jump off again. it is currently at the mechanic. in the meantime i researched and found gm bulletin 04-06-03-002 for "misindexed ignition switch"; numerous reports online of same issue. currently envoy is at mechanic after i reported gm bulletin. *tr

Car lurched forward and engine speeded up when pulling into my driveway at home. most of my dashboard gauges have been failing over the last year including the speedometer. i was using the cruise control prior to the event. i think it may be related to the computer. i was able to stop the car by turning off the engine. the brakes would not stop the car. the dealer has advise me that they know about the instrument panel failing but no recall has been issued. *tr

The contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. the contact stated that the speedometer suddenly stopped working. contacted dealer about issue and told instrument cluster needed to be repaired. the dealer also stated that they would not be responsible for the repairs. through online research, the contact discovered that numerous people were experiencing the same failure and gm sept 2007 tsb 07187 included envoy but latest revisions b & c at dealers does not include envoy. the vehicle has not yet been repaired; however, the contact believes that the failure was due to a manufacturer defect and a recall should be issued. the vehicle has only 20,000 miles and see this lack of gmc owning up to its issue is a huge safety problem. *tr

Erratic speedometer operation. shows various speeds when stopped. inaccurate when underway. will show up to 110 mph driving in the city. dealer says instrument panel needs to be repaired at cost of over $400. same problems on full size gm trucks. full size trucks are being covered under service bulletin #07187a, b, & now c. speedometer repair shop says stepper motors are bad. same part number and repair as on full size trucks. gm has excluded envoy and trailblazer from this repair coverage. *tr

Speedometer defect - known issue but no recall; can't tell how fast or slow i'm going, after reading forums, not sure if other dashboard problems - hard to drive safely when trying not to watch the dash to see if something other than speedometer indicates a problem. distraction to the point of being dangerous - especially around this area. what about school zones? *tr

Speedometer started showing i was going 90-130mph when i was on probably moving 50mph. it was about 30-50mph off. when car is off speedometer shows 50mph. found out you can make speedometer drop 5mph at a time if you turn the car on & off about 20 times it will eventually go to zero mph. after a few days it does the same erratic behavior. i have read over hundreds of post online about this on this make and model alone and think this is a very big safety concern. i need help and need my car fixed please help. *tr

I purchased my 2004 envoy xuv new. i love it, but the speedometer has been getting progressively worse. i guess i've been one of the lucky ones. the brakes are fine and everything else seem to be ok so far. i currently have 89,000 miles on it and the frequency of the speedo acting up are getting more common. i remember the first time was late in '07. the speedo just kept climbing higher and higher till it was pinned. and stayed there for a day or two. it would read 120 mph parked in the garage. i brought it in and the dealer just rolled their eyes and said they could order another dash board for around $500.00, but i opted not to fix it at that time. the dealer told me it was a common thing with the envoy, but gm has no recalls on it. it had seemed fine for a while. then it happened again a few times in '08. now it's only march of '09 and it has happened at least once every two weeks. it is clearly out of warranty but being a safety item such as a instrument cluster one would think it would be a recall item. this appears to be a nation wide issue and gm and the dot / nhtsa do not recognize it? i like the vehicle, i am happy with it otherwise. just disappointed and frustrated with the nhtsa and gm. *tr

The speedometer needle fluttered and then stuck between 100-120 mph. it is unclear if there is any current service bulletin (e.g., #07187a (includes envoy) and #07187b (does not include envoy), or #040845010) which covers this defect which, according to various chat sites, has occurred in other vehicles. it is unsafe to drive the vehicle. we are awaiting a replacement part which will be at our expense. replacement costs vary be geographic location. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy xuv. the contact cannot determine how fast she is driving on the freeway. the speedometer does not work correctly when there is a half a tank or less of fuel in the vehicle. gmc stated that there was no recall for her vehicle. the failure mileage was 80,000. updated 3/19/09 *cn updated 03/23/09.*jb

The speedometer does not register the correct speed. this has been happening for over a year and it is pretty consistent. called gmc and was told it would be fixed for free but when i went to dealership they said no. i still have the problem and believe it should be a recall. *tr

The speedometer needle broke and gave wrong reading. had to replace ip cluster. *tr

Speedometer malfunction - envoy 2004 -electrical errors speedometer malfunctions off & on.......up to 120 mph while idling, not able to get correct speed reading.......unsafe. *tr

While driving on a 5-6 hour trip, the speedometer began malfunctioning about 1/2 way through the trip. we had to use the speedometer on the tomtom to determine our correct speed since the speedometer was reading 5-10 over the speed limit. after the vehicle sat for the night, it started working again...but only to stop again 1/2 way through our trip back home. i have noticed that this has happened to the speedometer on more than one occasion and refuse to pay the outrageous amount to repair it. i think this is a manufacturer defect and should be taken care of by them. *tr

The speedometer on my envoy xuv jumped from 75mph to 120moh as i slowed down to exit the interstate. it continued to increase, although it was past the point of registering any speed. it has lowered some, but is still acting erratically. this vehicle is only 4 years old, and i'm looking at a $500+ repair. *tr

I have a 2004 envoy xuv. since last year winter, i noticed that my speedometer would get stuck and run erratically, which i thought at the time was due to the cold. occasionally too, we'd come to the garage to find the rear window open and the tailgate unable to open. during those times, we were able to bring the window back up with the button inside the vehicle, as well as unlock the tailgate by locking and unlocking the doors with the remote. also, the truck would stall during driving, for no reason but would start again (big safety issue!!! i could not steer or brake well). since then, the instrument cluster has also continuously gone haywire, with the speedometer reading erratically as well as the oil pressure gauge. the mid window no longer functions and my tailgate will not latch closed. i have had it swing open while in traffic (another safety concern!!!!! what if i have something back there and it falls out) the dealership says there are no recalls regarding any of these manufacturing defects, and my research indicates these are problems most gmc envoy xuv owners are experiencing, without recourse of having it fixed by gm at no charge. now, we know why they have lost the market share to japan vehicles, because our next vehicle will never be a gm, unless all these problems are recalled and fixed. we'll also ensure to mount a lack-of-confidence campaign against gm vehicles with everyone we know, if nothing is done about asap by gm. *tr

The speedometer in my 2004 gmc envoy xuv at unpredictable times will display speeds less than my actual speed. this creates an unsafe situation where i cannot ensure that i am driving within posted speed limits. *tr

Faulty instrument cluster per gm, speedometer and fuel gauge act up on their own. cannot rely on gauges while driving... *tr

Erratic speedometer on 2004 gmc envoy xuv shows various speeds from zero to 120+ mph while driving at normal road speeds. need to use tachometer to determine approximate speed of vehicle (2000 rpm = 65 mph for this vehicle). when ignition is turned off the speedometer needle does not always return to zero, the speedometer needle also shutters a little intermittently when reducing speed. *tr

2004 gmc envoy xuv: the speedometor failed last year, and probably wasn't working properly before that. i see that a number of other people are having the same problems with their gmc's. *tr

Speedometer started sticking, when turned off and back on would correct this for a short time. after a while speedometer showed i was going 90 mph. since this, my speedometer completely stopped. (although, yesterday when i looked at my speedometer it did show 50 mph then went back to zero) i was also told this was a faulty stepper motor. i don't feel that i should pay $250 to have a $25 motor installed when this is obviously a manufacturing defect. *tr

Speedometer does not work and dealer won't cover under warranty. seems to be a big problem with gmc vehicles. *tr
