We have classified the 259 complaints from 2002 Ford Windstar about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
Braking distance suddenly increased, under category: service brakes, hydraulic. my brake light and abs light comes on. according to the mechanic i had the sensor replaced in this unit, and not sure what they fixed the second time. both mechanics told me i was leaking brake fluid too, i have not been able to add brake fluid myself, i can't reach the reservoir. brake and abs lights still comes on and very seldom does the lights go off. i had to have a vehicle inspection this past year, and the first time it did not pass because the light was on. thankfully the second time i went in for the inspection it was not on. however, i am concerned with this years inspection.
Abs light brake light and traction control lights started coming on occasionally about 06/01/05. the problem got worse and happens every time the car was driven. the abs module is defective and ford needs to recall this part as they have on the ford escape. the condition can lead to a fire. i have pulled the fuses so i don't catch fire. please hold ford accountable and force them to recall this problem! *tr
The abs and brake dash warning lights intermittently come on, especially after the vehicle warms up or i hit a puddle and water splashes underneath. this has been going on for years. firestone has inspected the vehicle multiple times and cannot find anything wrong. they are again suggesting to flush the brake system and do an engine diagnostic (again at cost of $200). while there has been no crash or damage i am in constant fear that there will be as the brakes might fail but i'd never know it since the warning lights are almost always on and repair work hasn't been able to turn them off. *tr
I have been having problems with my 2002 ford windstar van for about three years or so. my brake light and abs light stays on, i have leaking brake fluid, and my brakes squeaked sometimes. i also on two occasions had my odometer reading go out and because of this i was not able to keep track of my mph or my mileage. about three years ago i went to ford about my brake problem and was told i needed new brakes i got those brakes and after that i still experienced brake/ abs problems. i am a divorce mom of four and our lives are important and i need my van to get around. so, please look into this matter for our safety, as well as, for the safety of other families. thank you *tr
Hello. i would like to file a report a problem that is currently being reported by ford windstar owners. i own a ford windstar that has the abs and brake light issue. the problem occurs intermittently, and is not consistent. i have taken my car to the dealership in the past, and all the dealership seems to be doing is guessing as to what is broken, and the problem has not been fixed. the exact description of the problem is found here: http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ i am getting the error codes c1185, c1198, c1194, c1254, c1246, c1250, c1242, c1214, c1210, u1261. they replaced and reprogrammed the abs module, on mar 31, 2005, but the problem is still present. i took it back numerous times, only to be told some stupid thing. i am concerned that this is a hazard/life threatening issue, and i would like the ford motor to take the time, think this problem out, and solve the problem, and not just guess at the solution. there are other people logging complaints about this, and when i took my vehicle in a year ago for an oil change, i had them check my vin # for any recalls, and i was told that my vehicle did not fall under some of the current ones with identical problems. if this is the type of quality they give to their customers, then my next purchase, i can tell you this, will not be a ford product. *tr
Intermittent abs and brake light illumination. this happens after the vehicle warms up. vehicle has been inspected by ford. no codes are found. this has been happening for over three years. ford has a technical service bulletin #15682 (nhtsa item number: 636312) since 11/2002 to address this problem, but still can't rectify this problem. ford has a voluntary recall for the same problem on other models from the same year. i have heard of many other owners who have the same problem. *tr
Brake pads and rotors had to be replaced every 6000 miles. dealer stated there was no manufacturer's defect. *ak
2002 ford windstar. parking/abs warning light on dash board is constantly lit. problem started years ago, at that time it was intermittent now its almost constant. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving approximately between 35-40 mph on normal road conditions; pressure was applied to the brake pedal the front btakes locked and the driver was unable to turn the steering wheel. the vehicle also skidded without warning. the failure continued to occur intemittently. the "brake" and "abs" warning light indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was shut off by the driver. the contact was able to drive the vehicle with caution; however, there was an increase in the engine rpms. an authorized dealer replaced the intake manifold gasket and the alternator. on a separate occasion, the the air bag system failed to deploy with a level of impact to the rear of the vehicle. there were no personal injuries. the contact had concerns of the safety risk involved. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 119,336. the vin number was rejected from the system which will be updated upon receipt of the safety complaint form.
Abs light has been on for several years, but mechanics can find no problem with brake system. as of last week, odometer displayed dashes, speedometer is not operating, and there is little to no stopping capability in the brakes. no brake fluid, apparently. *tr
When braking at any speed steering wheel vibrated heavily. dealership repaired the front rotors/pads, but this did not resolve the problem. *ak had to change wiper blades one week later, they were rotten. transmission problems, had to drive in 2nd gear all the to the dealer, also has a strong clunking while putting vehicle into any gear. *bf
Brakes failed five times within one year. *ak
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while the contact was driving approximately 15 mph, the transmission failed without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the transmission was replaced under the service warranty. the transmission failure reoccurred six months later and was replaced with a new transmission. the transmission and radiator were replaced on two different occasions. the contact paid the cost for the repair expense for the one radiator replacements. in addition, the vehicle experienced a failure with the front brakes and front rotors, which had required annual replacement . also, while driving the rear axle fractured. the failure mileage was unknown.
The brake light is on. dealer can't find any defects with the brakes or why the light stay on.*ak since purchased vehicle on at least 25-30 occasions the brake light on the dash will remain on when starting car and going in reverse to back out of driveway/garage. when hand brake not engaged light stays on. squeal is heard from rear often, until stopping and putting in drive. stays on for several hundred feet until stopping. *bf *nm
While applying the brakes abs braking system lightwill appear on the dashboard. *ak
While driving at 20 mph,the driver stepped on the brake pedal and the brake pedal had a delayed reaction, which resulted in the vehicle hitting a wall head on. dealer had been notified. *ak when the first incident occurred, the brakes were engaged but did not stop the vehicle, the engine revved and the vehicle kept going. the vehicle had run into the corner of the flower wall of the stores sign. the second incident was similar, but the consumer was in a school zone at a stop sign and the engine revved, the consumer applied the brakes, the vehicle jumped but did not stop. pressure was applied three times to the brakes, then the vehicle finally had come to a complete stop. the problem was unable to be duplicated. *scc *jb
This morning on my way to drop off my son at school my 2002 ford windstar moved into oncoming traffic as i was stopped at a stop sign. i had the brake pedal down and the van suddenly starting moving forward. by the time i pressed as hard as i could on the brake pedal the van stopped about 10 feet into the oncoming lane of traffic. the dash brake light came. i was able to make it to a local shop where i was told the brakes were fine. i nearly was hit by oncoming traffic and had 3 small children in the van. *tr
anti lock brake shifter is inoperative, this device is to prevent lever from shifting without brake depression.also, child was able to shift lever into drive gear while vehicle was parked.*ak
For the past year the abs and brake lights have intermittently illuminated on the dashboard of my 2002 ford windstar. about 1 week ago they came on and have remained illuminated when i start my van. i took my vehicle to the local ford dealer and was quoted $700.00 to fix the abs sensor module, but was told by the service rep that i'd still have normal (not abs) brake function without the module repair. here are the diagnostic codes: c1185, c1194, c1198, c1210, c1214, c1242, c1246, c1250 and c1254. it was also noted that the van's brake fluid is low and a wheel cylinder may be leaking. i also note a very discernible squeaking sound when braking---this has been ongoing for quite a while. *tr
Experiencing intermittent abs and brake warning light. ford dealer pulled computer code and got c1185 and numerous other codes. the diagnoses was that the problem was most likely the abs control module. they would not guarantee that replacement would fix problem so for the $700.00 they wanted decided to investigate problem myself. glad i did . it seems as if this is a very common problem on the 2002 ford windstar and has the potential to be a fire hazard. i am actually very surprised that ford would not issue a recall or at least offer their customers a subsidized price to replace this defective abs module ($700.00 seems very high for a small electrical component) not only because of the fire hazard issue but because this has to do with the brake system which is certainly a safety issue. *tr
Gas/brake pedal are too close, causing consumer to push both at the same time.*ak *yh
