Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2002 Ford Windstar

Abs light and brake light come on after car has warmed up. occurrence is much quicker and more frequent in summer months. *tr

While driving brake, abs, traction control warning lights display on...on dash. manual states while these warning lights are on abs and traction control systems are automatically disengaged. ford dealership confirmed this. there is nothing wrong with brakes. ford service told me either one or both of the following parts are malfunctioning- number 2f2z-2c219-ca-control module, and part number 1f2z-2b373-ba valve assembly........... and that it is sensing a problem when there is none and shutting down the systems which can be dangerous. they told me they are seeing this "alot" with these vehicles. the parts are aprox 800.00 a piece installed by ford and dealership states "its getting hard to find used ones that work properly" bought the van used aprox 2 weeks ago and this has occurred 3 times. service told me there is danger with these systems disengaged and there is a possibility that it could potentially alter even normal braking. the first two times it occurred the lights when off when i shut the vehicle off and turned it back on. the third time that did not work, but they were off when vehicle was restarted after sitting one day. *tr

2002 ford windstar. brake warning and abs warning lights come on unexpectedly. they can be reset only by turning off the engine and restarting. the come on intermittently. brake fluid level is ok. sometimes they come on when hitting a bump, sometimes going up a hill, sometimes nothing but level road and at various speeds. this has been happening for at least 25,000 miles. *tr

Ford windstar 2002. cruise control only engages intermittently. when cruise control is on, it will dis-engage abruptly for no reason. yellow abs dash light and red brake warning dash light go on intermittently (simultaneously). after they go on, they stay on until the car is turned off. the abs system appears to still work correctly even when the yellow abs light is on and the red brake light is on (although there is no way for the driver to tell if the abs system and brake system are working correctly or not when the warning lights are on). my local ford dealership diagnosed that the ecm control module needs to be replaced. this is an expensive electronic component with no moving parts, and there is no reason that this board should be failing. this is a common problem with 2002 ford windstar models. i believe ford should be required to offer free diagnosis and repair for any problems related to ecm control modules for this model year. i first noticed the problem around october 2008 as the weather turned colder. this is consistent with a theory that the ecm board is sensitive to temperature changes, which affects the correct working of the cruise control and abs systems. the cruise control mostly did not work during the winter 2008-2009. as warmer temperatures arrived in spring 2009, the cruise control started to work intermittently again. sometimes it engages correctly, sometimes i push the "set" button repeatedly and finally it engages, sometimes i push the "set" button repeatedly and it will not engage. when it is engaged, it will dis-engage abruptly for no reason. i suspect sometimes it dis-engages because the car hit a bump in the road - but frequently it dis-engages with no bump in the road. having the cruise control dis-engage abruptly for no reason is a safety issue and could easily result in an accident. having the abs system not work correctly (due to the ecm module) is a safety issue and could easily result in an accident. *tr

Brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time developed a leak. my cruise control has stopped responding, and brake fluid is leaking at an exponential rate out of the reservoir above the master cylinder. *tr

At this time there has not been an incident, however ford is not taking the abs module problem seriously. my 2002 ford windstar se currently has the abs and brake warning lights come on at random times. these lights stay on for a period of time and then when van is restarted sometimes they are still on and sometimes they are not. i do not have the money to fix ford's flaw. *tr

This is on a 2002 ford windstar. the brake pressure differential deactivation switch located under the master cylinder has developed a leak. this appears to be a know problem with the ford windstar but ford has done nothing about it. also, the abs system failed due to heat build up. again it appears that this is something that ford has known. i also noticed that ford escapes were recalled with this same problem so why not the windstars? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the anti-lock brake system, traction control and service brake warning lights would simultaneously illuminate on the instrument control panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and a technician concluded that the master cylinder failed. he then added that the repairs would cost over $2400.00. the failure mileage and current mileages were less than 62,000.

While driving on the highway during a pcs military move, the abs light and brake warning light came on. this incidence occurred in june of 2007. i took it by an automotive repair shop, and i was told that the brakes probably heated up, and it would go off at the end our trip. as of the summer of 2008, the abs warning light and brake warning light started coming on again. i took it to an automotive repair shop and was given the codes c1185 and d1262. the warning light has since then come on and off. in october of 2008, while i was on the highway, the cruise control light was flashing, the rpm meter, speedometer, and fuel meter shut down and completely failed on me. i was still able to drive, and the next day i took it to an automotive repair shop at which they performed a diagnostics test and had to replace the brake pressure switch. now while i drive, the outside brake lights stay on. just this morning, my neighbor informed me that my outside brake lights were flashing and my battery died. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving approximately 30 mph the antilock brake light and the brake light illuminated on the dashboard. the vehicle was shut off and upon restart the lights were no longer illuminating. the failure continued to occur intermittently over the last two and a half years. the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 44,000 and the current mileage was 48,000.

Abs light and brake lights switch on and off in my 2002 windstar with no warning for the past two years. van is at 110k miles, and seems to drive fine. because the warning lights keep going on and off, i don't know if the warning system is actually working. this is very frustrating because i don' know how safe my van is. i had the brakes checked completely when this started and was told they were fine....another mechanic suggested the abs module was going bad? *tr

Quick stopping and applying the brakes a little harder than normal in heavy traffic, the anti lock brake system engaged. the next time the brake was applied the pedal went right to the floor and there was little and next to no brakes. i slowly eased to the right lane where i could reach the shoulder. after having the problem looked at and repaired , i was told that this model does not bypass the anti lock brake system when it locked up and failed. i could not brake with my normal braking system. i had recently had my brakes checked and i had 50% brakes left. so i was totally surprised and frightened when i had no brakes to stop safely. i keep my car regularly checked and in good working order because i do not like surprises. i believe this is a safety hazard and should have been notified by ford. the abs light did not go on and there were no leaks of fluid. i checked and there were no recalls. *tr

Sensor on brake master cylinder is leaking on transmission electric connector, almost ran out brake fluid. *tr

Abs brake light is on. i was infromed that there may be a recall for these vehicles. 2002 ford windstar.*tr

2002 ford windstar van...dash brake lights and abs lights come on while driving. you turn vehicle off then on the lights go out. drive a little while, lights are back on. it occurs when it is hot outside, and when the ac is on. *tr

The abs light and brake light stays on when the engine is started. *tr

The abs and brake lights com on for no apparent reason. the reset themselves. also the cruise control stopped engaging. *tr

My van brake light and abs light had been coming on for at least 6 months... my mechanic was trying to determine if it was the abs switch or abs module and just reset the codes after a tune-up. we would add brake fluid to the car on several occasions. the failure occurred when i started my van and backed out of a parking spot. i smelled something burning and realized my van was smoking. at first i thought it was steam and then i realized it was white smoke. so i reparked my vehicle, shut it off and popped the hood. when i got around i followed the engine from left to right and in the back right was a perfect propane flame. i blew it out. i noticed the part was connected down below the brake fluid reservoir, wired ran to that part, on the bottom the part that was on fire was rusted. but it appeared to plug into the part it was attached to like a key and then wires came down from there... my mechanic disconnected the part saying i would not longer have cruise control and he ordered the part from ford in milledgeville, ga. he replaced the part on 8/25/08. i do not believe the old part is still available. since the part has been replaced my brake light and abs light still come on! *tr

Various warning lights coming on,abs , brake light , odometer reading dashes only and overdrive lights started blinking while driving. electrical diagnosis and pinpoint test by ford found that the fuse blown due to the brake pressure switch leaking fluid through the wiring harness to the speed control servo and melting the servo. two days after the repair, the abs light and brake light started coming on again. tested again by ford dealer, they said it's a faulty ecu module. *tr

The brake light and abs light on the dash will turn on. the brake system has been checked and no cause can be found. it is occurring when engine is hot. after turning off engine and restarting it, the lights will stay off for approx 10 min. then turn on again. i am requesting a recall. ford motor company has been aware of this problem for some time now, and so do you. this problem has caused fires in other ford windstars. please force an instant recall. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving between 45-55 mph, the engine began to lose power. the contact pulled into a ford dealer and was informed that the brake cruise deactivation switch was leaking into the fuse box. the failure caused the speedometer to fail and the abs and several other lights to illuminate. recall number 05528 (deactivation switch) was referenced regarding the ford explorer. the current and failure mileages were 70,000. update 09/10/08 *cw updated 09/15/08. *jb

2002 ford windstar brake and abs warning lights sometimes come on while driving. go off when engine stopped but may come back on during driving. no connection to speed, driving duration, or brake application. happens on freeway and city driving with or without brake use. intermittent problem for about 2 months, increasing in frequency. newer brakes. fluid good. 89,000 miles. recently discovered this is a frequent ongoing problem for windstar owners. *tr

We had recently purchased this vehicle and as we drove to ft. wayne in the traction control light, abs light, and brake light all came on. now they come on every time i drive the vehicle. i was told that when this happens the antilock brakes will not work, this is a safety hazard. a ford dealership wants $825.00 to fix something that i feel should be recalled. *tr

My 2002 ford windstar intermittently has the brake and abs light come on and stay on. brake fluid levels are normal, cannot predict when it's going to happen. once the lights come on they stay on until you shut off the van and restart it, then they go off, sometimes for a few hours, sometimes a few days, sometimes a few weeks. i have looked extensively into this issue, found out that it is a huge problem with ford windstar and everyone has the exact same problem, and eventually it can cause a fire in some cases. *tr

Cruise control on 2002 ford windstar started working intermittently. research online shows a defective switch on the master brake cylinder is a very common failure that causes this. this switch is used on many ford vehicles and was subject of recall due to fire hazard. for some reason the recall doesn't apply to my 2002 windstar yet, however. *tr

While partially parked into the garage, after driving for one hour and sitting for half of an hour, smoke was observed from under van. smoke stopped and noticed "abs" warning light on. brakes worked, but cruise control did not. dealer installed/ replaced: 1) brake kit/ brake pressure deactivation switch, 2) ecm control module, 3) valve asy. 4) two wiring harnesses (one was a used from a ford escape, due to the availability and cost.), 5) two fuses, 6) brake fluid and misc. shop supplies. it was at the dealer for 11 days, cost for repairs was $1831. drove it 5 miles and "check engine" light came on. the dealer stated this was not related to original problem. it was the dpfe sensor: $331 to repair. normally the van is garaged, luckily something was in the way of fully pulling it into the garage and the fire went away quickly. dealer stated it was a "catastrophic failure" and that the deactivation switch had nothing to due with the valve asy. going bad/leaking causing a fire. *tr

2002 ford windstar intermittent abs light on. brake switch recall done 6 months ago, no fire. i have reason to believe their is a problem with the abs module due to code c1185 main relay issue. it has been reported of a solder joint on the ecm breaking due to expanding and contracting in heat and cold. *tr

Dash brake and abs lights come on. they can be reset by turning the engine off and restarting. noticed leaking switch on bottom of master cylinder. wiring damp with brake fluid. cruise control doesn't work anymore. *tr

There are three failures on my car that have happened within the last three months. the 2002 ford windstar only has 57,000 miles. 1. intake manifold gaskets leaking: gaskets are sucking air in and not sealing properly 2. broken strut, this is the second time this has been replaced. the first time was within 10,000 miles. 3. abs control module: the control module has been diagnosed and faulty by the dealership. about a $1,200 to replace. all these things should not be happening to a car that is maintained well, garage kept, and only has 57k miles on it. *tr

Intermittent red brake light for a year or more. abs would still work.. then smelled something burning in garage. found wiring harness connector to abs unit burned up. vehicle battery dead. red and yellow lights on all the time. sure glad it didn't burn my house down. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that the brake and anti lock braking system lights would constantly illuminate on the instrument panel. the contact also stated that the ignition light and cruise control switch did not function. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where they were unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure milege was 100,000 and the current mileage was 140,000.

2002 ford windstar brake pressure differential deactivation switch developed a leak resulting in significant brake fluid loss and deactivation of cruise control functionality. *tr

Hit a bump in the road and traction light, abs light and brakes lights come on. the lights stay on until i turn the car off. it only happens when i hit a bump a certain way so the lights are not on all the time. i've taken it to a few garages and was told that nothing is wrong with my brakes. if nothing is wrong why do the lights comes on. no one knows. *tr

Abs & brake lights come on at the same time periodically while driving. *tr

Both the brake warning light and abs warning light come on intermittently in our 2002 ford windstar. this typically occurs during warmer weather or when the vehicle has been driven for a few hours or more. *tr

Own a 2002 ford windstar and i am having a situation where both the abs light and brake remain on while driving. i have read of problems with the "brake pressure differential deactivation switch" in other windstars and decided to check it out on mine after reading of engine fires occurring because of it. on mine i have found a considerable amount of brake fluid underneath the master cylinder in the engine compartment. i had my son pump the brakes while i had the wiring to the deactivation switch removed and noticed that the brake fluid was leaking as the brakes were pumped. i have decided to replace the deactivation switch before a possible fire occurs. *tr

All the light on abs, brake are all lit up and i was told it was the abs module in the 2002 windstar and they are prone to break down and the breaking is off on the van when the lights are on. *tr

The abs, brake and traction control warning lights in my 2002 ford windstar keep coming on intermittently. brake fluid is normal and front brakes were recently replaced. warning lights seem to appear when started after the vehicle has been sitting in the sun or after driving. i have not noticed braking problems but am worried that the brakes may fail when needed. ford dealership says there is no known problem with the windstar abs system. i have read several forums where windstar owners are reporting the same problems. my vehicle has 63k miles. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar. the abs brake light and brake light keeps coming on. the only way to get if off is to restart the van i have had it in the shop twice now. the garage ( fiive star ford) in warner robins told me not to worry about it. they replaced the master cylinder last week. that cost me $490.00. it still didn't fix the problem with the lights. *tr

My 2002 ford windstar has had the abs and brake light indicators on my dashboard illuminated. i have had the van inspected and they said this is common in the windstar and that when they are lit up that the abs braking system is not working and is unsafe. *tr

On june 8, 2008, our 2002 windstar experienced the following: abs light went red: brake red light went on. speedometer, and tachometer stopped working. all will require repair to prevent the possibility of fire, crash or break down. *tr

Abs light and tire pressure light are constantly coming on. this has all been checked and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with either. cruise stopped working while driving with it on. i have now read many reports from consumers with the same ford winstar with the same problems. the cruise control concerns me because of the recall of the cruise control switch on one of their trucks and the incidence of fires started because of the cruise control switch in the ford winstar vans. *tr

Brake oil leak from cruise control pressure switch on master cylinder. fire hazard. *tr

2002 ford windstar cruise control, odometer, a/c temp. control stopped working; abs light remains on. the van is leaking brake fluid. i found online that this is a common problem within windstar owners. a contaminated "brake pressure differential deactivation switch" is the probable cause of this problem and in my opinion ford should be responsible for this defect. *tr

Abs system deactivates, abs light and brake light comes on deactivating traction control and abs systems braking distance is increased. this happens frequently 2-3 times daily especially on long comutes.these incidents occur more often in the summer than winter but it does occur. *tr

The abs and brake lights are intermittenly coming on and going off on my 2002 ford windstar sel. this started in may 2008 at 97,000 miles. *tr

Both the yellow abs and red brake warning lights illuminate on the instrument panel. ford dealer code scan revealed a c1185 code: power relay failure within the hcu/ecu. *tr

The abs traction control system intermittently fails. during an unexpected heavy stop of on warmer days the abs traction control system stops responding and the warning light stating the system has been turn off, turns on. the vehicle has to be stopped, turned off then restarted for this to go away. it also has failed under normal driving conditions without braking on hotter days. this seems to be a dangerous problem. *tr

Brake pressure differential deactivation switch leaking causing loss of brake fluid and fluid has wicked into cruise module and abs module causing red brake light, abs light, intermittent speedometer and odometer, complete lack of cruise control, loss of abs function. replaced bpdds, cruise control now sometimes functional, no other problems fixed. damage caused by leaking fluid still present. *tr

2002 ford windstar with inoperable cruise control, odometer, a/c temp. control, abs light remains on and other related electrical malfunctions. vehicle is leaking brake fluid and i have no doubt i'm experiencing the same problem thousands of other windstar owners are with a contaminated "brake pressure differential deactivation switch". is ford taking responsibility for this manufacturing defect and providing a fix - without charge??? *tr
