We have classified the 76 complaints from 1999 Ford Windstar about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
I bought a 99 winstarr a few months ago and just recently the instrument cluster started dancing, and there is no power t the radio or the cigarette lighter underneath it. i also sprung a trans leak and fixed it but the car sputters then shuts off and i have to restart it
The dealer located in the sandy spring rejected to the take remedy action on the recall 09s09. i complained to the dealer service department that the odometer is malfuntioning when it is in operation. it suddenly cause unknown acceleration when using the cruise control. it is also found out the brake hose is leaking as results of the speed control modification system by the local mechanic shop.
Abs light came on continually for the last 6000 miles. brought the vehicle to ford in plainville, ct and they told me there was no recall and the cost was to include a new computer for an unreasonable dollar amount. still not corrected and i understand that the abs system is not working. have checked other owners and they have the same problem. also have a cruise control system that is not working. have been told that i need a new harness for a cost of over #300. still not activated. *tr
Abs light keeps coming on. replaced all speed sensors and front axle tone rings even rebuild the abs control module. this is costing me allot of money and the abs light still come on even after i have completed all the necessary repairs. ford needs to recall these windstars to make the necessary repairs for these vehicles. *tr
My battery has been dying due to bad sensors, when i did get it started it became stuck high revving ,the car accelerated and smashed into the curb in front of me, and the brakes wouldn't work so even when i stepped on the brakes to put in reverse the car went flying into the curb behind me, i finally got the vehicle to a complete stop by pulling up the emergency brake. then i had the car towed to my house. *tr
My 19yr old daughter was traveling to new jersey from indiana on rt.70. when using the cruise control attempted to exit for a rest stop when she applied the break the abs light came on and the cruise control did not disengage. she had committed to the exit ramp thank god she was able to move back off the ramp just in time to miss the over pass barrier. she had to ride the shoulder shutting down the ignition once she did that she was able tob resue. she did not use the cruise control again and but then the engine light came on a cold start. i check the code and dtcs found wade bank one and two lean found a bad pcv valve and replaced it. but when reading the codes found 9 additional codes c1185 c1198 c1194 c1254 c1256 c1250 c1242 c1214 and c1210. i then called the ford dealership and checked for recalls. finding 3 i followed up having two being serious and having to do with speed control rear subframe and rear support. when asking the service advisor what these codes meant he had no clue he said and without a costly scanner charge the tech had no idea. so as always i hit the inter net andeasily found numerous complaints . . . i was a service advisor for honda for 5yrs and a tech for 10 prior. i never put my customers life on the line wth? is ford teaching these men? i will have to inspect and repair this vehicle myself being disabled this will not come easy. i don't trust them at all anymore. my family's life is to important to have a money hungry company kill them. and once repairs are finished i will sell it and buy a honda. yes honda is not perfect but i have never seen the company ever mislead customers intentionally as this and when they messup they cover their customers and fix it right.unreal. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford windstar. while driving 30 mph, the contact attempted to reduce speed by depressing the brake pedal. the contact stated he began to smell a burning odor and the vehicle failed to brake immediately. the vehicle was not repaired nor was the failure diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the incident but informed the contact that the vehicle was not listed under recall nhtsa campaign number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
The engine carriage is rusted out, and the rear axle is cracked due to rust. the main arm of the ball joint is completely pulled away from the frame because of the rust. i contacted baab ford in reed city michigan, because i was told by the mechanic i took it to originally that this was a recalled product. baab ford told me yes it is a recall issue, but no they wont fix my vehicle because the vin doesn't come up as one of the vehicles effected by the recall. i contacted ford motor company as they had advised me, ford motor company told me, my vehicle isn't on the recall list, regardless of the fact that it has both of the problems that 1998 - 2003 ford windstar was recalled for. the vehicle speeds up whenever it hits a bump and also pulls towards the center line especially on slippery roads or where loss of traction occurs. it also wears out tires every 2 weeks. *tr
Abs light comes on after engine warm-up and remains on. after engine compartment has cooled, light is off at restart. it will then come on again after engine warmup. speed control is intermittently inop. *tr
I start my 99 ford windstar with my wife inside the vehicle and my two daugthers and my son when i saw smoke comming true the hood then i open the hood and my surprise was the brake pressure differential deactivation switch on fire i was so scared then i just take my kids and wife out of the vehicle and comback to stop the fire thanks god i have fire extinguisher close but we have to stop this from happening to someone else. *tr
1999 ford windstar: the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (scds) (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) has leaked an excessive amount of brake fluid. the fluid accumulates on the power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the cruise control has failed and we are fearful that this leaking brake fluid will cause a fire. *tr
Abs and trac failure lights come on, windows won't go up and down, cruise control cuts in and out and the check engine light flashes when cruise is on. ford refuses to deal with this situation and stand by their product. *tr
Abs light illuminated a few months after a recall was complied by ford. the recall consist of replacing a brake pressure switch, cruise control part, and abs module. *tr
3 transmissions...multiple repairs all of which ford is aware and caused by faulty design. recalled for axle and frame rotting. ford used epoxy and a brace to "repair". unsafe repair! warranty offered is only 12 months, so ford also agrees it wont last. frame and axle should last the life of vehicle. this is a dangerous vehicle and ford isnt willing to take any resposibility. they have kown about these problems for years, and are now saying they arent responsible.
*cruise control stopped working beginning of 2011, never came back on. *abs light turns on/off intermittently. started about 1 year ago; 5/2010. *side door locks don't work correctly and get stuck (have to manually pull them up). started approx. 7/2010. *passenger door does not unlock from the outside with automatic lock button or keys. started approx. 1/2011. *heater only works in back, not front. started approx. 10/2010. *open regulator window loosened and broke off, shattering, while on interstate. bought replacement window, but the regulator assembly does not come in single parts, so i have not purchased a replacement plastic securer to hold the rear of the window on. 5/7/2011. i feel there is more i'm forgetting, but i can't think of anything at this time. *tr
Recall repair work was completed for 09v399000 on vehicle. vehicle now has abs light and transaction control light. ford advises issue where abs module is faulty, as well as traction control concerns. however ford cannot diagnose transaction control until abs module is replaced but will not cover the abs module due to it not being in the recall. however, the vehicle is experiencing the same issues as other consumer complaints referencing this recall. i continue to have abs issues as well as continue to smell a burning smell (similar to plastic burning). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford windstar. the contact stated that the vehicle lunged forward violently. the failure would occur sporadically and at any given speed. the vehicle would sway abnormally when being driven and the steering wheel would often seize without warning. additionally, the contact experienced the vehicle lunging forward and violently jerking when in drive or reverse on multiple occasions. the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 11v030000 (structure) however, the failure persisted. the manufacturer advised the contact that the timeframe had expired for the contact to have additional repairs performed that had not been scheduled within the required timeframe for the recall repairs. the vehicle was to be inspected, diagnosed and repaired. the approximate failure mileage was not available. updated 8/14/14*cn updated 8/22/2014 *js
Recall id# 09v399000 was completed few months ago, now abs on dash is on few minutes after the vehicle is put in motion. dealer pinpointed trouble to abs control module. overheating of the board could be the result of the leaking scds on the module connector. dealer wants to charge me $ 1,000 to fix the problem. *tr
I have a ford windstar year 1999. about two weeks ago the two brake lights went on, i had a fuse # 10 blown and a non working speedometer dial.( the cruise control has three months that is not working) i did take a look at the owner's manual. in the manual i read that reason for the break light to come on was the lower level of brake fluid in the reservoir and so it was. i added some brake fluid and the light was off. in the mean time i did checked the fuse panel and i found this fuse #10 was blown and i replaced it, but half an hour later i got a blown fuse again. also the abs light was on and so i decided to see a mechanic. i did go to a repair shop and i was told that my van has a serious problem. scds under the master cylinder has developed a bad leak. the scds switch is leaking and that may cause a fire sooner or later. this leak has caused a short and a fuse trip #10 this break fluid leak has wicked down the wires to the abs module. i was told that this leaky switch has caused all the problem in my van. speedometer, cruise control and abs brake system are not working. i was told that there may be a recall on this problems. i do not knowany thing about it. i know that it was a recall issued on august 27,2010 in regard with rear axel. i never got any notice from ford co. i had a broken rear axel on march 2010 and i was saved by good luck. i paid a lot of money to fix it. ford did not pay a dime for this problem. ford never sends me any recall notices. i'm never going to buy ford cars again. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford windstar. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign numbers: 11v030000 (structure), 10v385000 (suspension), and 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the contact stated that the vehicle was no longer owned due to numerous failures. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and an independent mechanic where several unknown repairs were performed, but failed to repair the vehicle. the failure mileage was not available.
99 ford windstar has been having numerous battery problems in the last 6 months. went through 3 batteries and 1 alternator. took to ford dealership who couldn't find a problem. told me there were no recalls for speed control deactivation switch. my 99 windstar was not included in this recall. turns out car died today on major highway with electrical problem. burning smell under hood. i am complaining because i deliberately asked about the speed control deactivation switch recall 2 weeks ago at ford dealership and was told by dominick that my car was not included in that recall. on oct. 13 2009 my car was included in that recall. my abs light has been on for ages... my car has not been at ford dealership since oct 13 2009 so i know the recall was not previously performed. the dealer is courtesy ford in sanford florida... the car was towed to that location. it is sunday so the dealership is closed.... *tr
After the initial recall work was performed on my 1999 ford windstar mini van the abs light is still lit. according to the paperwork i received from the dealership they installed a jumper harness to correct the problem for recall 09s09 but it has not been corrected since the light is still on. *tr
I took my 1999 ford windstar in for recall work . they just put in a fuse link. since then my speedometer and tech have been going wild and i am getting and my abs light always comes on. my cruise control don't work right either among other issues like lean codes! *tr
Smoking from under hood, leaking fluid, non-working speedometer, odometer, gas sensor, and oil sensor. flickering dome lights while driving. scds is under recall, but the fluid that was leaking from this malfunctioning sensor has caused all sorts of issues. fluid leaked on to abs box and the wires causing shorts and blown fuses. all damage has been said to stem from the original recall, but the recall doesn't cover the full damage that has been caused by the faulty scds's. *tr
tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford windstar. the contact received notification of nhtsa recall campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control) october 2009 and took the vehicle in for repairs. on a separate occasion, while driving at approximate speeds of 55-65 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle began abnormally surging and losing brake fluid. in may 2010, the contact was driving at relatively low, unknown speeds when the vehicle abnormally accelerated in reverse and crashed into two yard fences. the vehicle sustained major damage and the contact was not injured. the vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the cruise control mechanism was disconnected. there were two more failures. in addition, the contact stated there were never any unintended acceleration incidents prior to the recall repair. the failure mileage was 106,000 and the current mileage is 113,000. updated 07/26/10. *lj updated 09/07/10
On december 17, 2009 we took our 1999 ford windstar in to the cerritos ford dealership in ca. we received a letter from ford that our vehicle was being recalled (recall # 09s09) and as it turned out the van was leaking and they replaced the leaking switch and harness. before the work was even done, i told them that we were concerned about the abs light that was on our dashboard. the recall summary states that the "with a leaking scds, dealers will also inspect the abs control module connector and repair as necessary. repairs will be completed free of charge." on our invoice, the dealership failed to note our concern regarding the abs and never stated whether or not they inspected the abs control module connector. although i am aware that there could be other factors causing the abs light to show up, i am deeply concerned that the recall was not fully completed. i am aware that the issues we are having could result in a car fire. i just want confirmation that the inspection was done and if the connector needs to be repaired, that ford takes care of it with no out-of-pocket from me. i have contacted both the service manager at cerritos & ford co. directly. i was told the recall was completed although they cannot say whether or not the inspection of the abs control module connector was performed. they said i could pay for an expensive diagnostic test through the dealership where they could determine if there are issues with the abs that were a result of fraud or poor workmanship. either way, all of this will cost me a lot of money for something i asked to have taken care of at the time i brought the van in for the recall. i'm really frustrated and concerned about this as well as other issues pertaining to this van that i believe are recall related. our tail-lights won't work despite new bulbs, our brakes sometimes sputter and don't always stop immediately. we've had 4 close calls related to our brakes and i wonder how much of this is recall-related. *tr
This is a follow-up complaint, regarding ford recall 09s09, the speed control deactivation switch (scds). our 1999 ford windstar was serviced on 11dec09. the vehicle's abs dash light is still coming on, indicating that the system turned off. lately, the abs light is coming on more frequently, within minutes of start-up and a short driving distance (within a mile away of the previous starting point). as a result, the vehicle does not have abs braking capability or traction control capability (as the traction control turns off along w/ the abs system). the recall service was completed by performance ford, 11910 w. dodge road omaha ne 68154. at this time, we are considering another repair shop, as we believe the ford dealer failed to adequately repair the recall and have subsequently put our family at risk. the dealer inspection found the following upon initial repair: found switch leaking with no heat damage. inspect servo switch no heat damage and no heat damage to abs connector applied grease to both connectors ok after repair. please press ford to have their dealers complete the recall and repair as necessary, because they are not completing the work as promised. *tr
I have a ford windstar 1999 with abs light comes on. i recently received a letter from ford for recall of a speed control deactivation switch as it poses a leak in brake fluid which may cause fire. i went to dealer close by and he said he change the wire harness and as far as the abs light diagnosis he charge me $46.95 and come up with a code c1185which pinpoint to abs module failure and he gave me estimate to replace it ~$800. after i went back home and looking at the safety report and other report from customer like me i understand the recall . so i did call the dealer 's service and explain to him why he did not tell me that there is a link between abs and the deactivation switch and brake fluid leak , he told me that he was not aware of any such problem as well as no letter from ford explain the such connection he promise me to look at it more careful next day and i wait to hear the news but no satisfaction as he comes up that the abs module failure is not related to the recall switch . so i decide to call the ford customer service and with along discussion they denied me the right to fix the abs module or to deal with my problem or t least give me back the diagnostic fees for the abs light i feel there is a cover by ford service to denied any damage caused by the leak to the abs module or connector and they fight so hard on all levels to denied such right please help in including the statement of checking the abs module and connector with the recall once for good and stop them from manipulate the safety order for the recall. *tr
The throttle cable of my 1999 ford windstar frayed and caused the throttle to stick. the frayed outer part of the wire came off leaving sharp metal ends that allowed the cable to become stuck in the plastic sheath. had to be pulled out by hand. no injury occurred but could have if on the high way. *tr
Intermittent abs warning light. already had vehicle serviced for recall 09v399000, but continue to get intermittent abs warning light. *tr
1999 ford windstar minivan abs light keeps coming on which is blowing a fuse causing my speedometer, odometer and cruise control not to work. after much internet research this looks to be a common problem with catastrophic results if not disabled. after reading these results i immediately had someone disconnect the abs module under the hood which disabled my abs brake system to prevent a fire. in turn my odometer and speedometer are now working but more importantly a possible fire was prevented! i would appreciate attention being taken in this matter seeing as how it is not the first time this problem is being reported. *tr
1999 ford windstar. last week of july/2009, had ford dealer replaced front rotors & pads + rear shoes & machined rear drums. within 1st week after brakes job abs light began cycling on & off. after the 4th week, the abs light stayed solid. cruise control is also not functioning. ford dealer says might have to replace abs control module. read somewhere that controls of these two components might be affected by brake fluid leaking from master cylinder into a switch thereafter moisture will accumulate in the switch causing a short blowing fuse #10. also read that this brake fluid leakage might lead to a fire subsequently. repairs have been quoted to be high. will repair once have sufficient money saved. *tr
I bought a ford windstar van from a used car dealer by the name of ray price in dec. of '07. we had been looking for a van for some time and i had looked for any recalls before we purchased. i found none listed. we paid off the car last month, and that's when the trouble started. i have taken it to the garage 3 times in the last month because it kept stalling when it would idle for longer periods of time. the mechanic fixed the intake manifold seals and the surrounding parts, replacing them as needed each time. i also had the spark plugs and plug wires replaced just in case. on thursday july 23rd, my husband replaced the brakes on the front. he drove the van all day with no problems other than the occasional stall. we stopped for milk at the grocery store on our way home from my work and had been inside for only 5-10 minutes when the manager called out that our car was on fire. we ran outside, and the firemen got it out, but the car is a total loss. i spoke to my mechanic and the fire investigator and both told me that they had come across a recall that had been out a few years ago about my van. it seems that ford recalled the cruise control mechanism in the engine because it caused electrical fires just like what happened to mine. the fire chief said it looked exactly like what he had seen before when it happened. since then, ford has denied that there was a recall and won't look into the matter. my car had been on this lot for at least a year before we bought it. if the recall went out, it was never fixed, and a lawyer has already said it is ford's responsibility to take care of the matter. can you check on this for me? *tr
1999 ford windstar abs light on, odometer inop, speedometer inop, 15 amp fuse constantly blows. brake fluid leaking on vehicle speed control
Loss of brake fluid, brake light on after service, brake light red, 15 amp fuse blowing out, smoke coming from under the hood or from engine compartment, speedometer and odometer stopped working, cruise control will not activate or deactivates without warning, abs warning light is on. *tr
Speed control deactivation switch on 1999 ford windstar was leaking brake fluid. problem found when abs light came on and speedometer, odometer, brake-shift interlock, air conditioner and a few other items no longer functioned. apparently fluid caused a short that activated a fuse, disabling these items. requested ford repair at their cost as switch is same as was recalled under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v388000. they refused since recall does not include windstar. switch was replaced, at my cost, and problems appears resolved. *tr
Cruise control wiring harness started to smoke and melt. caught it on time thank god. i know there have been recalls about this on other vehicles but not on the windstars. ford motor company needs to be made aware of this. this is a safety issue and they know it. and on top of that it is about $300 to get this repaired after it burns which it is not affordable these days. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 ford windstar. while driving approximately 35 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from the front end of the vehicle. after closer inspection of the vehicle, he noticed that the wiring harness leading to the master cylinder was melted. the failure led to a small fire under the hood. his model was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control). the contact still has possession of the melted wiring harness. the vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer to determine the cause of the failure. the failure and current mileages were 162,000. updated 12/02/08. *lj updated 12/03/08. *jb
My cruise control stopped working on my 1999 ford windstar van, i would smell a electrical fire smell after driving it and a little smoke under the hood. my dada and myself checked and found a small brake fluid leak that was getting on a electrical connection. this was also causing some fuses to blow. i went online and found out it was the abs ecm module switch under the brake fluid reservoir. i purchased a new switch and replace it, and have not had any more problems with it. *tr
Brake fluid leaking out of the speed control brake differential deactivation switch. possible fire hazard. *tr
I have a red brake light intermittently illuminating, and my cruise control quit working. the brake switch just below the master cylinder has evidence of leakage and it is seeping onto the wiring and speed control box. if it continues without service serious damage is eminent. *tr
Brake pressure deactivation switch leaking fluid causing cruise control not to work and possibly causing problems with the ecm control module. also a possible risk of fire caused by the leaking fluid into the wiring for the ecm control module causing it to short out. abs brakes not working due to faulty ecm control module. parts have been priced, but no repairs have been scheduled yet due to a lack of money to pay for repairs. *tr
1999 ford windstar brake, abs brake stays on, cruise control went out, and speedometer/odometer went out. fuse blew and continues to blow. ford has a redesigned brake pressure switch, but will not say it is a recall. *tr
I was preparing to turn over the ownership of my 1999 ford windstar van to my son. after going over the vehicle and checking the fluid levels, i remembered the fact that the van had used an inappropriate amount of brake fluid over the past months. i checked the brakes, lines, calipers, etc to find the trouble. i was made aware of the areas i should search because i had a recall notice about my e150 van warning of possible failure and danger of fire from a cruise control cutout switch mounted on the bottom of the master cylinder. i checked the fuse box on the windstar because my instrument cluster had failed, i saw a blown fuse but the fuse bax did not have what the fuse controlled printed on it. i replaced the fuse and started the car. immediately, i saw and smelled smoke coming from under the hood. i shut off the ignition. because the master brake cylinder is not accessible for service unless the windshield wiper panel assembly, i removed the assembly and saw that the wiring to this switch on the bottom of the master brake cylinder had burned. i removed the switch and it was so burned that it fell apart in my hands. the seal in the switch had failed and allowed the brake fluid to contact the switch contacts and also leak out. i replaced the switch and wiring at my expense because the switch was not on ford's recall list even though it is the same exact problem and switch as in the e150 which was under recall. *tr
(1) started vehicle and smoke started to come from under the hood. was determined to be the cruise control switch issue that has been found and recalled in many other ford models. (2) had cruise disconnected and took to ford dealership to have replaced (3) ford dealership replaced, but i had to pay for it since my particular vehicle has not been recalled. service tech did say the switch was burned up. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 ford windstar. while driving 75 mph, the contact smelled smoke. he pulled over and exited the vehicle, but did not find anything wrong. he returned to the vehicle and drove off with the cruise control engaged. when he arrived to his destination, the vehicle began to shake and rattle. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic, who stated that the cruise control switch was burnt. after driving home from the mechanic, the failure intensified. the current mileage was 100,000 and failure mileage was 82,500.
I am writing to you concerning a complaint i have against ford motor company. i own a 99 ford windstar. approximately 117,000 miles. he cruise control recently caught on fire. it was at five star ford now being repaired. i have a letter to you drafted, however, it was to long for this field. please contact me, and i will forward it.*ak
Not only does my 99 windstar stall and jerk and will not pick up speed properly but the check engine light will not go off and the abs light will come on after i start the van and stay on as well. if i drive over 55 the o/d light flashes. when i take off from a light the o/d light flashes and the van will not pick up speed and then it jerks into gear. if i am at an incline the vehicle will not go into gear or it will make a real loud noise and jerk into gear. if anyone else who is having the same problem would like to file a class action suit against ford about this problem. *tr
The antilock brakes light stays on,and abs does not work. ford did recall related to the brakes fluid causing a fire, now the cruise control does not work.abs is a safety issue . this is a manufacturer defect and should be corrected. please don't wait until more people die. recall this shabby workmanship. *tr
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle speed control relay on the master brake cylinder caught on fire after the vehicle was parked and turned off. the contact noticed smoke from the engine compartment and saw fire coming from the relay when the hood was opened. the service dealer and manufacturer were notified. the manufacturer referred the contact to nhtsa.
