Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2005 Ford Taurus

Throttle will stick and car will continue as if on cruise control. it is a random event. so far, have had the throttle cable replaced, fuel pressure "thing", and had the throttle body cleaned, and throttle continues to randomly stick. *tr

Throttle was sticking and accelerating by itself while driving.then the engine would rev to about 4000rpm. i had to push down on the brakes with both feet to get it to stop. this happened numerous times over 2 days. if the gas pedal was wiggled this would stop it from revving. took the car to a ford dealership and the cruise control cable was broken, causing the throttle to bind. *tr

This happened at around 1:45 am on saturday, in another state, commuting to work. vehicle accelerates without having foot on gas pedal, pulled over on side of road and turned car off, tried to start ignition and car engine revs up and is really loud. i turned car off and sat for a while hoping that car would start up again normally. this has happened many times, even called local ford dealership and no one had any idea was told to bring vehicle in and pay $138.35 for a diagnostic, which would go towards repairs. other mechanics did not seem to have a clues. this has been happening quite a bit, but the latest incident was on 02/16/2013. had no problems for a little while, but started up again. very scary. i have been very fortunate to be able to pull car to the side of the road to safety. too many issues with this car. someone needs to do something about this issue, before someone gets hurt badly or dies. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated the vehicle accelerated independently. the vehicle became unresponsive to braking attempts. while depressing the brakes, the vehicle did not stop until the brakes released and the contact felt an abnormal push-back from the brakes. the vehicle was not inspected or repaired for the failure. the failure and the current mileages were 49,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the vehicle failed to decelerate and drove down a hill and into a field before stopping. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000.

On the morning of january 30, 2013; i was driving to work approximately at 8 am and noticed my car became difficult to stop. it appeared to be accelerating when i was not touching the gas and had to apply excessive force on the brake to allow the car to stop. immediately upon releasing the brake pedal the car would quickly accelerate to 15-20 mph. this continued on and off for my entire 15 mile commute to the office. stepping heavily on the gas pedal seemed to stop the problem (seemed as if the pedal was stuck down). placing the car into neutral was the only sure way to stop the acceleration. on january 31, 2013; the same problem occurred again. however, this time it happened at higher speeds. i was driving at 65 mph without having to touch the gas as if the cruise control was set to 65. however, the cruise was off. again...heavily pressing the gas pedal stopped the acceleration. again, placing the car into neutral was the only sure way to stop the problem. both mornings were foggy/rainy and very humid. the problem is intermittent, but i believe ford needs to immediately correct this issue with recalls as a person who is less comfortable driving or just not very calm could definitely have an accident if they panic. *tr

Driving down the road when i accelerated the car continued to accelerate after i took my foot off the gas pedal. this happened to my girlfriend earlier when she drove the car. i was able to stop the acceleration by stomping on the gas pedal twice very hard. my girlfriend had to shift into neutral when it happened to her. this is an ongoing problem with this car and happens randomly at different speeds and conditions. when it happens the engine revs to about 4,000 rpms when shifted into neutral before going to normal. i did some research and discovered that as of march 2012 there were over 395,000 complaints about this and that the nhtsa was investigation. this is a common problem and well documented. i am a ford fan but am very disappointed this has not been addressed properly especially in the wake of the toyota recalls for similar problems a few years ago. i contacted the nhtsa this morning to discover that: nhtsa campaign id number: pe12005 "a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted. accordingly, this investigation is closed. the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances. " i am asking that this case be reopened before someone is killed and that ford be forced to do the right thing and issue a recall if they won't do it voluntarily. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the rpm suddenly increased and the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the contact depressed the brake pedal repeatedly but the brakes failed to respond. the contact depressed the brake pedal with both feet and was able to stop the vehicle. the failure occurred intermittently three different times. the contact stated the engine revved up while the vehicle was parked as well. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 82,000.

Early in the morning of jan 16 2013 as my husband drove the car, the engine seemed to be racing for a few minutes but not accelerating on its own. it normalized and he though nothing more of it. later that day my 18 year old daughter was driving the car at a speed of approximately 45 miles per hour when she slowed to make a right turn and coming out of the turn the car began to accelerate on it's own. it approached speeds of over 55 mph in a 30 mph zone. luckily there was not much traffic at the time. she immediately applied the brakes as hard as she could and luckily is a strong girl and was able to slow it enough to somewhat control it and bring it to an area where she shut the car off. she states that "it fought her hard to continue accelerating and was out of control". she called my husband and i and upon arrival to the site, my husband started the car. in park, it raced as though the pedal was to the floor although we verified it was in fact in it's normal position when no pressure is applied. after smacking it with his foot very hard a few times the engine seemed to normalize. this was a very scary experience for my daughter. *tr

Hello, i'm submitting this report due to the recent recall of ford taurus vehicles with the gas pedal sticking. please expand this recall to include other years, specifically my vehicle's (2005). on numerous occasions, i have been inching along in traffic or have removed my foot from the gas pedal only to discover that the car suddenly accelerates. i have narrowly avoided a car accident because of this problem. at first i thought it was me, however the same thing happened when my boyfriend was driving the car. he had to press down on the brakes hard and we could still feel the car attempting to accelerate- at a red light. i have discovered tapping on the gas will usually correct the problem, however it is very happenstance when it occurs and is very frightening. please expand the recall, there are newer years' that are also affected. (as a side-note, i purchased my vehicle used and it did not come with floor mats, so this is not an issue of a floor mat being stuck.) thank you. *tr

Starting january 7, 2013 i noticed my gas pedal was stuck and the car suddenly starting to accelerate. i pushed in the gas pedal to unstick it. later that day this same issue occurred again. i took my car to the ford quick lane for them to figure out why my car suddenly started to accelerate without my control. they could not find anything wrong with my car or why this issue was happening. throughout the week this issue continued and on friday january 11, 2013 i dropped my car off for 2 days at the quick lane again. they could not get the car to suddenly accelerate. when i picked up my car on saturday i was told that the cruise control cable was broken, but that cable shouldn't have any affect on the sudden acceleration of the car. so as of right now tuesday january 15,2013 my car is still accelerating on its own and i have to put the car in neutral just to get the engine to quit accelerating. *tr

This problem first appeared a bit over a year ago. date above is not exact. after speaking with a mechanic, my husband disconnected the cruise control cable and the problem appeared to go away. i've never received any type of recall notice on the vehicle. now i have approximately 137k miles on the vehicle. in november of 2013, the transmission died. this past sunday, on the way home from church, the vehicle accelerated to 4500 rpm's while going approximately 30 miles an hour in a residential zone. it took 2 feet on the brakes, had to make a quick turn and put the vehicle in neutral. i cannot drive the vehicle. please help us find a solution. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the rpm increased to 4,500 and the vehicle suddenly accelerated. the vehicle was placed into neutral and then functioned normally. the failure was experienced numerous times. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 63,000 and the current mileage was 65,000. the vin was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving various speeds, the accelerator pedal became stuck, causing the vehicle to accelerate independently. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 110,000. .. updated 02-07-13 *bf the consumer stated the vehicle has been repaired. the cruise control cable on the throttle body detached. the vehicle was repaired by reattaching the cable with a clip. updated 02/13/2013 *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that the vehicle randomly accelerated without warning. the contact had to shift the vehicle into neutral in order to keep it from accelerating. the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic but they were unable to determine what caused the failure. the contact stated that the failure occurred several times within a two week period. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 84,000.

The transmission of my vehicle, without warning or prior history of failure, acted like i'd moved the gear into neutral while driving the legal speed limit on the interstate. engine would rev, but nothing happened. coasted to a stop on the side of the road without the ability to accelerate or move the vehicle to a safer location. there are at least 150 people who have had a similar experience as me but ford will not issue a recall despite a clear fault with the transmission for this make and model. http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/taurus/2005/transmission/transmission_failure.shtml. *tr

Hello, i have recently purchased a used 2005 ford taurus. the problem is that the car accelerates without me touching the gas pedal, this is a very dangerous problem especially with snow and ice on the ground. i noticed it happens when i take my foot of the brake at stop signs, the car will start to accelerate very suddenly reaching speeds up to 40mph until i step on the brake. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle erroneously accelerated to 80 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 70,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the accelerator pedal became jammed and caused the vehicle to accelerate to 40 mph. the contact immediately depressed the brakes and powered the vehicle off. the vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileages were approximately 127,000. the vin was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that the accelerator pedal became stuck to the floorboard numerous, times. the contact was able to avoid previous crashes by shifting the gear into neutral to release the accelerator pedal however, he recently crashed into the rear of another vehicle because he was unable to release the accelerator pedal. there was no injury report. the contact stated that the mechanic replaced the throttle position sensor, but the failure was not corrected. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 66,735 and the current mileage was 146,924.

I was on the interstate going about 70. i put on the cruise control but it wouldn't engage. i tried several times then gave up. not 5 minutes later i tried to go slower, about 65, and the car sped up to 70 on its own. i was confused because the cruise control light was not lit, whereas it was lit when it wouldn't work. i pressed the off button many times but it kept trying to accelerate. my friend was trying to make me pull over but i was scared because the engine was racing and it seemed like the brakes were sluggish. i finally stopped on the shoulder & turned off the car. i was freaking scared because i was in the middle of nowhere. when i turned the car back on it immediately began to race, way up over the 3000 rpms. when i put it into drive it lurched forward. we had to get somewhere, so my friend started driving. i was shaking. it unstuck by itself but continued to do it several times. and i never touched the cruise control again. it does it going 30mph, 60mph, whenever it feels like. i don't have money to fix this & this car has only 50,000 miles on it! i'm scared it's going to do it & the brakes fail when i try to slow down. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the vehicle began to accelerate independently. the contact applied the brake and the vehicle emitted a loud noise from the brakes. the vehicle attempted to continue accelerating. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the throttle body was cleaned. the failure recurred immediately after the repairs. the manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 68,400 and the current mileage was 68,545.

Auto acceleration. *tr

Cruise control cable on this vehicle popped off of the throttle body. i reconnected the cable but it popped off again. i secured the cable away from the throttle body to prevent the throttle from being jammed open. this defect needs to be addressed as a design flaw worthy of a manufacturer recall; failure of the cruise control assembly doesn't simply render the cruise control inoperative, but has the real potential for fatal accidents. as an interim measure the nhtsa should issue a bulletin warning owners of the potential for failure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. while driving approximately 50 mph, the contact removed her foot from the accelerator pedal and noticed that the rpm reading increased as the vehicle abnormally accelerated to 70 mph. the contact applied the emergency brake and was able to come to a stop by driving over a curb. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or repaired. the failure later recurred and the contact crashed into a fence. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician advised the contact that the throttle would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Driving around 35mph vehicle started to accelerate on its own. hit brake but rpm's still climbed. hit brake again and fixed issue. also cruise control stopped working around the same time. has happened 3 times since first incident. have to smash accelerator repeatedly to fix issue. very scary feeling and will not let wife drive kids around in this vehicle. after reading the 100's of complaints on internet describing this exact same issue cannot believe ford has not issued a recall on this problem yet. this is literally an accident waiting to happen. have owned car since 2007 and this is the first major issue we have had with this vehicle. *tr

My wife and i have noticed that the gas pedal sticks as you accelerate at any speed. in addition, out of the blue you notice that the car seems to be revving and sort of moving faster than you are depressing the gas pedal. we bought the car at 9000miles and not until we got to over the 100,000mile point did we start noticing these problems. *tr

I was trying to park the vehicle but when i hit the brakes, it accellorated, then i put it in reverse and it went about 50mph backwards causing me to crash into 2 parked vehicles. it stopped when i put on the emergency brake. *tr

Vehicle speed did not reduce after removing foot from pedal. applied brakes to slow vehicle, and then vehicle resumed acceleration when removed foot from brake. was able to "unstick" throttle by repeatedly tapping accelerator pedal, and also pulling up on it with my foot from underneath. used brakes to come to a stop. mechanic found the cruise control cable had come unattached, possibly getting caught up in the throttle system. cable was reattached. on 10/21/12 cruise control would not engage. 10 miles later vehicle would not de-accelerate. again pumped gas pedal while applying brake pedal. vehicle resumed normal operation. contacted ford after seeing numerous online postings about this, and the nhtsa investigation (march 2012) and was told there is no recall or safety bulletin regarding the dangling cruise control cable getting stuck in the throttle body, but that i could get it repaired at my own expense. *tr

While driving in a 45 mph zone throttle stuck had to brake hard to slow vehicle down put into neutral, engine rpms in excess of 6000 turned off car waited several minutes before restarting. seemed fine however cruise control no longer worked. upon inspection later on the cruise control cable had become disconnected. reconnected cable, problem recurred in residential neighborhood. reconnected again and again problem of stuck accelerator happened, again in a residential area. *tr

Accelerator sticks under acceleration. attempting to pull the accelerator pedal upwards doesn't stop acceleration. had to shift car into neutral or apply brakes. had to have vehicle serviced at ford dealership. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while traveling 55 mph, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the contact was able to slow the vehicle by firmly pressing the accelerator. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the failure could not be replicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the issue. the failure mileage was 113,000 and the current mileage was 114,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact was driving approximately 20 mph when the vehicle abnormally accelerated with an unusual increase in engine rpms. the contact applied the brakes forcefully in order to decelerate and maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. a certified mechanic inspected the vehicle and informed the contact that the throttle became stuck however, after the gear was shifted into neutral, the vehicle began to operate normally. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

Noticed 2 days prior that the cruise control no longer worked. then, the car suddenly hit about 4,000 rpm without my foot on the gas pedal while driving 45 mph. after i braked and pull off the road it was still running high rpm without touching the gas. after i tried to start it again it went straight to 2500 rpm and stayed there, while in park and foot on the brake (not the gas). had to have it towed. very scary, very dangerous. ford need to pay for this/recall it. *tr

Driving appx 25 miles per hour in stop-go traffic, car accelerated as if i had pushed the gas pedal to the floor, tried to brake and had to fight the car for control, veered off the road and put the car into park and engine continued to rev at high rate. turned ignition off and waited. started car and engine continued to rev at high rate. had vehicle towed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph the accelerator pedal became stuck. the driver depressed the brakes with extreme force until she was able to stop the vehicle 15 to 20 minutes later. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the throttle need to be clean which might repair the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 66,700 and the current mileage was approximately 60,787. updated 12/5/12 *cn the consumer stated on november 18, 2012 there was another incident with the throttle sticking. the manufacturer was contacted, and suggested taking the vehicle to the dealer. updated 12/11/2012 *js

After getting off the highway my car begin accelerating on its own. while applying the brake the car remained at 1500 rpms. i put the gear in park and the car went to just over 4000 rpms. i put the car in neutral and it remained around 4000 rpms. this has not caused an accident, but it is very dangerous and not normal. i contacted ford and they told me that they are not aware of this particular problem with 2005 ford tauruses. *tr

I am not really sure when this started to happen, it has been a long time. i thought it was a problem with my gas pedal, have been taking it to mechanic to fix it, never helped. after reading the reports of the cruise control problems being experienced, i realize that what is being reported is exactly what i am experiencing. today it happened when my 19 year old son was driving. he was on the freeway at 70 mph, and when he needed to exit, the vehicle would not slow down. the vehicle accelerates on it's own at times, and at other times the accelerator gets stuck as though the cruise is set, even when you have not set it. thus you wish to slow down, and you are still stuck going 70 mph. i have been stuck in traffic jams and had it start to accelerate, and have to keep the brakes on to slow down. if you try to put it in neutral or park, the rpms race badly. i took it back to my mechanic to try to completely disconnect the cruise control last friday (8-31-12) and it seemed to help for a few days, but now today when my son had the vehicle get stuck at 70, he looked and the cruise control cable had reconnected on it's own. we have now removed the plastic assembly cover to try and prevent this from recurring, after reading suggestions from others online who are also experiencing this problem. in reading other driver's descriptions online, i believe this problem is occurring to many other drivers of the 2005 taurus. i have contacted ford, their response was that i have to take it to the dealer where i purchased it for a complete diagnostic. i called the dealership, they said the diagnostic was $98 and would only do me any good if i can "replicate the problem" while it is at their dealership. as this problem occurs very randomly, i don't see how this is possible. i firmly believe that this problem needs to be further investigated before a tragedy occurs. *tr

During moderate speed travel, let off of accelerator and expected vehicle to begin slowing down. however, it responded by slowly accelerating. then, while trying to stop at an intersection, lurching of the vehicle began when applying the brake. could not make this activity stop without rapidly stepping on the accelerator and releasing. once it stopped, the vehicle seemed ok until the next day when it began again. there did not appear to be any relation to warm up time, etc. took vehicle to ford service center and they could find no problem. i then researched this issue on the internet and found similar complaints that were resolved by fixing the cruise control (this had not occurred to me since the cruise control was not engaged during problem). i then asked the service center to check cruise control circuitry (they said they had with no problems found). i picked up the vehicle, took is immediately to the freeway and engaged the cruise control, and it would not hold speed. i took the vehicle back, the service technician looked under the hood and found the cruise control cable disconnected. he manipulated the throttle and was able to see the cable connect and disconnect randomly; he also stated he could see how the cable would be in the way of normal throttle operation if it was disconnected. the cable has been replaced and the acceleration issue has not recurred. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while was driving 40 mph the vehicle accelerated abnormally. he was able to stop the vehicle by applying the brakes but the vehicle continued to accelerate. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the issue was not under recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 105,000.

Today, august 31st, i was driving off navy base at the naval air station on roosevelt blvd., in jacksonville, florida. it was around 4:00 a.m. and my 2005 ford taurus would not stop. i kept pressing the brakes and the car kept accelerating. the car was accelerating by itself...i was not in control of the car. i kept pressing the brakes... as i came out to the intersection i noticed a concrete truck to my left and i had the yield sign....scared to death and heart pounding i had to put the car in park and turn the car off. in park the car was still accelerating; a loud sound. i would have crashed into that concrete truck. please help. is there some type of recall for this car? this is dangerous...what if my kids was in the car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle began to accelerate independently. the contact applied the brakes until she was able to regain control of the vehicle. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle had not been diagnosed. the manufacturer had not been notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 120,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that as he started the vehicle, the vehicle abnormally accelerated to 40 mph. the contact depressed the brakes and shifted into park but the engine rpms continued to increase excessively. the vehicle was powered off to stop the failure. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 85,000.

While driving the throttle got stuck and the car would accelerate itself. after taking my foot off the pedal the car would continue to accelerate and i had to step on the brake very firmly in order to stop. as i let go of the brake the car would jerk forward as if i was holding it back. if i stopped and put the car in neutral the rpms would continue rising as if i was stepping on the gas. after putting it back into drive the car would jerk or jump forward. after putting the car in park and turning it off the problem was usually solved. this occurs frequently though and usually happens at least once a week. it hasn't led to an accident but it is very dangerous. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the contact attempted to slow down by engaging the brakes. the vehicle failed to respond and the engine rpms increased to 5,000. the contact was able to stop the vehicle and shift into neutral however the rpms remained between 4,000 and 5,000. the vehicle was taken to dealer who diagnosed that the failure was caused by carbon build up in the throttle plates. the dealer performed a carbon treatment however the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 93,200 and the current mileage was 93,320. updated 10/10/12*cn
