On jan 15, 2010, my wife pulled out of our driveway to go to work in our 2002 ford taurus sedan. the left front tire went flat immediately. i quickly put on the compact spare tire so she could get to work on time. two days later, the right front tire went flat all of the sudden about a mile from our house. further investigation showed that each of the tires went flat because the coil spring of the front strut on the associated side of the vehicle broke and stabbed the tire. i know it is hard to believe but within two days, the spring on each of the front struts broke. we are very grateful that this happened at a low speed. it could have been deadly if it had been the week before when we were traveling at 65 mph on a trip to des moines. at the time of the breakage, the ford taurus had 99,300 miles on it. i was able to get the car home and plan to replace the front and rear struts myself. since i will do the work myself, the cost of the repairs will be about $1,000.00 dollars, which includes 4 new struts and two new tires. i will not use ford replacement parts, but will use monroe or moog. *tr

Left front coil spring broke on my 2002 ford taurus sel abruptly while driving down a clear winter road resulting in both front coil springs needing to be replaced along with a sway bar link. so far no other damage to the tires, struts, vehicle, or occupants is apparent. i am being charged for the repairs, plus towing, and rental car while my car sits in the garage for 5 days over the weekend waiting for parts. i see there is a recall on taurus for coil springs up to the 2001 model year and that many other people indicate coil spring failure on model year 2002 and 2003 taurus. why is the recall not extended to cover these model years? *tr
While backing out of a parking spot, i heard a pop and noticed the front end was leaning. when i looked out the door, i concluded it as a flat tire. later the towing company stated it was due to the front driver's side spring breaking and puncturing the tire. the spring, mount, and strut all had to be replaced. ford motor company was notified and stated that my vehicle was not on any recalls. (approx. mileage 107,000) within the past 2 months, both rear springs broke as well. *tr

On sunday morning i went to get a paper, i started to back the 2002 ford taurus out of my driveway, when i heard a loud noise from the front of the car. i thought it was from ice build up and the cold weather. while driving down the road i could hear some noise coming from the front drivers side. i went about two more blocks to the gas station to get the paper, as i pulled in the parking lot the drivers side front tire went flat. i changed the tire, to my surprise the whole inside of a new tire was torn thru all the way around. after further inspection to see what caused this, my coil spring was broke and the sharp edge of the spring tore the inside of the tire all the way around. i spun the sharp edges of the spring to the inside away from the spare tire so i could get it home and to the repair shop. monday morning i drove the car to the repair shop to get it fixed, i was told by them that there might be a recall on the coil springs. i was flying out of state on vacation, when i returned they told me the recall only was on the 1999-2001 ford taurus. the shop changed the front coil springs, strut bearings and aligned the front end. i had to go to another shop to get another new tire and have it balanced. i called fords 1-800 number took my information, but was told no recall, you didn't bring it in to a ford dealer to be repaired, and its not under warranty. i could not get any answers to my questions, what would have happened if i was traveling 55mph and this happened?, and what changed in the coil springs from the 2001 taurus and the 2002 taurus springs. *tr
I went to buy new tires for my son's 2002 taurus today. i was informed from the tech at the tire store that the passenger coil spring was broken. i told him to replace both front coil springs and strut mounts. the repairs are going to be in the neighborhood of $840.00. i will have the exact price come monday. in the mean time, i was looking through this site and was blown away by the number of complaints on this issue. i can't believe that this agency or ford has not done anything in regards to it. i am going to complain to the ford dealer come monday and hope to get the ball rolling for a recall. *tr
Both front coil springs broke at different times and punctured the side of the tires (unfixable). the car was not moving in either case. *tr

I was pulling out of a driveway in my vehicle, and as i backed out of my parking spot i heard a popping noise. by the end of the driveway i knew there was something wrong, so i got out to check. the front left spring on my 2002 ford taurus had broken and sliced my tire open, causing the popping noise i had heard. as a result of this, my car was not drivable. my vehicle had to be towed to a repair facility, and it will cost $350 for a new tire, new springs, a front end alignment and labor. had i been traveling on an expressway going 70 mph this could have been fatal. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford taurus. the contact stated that she heard a loud banging noise while driving 5 mph. upon exiting the vehicle, she noticed that the front driver side coil spring had fractured and pierced the tire. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where three of the four coil springs were replaced. the fourth coil spring fractured approximately two years later. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000.
2002 ford taurus - front strut and coil spring failure. on 12/31/09 as i was backing out of driveway the right front coil strut spring snapped and punctured the tire. (tire was 6 mos old with only about 9000 miles of use) i had the vehicle serviced at a local mechanic shop then on the same day and within hours of first event as i was backing up the left spring snapped and punctured the new tire i had just purchased. i had purchased two new tires since i had to change the tires as a pair. i now have had to purchase a third new tire to replace the new one on left side that was punctured in the second incident. the break point of both springs is identical to the point where the spring broke the metal is snapped identically in the exact same spot on each spring and the fracture line at the break point is the exact same on each broken piece. i have saved the pieces of the spring. i find it very suspect that the springs would snap within hours of each other at the exact same spot on each spring. all told the damages incurred will amount to over $600. i am extremely fortunate that this did not occur while driving as just a day prior i had returned home on a 250 mile highway trip. *tr
I have a 2002 ford taurus. while backing out of the driveway, the left front coil spring broke and ripped apart the whole front tire. the car was undriveable and had to be towed to a garage. i was told by the mechanics that this is a pretty common problem with 2002 taurus and that the front strut assembly had to be replaced on both sides and also sway link installed. total cost for labor, parts and towing was $910.54 plus the cost of a new tire. the mechanic also said that i will need a wheel alignment. the broken coil spring looked brand new and was not rusted. i,m lucky this happened in the driveway and not when the car was being driven 65 mph down the highway. when i called ford motor co. they said that there is no recall on bad coil springs for 2002 ford taurus. i checked the internet and found alot of complaints about broken coil springs on the 2002 taurus and feel this is a safety issue because the broken coil spring will immediately rip apart the front tire and could cause serious injury if traveling on a highway. *tr
The front right coil spring broke on my 2002 ford taurus, causing my tire to have one side completely sliced off and blow out. upon getting this fixed, the mechanic noticed the back right spring was also broken. i had not had any collisions or anything to cause this. upon searching the web, i discovered that there was a recall on years up to 2001 for ford taurus's on this problem. i believe the recall should be extended to at least 2002. the parts were replaced on both broken springs, but it took 12 days to get it done! *tr

2002 ford taurus. both rear coil springs broke december 2009 and january 2010.. had to have both coils and struts replaced and stabilizer bar, over $2,000. front one broke and punctured/ruined tire february 2010, requiring a tow to dealer mechanic. luckily the front one broke while in driveway and not while driving. seems a bit too coincidental for 3 to break in such a short time. i don't feel safe, so had the other front one replaced before it snaps. another over $2,000 bill. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford taurus. the contact stated the front driver side tire was flat. while attempting to replace the tire, the contact found that the front coil springs were fractured. the dealer replaced the coil springs. the failure mileage was 103,000 and the current mileage was 109,000.
Backed out of garage, front of car shook then left front end dropped. the tow truck driver retrieved a piece of the broken spring out of the tire, which was the cause of the puncture. this is the only occurrence under current ownership. to correct the problem, the car had to be towed to the garage where the left front spring and tire were replaced. in addition, the sway bar link was broken when the spring broke therefore this part also had to be replaced. the blessing here is that this defect occurred while backing out of my own garage rather than a highway--hence greatly decreasing my risk of personal injury. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford taurus. the driver-side front springs fractured while reversing out of a parking space at 4 mph. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. the technician discovered that the passenger rear springs had fractured also. the manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 55,000.
Last week a front coil on my taurus fractured--very likely due to inadequate corrosion protection--and protruded into my tire--shredding the sidewall of the front left tire. if we had been driving at a higher speed, this would likely have lead to serious injury or death to myself, my wife, or my 9 month old child. i have been unable to obtain proper guidance as to if ford motor company will include my vehicle in its customer satisfaction program 03m02--or any other program that provided for extended warranty coverage of the front coil springs for certain 2000-2003 ford vehicles due to manufacturing defect. a cursory search of the internet--specifically the national highway traffic safety administration's (nhtsa) website--uncovered that this is a widespread problem --as evidenced by ford's recall of taurus's from 1999-2001. *tr

I am seeking info on my 2002 ford taurus wagon. i had a maine state inspection on 10/28/09 and passed.this was done at vip auto parts in scarborough, maine. i drove 10 miles to my daughters home on the maine turnpike at 65 mpr. when i left and started the car the left front tire blew up, sounding like a shotgun had been discharged. l called a towing company as the car would not forward or back. i asking if i am entitled to reimbursement thru ford? i certainly believe i should as i have been informed by four mechanics that if the strut/coils assembly had let go while on the turnpike at 65 miles per hour my wife and i would most likely have been killed. i have also been told there had been a recall fro this car fro this issue for 1998-2001 fords. *tr
