Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 1999 Ford Ranger

Rear of truck is rotting away to nothing. had the rear of the frame plated a few years ago where the shackle brackets bolt on. now i noticed one of the fuel tank straps hanging. the crossmember that holds it is rotted away to nothing. took the truck to my mechanic. he called me after about an hour & told me the truck was junk. the whole frame & crossmembers from the cab back are rusted horribly. he told me not to even drive the truck because it wasn't safe. *tr

1999 ford ranger with 130,000 miles. leaf springs rusted out (both sides) and mounting brackets also rusted. went to 3 autobody shops and nobody would touch it. bumper just rusted out on both sides and spare tire well is completely rusted. bumper and spare currently being held together with 2, 1900 lb chains. ranger runs fine just body falling apart. very concerned tire, bumper may become dislodged and cause further damage to myself or others. gas tank also rusted but not leaking so far. *tr

First failure was where leaf springs attach to frame (rear shackles) failed due to rust and put hole in truck bed. replaced parts. second failure is when filling tank with fuel; gas has started to run out on the ground at the gas station. just received filler neck today to replace current rusted one. while under vehicle noticed tank strap is hanging loose not attached due to connection point rusted off (similar failure to nhtsa recall campaign #11v385000 fuel tank strap failure). also noticed severe rust like little or no rust inhibitor was applied to frame and components. shield above muffler is almost non-existent, frame cross member is flaking away due to rust. i am not qualified to provide full details of problems or cause but rust is becoming a safety issue with this vehicle. contacted ford and they say vehicle is not part of recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 ford ranger. while parked, the contact noticed that the fuel tank had partially detached from the vehicle and was hanging down below the frame. the vehicle was taken an independent mechanic, who stated that the cross member, which held the mounting system for the fuel tank, was rusted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and suggested the vehicle be taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostics. in addition, the cross member was not available for purchase and the rear frame would have had to have been replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000. updated 09/21/11*lj the cross member support at attaching fuel tank strap failed due to rust, allowing the fuel tank to hang low. the fuel tank is currently being held in place by a rope. the fuel filler is now separated from the body. updated 09/27/11

In july 2008 engine light came on with code po442. put new gas cap on and light was off until sept 2008 when it came on again with the same code. i cleared the code and the light came on again oct 2008 with code po455. i crawled under the truck and discovered the (fuel filler) tube is rusted out. fuel leaks on ground when filling tank and the automatic nozzle shuts off. i believe this is a safety hazard. john *tr

When filling the gas tank, fuel spilled out onto ground. at the time, i was not aware of this site to post complaint. *nm

On 6/7/20 04 consumer filled vehicle up with fuel, and went to work. when she got off work and went to her vehicle she witnessed a puddle of fuel on the ground. consumer immediately took vehicle to the dealer and had it checked out. she was told that who ever repaired the vehicle before botched the repairs, and may have cut a line. *ak

When the vehicle was refueled, fuel spilled out onto the ground. *jb rusted fuel neck assembly and fuel pump replaced. *tt

The symptom was that the engine lost power and stalled while driving at highway speeds. the fuel filter was replaced, but the symptoms continued. the truck was brought to the dealer, and the dealer claims that the fuel pump was defective, and replaced it. after the new fuel pump, the symtom occured again within 1 day. the dealer had the car for several more days, and claims that nothing else was found, and no other changes or modifications were made. after the second trip to the dealer, the problem has not re-occured.

While driving vehicle just quit cold, and would not start again. ranger was towed to dealership. problem was related to fuel pump which was replaced at owner's expense. please provide any furhter information.*ak

Engine check light(po455 code) came on 5 times since new, problem in fuel system and no vacumn being able to be detected by the onboard computer system in fuel system (leaking vapors?), problem not corrected to date, attempting to track down problem (fuel tank changed, canister purge valve changed, problem persists). *ak
