Problems with 2012 Ford Fusion ENGINE

On average, the 2012 Ford Fusion starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 62 824 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2012 Ford Fusion

While driving, the car began to shake and jerk like the engine wanted to die. then i lost engine power. the car still had power and was on, but there was no throttle when i pushed the gas. the engine light and a little wrench came on. i put it in park, turned it off, restarted it, and it still had no engine throttle to it. but the car had a small amount of power, like i was coasting along, so that i could get through the stop light and make it to the side of the road. every time i tried the gas pedal though, there was no response; it went to the floor. i was at the light by my neighborhood, right by the train tracks. thank god i had enough power to get through that! *tr

The first time i experienced the problem, i was making a left hand turn and it felt like the car was running on a couple of cylinders, very low power. i stopped as soon as i could and turned off the engine, restarted it and everything seem to be ok. everything was fine for about a month, but while on a trip, i experience a sudden loss of power and unresponsive throttle. i took the car to the dealer and explained what had happened and that it sounded like the same problem my sister-in-law had experienced with her 2010 fusion and that after a number of trip and problem repeated problems they replaced the throttle body which resolved the problem. in my case the dealer, even though i explained what i had experienced and that i was aware of a service bulletin from ford for this exact problem, said my problem was a bad battery, which they replaced and returned the car to me. a couple of days later i experienced the same problem a couple of times and immediately took the car back to the dealer and this time they replaced the throttle body. i have since driven the car about 1500 miles in the last two months without a problem. my son is now going through the same problem with a 2011 escape hybrid. his dealer did not replace the throttle body when he took it with the same problem a couple of weeks ago, instead they charged him a few hundred dollars to "remove carbon buildup" or something. today the escape experience the same problem while driving on an interstate. i took the car back to his dealer this afternoon and told them of my experience, the service rep said they would look into it. we'll see. i am a long time loyal ford owner but feel they are waiting for someone to be killed before they fix this problem. *tr

While driving, the gas pedal became unresponsive and the orange wrench symbol came on. i pulled over and shut the car off. i attempted to restart the car. the car restarted and i was able to continue driving as normal. this problem has occurred approx 4 times. each time with the same presentation and each time i was able to restart the car. *tr

I was driving on interstate 70 at approximately 65 mph when i suddenly lost all engine power. i was almost hit by a semi traveling behind me because my vehicle had absolutely zero acceleration. the "wrench" light on my car came on at the same time this happened. the semi behind me swerved to miss me and i was able to get my car off to the side of the road. lights, climate control (a/c), radio, etc. worked fine. engine still ran but would not move forward. i turned the car off to call for assistance. upon seeing if the car would re-start, it did and no "wrench" light appeared. i was able to then get the car to my local ford dealership, but being a holiday they were closed. i could have been killed when this happened on the interstate with the semi behind me!! sounds like some kind of fuel injector or throttle problem. my vehicle is not even 3 years old and i bought it brand new in dec. 2011. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving at various speeds, the air conditioner failed to function. in addition, the contact stated that the air vents began to blow hot air. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer multiple times where the vehicle was unable to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 40,000.

Engine light appeared on dash. followed instructional manual directions and engine light display stayed intermittent. as of july 24th engine light display remains on and every time i stop to put any amount of fuel in it, it struggles to start and takes at least 3 attempts before it will start. however, if i leave it running when adding fuel i have no problem, which is not recommended. had auto zone run diagnostics check and they gave me the code but the ford dealership (kelly ford, melbourne fl) would not even attempt to look up the code as they said i have to come in and pay $100.00 diagnostic fee and $160.00 hourly to have fixed. i am more worried about down the road issues as seen on this web site. bought the car used in december of 2012 with only 11,000 miles on it. *tr

I was driving down the highway when suddenly my vehicle lost power. i attempted to press the accelerator but the car just jerked violently. i was forced to stop in the middle of the highway because i was unable to accelerate to the side of the highway. i was almost rear-ended 3 times do to the speed of traffic and my car suddenly losing power. when the vehicle lost power, a "wrench" symbol appeared on the dash. i placed the vehicle in park and sat for a few seconds and attempted to start the vehicle. once started i pulled over to the side of the highway. the car was running fine so i decided to drive on the highway again. after about 1/2 a mile, the car stopped suddenly again, this time i was able to coast onto the median because i was driving in the slow lane. this continued for several miles until i finally pulled over and called a tow truck. *tr

Felt like a surge then engine stalled. had to pull over turn the car off then restart. *tr

While driving on a major highway at a set rate of speed the car acted as if it was trying to shift gears and bucked, rpm's went up and then back to normal. it went to the dealer and throttle body was replaced, a week or so afterwards the car started to do the same thing, but this time also in reverse. i took it back to the dealer where they stated that nothing was wrong but they only put 4 miles of a test drive on the car. last week the fusion left me on a major highway just shutting down with no warning and i happened to have my 2 year old. i left it sit about 30 minutes and turned over the ignition and it started like normal. i was just thankful to get home without and accident. it's not safe... the car looks great but its like you take your life into your own hands driving it. *tr

Driving car dies out and wrench light comes on. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that she received a letter notifying her of a customer satisfaction program related to nhtsa action number: pe13003 (engine) . the contact mentioned that she was very concerned for her safety and that there should have been a recall issued for the defect. the dealer was contacted, who refused to assist her unless the vehicle was exhibiting the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the contact had not experienced a failure. the current mileage was 18,300.

Vehicle lurched then lost power and check engine light came on. vehicle would not accelerate after losing power. since the repairs, the vehicle will occasionally lurch when the car is in gear and the brakes are applied. *tr

At first the rpm's would increase ( around 500 rpm's) when the car upshifted when it was cold. as the motor and transmission warmed up the increase in rpm's upon upshift lessened. it appeared to me that the transmission was "slipping" as it went through the gears...you could hear the engine speed up and watch the tach to confirm what i was hearing from the engine. i took car to dealer and they checked it out. they said everything was functioning normally however the car still does it. note that the car was under the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty at the time and the service advisor said that the car has a 60k powertrain warranty anyway. i did not like his statement. the problem seems to be getting worse as it sometimes revs between shifts when it is warmed up. ford should step up and review my problem further. i plan to take the car to another ford dealer to see what they say. please advise.

I have had several issues leading up to this and the dealer would say nothing is wrong. car jumps forward when idling, car looses power when accelerating on highway. lastly was complete loss of power and nearly hit by bus with kids in car. they replaced throttle body, a/c motor etc....two weeks gone bye and it is starting again. i need to give this car to my daughter to drive but it is not safe. *tr

On 10/5/2013, i had to call roadside rescue to jump start car. i took vehicle to advance auto on 10/6/2013 to test battery. the printout results found, indicator light was yellow, cold cranking amps 500 on battery, temperature was to high at 124degrees. on 10/7/2013, call roadside rescue to jumpstart vehicle. i let the vehicle idle for a bit, hoping to recharge the battery back to full function. on 10/8/2013 called roadside rescue to jumpstart vehicle for the 3rd time and then drove to ford dealership. with great hesitation, ford replaced the battery. i had to tell the technician to look at the battery's yellow light. *tr

Was driving on interstate in heavy traffic. car immediately-without warning- lost power to accelerate. went to a limp driving mode. warning light (wrench) came on. was very dangerous situation. had to maneuver to side of road. almost was hit from behind. car shook and stuttered. turned off ignition and waited a couple minutes. started car, all warning lights cleared. was able to make it home without any other in incident. few days later same malfunction happened again. car lost acceleration and had to limp to safe place in heavy traffic. turned off car and restarted. took car to ford dealership and was told car is out of warranty and diagnosis was throttle body. a common problem but not a recall. wow. *tr

September 24, 2013-i was driving home and the car began to shut down. the wrench came up and it lose all power. i was able to coast into the median as it was 5;00 traffic. i turned completely off and restarted again. december 5, 2013.. the same thing happened as i was on a side street. i turned off and restarted. 2/24/2014 i was going to work and it cut off on very busy 6 lane highway. it was very scary as no one was behind me. i turned off and then restarted the car. i was so relieved that no one was on this busy road which is always traffic going very fast. i have a service all into ford for friday 2/28/2014. *tr

Driving at highway speed, engine stalls while attempting to merge. orange wrench light appears near fuel gauge. rough idling below 1000 rpm. turn car off and wait one minute. restart car and drive without incident. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was merged off the roadway where the engine was restarted. the vehicle was not taken for repairs or diagnosis. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 44,000.

My son got into the car, going to the store, he said something wrong with the car. i said what, he said when i cranked it up, sound like i heard it clicking. he check the oil, it was a half of a half quart low. he left in 2 seconds he called back, said something is wrong, so his daddy went where he was, it was still running, but lost speed, it would only go 2 or 3 miles per hour. after getting it back home, it sat a little while and it was good to go. labor day i was on interstate 85 it done the same thing to me, but i had to call a wrecker i was to far away from home. now everyone want me to pay for the testing of the car to determan what the problem is. ford need`s to do something about this too many complaints i have read them. !!!! don`t wait until death occurs!!!!. *jb

Pulled out of driveway got approximately 1/4 of mile from home and all of the sudden no gas, no power and looking at the dashboard the only indicator that was lit was the wrench. i drifted to the side of the road waited a few minutes to try and start the car, luckily it did and drove it back home. called the ford dealership to explain what happened, and they said more than likely it is the throttle body. they suggested to have the car towed because it could happen again without warning. as of this morning, it has been confirmed that it is the throttle body and it will only cost me a $100.00 deductable because (lucky me) i am paying for extended warrantly... can't imagine how much if i didn't!!! i asked if this is a common problem with this car and the service person said that this is not the first time she has seen this happen. i am deeply concerned because this situation could have been catastrophic. i drive almost 90 miles a day, five days a week roundtrip on a major beltway and i feel this problem is bigger than ford wants to admit. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated as the vehicle independently decelerated to 1 mph. the vehicle failed to respond to acceleration attempts. the vehicle was shut off and once restarted, it operated normally for a few miles until the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not been repaired. the failure and current mileage was 4,350.

Last wednesday, 7/24/13, i was on the interstate coming home from work in the far left hand lane when my engine shut off and put me in a really bad situation. i had to cross multiple lanes of traffic, while not being able to accelerate, to get to get back to the shoulder. the car seemed to being working fine, but when i hit the gas there was no response. the lights, gauges, and radio still worked and a wrench light came on. i was nearly rear ended twice and barely made it to the shoulder. today, 7/30/13, on my way to work the same thing happened. thankfully this time i was not on the interstate, but rather on a busy city street, and was able to quickly and safely get out of the way. *tr

On my way to work in the morning on a back country road, i went around a 90 degree turn, braking before going into the turn. on the way out of the turn, the engine stalled as i was trying to accelerate. i came to a stop, put the vehicle in park, and then it restarted with not problem, but shocked me a bit. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving 60 mph, an abnormal sound was heard from the engine and the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was unable to start. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the flywheel fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 63,000. updated 05/18/16*lj *tr

Electronic throttle body went out on my 2012 ford fusion. *tr

On 10/9/2013 i was stopped at a light and then when i proceeded to go on a green light, my car stalled without any warning or lights on my dash while in traffic. there was a car behind me that almost rear ended me. went to restart the vehicle and it did not start right away. i had to put the car in park with hazards on, in the middle of traffic, and tried to start the car two more times before the car started again. the car has been giving me issues with hesitation and vibration for the past 4 months. i have taken it to ford and they have checked my car 2 times and never was able to solve the problem. before i took it to ford the car has stalled on 6/19/2013 prior to taking the car to the local ford shop. they said it was the programming and they installed the update for the computer, but it never solved the problem. the last time it stalled on me, my husband, who is an acura technician, pulled the p2111 code out using a pocket code reader out of freeze frame data. there was no codes stored in pcm 6 hrs after the incident. 2 days later checked for freeze frame data again and there was no freeze frame data. *tr

I noticed a "jumpy ride' during trip to albuquerque and back....first road trip since buying car in april,'13. it was sort of a shifting of a gear when there should have been nothing like that at that speed. started noticing around town at 35 the same jumpy feeling...just seemed like too much shifting. the ride is very "rough" ...never had a car like this...loved my '09 fusion, but this one stinks. afraid it's wearing out the tranny and could be dangerous. 3 dealers have just blown me off along with the corporate person i talked to...a "[xxx]" for my region for ford. i am worried and can get nothing done! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Driving on freeway in heavy traffic car suddenly lost power and slowed to 30-40 mph. had to cut across 2 lanes of traffic to the shoulder. limped to exit where car driven at slow speed. dealer could not find problem. *tr

While driving at approximately 50 mph vehicle suddenly lost all power. engine stopped running and all lights turned off. this is the second instance of this happening. after coasting to a stop was able to put the car in park and restart engine. *tr

Starting out, throttle had no response on take off, now taking a right hand turn throttle has no response then jumps forward, very difficult pulling out onto a highway. i've taken it to two different ford dealers and they refuse to do anything till the check engine lite comes on, meanwhile i'm driving a dangerous car... *tr

Pulled up to a stop light that was red. while idling waiting for green light, engine stalled. placed car in park, restarted engine, and automobile drove as normal. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that while attempting a left turn at a traffic stop, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 6,000 and the current mileage was 8,300. *tr

Driving along at around 40 miles per hour, then notice the loss of power, a bright yellow light appeared on the dash - stop safely hazard warning (rtt) - which according to the owners handbook indicates hybrid component fault/failure that will cause the vehicle to shutdown (which it had already down, i had a hard time turning the steering wheel). failed to re-start the first time or enter into a limited operating mode, seems like ray skillman ford, greenwood, indiana could not find any problems. this $31,000 vehicle has only 1,400 miles on the clock and per standard operating procedure denies any problems with the vehicle. *tr

Was at a stop sign when i accerlerated the engine stoped. i veered to the right and the car restarted. i took it to the local ford dealership. they said they could find nothing wrong the car. it has happened a total of three times with the same result, they say nothing wrong with the car. i called ford they initated a buy back but the car did not pass california lemon law muster so my case was closed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the service warning light. the contact shifted into neutral and coasted to the shoulder. the vehicle was restarted and functioned properly. the vehicle was later taken to the dealer for inspection where they advised that they could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and attempted to assist the dealer in diagnosing the failure but to no avail. the failure mileage was 3,000.

While driving my new ford fusion, only 5 months since purchase, the vehicle lost power and stalled. when i took it to the dealer they could find nothing wrong and said what's the issue it started didn't it? the same thing happened again in may and july of 2014. it is a known issue with ford and a customer satisfaction was issued to replace the throttle body, but the dealership won't do so because no code shows up when i've taken the car in after each episode. this is a safely issue and a known issue. why nhtsa allowed them to get away with not doing a recall is beyond me. it is unsafe driving a vehicle that suddenly loses power. it should not matter that a code doesn't show up. what happened before computers? it's a known issue and is happening so it should get replaced. thankfully i wasn't driving over 35 when this occurred, but what about the next time if i'm on a highway going 60? what will it take - people to get seriously injured to get a true recall? *tr

We were driving on the highway at approximately 40mph when the car lost power and began to shake. we were fortunate to be able to pull off on the shoulder out of traffic and turn off the motor. after waiting approximately 15 minutes, we were able to restart the car and drive safely to a reliable automotive shop we have used for over 20 years. finally after a week of testing, they were able to replicate the problem we had experienced.they replaced the alternator,at our considerable expense, and we brought the car home more than a week later. we drove the car without incident until tuesday,october16th when the same problem happened again. this time at about 30mph. again, after waiting 10-15 minutes, the car started again and was driven safely to the automotive repair shop where it remains 5days later. this is a great inconvenience since we live in an area where a car is a necessity but it is also a serious safety hazard since this problem could easily happen when accelerating into traffic or on a busy multilane, high speed highway. from reading this site, we have become aware that there are many complaints of this nature for this make and model year and we question why there has been no recall or,at very least, a consumer alert. *tr

While driving the wrench light came on and lost power. i couldn't accelerate and pulled over. i almost got rear-ended. the car started shaking. i started the car back up and the wrench light came off. drove again and the same problem happened within a mile. *js

Started making noise the first year we had it and kept getting worse as time went on!!!!!

Since sept. 1, 2011 when i took ownership of the car i have had the following happen about once a month. the last time was on july 26, 2012 at 3171 miles. when coming to a stop for a light or slowing traffic and applying the brakes the engine starts to race and the car feels like it wants to surge forward. with continued pressure on the brakes, after a few seconds the engine racing and surging stops and the car stops. i think it may be a problem with a computer. *tr updated ivoq 09/26/12
