Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid

A tire got low and then our power steering fluid went out. the car was parked. i noticed the tire was going flat so i went to start it, but the steering was so stiff that i couldn't even turn out of the parking spot.

My 2010 ford fusion hybrid suddenly lost power steering on 08/10/2017. the 'service power steering now' warning light came on. my son was fortunately in a parking lot and not a highway when this occurred as he lost all ability to turn the vehicle. i had the car towed to a local ford dealership. i read up about recalls but the dealership said this was only for 2011 and 2012 ford fusions. the car has been operated on roads and highways throughout and never taken offroad. the dealership says i have to replace the the steering gear and rack assembly at a cost of $2000. this is a faulty part and the car cannot be driven without a replacement. i know there is an open nhtsa investigation that hopefully will be concluded soon. i have no choice but to pay for the repair and hope for reimbursement from ford for this faulty part later.

When i started the engine i got a power steering assist fault warning on my dash and had no power steering. had it towed to my mechanic, he told wiring had been chewed by a rodent. he repaired the wiring but it still wouldn't work. had it towed to dealer and steering unit was replaced about $2000. three weeks later same warning when i went to start it. towed to dealer again, told faulty part, would be replaced under warranty, no charge. went down to look at car and asked about pro-actively using rodent tape before installing new part as a precaution to prevent any future problems. was shown that there wasn't any visible damage. called me the next day to tell me there was rodent damage to wiring harness that they hadn't seen, that they had cut open the wiring cover and found the wires chewed. my question as to how they knew to cut open the shroud to find the chewed wires in the shroud was answered that there was a "pin-hole" "tooth-hole" in the shroud, but 3 of the 4 wires were separated. . they could try to fix wiring for about $400.00. spoke to service manager and he agreed to repair it and absorb the $400, as it was about 3 hours labor and would only "cost" the dealer about $60.00. next day he called to say they repaired the wiring but still didn't work, so they would have to replace the part and it would cost me another $1,997.80. this was friday and i said i'd call him on monday. i think it is absurd that a consumer is forced into a $2000 repair for a wire, and believe there is a faulty design which would render a $2000 part useless when a wire is cut.

While driving this vehicle, it became very difficult to steer the car. we were told the power steer needs to be fixed. there was no warning sign, it just happened all of a sudden. it could have caused a wreck because my 19 year old was driving at the time. it is especially difficult to steer while pressing the brakes. very unsafe.

Car told me to pull over safely. everything locked up. the steering wheel got real tight and would not turn. i took it to a ford dealership to have fixed and they said the power steering box went out. the car was in motion. i was on my way to work.

As i was driving to the store the power steering service light came on and the service advance trac and it become hard to steer.. so now its parked because dealership said it would cost $1500 to fix which i don't have .. after research most models just 2011 and up have this recall. i think 2010 should also be a recall their are several complaints about it

On two or three occasions after starting the car and shifting into drive, a warning light came on stating "power steering assist failure" and i could tell the car had no power steering. each time i would shut the engine off, restart the vehicle, and the problem was rectified. on june 1, 2017, the same problem occurred but this time the power steering never returned. i called a ford dealer and explained the problem and a service technician gave me a suggestion to disconnect and then connect the battery. this did not help. i brought the car into the dealership for repair and they found the whole steering assembly needed to be replaced costing in the neighborhood of $1750. after reading numerous reports of the same problem on the internet i decided to file a complaint to ford and also to any consumer protection agencies.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion hybrid. while backing out of a driveway without warning, the power steering failed. the contact stated that the vehicle became difficult to operate. the contact stated that the vehicle was cycled off and then on; however, the power steering still failed to operate as intended. the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to the local dealer to be diagnosed. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

Intermittently the power steering will go out and make it very difficult to steer the vehicle. it happens at low and high speeds, most often when the wheel has been rotated to turn the vehicle.

While driving i received the following warning indicators on the dashboard "service power steering now" and "service advance trac" luckily i was driving on local roads and not at highway speeds. i cannot imagine the panic and danger posed to myself and others if i lost power steering on the highway. this is definitely a very serious hazard and should be recalled before someone looses their life.

In coincidence with a flat front tire being fixed, the dash display began toggling between alerts 'service power steering now' and 'service advancetrac.' the power steering is not working, and the 'ready to drive' indicator on this hybrid is not on. a few minutes of internet searching turned up many similar reports, including ford having recalled 2011-13 vehicles for the same issue, but not 2010 models with same system. (?) many of the reported incidents happened at driving speed, so maybe they're waiting for more crashes/injuries/fatalities...pretty sad if so.

When i started the car the steering wheel would not move. the dashboard indicated that the power steering assist had failed. turned the car off and back on and it was normal. however on arriving home shocked to see the legions of people with 2010 fusions complaining of this same exact problem with regularity since the new year. don't feel like putting my family's as well as other strangers lives in danger by driving as many people claimed that the steering stopped while driving at high speeds. ford should recall this model just as they have the 2011-2015 fusions. i believe the parts are the same. thank you eric

While driving to work, an error message was displayed indicating that the power steering needed to be serviced "now". after i parked the car, and returned to it several hours later, after starting it, the same error displayed and i noted that the vehicle had no power steering at all. thankfully i was not driving at the time, on the interstate which is my normal route. i was able to get the car to a certified mechanic who advised that the issue was related to the epas motor mounted on the rack. i contacted ford to inquire about a recall for this particular year model as i noted that there was a recall for the same make/model for 2011 and 2012 year models. the part number for replacement was identical to the 2011 and 2012 models that are under recall. the error message and sudden loss of power steering issue was identical as described. it's apparent to me that this is related to the same defect yet ford refused to acknowledge it as such. this is a serious safety issue that ford needs to address and include the 2010 model year in the same recall.

While driving approximately 35 mph on a city street the advance trac warning light came on followed by messages to "service advancetrac" and "service power steering now". i was able to drive home safely without any real difficulty, but when i attempted to move the car the next morning the power steering was inoperable and i had to have the car towed to the dealership because i felt it would be unsafe to drive due to steering unresponsiveness. dreading the diagnosis and cost to repair.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion hybrid. while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

The power steering assist failure has made the car nearly impossible to drive.

Service power steering light came on just before i made it over to a friends house. next time i started the car the power steering was completely gone. thankfully i was able to make it to a friends house before went it out because i had my wife and kids in the car.

Power steering stopped working while making a turn on the highway. was able to avoid accident with the car beside me but was very difficult to steer the car in the direction needed. car code came up to "service power steering immediately". very dangerous situation if not prepared when this happens!

For the 4th time since march 2015, service power steering now and service advance trac system. all four times this happened will driving typically 30mph on city streets. once happened on the highway. all four times the power steering would remain engaged until car was powered off at which point the vehicle did not have power steering. the 2nd and 4th times both occurred within weeks of the repair by a dealer. an additional time the same warnings occurred with the loaner/rental vehicle provided while my own vehicle was being repaired for the problem. last repair (10 days ago) cost $1600. *tr

I was pulling into a parking lot at low speed and the power steering failed and steering manually was almost impossible. i turned the car off and restarted it and the power steering worked. the next day i took the car to a repair shop and they could find no problem with the steering. they contacted ford and were advised that the vehicle had no recalls relative to the steering failure. i contacted the ford service department and was told that fusion hybrids were being recalled for power steering failure, but my vehicle was not on the recall list. how can that be?

The power steering went out on my fusion while in motion . this should be a recall. now the stop safely now light came on while in motion and this is apparently the mec.

The power steering randomly gave out while i was driving. at first a light came on the dash board that said service power steering now. then another light saying service advance track. after i parked my car turned it off and went to turn it back on i was no longer able to easily turn my steering wheel. *tr

Power steering is not working. have taken to mechanic twice who cannot find anything wrong other than to reset computer. steering works for a few days then fails again. typically get warning light, then after vehicle is turned off, power steering no longer works. have researched this issue, seems to be common among ford fusions since 2010.

As we were driving about 35 miles an hour, the power steering repair light and the advancetrac repair light both suddenly came on. we were almost to our destination. after we stopped at our destination, the power steering was completely shut off in the vehicle. we had to have the vehicle towed and the repair charges (from the ford dealer) are estimated to be $2391. for a car that's barely 6 years old and in otherwise great condition (~80,000 miles) to have a sudden failure that would lead to extremely expensive repairs is ridiculous. i worry, based on what i've read from other users online, that if we hadn't been about 1 minute from our destination that the power steering would have just shut off while we were driving, which would have been very dangerous on such a curvy road. *tr

Power steering went out when i was leaving at store almost causing a wreck.

Tuesday, october 25th, i was driving my 2010 ford fusion approximately 20 mph when the power steering and advancetrac lights came on my dash. i stopped, turned the car off and back on. the lights stayed on and the power steering wasn't working. i had the car towed by aaa to a aaa approved mechanic. the informed me that there is a second nhtsa investigation on the 2010 fusion for this problem, and a recall on the 2011-2012 fusions that have the same part and problem. the aaa mechanic wouldn't touch the car! i called the ford customer service number, but without a recall, they were not willing to do anything for me. i took it to the local ford dealership where they reset the codes, charged me $94.99 for diagnostic service, and everything works fine now. i am hoping that this gets me by until the much needed safety recall is issued so i can have the steering fixed the right way. my wife drives this car and we have many children that ride in it. there is not way that she could steer the car if the power steering goes out again. it makes it very hard to turn the steering wheel and happens without warning, and impossible to make sharp turns. this problem needs to be resolved with a safety recall asap. *tr

Our 18 year old daughter was driving the car when the power steering ceased to function. she was able to stop and call us for help. we took it to a dealer and they said the whole power steering needed to be replaced. the car had just under 100,000 miles on it. *tr

My power steering went out while my wife was driving the car with my kids in it. she totally lost all power steering making a turn, i took to the dealer and they said they had to replace the rack. about 3 months later it happened again while she was getting ready to turning in our driveway. i took back to the dealer they said it was fine just needed reprogrammed. it worked for about 6 months and now it is doing the same thing. i cant afford to take it to the dealer again so it is sitting in my driveway. *tr

On 10/13/16 while driving the steering wheel locked, power steering assist fault appeared on the dash and i ran into a telephone pole. my passenger and myself were injured and the car is totaled. *tr

Power steering failed

On multiple occasions during past 3 years, i experienced a sudden loss of power steering, which could be reinstated by pulling over, shutting off engine and restarting car. a few weeks ago, it could not be reinstated and i have had a permanently loss of steering. the isolated incidents occurred while driving, sometimes in a parking lot where i came close to hitting cars because i could barely muster the physical strength necessary to steer in tight spots, other times while driving in city streets. they appeared to occur randomly about once over few months until it finally happened permanently. so far, i have not had any accidents or injuries, although i cannot let my wife drive the car because she lacks the physical strength to overcome the loss of power steering. the car is now with the dealership where i bought it and they are charging me approximately $1,900 to replace the entire steering assembly. the specific information given below is for the last, permanent occurrence. *tr

While making a left turn i seemed to loose control of the steering and hit the opposite curb so hard that a large chunk was torn in both passenger side tires. i was driving on a suburban street and had a left turn traffic signal. i did not know how it happened and called aaa to be towed to a station and had to purchase two new tires.

While on travel, i went to start my car and got a warning message that the power steering needed to be serviced. there was no earlier indication (noise, periodic failure, etc.) that power steering was on the way out. thankfully i was not driving at the time. online research revealed a recall for nearly all later models 2011-2015, but not mine for the exact same issue.

My daughter was driving the vehicle in los angeles on a one-way street in the hills and heard a loud noise right before the steering wheel locked on her. the 'service power steering now" red light came on but the steering wheel would not move. the car was towed into galpin ford. galpin quoted $2200.00 to repair and suggested that i call ford customer service. a couple of calls into ford yielded two apologies and said that the car is not part of the major recall and therefore not under warranty. this year and model has the worst number of complaints for steering wheel

Occasional stiff steering feel when correcting for straight tracking

While driving on a busy street (with 2 small children) we lost all power steering, on a busy street causing unsafe driving conditions. the service advancetrac (avs) and service power steering errors came on as this happened.

I went to drive my vehicle and it showed 2 alarms on the dash. a traction control warning and a power steering needs service. i drove the car 5 miles to church. upon coming out of church and getting back in the vehicle, the same 2 alarms were on the dash, but the power steering changed to service now. the power steering in the car was gone. i struggled to get the car out of a parking spot and back to my home. it is now sitting in the yard. i am very concerned that if this would have occurred while driving, that i could have experienced an accident.

Steering gear malfunctioned. when taken to the service department, the service manager said there were 2648 of these parts on back order. it has been two months since this car has been sitting at the service department with no action being taken. still waiting on the part from ford. the part malfunctioned while driving on a city street, going straight. warning alerts appeared on the dashboard with no initial indication of anything going wrong with the part. drove the vehicle home 30 miles, no change in original condition of steering. when taking the car out the next day, that was the first indication that there was no power steering.

While my daughter was driving my car the power steering failed unexpectedly and she was lucky she was near our home. i brought the car to the dealership and they said the part will cost $1500 and it is on backorder for over two weeks! i bought this car used and found out the same part was replaced at 65,000 miles. i was told by the dealership that it's common to have to replace that part every 65,000 miles! i have had many cars and i have never once had to replace a steering gear, never mind twice. i think ford has faulty parts and should take accountability for it!! right now i am out of a car for over two weeks and the dealership they can not give me a loaner even though it's ford who doesn't have the part. i will never buy a ford again after this. the cars are unsafe amd no one is doing a thing about it! Driving home about 55mph when steering got stiff and "power steering failure" followed by "advancetrac failure", then "service advancetrac system" warning messages and chimes appeared. managed to get home without the power-assist but upon stopping on driveway and restarting car, steering was gone altogether and i could not turn the wheel. impossible to drive. spoke to ford cust. serv. next morning who said there were no issues reported on this car and no safety recalls (although he admitted there were safety recalls on all subsequent model years of this car for steering issues) and he suggested taking it to the dealer. i told him it was impossible to drive so he arranged (and covered the cost of) a towtruck to take it to the nearest dealer. they tested the car and found only a blown power steering system fuse. after replacing fuse and testing the car they said it was now fixed. they could not identify the problem that caused the fuse to blow. i explained that i was now scared to drive the car in case it happened again and what if.... it happened at higher speed and the car won't steer? the dealer service manager is contacting ford to see what she can do. total cost to fix the fuse and diagnostic test was $111.

When starting the car i got an error message "service power steering now" and service advancetrac. now i cannot turn the wheel on the car and i cannot drive it. i've seen other people have the same issue. i tired to restart the car and had the same issue. also unplugged the battery and tired again an it still had those errors.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford fusion hybrid. while driving approximately 60 mph, the warning message for service power steering and service auto trac illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer ran a diagnostic and the system reset itself. the mechanic diagnosed that the electric power assist system needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

I was rounding a corner at approximately 10 mph, pulling out from the street where i live, and two trouble codes popped up: (1) "brake! check brake system"; and (2) "service advancetrac". the car immediately became incredibly difficult to steer and the brakes provided little (if any) stopping power (i am unsure if it was jamming on the brakes that provided extremely minimal stopping power or just the inertia of the car slowing over approximately 30-50 feet). the dealership ultimately provided excellent service replacing the "asb module", but i feel that it is unsafe for a car's brakes and power steering to fail suddenly, even at low speeds, and unexpected that a 4 year old car with less than 40,000 miles would have such a failure. i live near a park. if someone had decided to suddenly cross the street with a stroller, a kid had run into the street after a ball, or someone else had darted in front of the car, i would have been unable to make the necessary adjustments to avoid an auto on person crash. *tr

Complete loss of power steering. no accident/injury to report. power steering did not come back when vehicle was turned off and back on. taken to mahwah, nj, ford dealer who announce that gear box needs to be replaced, and they have never seen this type of failure before.

Started up and left the golf course last evening and went about a quarter mile and suddenly the "service power steering" warning came on along with the usual chimes you hear. lost the power steering and the vehicle was very difficult to drive the 12 or so miles to my home. also the advance track warning is on.

While driving vehicle power steering stopped working making it nearly impossible to control. as a result crashed into another vehicle. there was no warning prior to the failure, a service power steering now warning light and a service advance trac light illuminated as the failure occurred. this steering configuration is extremely dangerous as it is nearly impossible to control and very different from a vehicle that does not have power steering.

I previously reported the steering failure on my ford, and i was gratified to see ford recalling the 2011 and later models of this car for this steering problem. when i had my steering harness replaced on my 2010, however, my mechanic said it was the same part as the 2011. if so, why did you not recall the 2010s as well? it was the first model year of the car and suffers from the same problem.

The assisted power steering failed without warning on my 2010 ford fusion hybrid. i was turning out of a gas station onto a street when it failed and i was able to pull to the side safely. when i did an internet search i found that this is a common problem and there is a class action suit filed against ford because of it. if that is true, why hasn't the nhtsa intervened? this is a very dangerous situation. *tr

While driving along at 35 mph the "service power steering" and "service advancetrac system" warning lights came on. lost power steering. stopped to see what owner's manual had to say. it said it was okay to drive, but to take it to the nearest dealer. took it to a ford dealer in frankfort, ky. they said it was a fuse that had popped up out of its slot in the fuse box. since the power steering is an electrical assist motor the circuit to the motor was broken when the fuse popped up out of its slot. the fuse was not blown, just lost contact in the circuit. car was fine until 10,000 miles later. same problem, loss of power steering. ford dealer in daytona beach, fl says they found an over temp code and reset code. they could find nothing else wrong with the car that would cause loss of power steering. drove another 1,000 miles and loss of power steering again in virginia. took car to nearest ford dealer in prince george, va. they replaced front control arms. drove another 600 miles and loss of power steering again. went straight to the first ford dealer in frankfort, ky and they say they need to replace the rack on it, but it is now out of warranty. not sure what to do next or where to take the car. no one really knows what is causing this problem....updated 10/01/15*bf

On 4/9/15 i was driving along 2-lane road and got a message on my dash re power steering problem. at the same time i noticed that power steering had gone out. i was able to pull into a parking lot, turned off vehicle, when i turned power back on, the power seemed to be ok and i continued driving. i took the car immediately to jacky jones dealership. they said they checked it out, couldn't find anything and said it must've been a "glitch." they charged me $45.22. i proceeded to get on i-75 and drove home. on 5/18/15, i was on a main road approaching access to i-75. once again i got a message on the dash and the power steering went out. i pulled off road, turned off ignition and then turned it on again. it appeared to be ok. 5/25/15. took vehicle to lenoir city ford end left it there over weekend. today they told me that rack unit has to be replaced at a cost of approx. $1800. they did tell me that i should not drive car. the power steering went out for them at dealership as well.
