Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was driving 30 mph when the vehicle accelerated abnormally and independently. in addition, the vehicle would sporadically stall when the failure occurred. the contact was a mechanic and inspected the vehicle. he was able to generate failure codes that indicated throttle body failures. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 141,000. updated 8/31/12 *cn the consumer stated with each failure the check engine light came on and when accessed through the obdii connector, p2104 tac forced to idle and p2111 tac system stuck open trouble codes, were presented. updated 09/11/2012 *js
A few years ago our freestyle started lunging when sitting idle, if you didn't keep you foot on the break at a stop light etc, it would lunge into the car infront of you. we spend a lot of money trying to get this fixed, but it never was 100% resolved. the transmission started acting up this past year, it would only move 10 mph while the rpm was very high. if you shut it off, it would reset after awhile. took it in and was told that it would take another transmission to fix, approx 5600 to 7500 dollars. after doing some research, it looks like 100's and 100's of people are having the same identical issues and ford will do nothing about it. the last straw was driving at 60 mph and the transmission just shuts down, almost causing an accident. this car isn't safe and ford knows the issue, because they quit making the cvs transmission right away. should be some compensation because this car is now worth nothing to anyone. *tr
With the a/c on full (very hot day outside), when stopping or starting to reverse, the car lurched forward twice. my foot was on the brake and was not on the accelerator. *tr
I was backing up out of a parking spot very slowly and the car surged backward about a foot, i was able to depress the brake and stop it. the fail safe mode then engaged. i turned the car off and sat for a couple minutes and restarted it and started backing out. the same thing happened again, the surge backward and the failsafe mode engaged. i once again stopped and turned off the engine and sat for about 15 minutes. when i restarted the car the check engine light was on but i was able to back out of the parking space all right, and the failsafe mode did not come back on. it was an extremely hot 100 degrees day, and the a/c was on. this is extremely scary. i could have hit someone. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle.the contact stated that while driving at any speed the vehicle would stall without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the throttle sensor was replaced. after the repair the vehicle failed again. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer here the throttle was replaced a second time but to no avail. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the egr valve was replaced. the failure was still not corrected. the vehicle was currently at the dealer awaiting repair. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 55,000.

Pulling into parking space facing restaurant, with foot on brake pedal, car lunged forward. curbing kept me from hitting people walking into restaurant. a/c compressor replaced a few day prior to this incidence; however, car has been lunging since a/c compressor was replaced. the day the ac compressor was replaced and i drove the car off of the ford dealership lot, my car lunged pulling into parking space at the post office -- i thought the floor mat had gotten caught on the gas pedal and was causing the problem the lunging happens both going forward and backwards. took car back to ford dealership where a/c compressor was installed; gentleman at "quick lube" desk said he had never heard of this problem with the freestyle or at least he had never written up a service report for this problem. have discovered on-line numerous entries regarding this problem with the freestyle. feel ford motor company should take responsibility for correcting this problem. *tr
Vehicle surges without pressing accelerator while idling and driving at low speeds such as taking off from stop signs, parking or backing. it is worse when air conditioner is operating. while parked and idling with a/c on, rpms increase (nearly double) when a/c coompressor clutch engages. the service engine soon light is not on while the condition exists. i have not contacted the ford dealership, however i do plan on it tomorrow to see if they know of a proper repair. *tt
My car started lunging when moving at slow speeds, and i'd have to jam on brakes to keep it from hitting another car, building, etc. happens primarily when a/c is on also. loses power on acceleration, but lunges when applying slight gas in both reverse and forward. scary beyond belief. i have a heart condition, and nearly fainted when it happened last time, at an intersection with wild traffic, and i had to jam the brakes to keep the car from going into traffic. seen enough similar reports online that my next stop will be news media. please help us! *tr
Car lost power at 35-40 mph for just a few seconds. many instances of lunging in forward and reverse. frightening to drive in parking lots.

I own a 2005 ford freestyle which lurches backward when you have the a/c on and you back up. it also started doing the same in foward. ford should act upon this before there is a death. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was reversing when the vehicle abnormally accelerated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis and it was determined that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the failure recurred two years later. the vehicle was returned to the dealer and again, it was advised to the contact that the throttle body would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not further repaired. the failure mileage was 64,223 and the current mileage was 88,000.
1st occurrence was in a parking lot. started car, had foot on brake, removed foot from brake and car surged backward. quickly applied brake. 2nd occurrence, again in a parking lot, a few days later. this time put car into drive and it surged forward 3 - 4 times in a row. had to quickly apply the break each time and when i would release the brake it would surge again. 3rd occurrence in fast food drive through. each time i would advance in line the car would surge and i had to quickly apply the brake. also have noticed slight surging at interstate speeds. have had this problem since the car was at 20,000 miles or less. can observe the speedometer fluctuating while cruise is set or when foot is on accelerator. *tr
When i put car in reverse, drive, or when car is sitting idle there is a sudden abrupt throttle in the transmission gas. the acceleration is so abrupt that it causes the car to move with force without having to press the gas. there were a few incidences where i almost rammed the objects in front and behind me, from the sudden throttles/acceleration. ive noticed that if im sitting behind the wheel at a traffic light and i have my foot on the break and if i move the steering wheel the car will accelerate on its own. please look into this issue. *js [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
Car was parked in rear of apartment complex.when i put it in reverse it lunged back without my foot on the gas, smashing the rear of the car into the apartment building wall. i did have a seat belt on but the impact caused severe neck trauma as my head was turned at the time of impact. i shut the car off. approximately an hour later i started the car, put it in drive, and as i attempted to drive the car home, it would "lose power", the wrench light would come on, and the car would have no transmission power. i had to pull the car over, turn it off and restart it. this happened repeatedly. the local ford dealership incorrectly diagnosed and charged me a repair for cleaning the sensor - and refused to refund me my diagnostic charges even though my car was not fixed. i did my own research to learn it was a throttle body issue. the service manager stated they would apply the credit towards replacing the throttle body....but not all the charges. they were horrible to deal with in customer service after completely failing to fix my car and charging me almost $500. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle shuddered, surged, and the engine stalled without warning. in addition the contact stated that when the brake pedal was depressed, the engine would rev. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was repaired, but the specifics of the repairs were unknown. the failure recurred after the initial repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unavailable.
The car was surging and lurching forward even when the brake was engaged. we had near misses running in to cars in front of us just trying to get it to a safe location as we were stuck in a parking lot and in stop and go traffic. while on the interstate is would just loose almost all power even though the accelerator was floored. *tr
After quickly crossing traffic and entering my driveway (which is on a downward slope) i released the gas on entering my driveway and applied the brake. just before applying the brake the vehicle lurched. it didn't lurch far, but enough for me to rapidly depress the brake pedal in surprise. one item of note--the low fuel indicator was on and my next stop was to get gas. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle lunged forward or in reverse when the vehicle was placed in park gear, or driven at low speeds. the vehicle also accelerated when the contact removed his foot from the brake pedal. the failure occurred without warning, and recurred intermittently. the vehicle hesitated to accelerate to higher speeds. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not inspected since the failure was not present. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the current mileage was 62,000. the failure mileage was 55,000.
I have had multiple incidents. in almost every occurrence that i can remember, i have either been pulling into my garage, backing out of my garage, or pulling into a parking space when it feels like something "catches" and the freestyle moves a few more miles per hour suddenly. it's happened more often when in drive than when the car is in reverse. the issue does make me worry about running into another parked car or into my garage wall, but i try to be ready for it and have my foot on the brake to stop the sudden momentum. *js

I've noticed the car to lunge and idling very high. when i back out of a parking stall for instance, the car lunges out and i have to keep my foot on the brake. when i'm at a full stop; at times you can hear the car idling very high and when you let go of brake the car lunges out. during traffic, you have to make sure you continually keep the brake on, or the car will thrust forward and hit the vehicle ahead. *tr

While driving to work all of a sudden the cluster lights in the instrument panel all went out and the speedometer, odometer, control temp, and gas gage all zeroed out and a wrench and air bag light came on. then after about 10 minutes of driving everything starting working again and the two warning lights went off however, then the check engine light came on. i had a diagnostic done and the errors were all electrical. have to take it in a few days to the ford dealer and be charged a $90.00 fee up front just for them to look at it and diagnose the problem. according to all the complaints it's been a very well known problem that ford should have dealt with in a recall. not just try to sweep it under the rug. i'm sure it's going to cost me an arm and a leg when they get done. i have always owned a ford but now i think i'm going to make a switch to a chrysler (since i do work there now) and i know i will be taken care of not just taken. *tr
This is the 2nd time this happened! again, we were on the highway and suddenly the motor gave out. luckily, we made it without an accident to the shoulder. the wrench symbol and the cel were on. the motor started again but the car didn't take any gas, didn't accelerate. and the engine was running very rough and rumbling. i had my wife and kids in the car and was really so mad. we had to call a tow truck and a taxi to get home. the cel came on so many times in the past months, we checked the code - it was always for the throttle body. we cleaned it and the light was gone. only to come back a couple of weeks later. as i said, we've been dealing with this problem since some months now. but this is the 2nd time the motor actually stalled. and in this really very dangerous situation : on a highway!! ford needs to initiate a recall, i've done some research in the last months, there are so many complaints about this problem. my freestyle also lunges forward/backward if i'm accelerating. i think it's all related and totally irresponsible of ford not do do something. it's a serious safety issue. a miracle no one has been injured until now - or worse!!! *kb

Vehicle unexpectedly and with great speed lurches in both forward and reverse. i notice the issue most often when pulling into or out of a parking spot or just after using the brake. the car suddenly accelerates without warning forcing me to slam on the brakes so that i do not hit other vehicles or unintentionally enter traffic. the issue is very dangerous because there is no forewarning and has appeared to be happening more often and with greater force. *tr

The first incident my fuel gauge is off & producing incorrect data of gas remaining in car & driver window would roll up and down when trying to just roll it up. i took the car back to the dealership they did not fix the issue. another incident i was on the highway and the stalled while driving. third incident i was at a stop light with my 5 year old daughter in the car, all of a sudden the car made a loud revving up noise then shot us forward into oncoming traffic. i was barely able to back up before the cars reached us. another time i was driving with my daughter taking her to daycare then going to work and we were going through a school zone. we stopped at a stop sign and there was a family with 3 children crossing and the car shot us forward again and we almost hit the family. several times when picking up my daughter i would put the car in reverse and my foot was on the brake pedal still all of a sudden the car shot us back into the cars behind us. this car is very unsafe. i fear for the safety of others and my daughters and my life when getting into this car. ford should recall this vehicle and replace it with a new car. people shouldn't be at risk for this. *tr
2005 ford freestyle lunging forward, stalling out, and check engine light wrench icon light coming on. it was dangerous to be on the road because of the sudden stopping, and very pore acceleration. after several tries at reading codes discovered it was a bad throttle body. i noticed all of the complaints that were posted on line about this same vehicle and discovered your investigation opened in 2011. repairs were made by myself at the cost of $608.00. also, i noticed the new replacement part had an engineering change that eliminated the anti freeze heater section. i feel something should be done about this problem by recalling the throttle body system used in this ford vehicle. i also was informed by the service center at the ford dealership, where i purchased the throttle body ,that this part was common to be replaced. thank you for looking into this issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while proceeding after a complete stop, the vehicle abruptly accelerated. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. the transmission was replaced. however, the failure was not corrected. the vehicle continued to abruptly accelerate. the vehicle was taken for a second diagnostic to an independent mechanic whom located a failure code at the throttle body. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
While at idle upon starting car and shifting (automatic) from park to drive or reverse, the vehicle has exhibited significant "lunging" without any applied pressure to gas peddle. additionally, this lunging has been repeated a number of times independent of initial vehicle starts (i.e. when parking the car and backing up). approximate lunging of the vehicle before human response time and brake application with subsequent stoppage of vehicle is subjectively estimated at 24-36 inches (2-3 feet). recommendation: recall; replace and/or repair. reference investigation number: pe11018. *tr

In this incident, before the engine shut off the car would surge with power forcing my car to thrust forward without control, perhaps certain times up to anywhere from a few inches to a couple feet. after this happens for a little while the car turns off and the system reads failsafe engine mode. this incident happened to me 3 times on the way to the dealership, and i just received the estimate of around $850 to fix this unsafe working vehicle due to its electronic throttle body malfunctioning. luckily no people were close to my car any of the times the car was randomly accelerating. *kb
My vehicle has a failed throttle body as evidenced by two codes: t2106 and p061b (reported to me by my mechanic). it lunges or surges when trying to accelerate normally. it goes into "engine fail safe mode" repeatedly and randomly. it has "rough starts" from time to time that have not been found to have another cause. now, the check engine light is on and stays on, and it will not go into engine fail safe mode, which actually scares me. it scares me because, as i understand it, engine fail safe mode is a protective mode for a failed throttle body. when my mechanic ran the diagnostics on the check engine light, he got the two codes listed above, which he said indicate a failed throttle body. he said this could be dangerous. he said that from his research, this is a wide-spread problem, and ford should have issued a recall on this by now. i have contacted ford, and they are refusing to assist with this. my real dilemma is that even if i pay for the replacement, if ford has not reengineered the part, i will be putting in another defective ford part. this is what is happening to many ford owners. they are experiencing multiple failed throttle bodies. i feel trapped in this situation with no good solution other than to pray for safety and hope for ford to do the right thing and reengineer this part, recall it, and replace it. can you please investigate this? thank you, ford driver *tr
