On average, the 2005 Ford Freestyle starts to “feel” problems with the VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL and its various aspects after 85 362 miles.

Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2005 Ford Freestyle

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated after starting the vehicle she shifted it in reverse gear but the vehicle accelerated forward. after a considerable amount of time the vehicle began to function as designed. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing and the contact was informed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the failure and current mileage was 172,000. updated 11/13/13*lj throttle body was cleaned and reprogrammed. updated 11/18/13

While driving on the freeway the wrench light, and check engine light came on. the car lost significant power, almost resulting in accident would only allow me to drive 40mph, pulled over around 11 times and restarted the car. i was an hour away from home. i had the throttle body cleaned a few months ago at the ford dealership, they assured me that this would fix the previous problem because the car was lunging forward (which i have already made a formal complaint). however they also stated that it really should be replaced but they were only instructed to clean it and eventually it would get clogged again. when i spoke to them today they stated that there was nothing they could do and i would have to fix at my own expense. i could understand if it was normal wear and tear on the vehicle. however this is a major safety issue. someone is going to end up hurt by this. i am a family of six and i am really scared for my families safety while in this vehicle. first the lunging backward and forward.... now the car loosing significant power while driving on the freeway... seriously this is not appropriate... please have ford look further into this or eventually they will be sued by someone. as i was pulled over on the side of the road. another gentleman stopped and told me that he as well owns a freestyle and he is having same issues and currently is in the process of a lawsuit with ford. too many safety complaints on the vehicle/transmission for ford not to recall. !!!!!!!!! *tr

Happens both when taking off and going over 40mph veh makes thumping sound from rear end and hesitates until thumping goes away then able to accelerate without problem. *tr

The dash turned off. all of the dash components are not working including the mileage, speedometer, gas, oil, turn signals etc. it is not safe to drive. it fails several times during the day and at night keeping me guessing if i am driving the speed limit or not and if my turn signals are working. the airbag safety light also is not working, flashing on and off keeping me wondering if i have any safety at all. this problem is not just happening with my car but others in my year and make. it is not safe for the driver, passenger, and other cars on the road. this needs to be fixed. as of now, the bug has not fixed itself. the electronics have been off for a full day and i am worried they won't turn back on. please do some further work on this problem. thank you. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while the brake pedal was being depressed, the vehicle lunged forward abnormally. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 43,000. *tr

I was sitting in a drive thru when the engine suddenly revved up and the car lurched forward. the gas pedal was not being pressed at the time, only the brake. i applied more pressure to the brake pedal and the car stopped. the engine continued to rev and then it shut off. when the car was restarted, the check engine light was on. the error code was p061b.

When i was reversing out of a parking space my car lunged backwards and then a few weeks later the same thing happened to me when i pulled out onto a street and went into safe mode. and would only go 40mph. it seems to be happening more frequently when i go into drive or reverse my car will lungebackwards. this vehicle is becoming more and more unsafe to drive. the cost of a new cvt transmission will run me alot of $$$$$. i am aware there is currently a class action lawsuit pending against ford for this matter. i just purchased this vehicle this year if i would have known i would not have bought this car. with four children in the car i am very scared to drive the car . *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the contact also stated that the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000.

We were driving on the freeway (hwy 350) and the car just stalled out, again in traffic on take off the car stalled in the middle of traffic, once getting on i-70 it just stalled,. we took it to dick smith ford here in raytown, missouri , [xxx] the service person said it was covered under extended warranty. so i left the car with them , and about 3:00 pm i got a call, [xxx] said the car was ready, he said they fixed the problem, but it is doing the same thing. this time it stopped with my wife in the heat of traffic, well i called [xxx] at the dealership again and he said it must be something else, well i had a test done, the test indicated it is the same problem the throttle body. i know the problem could not be a tune-up because i just spent $ 900.00 for that at the same ford place, yes over nine hundred dollars. please advise what to do. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

It is about nhtsa campaign id number: pe11018. i started experiencing the exact same condition described in this investigation summary. then i researched on web, and found about this investigation. i was shocked by that the investigation was closed 2 years ago, and they concluded "no recall" , "no safety issue"... it is safety issue!! i have been having the bad dreams these days because of this problem... in my dream, i totally lost control of the car, and the car kept going & going..... please have ford fix this problem. please! *tr

Had a previous recall done to clean throttle body for cold start stall it ran fin for a couple of weeks when one sunday we were on the interstate my wife was driving at the time when suddenly it was like some one shut the engine off, we were in very heavy traffic with traffic moving fast my wife become very scared she had no power steering or brakes cars were locking their brakes blowing horns and passing around us i shifted the car to neutral for we were still rolling about 50 by then and had her try and restart car which it did and we resumed speed to the next pull over, i contacted the dealer and someone in ford quality and was told i would have to pay check out fees and it was not a warranty nor goodwill item. since we reluctantly take the ford we use our older chevy instead, i have used the ford several times since the incident and it acts up every time, i am on disability and cannot afford the cost for check . out fees after reading dozens of blogs there seems to be a problem in the throttle body, and this is a big safety issue, i am a retired ford technician forced to due to cancer, we need help with our car and for you to be aware of the dangerous problem these cars are having, had i not been with my wife the first time this occurred there could have been a serious accident, i have been on line and talked with many other people with the same problem, some not as lucky as us. i think ford needs to first ck the recall they did and then find out why i am having this dilemma, after 24 years. as a ford tech i have never come across something as scary and dangerous as this. a word of feedback would be greatly appreciated thank [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Car has a history of lunging when idling. it has happened several times over the years. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power and made a strange noise. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 101,000.

2005 freestyle sat parked at idle (in parking lot) for approximately 7 minutes. brake pedal was then pressed and gear shift put into "drive". vehicle rpm's immediately went up out of control without foot on accelerator. vehicle quickly lurched forward about 10 feet before brake pedal was depressed far enough to cease the movement. speed estimated at 8mph. rpm's continued to increase and vehicle lurched again and traveled about a foot before brake pedal was further depressed enough to cease movement. for about one-half second after brake pedal was depressed, rpms stayed high and then vehicle shook violently and stalled. dash readout said, "engine failsafe mode". fortunately, no persons were in front of vehicle during incident. one hour later, same day, vehicle would not properly accelerate during passing attempt. unknown if this issue was related. the next morning, vehicle would not start and hasn't started since. vehicle currently in auto repair shop (we've been afraid to drive vehicle and will not drive it until situation is rectified). *tr

Car suddenly slowed to approximately 5 mph and then stopped. accelerator stopped functioning. i waited for ten minutes, turned the engine on and limped home at 5 mph. this breakdown occurred after worked was performed at varsity ford in ann arbor, michigan for this same problem. dealer advised that the worked performed (cleaning the throttle body and reprogramming the powertrain train module) did not work. after detailed discussions with the dealership, i was advised that i needed a complete replacement of the throttle body module at my expense. why should i be held liable for the repair when ford had already admitted that this was a known problem by calling it in for cleaning. this is certainly an issue for the nhtsa to act on. i think that the $882.73 repair bill should be ford's burden, not mine. *tr

Had recall 12n03 performed due to surging, after repair car continued to surge when cold. when approaching stop car would not want to slow down, would put gear in neutral and tach would surge over 2000 rpm's, does this on a consistent basis. continued to drive until car died while driving, got message for throttle body error, took to dealership and was informed that throttle body needs to be replaced at over $600. recall repair done in april and car failed in july. *tr

Car stalls daily three times while driving, dealer cleaned the throttle body still stalls, another dealer cleaned the maf and changed the spark plugs and change cvt transmission fluid, still stalling. need a new throttle body it is a common defect with ford and very dangerous some one will get killed because of it. my cvt transmission start to slip and needs replacement. *tr

Well after i received the recall letter for cleaning of the throttle body, the following week i began hearing a noise as if i was in an airplane when before that was not the case. the i was headed to work one morning and i could not accelerate over 40 mph and my truck started jerking so i immediately pulled over and turned my truck off. i started back up heading straight to ford service dept. as i'm driving the wrench symbol came on which i had seen but when i brought it up to the service man the day they did the recall, he informed me that it was nothing. yet, this particular day when i got to them i just left my truck running to make sure he sees and hears what i am just for him to tell me that i would need a new throttle body and i now need a transmission over 5900 dollars that i didn't think was fair. then he goes on telling me that after this recall they always have trouble with acceleration and transmission problems. so, i asked him why he didn't inform me ? his response was that they only do what ford manufacturer tells them.. so they should be responsible considering they have been aware of this cvt problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle surged forward while in drive and backwards while in reverse. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the failure was unable to be replicated. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000. the current mileage was 167,000. the vin was not available. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was driving 10 mph uphill when the vehicle unexpectedly lunged forward without the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal being engaged. the vehicle came to a stop when pressure was applied to the brake pedal. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. there was a concurrent investigation under nhtsa action number: pe11018 (vehicle speed control). the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

The car lunges forward when at a complete stop; nearly causing accidents (i would rear end someone if i didn't allow more space between the other vehicle and mine than legally allowed.). when you try to run the air conditioning the car shuts off immediately, no matter what speed you are driving at. the car makes noise when turning the steering wheel to the left. i just purchased this car 4 months ago and am now being told i need to replace the transmission, the air compressor and a valve. i noticed the lunging immediately and was able to allow myself more space to make up for the differential, however other people on the road are not aware of my issues with lunging and when they pull in front of me, i may not be able to slow myself. i am highly perturbed by the continuing issues. in looking online i find that i am just one of many people with these very same issues with the freestyle. i absolutely love this car and quite frankly i have 3 more years of paying for it but i need it to run properly. i have 2 young children that i haul in my car as well as their friends and other family members and it's scary. my son is asthmatic and will not be able to stand the car come summer since i am unable to run the air conditioning until i can afford to replace the air compressor. i just wish that i had known that the car was not the "steal" i thought it to be before i bought it. i even spent $2000 more than i had planned to because i liked this car so much. . *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 to 70 mph the vehicle would stall without any warning and then turned it self back on. also, the vehicle would lunge forward on an intermittent basis. the vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer or an independent mechanic. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 75,000. the current mileage was approximately 80,000. the vin was unavailable.

Was coming up to a stop light and the car started to accelerate. when i put on brakes, it accelerated more. to avoid hitting 3 cars in front of me, i went over a curb, up a hill and over and embankment. the car finally stopped in the middle of a side street. the impact of coming off the embankment blew 2 tires and totaled out the bottom of my car. the insurance company has totaled the car. as far as the speed of the car, i was doing 35 until the acceleration failed and when i put on the brakes, it went faster. i read on your website where ford was having problems with lunging and this sounds like what happened with my car. especially when i read from others that have posted there problems with this. i do believe that ford needs to do a recall before someone gets hurt bad. i did go to the er to get checked out but besides seat belt burn, i was fine.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle was difficult to start. also, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle lunged forward independently. both failures recurred numerous times. the dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. however, neither offered any assistance. the failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage was 50,329.

On occasion we felt a little surge when backing up. noticed primarily when backing out of our driver. foot was not on the accelerator at the time. no accidents occurred. surge was brief but braking would still stop the vehicle. also observed a surge when driving at highway speeds. cruise control was not on. the surge was brief, maybe lasting 1-2 secs. in addition we've experienced a loss of acceleration, sluggishness. the throttle control has been replaced. *tr

At low speeds with the a/c on, the vehicle lunges foward (while in drive) or backward (while in reverse). this is noticed most when pulling in or out of a garage or parking space. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving approximately 15 mph, the contact noticed a clunking sound and an abnormal vibration coming from the engine. the failure was also noticeable when the vehicle was parked. additionally, the vehicle would jerk forward or backward when switching gears. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. there was an investigation under nhtsa action number: pe11018 (vehicle speed control) that could have been related to the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 69,500.

Unintended acceleration-i stopped at traffic light and the engine stayed at a high rpm and did not drop to idle rpm. i was able to hold foot on brake until light turned green, the problem did not reoccur. i was not using cruise control. i took the car to my ford dealer and they were unable to find anything wrong. this problem has not recurred but is very frightening when it occurs. *tr

On 9/5/2012, was sitting in drive thru at mcdonald's. when i picked my foot up off the brake to ease forward, the car lunged forward. i quickly step on the brakes hard, but each time i tried to ease forward this occurred a total of three times. luckily, i was far enough behind the car in front of me that this did not cause an incident. this has also occurred on previous occasions, and when backing slowly out of a parking space. i did not think anything of it until this last occurrence. *tr

My vehicle lunged backwards and almost hit a passing car. the engine fail safe mode came on and car continued to lung forward. i noticed this happen when the ac was on. i experienced no issues when the ac was off. ford wanted me to pay $1800 to fix the throttle body and intake valves. after researching on the web, i saw multiple complaints on the same issue. why isn't this being looked into with a high sense of urgency. it's obviously an issue as i also experienced the same issue on multiple occasions and didn't know why until the last time it happened today. i live in tx so understandably it is hot. *tr

Issue 1: the car lunges periodically and without warning. it is very startling and causes panic-reactions to slam the brake to stop. i don't believe the counter-measures i've been using are a very good long-term "defensive-driving" strategy especially if it gets worse nor do i feel its a situation a driver with a family should have to face on a repeat and regular basis. it usually occurs at very low speeds like moving in or out of a parking position (i've almost driven through my garage door and inside garage wall or hit parked cars in parking lots on several occasions), approaching or leaving stop signs and lights (i now slow down triple what i would in another vehicle to avoid getting close to other vehicles in case it lunges), and usually more frequently when the air conditioning is running. this has been on-going for several months but i thought it was my imagination. finally when i researched recalls, i noticed other complaints and feel this is a serious concern if its happening to others as well and should be resolved before someone is seriously injured. my biggest fear is needing to stop suddenly to avoid something like a car or person and the car lunging and striking it anyway. issue 2: the car is losing about 100 miles per gallon of gas compared to 1 year ago and 150 miles per gallon of gas compared to 2 years ago. when i bought the car in dec 2010 it got about 430 miles per tank. now it gets about 280 miles per tank. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated as he came to a stop sign there was a sudden increase on engine rpms. the contact mentioned that he engaged the brake pedal but it failed to stop the vehicle. however, the contact was able to turn the vehicle off and restart it in order to reset the system. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the mechatronics control unit needed to be replaced. the remedy failed to repair the problem. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 96,000 and the current mileage was 98,000.

I just purchased my freestyle in march from a used car dealer. over the last 3 months or so it has started lunging at slow speeds. multiple times coming close to hitting another vehicle after pulling to a full stop at a traffic light and with foot pressed firmly on the brake pedal. i am scared to death to drive this vehicle but since its the only one i have and i'm under contract, its not really a choice at this point. seeing how many of this vehicles are having this same problem, i am sure that it will cause a serious accident. why isn't ford doing anything about this problem??? if i had known about this before making my purchase, i would not have bought it. i love fords cars, my previous vehicle was a taurus, but if they are going to continue to have these kinds of serious problems, i will be rethinking any future purchases!!! *tr

While idling waiting to pick up my children at school. the car started to lunge / accelerate unexpectedly. had i not had my foot on the brake my car would have moved forward and hit the car in front of me or a person leaving the school to go to the parking lot. this is not the first time that this has happened in the recent months and i am afraid that i am going to hit someone while in the stop position at a light or in the parking lot. *tr

Vehicle placed in park on a 100+ degree day with air conditioner running, the idle become erratic, surging to about 1800 rpm and then down to approx 300(almost stall), back to 1500 down to 400(almost stall). vehicle did this several times over a 30 minute period. later that same day, outside temp still 100+, while slowly reversing, vehicle surges several times. had to "stand" on brake pedal to keep the vehicle from moving. later again that day, temps still 100+, while pulling into a parking spot, vehicle surges again. current odometer 106840. had my personal mechanic come out tonight and look at the vehicle. we believe it to be the throttle body. no diagnostic failure codes. computer "scan" indicates that voltages to throttle body may be incorrect(low). i am reporting this, as an internet search returned many hits of the same problem. *tr

First incident, 35 mph driving, wrench light comes on, engine cuts out into fail safe mode, loss of acceleration ability. have to stop and restart. hard to restart for a moment. continues to happen more at higher speeds (55 mph and 65 mph on interstate). also, lunges while foot is on brake, forward or backward depending if in drive or reverse. researched online that many people having the same issue, so cleaned the throttle body and behavior diminished for a week or two. contemplating replacing throttle body out of my own pocket. we purchased this vehicle because of the extra seating for our children, and it has happened the first several times with the children in the car. so now its not trustworthy. please do something to force ford to rectify this issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while sitting at a stop sign the vehicle accelerated independently. the failure recurred 5 times. the contact noticed that the failure recurred most often when the weather temperature was over 100 degrees. the contact was able to secure an appointment with the dealer. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 88,000 and the current mileage was 89,355.

Same issues as investigation # pe11018. i was backing out of a parking space and the engine attempted to surge three separate times. i was in control with my foot on the brake. after exiting the parking lot, i drove about 400-500 feet and stopped. backed up and then as i went forward, the engine surged and then the car went into fail safe mode. i have had the engine surge in reverse over the past year that i have owned it, but this is the first time it has resulted in a "fail safe" mode. it is now in the shop and the dealer believes that it is a throttle body and/or and ecm module failure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving 5 mph,the vehicle accelerated without manual force on two separate occasions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but they were unable to duplicate the problem. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

When driving at low speeds (5-10 mph), whether in forward or reverse, the car will lunge forward (or backward if in reverse). this has happened at least 10 times over the last 4 days, resulting in several near-miss accidents with vehicles, as well as almost hitting a pedestrian multiple times. the engine lunging has only occurred at low speeds, mostly when the temperatures are above 85 degrees. the engine lunging occurs when i'm driving at low speeds, such as when i'm backing out of a parking spot, or driving in traffic in which i'm driving at a low speed. the time before last, it was in the school parking lot when i was picking up my son from summer school. both these times, a pedestrian was almost hit when the car lunged forward. today, i was in traffic in the walmart parking lot when the car lunged forward, almost causing me to hit the car in front of me. when this happens, the check engine symbol lights on the dashboard, as well as the engine failsafe mode coming on. i have to turn the car completely off and back on to get these lights off. *tr

We were backing up in a parking lot and the car accelerated to where we had to slam on the brakes, luckily no one was behind us or we could have caused an accident. it is lurching forward when we are at slow speeds for no reason, i am worried that if someone is in front or back of us we will hit them. this happened about 2 summers ago but a part was replaced and it had not been a problem again until now. i have noticed that it becomes an issue on hot days when my a/c is on. *tr

This has been occurring since the car was purchased in 2005. in hot days when the ac is on the car lunges forwards or backwards. it just depends if you have it in drive or reverse. when sitting at a red light or stop sign the car's rpms go high for a minute then the car slows down and stops. there has been times where it lunges forwards so hard it almost hits the car or whatever is in front of you. ford needs to fix this problem before a death results. if you are aware of this problem and ford is too then why is nothing being done!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was driving 4 mph when the vehicle began to accelerate independently. the failure recurred four or more times both forward and in reverse. the vehicle had not been taken to a dealer or a mechanic for diagnosis or repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 57,000 and the current mileage was 65,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while idling in the driveway, the vehicle lunged forward abnormally. the contact applied the brakes and the vehicle came to a stop. the vehicle had not been diagnosed. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 152,000.

Road trip from bc to ontario, driving through mountains, first occurrence in chase, bc, at dairy queen car lunged in drive through, heard whiny noise from engine, gets worse when turning steering wheel. last occurrence on trip, driving back into hope, bc, after cruise control want to speed up a bit but no power, get out of cruise control and car stalls while going about 60 kph!!! manage to get off the highway onto merging lane. husband checked fluid levels but everything is topped up. manage to start up again after 3 tries and get home safely. address is in canada, please ignore californa and zip code. *tr

Our ford freestyle will randomly surge backward/forward at a high rate of speed when going from park to reverse, or going from reverse to drive, or going from park to drive. this has caused my wife to almost hit several cars. it will also surge forward when sitting at a stop sign or red light. this has caused us to have to slam on our breaks several times to avoid a accident. there needs to be a recall on this vehicle before someone is injured or killed because of ford's failure. *tr

Car surges when at low speeds without applying pressure of gas, transmission is shifting very wierd, kicks hard then the next day works. *tr

Vehicle lunged forward in parking lot with both my wife's feet pushing the brake pedal to the floor. hit parking divider and my wife was able to get the car into park. engine continued to accelerate in park, then resumed normal idle. dash service and engine lights appeared. taken to ford garage immediately. dealership resisting coverage under extended ford powertrain warranty. *tr

For a number of weeks, my 2005 ford freestyle has lunged forward while sitting still. after the car lunges forward the dashboard readout says: "engine failure mode". this happened on friday july 6th while stopped at a red light and almost lunged into speeding traffic, and more recently on friday august 3rd while at a stop sign. this issue comes 18 months after replacing the vehicle transmission at 50,000 miles at the cost of more than $5,000. i wish to report this issue to the nhtsa as i am seeing many other reports for this very issue reported and think that this needs to be a recall as this is a very big safety risk. *tr

On a hot day (98 degrees) when driving with the air conditioning on in my 2005 ford freestyle it surged ahead in the mall parking lot and i almost hit someone walking in front of the car. this vehicle has acted like this on hot days when the a/c is on and running in the past. you have to be very careful and aware that this will happen, if someone was to borrow my car i would be afraid that they would run someone over. it happens in both forward and reverse and usually only at slow speeds/idle speed. its dangerous in parking lots when you are both pulling into the parking spots you have to brake quickly or you'll speed up and hit a parked car in front of you, then backing out of the spot it does the same thing. this is a serious problem and needs to be taken care of. one time last year on a long drive through philadelphia this happened and the car stalled and locked up at a green light. we just want to know how to fix it. *tr
