We have classified the 236 complaints from 2005 Ford Freestar about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
While traveling on an interstate, it was noticed that rpm of the vehicle rose instantly on its own. when the accelerator was depressed there was no acceleration. the vehicle no longer was able to accelerate on its own. the next exit to a highway was used as the vehicle coasted to a stop on the side of the highway. a nearby policeman arrived at the scene to assist by pushing my vehicle to a nearby gas station to prevent other vehicles from hitting me. the vehicle was then towed to the dealership where a diagnosis revealed that the torque converter had failed. the vehicle is currently in shop and expected repairs should be done in one week. there were no signs leading up to the torque converter failure. the vehicle did not drive any different before the event than it did a year ago. failure occurred around 92,500 miles. *tr
Wife was driving the 2005 ford freestar van and came up to a stop light. the light turns green so she stepped on the gas and the van moved forward a few feet and then nothing. thankfully she was able to coast to the side of the road, where she put it in park and back into drive and the van would not move. the van made no noise to indicate anything was wrong with the transmission. *tr
I was driving during rush hour traffic with my 3 young children, when i came to a stop sign. i went to turn the corner when my minivan wouldn't go forward at all. we barely missed being rear ended by the other car turning behind us. i was lucky enough to coast into a residential area and pull over. *tr
My wife was driving home from work in our 2005 ford freestar when the transmission failed. this happened during rush hour traffic and was very traumatic for my wife as several cars almost rear ended her. we had the van towed to the ford dealer who told us it was going to be $2700 to replace the torque converter and pump shaft. after doing some research we see that ford is aware of this problem and the nhtsa is investigating. a warning from ford to those who are putting their lives in peril by driving these vans with defective transmissions would have been nice. what if she had gotten into an accident over this? we'll count our blessing that we will only be out $2,700 (i guess). *tr
Driving on busy freeway in the fast lane at 75mph with cruise control engaged. suddenly a loud revving sound and dash gauge showed rpms at well above 5,000. tapped the brake to turn off cruise control, and felt confused because pressing gas pedal resulted in no acceleration but rpms would go through the roof. i was traveling in the fast lane, so i put my right blinker on and thank god was able to safely maneuver over two lanes in heavy and fast-moving traffic and semi-trucks to the right lane. was also blessed to be on a fairly steeply inclined portion of the freeway, so that i was able to continue coasting enough to take the next freeway exit and turn into a gas station instead of being stranded on freeway shoulder or in the road blocking traffic. called the nearest ford dealership, who sent a tow truck to pick up van. i told the service tech what happened and he said that they would examine the car and call me with their diagnosis. later, they called and said that the transmission was shot, and that they would have no way of knowing what specific part of the transmission failed unless they did more extensive dismantling of the transmission, which would end up costing more money in labor. he said we should just buy a brand new transmission, which would be $3,100. i got online and did a bing search for '2005 ford freestar transmission' to maybe find the repair cheaper, but instead i found all of these complaints from other freestar owners. now, i don't even want another defective transmission put into that van because i will never drive it again, especially with my two young sons in the car. i could have been killed had the car stopped in a hairier traffic situation, like on a railroad track or as i was turning in front of oncoming traffic. i want the blue book trade-in value for this vehicle so that i can buy another vehicle not a ford. this is a travesty of justice that ford has been able to get away with letting these defective cars stay out on the road. *tr
I was driving my 2005 ford freestar on the garden state parkway in south jersey at 65 miles per hour in the right lane when i realized i could not give the car any gas. the highway has small hills and turns, and i had driven approximately 50 miles prior to this occurrence, driving my son and his friends to school. after pushing the gas pedal, the van did not respond and i began to coast. i pulled the car over to a safe area with my hazard lights flashing. since the car did not respond after turning it off and starting it again, i placed a called to aaa. as i waited, cars and trucks traveling at full speed past me were a bit alarming. i was towed off the parkway and to a local transmission shop as recommended. after investigation, it was determined that the transmission failed and a new one is being put in the van. this will cost $2300 and leave me without a vehicle for work for almost a week. there was no warning to this occurring. no warning lights were lit up, and incidents such as this had not occurred prior to this. *tr
My 2005 ford freestar transmission went out as i was driving. it has less than 50,000 miles on it. *tr
While driving at highway speed, it felt like the transmission went into neutral. the engine will rev and is able to be shifted into another gear, but doesn't move. there was no warning - no light or bell, no noises, no smells. we were forced to pull off the road and coast to a safe place with our 2 children in the car. there are approximately 80,000 miles on the vehicle. we have yet to repair the vehicle as it just occurred. *tr
Our 2005 ford freestar loses power and engine stalls, this has happened 4 times within 6-9 month period and we have taken it to a ford dealership each time. each time a different code comes up, we have the work done and ultimately it happens again. this happens and no power to get off the road, expressway etc. a very dangerous situation with 2 children in the back. *tr

Traveling on busy 2-lane highway at night..approx 50 miles an hour..suddenly car revved up and went into neutral..engine running fine. transmission would not shift into any gear. there were cars everywhere..dark highway..no street lights. this could have been a very serious situation. luckily, i was able to coast to a pull off point without any injuries. there was no warning of any kind that this was going to happen...no warning lights, no transmission shifts or slippage, no smoke, no smell. since this occurred out-of-town--vehicle had to be towed over 100 miles. quoted cost of repair at local ford dealer--$3,000. needless to say, it has been sitting since this happened because i do not have funds to get it repaired.*tr

Driving down the roadway at 50 mph the vehicle suddenly acted as if it was in neutral. there was no forward or reverse gears, the engine ran fine, just no power to the wheels. there were no warning signs of the failure...no erratic shifting, noises, etc. we were just driving down the freeway, not accelerating or doing anything to strain the drivetrain. it was towed to the ford dealership where they diagnosed the problem as a stripped output shaft on the torque converter. the transmission had to be removed, torque converter replaced along with the output shaft and several seals, transmission fluid, etc. total cost of repair was $1552. *tr
This is my 2nd complaint on this vehicle. the 1st complaint was filed with the nhtsa on 4/17/10 (odi# 10326164). this complaint also pertains to the transmission. on tuesday, nov. 2, 2010 as i was driving the "transaxel" warning light on the dash started to blink. i took the vehicle to the same shop that installed the new torque converter on 4/16/10. after the vehicle was examined i was told that there is a problem with 3rd gear in the transmission which will soon result in a transmission failure. the repairs will cost approx. $2000.00. *tr
2005 ford freestar. consumer writes in regards to transmission failure recall notice. *smd the consumer stated in november 2010, the transmission failed, with no symptoms of failure. the transmission was replaced. in august 2012, the torque converter was replaced. the consumer believed only the torque converter should have been replaced in 2010, and not the entire transmission. the consumer is seeking reimbursement for the transmission.
Sudden, premature failure of transmission that had been properly maintained and operated while in parking lot at work, fortunately nominal speed at time. vehicle stopped dead, towed to local certified mechanic who diagnosed problem as torque converter failure where converter splines where practically shredded due to inadequate hardening of metal parts; ford has known about this problem for years and chooses to ignore this safety issue. cost to repair, not including lost work time, of $1,700. classs action lawsuit applicable in this case. likely to be my last ford product unless i receive some form of reimbursement, compensation in this matter. rises to level of reckless endangerment.
2005 ford freestar. pulling out into an intersection and vehicle lost all power. transmission is gone. have not gotten repair costs yet but i anticipate over $2000. i have seen that there are over 1000 complaints in the internet for the same issue. i could have been killed because i had no warning of this happening and there was on coming traffic approaching me. *tr
Stopped at stop sign and as soon as i took off the gears would not shift and i could not accelerate. i had coasted to a side street where i sat until my van was towed to my mechanic. after mechanic's review he stated a faulty torque converter caused damage to all parts inside the transmission rendering the transmission useless. the transmission had to be completely rebuilt. *tr
Complete loss of drive power from transmission. loss of power was in morning traffic with three kids onboard. vehicle rolled to a stop barely out of traffic. no repair completed. loss of power came from failed transmission with the likely cause being the torque converter. *tr

2005 ford freestar transmission. sudden and complete loss of power due to transmission failure. occurred at 60km/h on busy road. repair of transmission was replacement of torque converter shaft splines. warranty was 5 yr or 100,000 km. vehicle was still under the 5 year time for warranty. total mileage was 110,000. my personal mileage was under the 100,000 warranty but vehicle had 13,000 dealer driven kilometers on it. ford declined coverage due to mileage. transmission repair technician stated ford freestars have underpowered transmission and they fix them constantly. *tr
I drive a 2005 ford freestar and on sept. 29 2010 while on the interstate the transmission (or something similar) quit working. no symptoms or warnings beforehand. i checked the transmission fluid, and it was full. i was able to safely maneuver to the shoulder of the road and have it towed. nothing has been done to correct the failure just yet but i am pretty sure a new (or refurbished) transmission will need to be put into the van. *tr
The van lost all automotive power suddenly and we almost got hit by oncoming traffic and had to wait for the police to push us out of the street. we had the van towed to the ford dealership and had to replace the torque converter for $1700. we were told that it was a problem with the spline of the torque converter. the ford dealership knew about the defect investigation and told us we had to have it repaired at the dealership to be eligible for a refund if a recall was issued. it could have easily lost power in an busy intersection or on a train track and we would have been seriously injured. please issue the recall on this already. it has been under investigation for over two years. what is the holdup?
My '05 freestar died on sept. 25 while i was on my way to kentucky to my sons graduation from army basic training. i was coming over a bridge that i couldn't pull over on when the transmission stopped pulling. luckily, i was going fast enough it happened and coming down a hill to pull over when it died. i had it serviced last year in sept. had a tune-up in february and had the oil changed every 3000 miles. my family and i, which consisted of my husband, mother, father, daughter and her 9 month old baby and sister-in-law, had to rent a car in alabama to continue on to kentucky to my sons graduation. i had to pay aamco the grand total of $2400 to rebuild a transmission, that the ford place told me should not have went out. i called the national ford company and they were absolutely no help. *tr

Our 2005 ford freestar lost power to the drivetrain on august, 17, 2010 due to a problem with the torque converter. the vehicle had to be pushed by police (during rush hour) into a nearby parking lot. it was subsequently towed to the dealership where it has been for a week to receive repairs. there was no prior indication of any sort that a problem existed. the engine would rev but there was no forward or reverse power to the wheels. ford has been very resistant to help with any financial aid for the repairs because ford says the car is out of warranty. no one in the vehicle was injured when the incident occurred. the disabled vehicle caused a traffic jam until the police arrived to help. *tr
