Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2012 Ford Focus

The door does not close from one minute to the next the car was not running.

Latch of rear driver door will not latched. it was repaired and within 2 weeks the driver's door will not stay latched. according to what i have read, ford is aware of the issue and has issued a recall for other models, but will not issue a recall for the focus

While driving, the rear driver door opened up on it's own. pulled over to close but it won't stay shut. had to tie it closed with a bungee cord. very dangerous. i called my dealer and was told there was a lock recall for a ford fusion but not the focus. it is the same lock! they want $600 to fix it.

My driver side door swung open while driveing home, luckily i wasn't on the freeway just surface streets and not too far from home, the door ajar light came on. when i got home i checked to see if maybe it was stuck in the closed position, it was not, i closed the latch and attepmted to see if it would hold and a simple pull would open it.

The latch on the drivers side rear door quit latching and the door won't shut. i have seen several complaints and articles online about other people who own the same vehicle having this problem when driving the down the road or pulling into a parking lot and the door just unlatching and opening all of a sudden and no longer closing. luckily, mine happened to stop latching while i was parked and putting something into the backseat. i have owned my car for a little over a year and it is only a 2012 model and i have had many issues with it, such as the radio system and i have had to have an update installed to the transmission. i think that it isn't right for a card door on a 2012 car to stop latching all of a sudden and it is very dangerous that other people have had the same problem while their car is in motion. i feel this should be a recall on the 2012 ford focus.

The rear driver side door will not latch properly, i have to restrain the door with a seat belt in order for the door to not open while driving, there is no current recall on this model for ford focus but there is on other ford vehicles for the same issue, this is the second time this vehicle has had door latch issues, the first was just under a year prior for the driver door, which opened while i was driving, the latch at that time was covered under the vehicles extended warrant but took over a month to repair at the dealer, i do not have any police reports, but when the second latch failed i did file a complaint with fords main 800 number where they told me the product would be replaced, upon talking with the ford dealership to schedule an appointment to have the repairs done, the dealership promptly told me that the repairs are not covered and that i would have to pay $700 to have their faulty product repaired. as of right now the door latch remains un-repaired and i have a seat belt tethered to the rear door to keep it from opening while the vehicle is in motion.

My driver side front door will not latch light and dinger comes on the door will shut but won't latch l. you can pull door right open. the vehicle was stationary when this happened i was on my way to work and stopped at store it was fine when i got back in it wouldn't latch drove to work holding door shut.

The car door in the back seat on the drivers side of my 2012 ford focus se, flung open as i was making a sharp turn while i was attempting to drive into my son's apartment complex. luckily my two children who were seated in the back seats were wearing their seatbelts, or this could've been much worse. the door latch no longer wants to latch on. the door does not close. the door ajar sensor keeps showing and an annoying beeping sound keeps going off to let me know that the back drivers seat door is ajar. fortunately there was no accident, therefore law enforcement was not contacted or needed. we safely pulled over and attempted to close the door. again, the door will not stay closed. the car is attempting to lock the door but cannot. you can hear it. also the door handles appear to still be in working condition. it seems that it's the latch that does not close around the metal bar when closed. there is not a current recall on the 2012 ford focus se, but from stories on the internet, i'm not the first to have this happen to this year and model. this is not safe and needs to be thoroughly investigated as soon as possible. there are two or three other ford cars on recall for the faulty latches. i truly believe that this model needs to be looked at as well. thank you. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the driver side door opened without warning while the vehicle was in motion. the contact had to secure the door with bungee cords. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 54,000.

455000 miles - driver side door latches/locks/linkages failed to secure/latch the door. the incident occurred while backing out from parking space, and presented dangerous conditions as the door swung open in parking lot traffic. the latches/locks/linkages will require repair as the door cannot be secured. this is a second occurrence of failed door latches/locks/linkages for the vehicle. first occurrence reported on 03/02/2016 (nhtsa id number: 10839377) involved rear driver side passenger door (currently the door is fastened by ratchet straps). it is matter of time before the remaining passenger side doors latches/locks/linkages fail.

Front driver's side door suddenly failed to stay closed. we have to use bungee cords to keep the door shut while driving down the highway. also, when parked the lights stay on draining the battery. we had this problem last year with a different door on the same car and had to replace the latch. this is clearly a systematic problem and ford needs to address this. as it stands right now i no longer feel safe driving my ford focus. this is also getting very expensive for us fix.

I entered the vehicle through the drivers side door while it was parked in my driveway, when i went to close the door the door latch did not engage and the door just bounced back open. i contacted my local for dealer who suggested that i tether the door down so that i could drive it to their location. once i arrived at the dealership they proceeded to tell me my car is no longer under warranty and that yes there is a recall on some door latches my car did not qualify. they then proceeded to write up an estimate for the work for a bill totaling more that $450.

While driving and making a turn back drivers side door flew open.

Rear passenger door on driver side will not latch in the closed position. required door to be secured with rope from the inside to prevent door from opening while operating vehicle. vehicle is now susceptible to theft of contents or vehicle itself since door will not secure in a locked position.

When i approached my vehicle parked in a private parking lot i noticed the left rear door was ajar. i tried to shut it multiple times with no success. i ended up using a strap to keep my door closed, which seemed very unsafe, and took my vehicle to the nearest ford service center for repairs. i was eventually determined that it was a faulty door latch that was extremely expensive to have replaced. ugh!

During normal operation of the front passenger side door while the car was stationary, a defect in the engineering and manufacture of the door latch assembly occurred. the door will no longer stay closed on its own. this presented an immediate danger upon leaving the parking space, as the door swung open when turning the vehicle. the vehicle cannot be safely driven in this condition.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 15 mph, the passenger side door opened independently. the contact had a passenger that held the door secured meanwhile the vehicle in motion. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the latch mechanism failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Failed door latch on drivers door. was pulling out and chime sounded indicating door was ajar. tried to close but latch was not engaging. had to drive home while holding the door to prevent it from flying open in traffic. this is my 2nd latch incident in five months. i had the passenger door repaired for the same issue. this should not be happening twice on a car with less than 35,000 miles (or any mileage). ford needs to address this potentially dangerous situation and issue a recall.

Came out of the store, loaded groceries into car, opened driver door and got in. tried to close door and it bounced back open. attempted to reset the door latch, but the door would not latch. had to drive the car home while holding the door closed. door will not close. shows door ajar warning unless i push it very hard and leave it.

Door latches not working. first started with right rear door failure, then migrated to driver's door flying open on driver when making a right hand turn. ford will not cover this because the car is out of warranty.

Door latches don't seem to be broken but passenger door wont close at all or stay shut. i was driving on the highway when suddenly the door just blew open.

The drivers side rear door flew open while driving. door latch broken. i had the passenger front door two month ago do the same thing with someone in the front seat at the time this happen. i filled a complaint with your department about it then. here it happen again & ford said that there is no recall for this problem yet. what will it take for something to be done with this safety issue. someone could fall out of the vehicle when this happened, if there was a child in the seat he or she could have reached for the door to try to close it and could have gotten hurt with the door or even falling out of the vehicle and maybe lose there life. what about if the vehicle was involved in an accident & the door did not stay closed? the person at that door could be ejected from the vehicle and lose there life also or become disable for life because of this problem. never mind the cost to fix this problem to the consumer because the parts are not cheap to repair. the last door latch i had to pay $239.17 for the part & had the car down for several days while i waited for the part to come in because its not an item that the dealer stocks locally. i am a mechanic by trade my whole life which puts me in the business for over 45 years. what about people that have to pay someone to fix this problem because they are not capable of doing it them self. the cost is quit high for a defect in the vehicle that should have a recall. ford has recall for other models with the same problem with door latches that wont latch closed.this is in reference to a 2012 ford focus sel model.

Driver rear door will not latch. when trying to close rear door latch will not engage and keep door closed.

Closed my drivers door in the driveway and the door wouldn't latch closed.

As i was commuting to my job, i was making a right turn off of us highway 1 and the driver's door flew open. i had to hold my door closed the whole drive to my house to have my dad look at it and tell me one of the latches is broken.

This is concerning my 2012 ford focus sedan. about two weeks ago as we were departing from peter pepper pizza, on a turn my rear left door opened by itself. my family was on the back and where put in danger if they were leaning against the door or incoming traffic was coming and could have hit the door or my family could have been ejected. like seat belts i believe door latch failure is a serious safety issue. i drive now with a ratchet tie down that hold both doors together, preventing the door to swing open and cause damage. now i can't drive with my baby car seat and rear passenger seating is useless due to this door latch failure.

My vehicle was parked in the driveway when i opened the rear driver-side door to put my daughter in the back seat, continued to shut it, and the door would not shut. if pushed completely in, it would slowly swing open after removing my hand from the door. the door will not latch and is now being held shut using bungee cords in my backseat. this is a huge safety!!

My wife and 6 year old daughter had gone to the store in our 2012 ford focus. when they arrived they parked the car and they both got out of the car - my wife from her side (the drives-side front) and our daughter from her door - the drivers-side rear (left side of the car), where she usually sits. they each closed their doors and went in to do their shopping. when they returned to the car 15 minutes later, my wife got in her driver's-side door (front); our daughter got in using the passenger-side rear door (on the right side of the car), climbed into her booster seat and put her seat belt on. as my wife started the car, she noticed the "door ajar" indicator showing on the dashboard, noting that our daughter's door was not closed properly. after drawing this to our daughter's attention, our daughter tried to close the door but could not get it to latch. my wife got out of the car and tried herself to close the door, but also was not able to get the door to latch. my wife called me immediately and i drove out to meet her. when i arrived, i also tried to get the door to stay latched shut, but was unable. i tried activating and activating the child lock, moving the latch open and closed manually, but was still not able to get the door to latch. i secured the door closed using the seat belt and took my daughter home in our other car, while my wife took the ford focus to a nearby dealer. the dealer examined the latch and confirmed that there were no signs of tampering, and then confirmed that the latch had simply given out - much like the latches in the ford fusion and ford fiesta vehicles that had been subject to recall. this is a serious safety concern, and am thankful that the "door ajar" indicator was working, because this defect could have cost us our daughter's life. the dealer installed a new latch, costing us over $700.

While driving on the interstate 275 in pinellas county the drivers side rear door flew open the interstate was curving towards the right. my speed was 65 mph and my 19 month old son was in his car seat directly next to the door. the door slammed back into him causing the sun shade visor to fall off hitting him. the door now will not stay latched and i've had to tie it shut and move my sons car seat.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the rear driver side door latch became inoperable. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was acknowledged that the drivers side rear door latch had failed and would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 89,000. the vin was not available.

After backing out of a parking spot, my "door ajar" signal came on, i reopened and closed and my doors and noticed that my driver side door was not latching. after looking into this problem, i've learned that many 2012 ford focus' have this issue. the dealership insists that there will not be a recall on this issue, but i object. someone could have been seriously hurt in this incident.

This complaint is for a second door latch malfunction. the first complaint was on the front driver side door (odi# 10818622 ). this one is for the drivers side back door of the same car. it malfunctioned while our daughter was driving on a highway and it flew open. if there had been a child in the back seat that had taken of the seat belt (we know how children can be) that child would have fallen out.

The passenger front door wouldn't close on 5/22/16 when my wife and i were leaving to drive 25 miles east into town from our home in tonopah az. i taped the door up on the same day and we got a ride into town to our bible meeting and then to the store. on 5/24/16 i took our ford focus into jones ford in buckeye az to have their service department look at it. while i waited i went online to see if this issue we had with our door has been an recurring problem with this model and found a story that cbs5az covered back in september of 2015 of many az residents having this same issue and not just in az. these doors on this vehicle can pop open at any given time w/o warning, that's very dangerous and someone can lose their life. jones ford told me there are currently no recalls or help from ford motor, so i phoned ford motor from my cell right away and contacted their customer service. i was able to make my complaint and i was given care #cas-9558178 and told that a request for financial assistance on my behalf would be put in to pay the $600 bill, but no guarantees and if i paid out of my own pocket to keep the receipt in case ford does do a recall. i drove this dangerous unpredictable car home and took the tape off and rolled the windows up and pushed the passenger front door as close as it would stay. i feel ford should either buy back this dangerous vehicle and let me choose a different product and or make my monthly payment until i can drive this vehicle that's not safe. why should i make a payment on something i can't drive or better yet, if any dealership who knowingly sold these units to people w/o disclosing these facts regarding the possibility of the doors just popping open w/o warning, they should be forced to buy these vehicles back and give me and other customers our deposit and every monthly payment we've made. any door can pop open!!!

Takata recall. started my car and shut the door i noticed that the drivers door would not shut.

The drivers side rear door latch would not latch. i had to tie up the door from the inside and tape the door shut from the exterior. with the door not able to latch the car could not be driven or the door would fly open. i bought a latch from ford and replaced the entire assembly.at a shop. total cost over $350. i may have purchased the same latch that came with the vehicle. this could happen again on any door. the car was parked when i came back i noticed the door would not shut. therefore i tied it and taped it to get home.

The front driver side door fails to latch normally and must be repeatedly slammed hard to get it to latch and stay closed. the door has also come unlatched and opened while slowly driving around corners in a parking garage. i believe the problem is in the door latch itself. my ford dealer said this problem on this car was not covered by a recall yet and quoted me $400 for the repair, though i've noticed similar recalls on ford fiestas and edges of the same model year. i've also noticed that this problem is already under investigation by the nhtsa.

While pulling back from a parking lot, the rear driver side door signal showed up, and the door opened. from that moment, it is impossible to close correctly the door as the latch doesn't close correctly. i guess it is related to investigation pe16001.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 45 mph, the driver side door opened without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 73,000.

The drivers side passenger door sont close and it wont stay closed. it just flaps open. the lock mechanism never engages.

My front driver's side door latch is defective. i was getting into the car on 4/23/16, closed the door and it bounced back open. the latch would not latch until i spent approximately 10 minutes pulling the door back open and closing it again. twice now (once while stationary and once while driving) my door has popped open. the first time the was stationary, the back door was closed and popped my front door open. the second time i was driving around a corner while leaving work and my door just popped open. i have been in contact with ford and they have said that there are many ford focus' with my same issue, but that they haven't issued a recall. i am now having to pay $59.00 to have them inspect my door. if my extended warranty approved it i will have to pay either a $50 or $100 deductible to get it fixed. if they do not approve it, if i wanted it fixed i will have to pay around $750 to get it replaced.

Driver's door latch failed, causing the door to remain unlatched and swing open freely. i had to tie the door shut in order to drive it to the dealer to be repaired. the repair cost me $585.70. ford has been making cars for over 100 years, literally all of which have had doors. you would think that they would have a solid design for a door latch by now. luckily this happened to break when the car was parked, but i imagine it could have caused an accident or injury if it had happened while the car was driving. i still have three other doors with presumably the same faulty latch design - how long until those fail as well? i now have to carry a rope in my trunk in case it happens again while i am away from my home.

I have had *2* of my door latches fail. driver door, and driver-side passenger door. i have had the driver door latch replaced (april 21st, 2016) and the 2nd latch just failed but not yet replaced (july 2nd, 2016). the first replacement cost me $381.47, and none of it was covered by ford as it is not part of a recall.

The 2012 ford focus referenced above has had issues with the passenger side rear door since april of 2016. randomly, the driver's notification center (information message) would show the rear passenger side door was ajar while the vehicle was initially being started & that same day while the car was in motion. note, i use the car only for myself & rarely ever use that door as i do not have children & usually have only 1 passenger if any. only a couple of days later, the door itself would fly open--regardless whether the car was "in park", being "revered" or being operated in traffic, whether locally or on longer distanced travel...highly dangerous, let alone distracting & unnerving. i called my local ford dealer(s) & was told that my car's vin was not covered or been involved in any kind of recall for such problem, even though there were several thousands of other ford focus vehicles which were covered.i literally had to operate my car which i need daily for work, & school with the seat-belt located in the rear rightside of my focus bound around the arm handle as to avoid having the door fly open. by this point, the door would no longer latch or close at all. even securing my car at night was impossible. if i locked the car, the alarm would randomly blare at all hours of the morning causing me & my neighbors to panic. meanwhile i would have to run to find my keys to deactivate the alarm. for a couple of months my car had to be parked unlocked every night because of this faulty latch. despite attempts to have my ford dealer help with this concern, no one ever called me back from autonation ford in sanford fl or from greenway ford in orlando. my immediate family has owned fords since i was a child & between us currently have 3 ford vehicles. however this particular 2012 focus is my (alexandra) 1st car & i must say i am extremely disappointed.

In march of this year, my driver's door latch broke unexpectedly. i went into a restaurant and the door closed fine. however, when i returned to open my door, it would not lock. as a result, i had to take my car to a ford service center to fix it. they told me that it was not covered by the warranty and there was no recall. i had to pay over 600 dollars to get it fixed. last week, i went to the grocery store and the rear driver's side door latch broke. i talked to ford customer care and they told me that i had to take it in for repairs. this is the second time a door latch broke on my car in less than three months! the car has never been in an accident and the doors were working fine until the door latches suddenly broke. both times, my car was parked when i experienced the door latch failures. i have never experienced a problem like this with older cars and i am the only owner of this car.

4/14/16 my wife drove from ft. lauderdale to orlando with my one year old son to visit her sister in the hospital since she was having a baby at winnie palmer hospital in orlando. upon leaving the hospital, she opened the door to get in and when she tried to shut it, it would not latch. we had to get it towed to a ford dealership(sun state ford) nearby because i told her it was not safe to drive it even 8 miles to the dealership. i called the closest dealership to let them know that it was coming and they told me that this is a recall item. but upon researching the model and vin # i was told that this model is not covered under the recall so i would have to pay out of pocket for all repairs. the car is a 2012 ford focus hatchback and only has about 17k miles on it. i asked if other vehicles have the recall why didn't this one have it since it is just as dangerous regardless of the specific model. i was told that is up to ford to decide that and if the vehicle doesn't fall under the recall then we would have to pay for it. i have to have them inspect all of the doors now which they will probably charge me for as well. so my wife is in orlando with our one year old without a car and standing at the hospital with our son and a car seat in her hand waiting for a family member to pick her up. i don't feel we should have to pay for this. do i have any recourse with ford for cost to repair this?

I own a ford focus 2012. the door latch is defective and the drivers side door does not close. while my specific model is not being recalled, similar models are for the same cause. this cannot be concidence and now ford is charging me 600 to fix it. i've read online that this is common for ford focus models. i do have documentation of them replacing the latch. i also requested that i keep the old latch for proof.

Right front door open while driving, door latch will not latch door closed. latch is defective. had to tie door with a rope to get vehicle home in the middle of the night. this vehicle is a 2012 ford focus sel model with a millage of 61590. this could have had a bad outcome if someone was in the passenger seat at the time this happened & was leaning against the door they could have fallen out & maybe struck by a car that was passing by even if the seat belt was holding them . also if someone was on the side of the vehicle they could have gotten hit by the door as it opened. ford has a recall for other vehicle with the same problem including the 2012 ford fiesta.

The door latch on the drivers side rear door failed. the door now does not latch at all and will swing open while driving i've had to tie the door down to prevent it from swinging open while driving. no damage has been done to the door.

My 2012 ford focus has had two doors break during operation as is described in your current investigation titled "nhtsa action number: pe16001". the first door that malfunctioned was the driver's door. the second was the rear passenger door. in both cases, i had been driving the vehicle and parked, then upon attempting to close the door it would no longer latch. from that point on it was impossible to latch the door closed. in the case of the second/rear passenger door, my girlfriends' 9 year old sister was in that seat...when i went to open it for her to get out i discovered the door was open. this is extremely dangerous, obviously. i have also had to spend approximately $1000 repairing these doors at my local ford dealership, as the car isn't operable in that condition and ford denied my requests to pay for the repairs. i am aware that a similar problem in other ford models has resulted in a recall, but for my specific model just your on-going investigation has taken place thusfar.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while attempting to park the vehicle, the rear driver side door opened. the driver was able to shut the door by putting a cord on the inside door handle and tie the cord to the seat's headrest. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for further inspection. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 46,000.
