We have classified the 14 complaints from 2012 Ford Focus about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
Passenger door will not latch. drove for +/- 200 feet activating auto-lock while pulling on door to close it helped and it finally latched. later i was on the freeway driving 65-70 it popped open again. after slowing down and struggling to hold the door shut, i managed to get it to close again because the auto-lock kept clicking.
In march 2016 the driver side door latch broke. as we were getting ready to leave home i opened the car door, but when i tried to close the door it would not latch. at this time, we were lucky that the car was in our driveway and not in motion or away from home. we had to tie the door closed to get it to our local ford dealer. the dealer decided the latch was defective and needed to be replaced. this cost almost $500. then, in july 2016 the latch on the front passenger door failed. in this instance, while my 16 year old son was driving, the passenger door swung open. luckily, it did not hit anything as it swung open. he slowed down for his passenger to close the door, but just like the driver side door earlier this year, the door would not latch. my son's friend had to hold the door closed the entire drive to our house (about 5 miles on a highly traveled road that has a speed limit of 55 mph). this could have been a very serious or dangerous situation if my son had been driving on a highway or had been alone in the car. we immediately called our local ford dealer to schedule an appointment and called ford customer relations in hopes that they would assist with the cost of replacement. even though the ford focus is under investigation for many vehicles having the same issue and other ford vehicles have been recalled for the same issue, ford has stated that they can not help with the cost of replacement because the vehicle has not been recalled. to make matters worse, there are no replacement latches available in the dallas area, and it will be almost a week before a new latch will be available. we also requested to have both rear latches replaced because i no longer feel it is safe for my 16 year old son to drive this vehicle with its original latches, but i was told that the rear latches are on back order and will not be available for at least a month.
The driver side door would not close once i got into the car. i had to drive my car while holding the door shut. this is such a safety hazard! i took the car directly to san tan ford in gilbert, az. san tan ford explained to me that there was not a recall on the ford focus yet, only on the fusion and the fiesta. i am furious to find out there has been over 73 ford focus vehicles reported with this latch issue and a recall has not been made. i am also aware that these malfunctioning latches can break on any of the doors in these vehicles at anytime. i do not feel safe having any family members including grandchildren ride with me in my car. san tan ford gave me an estimate of $529.00 to fix one latch. in order for all of my latches to be replaced it will be over $2,116.00. this is unethical and hazardous to their consumers and families.
The door latch on my driver's door failed just after i got in it and began driving up my street. the door would not stay closed and an alert sounded. the ford dealership has told me i have to replace the latch at a cost of approximately $800.
The driver side door will not latch closed. i cannot lock the car because of this. only 33k miles on the vehicle. it will bounce back when it is shut and will open if not held closed while driving. initial incident occurred when trying to close the door and it bounced back open.
I was driving down the street and my rear driver side door just opened as i was making a turn! luckily my work laptop did not fall out of the car or the door didn't hit the car next to me! i pulled over to shut the door but it would not stay shut. after further investigation it appears that something must be broken inside the door because it will not latch! as such i had to go buy some rope to tie the door handle to the door handle on the opposite side in order to keep the door closed so i could drive home safely.
Driver's door latch failed and door would not close. car was parked and i had it locked it with the remote control. had it repaired by my mechanic. concerned other doors will have the same problem.
My rear driver side door latch is not catching. i was driving less than 25 mph and the door flung open with a 7 year old child in the back seat. i have attempted to close the door and it has not closed. i called to see if this was covered under the recall and the ford customer service rep states that my car was not built in the ford plant with the recall. this is a concern of mine because no matter what plant my car was built in no matter what plant it should be covered. this is clearly a part defect concern.
Left rear door latch broke. the door latch will not latch and the door will not stay closed. a bungee cord was needed to hold the door close and had to acknowledge that the door was open on the car warning system. potential of someone falling out of car without bungee cords holding it closed. vehicle was stationary when the latch failed.
Driver side door latches/unlatches whenever it wants while driving. door won't latch shut when entering or exiting car. driver door opened on its own driving down freeway today 7/23/16 and wouldn't latch back when i tried to shut the door. this has been going on for several months and has happened on multiple occasions. my car is less than 4 years old i shouldn't be having these problems. it is highly dangerous and needs to be addressed before serious injury or death occurs.
Driver side rear door will not latch closed. it happened when i arrived home and removed items from the back seat. have to use seat belt to secure the door closed because the local ford dealer wants to charge over 500 dollars to install a new latch assembly. when i drive the warning light on the instrument panel when come on every few minutes saying the rear door in open. this issue is very unsafe because i have a 19 month old that still has to ride in a car seat in the back.
Doors left side (both) latch failure-front and rear door will not stay closed-tech found latch is internally faulted stationary-doors would not latch, entering vehicle
The driver's side door latch has failed and the door will not hold itself closed. when i attempt to lock the doors, it tries and immediately unlocks them. the latch mechanism itself can be pushed closed with your finger when the door is open however it doesn't actually stay closed. a spring forces it back open. the latch failed in the parking lot. when i got in to come home from work, the door would not latch closed. i thought maybe the seat belt or some other object got caught in it however that was not the case. in order to drive home, i had to hold the door closed as best as i could with one hand while attempting to steer and operate turn signals which is extraordinarily unsafe and distracting.
The rear driver's side door latch failed. this is the second latch that i have has failed on the car. the driver's side door latch failed in november 2015. i was pulling out of a parking spot (going in reverse) when the door open warning light came on. i had just put my dog in the car and closed the door. the door latch failed suddenly and the door will not close.
The driver door will no longer latch. the door will close completely but the latch does not engage to hold the door closed.
Driver door latch has failed. will not keep the door closed. same problem as ford fusion and ford fiesta. please make ford add the focus for a door latch recall. car was stationary when defect occurred. went to closed the door and it would latch.
Driver side door will not stay closed. worked fine then would not latch close. the door now will swing open unless held in place.
The door latch on my rear passenger door failed and the door flew open while the car was in motion. when i turned right out of my complex was when it opened. ford issued a recall on vehicles including 2012 ford focuses regarding this issue but did not include vehicles bought and registered in the state of tennessee, where i live. i believe that because my car has demonstrated the problem that the recall addresses, they should be fixing it for free as part of the recall. i just had to pay $226.00 for the part to fix my door, and the part was on back order for a month.
My drivers side latch failed on me one day, while i was driving and an alarm went off saying the door was open. i made a right hand turn, when my door began to swing open. luckily, i was at a complete stop before turning. my car had about 70,000 miles on it, when the incident ocurred. i took it to a mechanic and they said the latch rod was broken and had to be replaced. they told me to go to ford and see if there was a recall on it. went to the ford dealership and they said there wasn't a safety issue recall and it would cost $500 to repair it. i don't understand how that's not a safety issue, when now i have to tie a bungee cord to keep it somewhat closed.
Driver's side back door opened while vehicle was being driven. spring forcing latch to secure is evidently broken. vehicle was going straight at approximately 30 mph.
With 65300 miles on my vehicle, the drivers door latch failed. the door will not latch .i must secure the door with a bungee cord. my dealer informed me that my vehicle vin is not part of any recall and that the repair of the single door is $600. no accommodation of any kind was offered.
As i started my drive to work on 7/13/16 on my county road and my indicator light came on and said passenger door open. i exited my vehicle to find my rear driver side door open and would not close. this is not the only time this has happened, i had to replace the latch on the rear passenger side less than a year ago. this is a major safety concern for me and my family but also puts a burden on my financial situation, considering i cannot drive my car to work until this problem is fixed.
When i approached my vehicle parked in a private parking lot i noticed the driver door was ajar. i tried to shut it multiple times with no success. i ended up manually holding the door closed, which was very unsafe, and took my vehicle to the nearest ford service center for repairs. i was eventually determined that it was a faulty door latch that was extremely expensive to have replaced. ugh!
The rear drivers side door latch has a broken spring and will not latch at all! my son went out to the car to leave and put my grandson in the back seat and tried to close the door and it wouldn't latch. he called for someone to pick up the 3 year old then used his belt to tie the door shut and took it bill utter ford. ford has informed us the part is not covered and it is on a major back order with no estimated date of availability. they are not willing to give us a loaner car until part comes in. the focus is not safe to drive with a broken door latch! this car has 70,000 miles and was a certified preowned when we bought it.
My son's 2012 ford focus left rear door flung open on its own while driving on the freeway. thankful no one was injured, and when he pulled to the shoulder he realized that he could not get the to engage to close or lock. he struggled with it for a few minutes, and realized it was useless. he then had to drive home holding rear door closed while trying to safely drive the car. ford needs to recall the door latches on these vehicles. drivers risk death and injury.
Driver side door came open while car was in motion, being driven on a city street. driver side door will not stay closed. door latch has failed.
I have now an issue with my passenger door that will not close. i opened my door and went to close it and it popped back open. would not latch to close. as a result i had to tie the door closed. my car was in a parked position and i was placing items on the back seat. i was ablebto open the door but as i attempted to close the door would not engage or latch just popped open.
Car door won't latch. swung open at random and will not stay closed. occurred in motion, backing out of my driveway. similar recall for different ford vehicles but not the ford focus 2012.
The passenger rear driverside door won't close. there was no event that happened to cause this issue, it just stopped functioning all on it's own and just like my 1st report on this same vehicle last month regarding the front passenger door doing the exact same thing and ford motor company knew this problem existed 2-3 years ago and cunsumers were never notified of this potential danger of the doors coming open w/o warning and malfunctioning. does someone have to get seriously hurt, or worst, die b4 ford is forced to recall these effected vehicles for repair? as a consumer, i want to know why ford isn't forced to take care of this problem? as of now i have 2 doors that won't close so they can't be locked and i have no garage to put the vehicle in, so it's very volnerable to theft if it's noticed these doors are not closed and if it rains, the vehicle will recieve water damage on th enterior. so, how long now b4 another door stops working in this same manner. i was preparing the vehicle 07/09/16 for taking it on 07/11/16 to another repair facility than ford to get an estimate on fixing the 1st door reported on last month to you, in hopes tat it would be a lot cheaper than $600, but now that 2 doors are faulty, it's no way i can afford doing that and as i thought about it, this was ford was hoping people would do probably, i'm not in their heads or meetings. this is their design issue (flaw), they need to fix this, or take this vehicle back and return all our money invested in this vehicle including down payment and monthly payments, which are all on time since day 1.
Driver rear door latch broken while driving. leaving a parking garage the rear door suddenly swings open nearly hitting a passing car. after pulling over to close the door it is apparent the door latch is broken and will not latch at all. i have a short video showing the failure of the door to latch if needed.
My rear passenger side door will not latch close.
Driver's door latch failure while stationary. occured at 1315 on 8 july 2016. unlocked vehicle and entered to drive home. noticed door did not latch when pulled shut and freely opens. was forced to tie a strap around front and back doors through open windows to get home. without presure holding door closed, the door ajar warning sounds. unable to safely lock vehicle overnight to prevent vandalism. seems like it should be covered by nhtsa campaign number: 15v246000. called local ford dealer and was told it's not covered by any recall and that they would have to inspect first before giving more info. since it is extremely inconvenient to get the car dropped off i haven't been able to followup today. please contact me for more info.
Door latch failure during driving. i was driving the car, took a right turn and out of nowhere the driver's door came unlatched and opened. i was able to get the car home by holding the door shut and driving basically with 1 hand. after arriving at home, it became evident through multiple attempts to close and latch the door that the latch was malfunctioning. this problem is not only dangerous, it is also leaves my car more vulnerable for thief. though research of recalls i am aware this is currently under investigation. we were in motion on a 4 lane road in a rural area and turning. this happened on july 8th, 2016
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 60 mph, the driver side door swung open independently and the door ajar warning light illuminated. the failure occurred constantly. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 130,000.
The front driver's side door latch stopped closing. the part itself no longer closes around the pin causing the door not to shut or lock. unless physically restrained, the door will swing open while driving causing several potential safety hazards. thankfully it did not break while i was moving. i drove home from work, parked, and then left to go run errands, but when i went out to run errands the door did not close anymore. upon visual inspection and comparison to the passenger side i noticed a small plastic piece that appeared to be broken off on the front of the latch.
In april 2016, the drivers side door latch quit working after i attempted to shut it to go home from work. i was no longer able to shut the door and had to tie it shut to drive it. i had it repaired at a ford dealership for just under 600$. today, 07 july 2016, my passenger side door latch quit working while i was vacuuming the car. i went to leave and the "door ajar" indicator came on. i attempted to shut it and it would not shut. i called ford and they said that because it isn't recalled they won't fix it.
My driver side latch has failed. my car door won't close properly on its own.
Driver side door flew open when i made a right hand turn on a city street. door will not close now. defective latch. door bounces open when i try to close it. i researched issue and ford has done recalls for other models but not the focus. dealer said it would be $500 to fix.
My vehicle had a door malfunction that wouldn't allow proper closure. as this was "after hours" for a typical dealership, i had to leave by car door ajar until we were able to get it into a service station. once i did, i learned that this was an incredibly common malfunction and was advised that i shouldn't lean from the inside on any of my doors, including the driver door. i plead with ford (both dealership and ford corporate) to replace the necessary parts on all 4 of these defective doors, as this is a factory malfunction; well documented by thousands of ford owners, and was told that it wasn't recalled so i'd have to settle for $600 per door in order to have this problem fixed. i, unable to afford $2400 in charges, now i have to hope that my car doesn't open while i am driving it. which will only cause severe damage to any vehicle or persons around me if issue causes accident. i also will not be able to put my children in the car, or seated near passenger door, or back seat door that was not fixed - as they could have this situation happen. while always buckled, there is no guarantee that this horrifying factory defect won't cause harm while vehicle is in motion. at this point. i would hope that this issue only assists in getting a factory recall from ford and for reimbursement of the $600 charge; before any further accidents. not only for my children's sake, for my sake, or the numerous customers of these defective vehicles; but also for the sake of every driver and passenger on the road near an afflicted ford vehicle. i plead for help in getting this fixed. please.
Rear passenger door latch stopped latching door bounces shut and open again not closing properly. i had to secure it with a cord anchored to another part of the car interior to drive home. i already had this same issue with the driver rear door latch. the check door light comes no and of as driving while the door is tied shut.
Got into my focus as i normally do. went to pull the door shut and it did not latch. will not latch whether locked or unlocked. glad it didn't fly open like i've read this happening to other people. also glad it did not bounce back and hit my neighbors car. very upsetting to read ford has had this problem in over a half million of their vehicles.
This is the second/same issue with this vehicles door latching system. first was in oct 2015, ref #10784961-driver side rear door. this time spouse was driving out of our neighborhood on the city street, car was in motion approximately 10 mph. she made a right hand turn and the driver door swung open. she stopped and pulled the door closed but it would not latch closed. she returned home and i found that the drive door latching system was not engaging. i am using a small rope attached to the interior door panel handle to keep the door closed when not occupied. i am unable to lock/secure my vehicle and the interior/exterior lights remain on when the door is not pulled closed with the small rope attached to the interior door panel handle on one end and the emergency brake on the other end. no injuries during incident.
Passenger side rear door opened while driving on a city street and will not re latch. appears to be an issue with this vehicle with others reporting similar issues.
I have had *2* of my door latches fail. driver door, and driver-side passenger door. i have had the driver door latch replaced (april 21st, 2016) and the 2nd latch just failed but not yet replaced (july 2nd, 2016). the first replacement cost me $381.47, and none of it was covered by ford as it is not part of a recall.
Driver side rear door latch stopped working. door won't stay closed, have to use tow straps to keep door closed or it will fly open while driving. vehicle was stationary.
The driver door latch fails to catch when closing the door, even when attempting to lock the door. as a result, the door does not secure and swings open while driving, particularly when turning to the right, and does not lock to secure interior and contents. the failure was first discovered while driving. as we turned right at an intersection, after having come to a complete stop, the driver's door flew open, almost striking a car driving in the opposite direct on the street we turned onto, narrowly avoiding an accident.
Our vin number is not covered under the current recall. while driving our rear passenger door popped open and will not stay closed. we had to bungee cord closed it for a month and a half until the back ordered part came in. now we are paint $800 to have it fixed.
Door latch assembly driver side rear door and front passenger door had to be replaced, stop working for no know reason
Without warning the driver door flew open as car was pulling onto feeder street and would no longer latch after this event. when researching blogs found others who had similar events. nearby dealer confirmed latch would not operate and was broken. mechanic stated that this had been seen repeatedly on other ford models but not often on focus model. was told by dealer that other models have recalls listed to replace all door latches.this could have been a major safety issue including possible ejection from the vehicle.
Driver side door swung open amidst driving down a residential street
