BODY 277

Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2012 Ford Focus

Door latch on both front and rear doors fails to operate. doors cannot close.

On two separate occasions the door latches (rear passenger and rear driver side) on the vehicle became stuck open/locked. one occurrence resulted in the passenger rear door fully opening while making a right turn the other incident (8/24/2016) involved not being able to close the rear driver side door, latch was stuck in the lock position and would not allow for full closure.

Driver side rear door latch failed while pulling out of my driveway. the left rear door open light illuminated and the door swung open. tried to close door but the door will not latch close leaving vehicle non operable. ford says my vin is not covered in the attached recall notice, although it meets all criteria of notice. also local ford dealer was not able procure new part because of availability. customer service just said they were sorry. i now have an inoperable vehicle and by every indication it should be covered under this warranty. other wise it will cost me over $400.00 to have this fixed if they ever are able to get the part.

My door latch stopped working on my front driver's side door, seemingly out of nowhere. i noticed the issue when i had parked at work and the door was not staying shut after locking it.

Today i was going home from work and my door opened and closed way too fast but i thought nothing of it so i just kept driving. as i drove off the door swings open on me. well i stopped to take a look at all of my doors and then the back drivers door jammed on me and wouldn't close. so i tied a rope to the door to hold it tight and i held the font drivers door as i drove home for 1 hour! i managed to unjam the back door but my car is unable to close in the front so now i have to worry about a dead battery in the morning. when i called ford they told me i have to pay out of pocket because there is no recall for my car when i have seen this complaint for over 400,000 ford focus cars! i live in florida how am i suppose to get to work in this heat? how am i to trust ford if they wont even help me. i need answers my car in unsafe right now

Takata recall the door latch on the driver side unexpectedly stop latching shut. was parking the car in a parking lot and went to close the door and it would not lock or close. the door does not close and when attempting to close the door it bounces back and does not latch shut. had hold the door shut in order to drive home. researched ford for recalls and found that the 2012 ford fiesta and the 2012 ford fusion were recalled with the same problem.

As i was driving my 2012 ford focus the door all of sudden the driver rear side door opened. i pulled over and tried to shut the door but it just bounced back open. this is a big safety hazard and i'm not quite sure why i should to pay for the repair as this vehicle is not that old for this to be happening and i've also heard a lot of complaints from other consumers having the same issue. good thing no one was in the back of the vehicle when this occurred or the results would have been devastating. i'm hoping there will be a recall for the door latch soon.

The door latch is broken, and the door will no longer close properly. when exiting the vehicle, we noticed the door would no longer close.

The door latch assembly failed on the driver door, where the latch pawl and spring have broken, identical to the issue with the ford fiesta & ford fusion recalls. having worked at ford, i know the fiesta & fusion are near identical platforms that in the mindset of commonality of similar parts or the global world car strategy espoused by ford for nearly a decade now, such a device would in all likelihood use the exact same latch pall and spring in all three platforms/vehicle make. the incident luckily occurred while stationary, but while shopping on 8/17/2016 and the door will not latch or lock. my wife proceeded to hold the door closed for the 7 mile return trip home through afternoon rush hour traffic, she is less than thrilled. being this is a direct safety issue, need guidance in how to force ford to correct their obvious responsibility on the issue as frankly no car oem should be held guiltless for such a safety device failure within 5 years of manufacture. supposedly there is a recall potentially expanded to include the ford focus coming soon, but i need to do so now as the cost of the assembly and labor will likely approach $600 or more as the assembly oem cost to retail is over $300 alone.

The front driver's side door latch will not engage. the latch mechanism itself will not stay in the closed position.

The driver side door latch would not latch. i have read that this is a common failure not only in the focus but in many other ford models many of which have already been recalled. the car was luckily stationary when the failure occurred.

Door fails to latch and opens while in motion.

The driver's side rear door will not latch. the latch looks broken compared to the other rear door latch, but unknown specifically what part is broken. the door latch broke when parked in our driveway. my husband opened the door to get something out of the back and when he closed it, it bounced back slightly and would not close. no injuries as a result of the latch breaking. ford says (in a call on 8/16/16) our vin is not a part of the recall and will not tell us if the latch on our car is the same part installed on vehicles that are a part of the recall. our ford service dealer is backordered on the part and will not have it available until aug 31st, and ford will not pay for the fix, which is estimated at $500-$600.

Was driving down the street when the drivers door came open and would not shut or latch.

My wife was backing out of our driveway and beginning to pull off and the driver door just flew open. the latch will not secure the door. she could have been seriously injured. my local ford dealer is hub city ford in crestview fl. and they said i have to pay for the repair.

I am an owner of a 2012 ford focus. the driver door latch suddenly gave out and will not securely shut. the door will close, but will flap open. this is extremely dangerous and expensive fix. you can see how this is frustrating when the latch gave out on its own. thankfully, not while i was driving. please keep investigating this issue for it should be an issued recall. this is a must to keep all focus owners safe and secure while driving. thanks.

Driver door latch failed while driving on highway, slightly turning right to change lanes. diver door opened, and latch would not re-engage. door had to be held shut until it could be safely parked, then tied shut from inside to travel to dealership.

Door latch recall my vehicle's driver side door swung open while making a right hand turn on a busy highway street and would not latch back when attempted to close. i took the car into the dealership to be repaired. the same day i researched and found a recall that went into affect on 8/4/16 that describes exactly what happened to me and covers the exact criteria of the recall to include, make, model, year of manufacture and location it was manufactured. the dealership advised there was no active recall for my vehicle so i escalated to the manufacture. after speaking with multiple ford customer case associates they opened a case advising me that it appears my car is eligible for the recall but because the recall was so new that none of the consumers vin numbers have been tied to the recall, therefore, they could not assist me. the dealership is advising me that i need to pay for this recall work and when they eventually add my vin tot he recall that they would reimburse me for the repair. i do not feel as though i should pay for this repair out of pocket due to the known recall that exists. ford was unable to assist me with the recall repair and the vehicle is still sitting at the ford dealership awaiting repair.

My car's steering wheel got stuck with a notice saying "power steering assist fault". the first time the problem occurred the car was backing up, and the problem went away when i parked and restarted the car. the second time the problem stayed... the cost to fix the problem was estimated at about $2000 (parts and labor) at the dealership. the mileage was around 60,000 at the time. last week (08/12/2016, at about 72,000 miles), a warning came on about a door being open while i was parking. it was the one at the back on the driver's side. the door would not lock, so i tied it with a seatbelt to keep driving. since then the car goes into panic mode now and then when i leave it locked, probably because the door moves and it feels like someone mechanically forced the latch open. i somehow feel lucky that none of the problems occurred while driving in traffic, but i am now concerned about something else failing (like a door flying open) in worse conditions.

This is the 3rd time that this vehicle had a door latch failure. the right rear door open due to a defect in the door latch & this time the door hit a support column in a parking garage at the mall & damage the door. i filled a complaint twice on this vehicle here. now i need to order a new latch for this door so that it can be secured. the car is parked again waiting for the part & then it will have to go to body shop to fix the damage to the door. something needs to be done to address this problem with the door latches on these cars. i know that ford has recall's for other vehicles with door latch problems. i am sure that the door latches on this vehicle is more then likely made to the same spec as the one's with the recall's or made by the same company. i see on the net that there are a lot of people that have the same problem with there ford focus like i am having.lucky for me that i can change the door latch since this is what i do for a living which is some 43 year's in the business. even at that it still cost a lot of money for the part & the time it takes to get.the first door latch cost me $239.17, the second one was $206.26 with the discount that i get. other people are paying as much as $600.00 a door to get fixed at the dealers. if this door hit a support column this time maybe next time it can hit a person which could result in a serious injury. if you need to get in touch call at [xxx] or e-mail me at [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My drivers side door opened while being operated and would not latch shut. i tried several times to shut it and it would not stay shut. i had to finish my drive to work holding the door shut. im glad it was a door that i could hold shut because had it been any of the other doors, there could have been a collision. i had to have the door repaired myself since it is not under warrantee. i understand that other models were recalled and mine wasn't because a different company made the spring which is apparently what failed. im sure that both companies made the spring to the same specifications and that the fault is in the design not the company that makes the springs.

Rear driver side door not latching. opened it to get personal stuff out and went to close it and the door just bounced back. looked at the latch and it doesn't stay up.

While driving on the freeway the rear driving door flew open. car to the left of us had to swerve to avoid taking the door off. my daughter was sitting next to the door. and was trying to hold the door closed until i could pull over safely. this is is extremely dangerous to have to this happen to anyone!! took it to ford and they said yes they are backed up with cars with same problem. what the heck?! and these are the same latches recalled in other vehicles!!

The door lock latch/actuator broke not allowing the door to shut and latch. this is the same problem many models of ford vehicles have had and been recalled. but the recalled models don't cover all models affected with this defective latch. vehicle was stationary fortunately.

Front driver side door would not latch properly, allowing the door to swing open while driving. i noticed this driving out of the parking lot at work. extremely dangerous and could have caused damage to my vehicle and others on the road. vehicle is unsafe to drive, and ford has issued a recall for this issue (https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2016/08/04/regional-safety-recall.html) but my vin isn't one of the affected numbers.

Door latch...specifically drivers side rear door.....failed to latch and still will not latch. came out from my work location and opened door, placed lunch box in back seat, shut door(i thought), got in and started car and warning system advised rear door not shut. got out and tried to shut door but would not latch any more. had to tie door with string to keep it from flying open going down the road.

Making a right handed turn into a parking lot and the driver side door came open. after getting stopped and trying to close the door i noticed that it would not stay shut. the door has to be held shut when driving, only was to get it to stay closed is to drive down the road so the auto locking turns on and open and close it several times for the door lock to catch it. talked to the dealership in ennis, tx on 08/09/2016 (9days ago as of this writing) and they refused to fix it unless i paid "around $600" for it. tom, the guy i talked to said that there was a recall on these cars but my vin fell out of the range and ever though it was the exact same car with the exact same problems the recall was issued for since my vin had not been listed they were not going to take a proactive approach. last thing he stated was that since i had a extended warranty that they may fix it under that. how ever after dealing with ford on a horn issue i know that anything not exactly listed under the warranty does not fall under its protection. before we got off the phone he said that he (tom) would looking into it and get back to me. over a week ago and counting.

This is the second time it happens to my ford focus 2012 hatchback. first it was the back door at the drivers side, the second one was the driver door. i get out of the car and when pressed the key fob the horn sound twice. go back to check if i let a door open, and the door would not close. call the dealer and they told me that they know they have problem with the door latches but they could not do anything because ford did not have a recall for my car.

As of august 7, 2016 the driver side door latch fails to latch in the closed position. malfunction was discovered when i returned to the parked vehicle at the grocery store. prior to this there was no indication that the latch function was failing. obviously this malfunction is a serious safety and theft concern.

My family and i were preparing to drive from our home when my daughter told me the rear door would not close. after researching on the internet, i find that this is a common issue with some models of ford cars. i took my car to a ford dealership but have been told that although it is in fact the same defective part described in a recall, my vehicles's vin number is not included as a recall. my door will not stay closed and i can't risk transporting my children as a result. ford says it will cost me five hundred dollars to repair the part that has already been deemed unsafe and is being fixed at no charge in other vehicles because they have different vin numbers.

I was parked in a parking lot. i got out to look for something in the back seat. i found what i was looking for, closed the driver's side passenger door and got back in the driver's seat. as i was backing out to leave, the back door that i had opened flew open and the warning light that a door was ajar came on. i could not get the door to stay closed. i had to tie it to something in the back seat with plastic bags which was the only thing i had. i took it to my dealer and was told that the door latch was on "back order" and it would not be available until september 2016 and would cost me $400 to fix because the vehicle had not been issued a recall....yet. so i have to figure a way to keep the door closed, not secured, until they can get the part in.

Drivers door opened during a turn. door would no longer latch closed. this car was in dallas tx till about 3 months ago. i am the original owner.

The door will not latch closed. the driver's side door immediately swung open when i attempted to drive the vehicle. i was unable to ever close it again after that. it just leans in place, but it never latches.

Drivers side door latch broke and door does not remain closed/latched while car is in motion or sitting still. cannot secure my car nor can i safely operate my car since the door will not close. this is the second door latch that is defective in my vehicle. now both driver's side doors will not remain closed. front and rear door latches are defective.

The driver's door latch has failed and will not close the door anymore. dealer says the recall does not apply to 2012 ford focus

Faulty door latch. ford will not honor its own recall notice published in news papers throughout us. cost for replace is over $500. door latches have failed while driving. my latch failed while in park, but door would not close. from abc news article "ford is recalling about 830,000 vehicles in the u.s. and mexico because parts in the side door latches can break and the doors can open while the vehicles are moving. the recall announced thursday covers certain 2013 to 2015 ford escape suvs and c-max cars, and 2012 to 2015 focus cars. also included are 2014 to 2016 ford transit connect vans, and ford mustang sports cars and lincoln mkc suvs from 2015." ford says a faulty spring part can break, stopping the doors from latching. the company says the rate of problems is higher in states with high temperatures and sunlight exposure, so the recall is focused on all of mexico and 16 states mainly in the south and west. states included are alabama, arkansas, arizona, california, florida, georgia, hawaii, louisiana, mississippi, new mexico, nevada, oklahoma, texas, utah, oregon and washington. dealers will replace all latches in the recall states and mexico. in other states they will replace the latches if they break. the company says it knows of one crash and one injury that could have been caused by the problem. the recall will cost ford about $270 million, and that figure will be included in the company's third-quarter pretax results, ford said in a filing with the securities and exchange commission. door latches have been problematic for ford during the past two years. in may of 2015 the company had to recall 692,000 small and midsize cars for a similar latch problem. at the time, the u.s. national highway traffic safety administration warned owners of the cars to get them repaired as soon as they get a notice from ford."

Driving on the freeway my driver door just flew open. now it won't shut unless i lock the door first in the slot in the door jam then close it. there is a recall on the same year on the fiesta, fusion, and lincoln mkz. this needs to be addressed as this is a safety issue, lucky i had my seat belt on like you should always but the door could have hit another car and cause an accident. i am lucky that didn't happen....

When i went out one day to leave work the back driver side passenger door latch no longer worked after i opened the car. i can't drive the car at all without the door flying open. i tried to secure it but the weight of the door breaks all strings/ropes. i resorted to a bungee cord. when i take turns the door still opens but closes shut. i have a baby that sits in the back seat so i was scared and took it into the dealership. they are telling me since its not an active recall yet that they will only repair it for a discounted rate of $350 but the part is on back order. i told them this was unacceptable as i have a baby in the backseat and it's a huge safety issue. interesting enough, at first when the rep. thought it was covered under a warranty, he told me he could not release my vehicle to me because it was a safety hazard. now that they might not pay for it, it's ok to be released. very disappointed in ford. i am still waiting to hear back if they will pay for it but again, the part isn't in yet either. i am also not able to secure my car anymore because with one door always open the doors will lock but the alarm doesn't work.

The door of my 2012 ford focus flew open while driving and will not latch to close.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the rear passenger side door failed to close. the contact mentioned that the door had to be tied in order to remain secured. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 46,000. ...updated 09/12/16 *bf *tr

While driving my vehicle on 08/03/2016 at approx. 8pm, my driver's side front door opened. at the same time, the dome light came on, and a warning appeared on my instrument panel. i managed to pull the door closed. after pulling over and stopping, i repeatedly attempted to close the door. it would not latch. this leaves my car undrivable and unsecured (even when my vehicle is locked, the front driver door does not lock, as it will not latch).

On august 2nd, 2016, the back door latch on the driver side failed, and it will no longer hold the door closed. i had opened my back door to put my backpack in the backseat, and when i closed the door, it closed completely, but would not latch and hold the door shut. i now have a ratchet strap going from back door to back door, holding my door closed.it was stationary at the time. i didn't think too much about it beyond i needed to get it fixed, until i went to the ford dealer to order a replacement part. i was told by the parts associate that the latch i needed was on back order. after a little research i found that ford has recalls on the same model year fusion and fiesta for this same failure, and there are some complaints surfacing about the focus. side note: 2 weeks later, i am still waiting on the replacement door latch mechanism. it really makes me think that ford used the same part in the fiesta, focus and fusion models.

Door latches bad on car have had two occacions where they go faulty, first time was a couple of years ago both the drivers door latch went bad, the car was not in motion when i found out, and i was under the warranty to fix the problem so i never complained. the second time i was driving with my dog in the back seat and the door swings open, i was very shocked from the situation because my dog nearly feel out, my first thought was it was my fault i did not close the door, but when i went to shut the door in the back the latch would not close, i knew at this point what was going on because of my first experience. this time i was no longer under warranty and had to pay over 500 dollars to fix. that was the second time this happens to me and ive heard other people that own ford focus cars that they have experienced similar problems. on both drivers door. seems like fraud if you ask me

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the driver side door opened independently and failed to secure. the contact coasted to the side of the road then was able to resume driving by holding the door handle of the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.

The back door latch does not close and the door opened in on its own now will not stay shut safety big time i could have been on the freeway driving with someone sitting in the back seat now i have to pay 430 to ford to fix something that is a major problem and safety concern

The rear door latch will not latch. the door just suddenly flew open while i was driving and now will not latch shut. i was on a city street when it happened.

While driving my focus and making a right turn my driver door opened in mid turn and flew open. i had to pull over on the highway since i tried to close the door and it would not close. after looking at the door the locking mech would not go back up it stayed down.

The driver's side rear passenger door will not close. i have to use a piece of wire to hold the door closed so that it will not fly open while i am driving. i noticed the door did not close when i tried to set the alarm. the car had been stationary for about two hours. a customer representative from ford motor company told me that my ford focus was not listed in a previous recall. this does not make sense to me. why should i have to pay for something that was the fault of the manufacturer?

My drivers side rear doors latch broke/malfunctioned leading to my rear door swinging open freely while i was driving, my daughter was in the back seat. the door it's self will now no longer stay closed. it appears the plastic/rubber latch was possibly warped from the heat.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 45 mph, the front driver side door flew open. the contact was unable to securely lock the door. the contact drove home while holding the door. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 85,900.
