Problems with 2012 Ford Focus UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2012 Ford Focus starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 78 178 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2012 Ford Focus

For the third time in six months, my car will not start. it was fortunately parked in my garage. there is power. the onboard computer has erased itself each time. each time, i've been told its a transmission problem, and that its covered by warranty. it's gotten to the point where i don't even trust my car to drive it anymore.

Takata inflators: this vehicle in the "drive gear" lunges when gas is pressed and quickly takes off at the slightest press of gas making for a dangerous take off from stop lights and traffic signs while on major roadways. this vehicle when placed in the "park gear" jerks when placed in park and feels as if it will roll backwards while in parking lots or home driveway. the vehicle has been reported multiple times to ford dealer for assessment and/or repair as "shaking" and "shimmies" while driving, to prevent this feeling, the emergency brake is used often. once, the vehicle actually rolled backwards in the the "drive" gear but was identified as a defect and repaired by a ford dealer. when placed in "drive" at that time it was showing on the dash as in "park". this too was corrected by ford dealer by replacing tcm. although repairs have been made to this vehicle since purchase, it continues to often shake and shimmy appearing to continue to have issues. as owner, i was not notified of the latest recall part prior to my warranty expiring which may have further resolved some of the lingering issues. tcm has been replaced, the clutch replaced more than once,or tcm reprogrammed during multiple visits to the ford dealer.

The left hand back door latch broke. the door will not latch and my wife is keeping the door closed with the seat belt. the car was in a parking lot and when my daughter got in the door would not latch.

On 10/15/15 my car stalled and completely pulled back , died down to almost a halt then kicked into gear again , like a pull and let go motion. out of nowhere, this gave me a scare since i was driving and could have been rear ended because of this complete stall in the middle of the road on n.e. 163rd street north miami beach towards biscayne blvd. engine light went on and a screen message showed up asking me to service transmission now! i have had to park car until i figure what to do? this car has turned out to be a problem for me, first with the back driver side door latch where door just flew open while driving, (that's a different claim i have placed with nhtsa). i can't afford to keep fixing these problems appearing to this ford focus. radio also went dead with a super loud disrupting pop sound and loud static electrical noises which could not be controlled by lowering volume or turning off radio , this loud pop sound startled me also while driving on turnpike from davie towards north miami beach. would like to get ford motor to recognize that my ford focus 2012 is a lemon, if not the right term then it's a product of shoddy parts used to construct this car.

While pulling out of a drive thur my car suddenly became very hard to turn and a message appeared on the dash stating "steering assist malfunction". i was able to turn off the car and restart and the problem seemed to be okay. now i am worried that this will happen again but in a more dangerous situation. there are many other complaints i have read about and it's not if it happens again it's when. also tonight i experienced my rear right side door is not able to close at all. which i have read numerous complaints about both of these safety concerns. that is a huge safety hazard, i am very thankful that i realized this before driving away with my daughter in the back seat. i will never buy another ford again!!!!

Driver door latch would not latch door closed.

While driving 65 mph on a large highway my 2012 ford focus turned it self off. the accelerator became unresponsive and the car lost speed quickly. driving in the left lane allowed me to careen off onto the median without injury or accident. the car was unable to restart and was towed to the nearest ford dealer. this is the second incident in which this car has exhibited a loss of power and shut off while driving. an authorized ford dealer alleged to fix the issue the first time and a service notice had been recently issued. according to the service dealer the service notice may not be a factor in this dangerous situation.

The driver's side door will not remain closed. the latch won't engage.

The passenger side rear door opened while driving in a parking lot. it will not latch shut again. ford has a number of recalls on other models but refuses to recall the focus despite numerous complaints.

Driver door latch failed preventing door from latching closed. door could open while vehicle in motion

Takata recall. i have a 2012 ford focus that i bought about 2 years ago from someone on craigslist. it's my first car and has been the most amazing first car i could've asked for, when i first purchased it i had gotten a letter in the mail regarding my ford and it told me to bring it into ford because there was a recall on my transmission. so i brought it in to capistrano ford turtle click, they told me to come back after the 4 day weekend because i probably didn't want my car sitting in the shop all weekend for such a minor problem. so i asked if my car was going to be fine for me to still drive in or should i just let it be until they could work on it. the man told me that my car would be fine and just bring it in after the weekend. i also called as soon as i was leaving the dealership and made an appt and also got it verified that my car would be fine to drive in until my appt. funny thing the next day my gf and i we're driving and i stopped at a red light and it turned green went to hit the gas and my car just died. didn't even feel like it turned off or anything and then it showed my car was not registering that it was in drive. so i call ford and they had me tow the car to them and they said there had been a recall on the transmission something and they fixed it for me. so she was running so good and about 8 months down the line the same kind of problem with my transmission is happening except now i get in my car and will go to turn the key and it won't turn over, i have to let it ding 4 times and then it'll start. very odd? i then will start driving and when it goes to shift into second gear it does a gnarly stall and it's almost like it can't catch the gears and it's been telling me "transmission too hot pull over safely" and then it just pulls itself out of gear and i kinda just coast into a spot. so i told ford about it all and now they can't fix my car beca

The car sat for about 2 hours in my driveway and when i went to start it back up, it wouldn't start. lights came on, but the engine would not turn over. upon further research, it looks as if it is a problem with the key fob programming, and not the alternator like people have been trying to say. this car is only 3 years old. it should not be having alternator issues. i've also seen many other cases of this same issue in this same model.

My wife and child were at a red light and when the light turned green and the gas pedal was pressed, the vehicle did not move only revved causing the man behind her to inch very close behind due to the light then honking his horn and yelling. in addition, after my wife and child returned home, i went to run to the store only to find that the vehicle does not turn over, not even sound like its attempting to as there is no noise when turning the key. i believe the vehicle does not recognize what gear it is in, thus will not start and has always had erratic shifting and lurching tendencies. i do not know what to do now, i have a family of five i support and no money to fix this. how am i going to get to work!!! i still have 5 years to pay on this...ughhh. trapped

When we were pulling out of driveway my fiance was sitting in front passenger seat. the door opened by itself and fell out. no injury. upon investigation, the door would not latch. when taken to ford, it was not under warranty and the cost was 502.00

Discovered drivers side door will not close, stay shut, latch, or lock properly. door may be pulled or pushed open when parked or at any speed and latching mechanism will not keep door in place. this is a highly concerning safety issue as this resulted in recalls for the explorer, 2011-2014 fiesta, 2013-2014 fusion, and 2013-2014 mkz with the same exact mechanism.

My car started stalling while i was driving it back from work yesterday. it happened quite a few times on my 1 hour and 15 minute drive home. i would have to push the accelerator quite hard to get it to move. i have an appointment scheduled for tuesday at the dealer to get it checked out, but this is very concerning for me. there was also one isolated incident last week where i had it on drive and pressed the accelerator and it would not move. i kept pressing it and it started to drive after about 30 seconds.

The driver side door latch would not engage. door can swing open and shut while driving.

I was driving to an early morning meeting (5:30am) when the driver side door suddenly opened without warning. once the door opened, it would no longer latch. the car door had to be manually held firmly closed for the duration of the trip. with every turn, the door would attempt to fly open.

Driverside front door locking mechanism fail to secure door as it couldn't be lock adding a safety hazard with only 37,000 + miles is unheard off this to happened on a car at this mileage.

My 2012 ford focus takes a dangerously slow amount of time to accelerate on the highway and shudders excessively and very visibly (at any speed) when trying to accelerate. this car is a safety concern. just this week it is not starting at all. i received a letter from ford that there is a defect in the transmission in my car and they will replace it for free. i have read online that this doesn't fix the problem that others have continued to have these safety issues even after ford replaces their transmission or transmission clutch.

Rear passenger door will not latch.

I am the owner of a ford focus se 2012 with a faulty driver door latch please upgrade recall to include ford focus dearborn, michigan ford is recalling 389,585 2012-'14 ford fiesta and 2013-'14 ford fusion and lincoln mkz vehicles to fix faulty door latches, the automaker announced on friday "the door latch in these vehicles may experience a broken pawl spring tab, which typically results in a condition where the door will not latch," the company said in a statement. "if a customer is then able to latch the door, there is potential the door may unlatch while driving, increasing the risk of injury there are two minor injuries and one accident linked to the recall "ford is aware of two allegations of soreness resulting from an unlatched door bouncing back when the customer attempted to close it, and one accident allegation when an unlatched door swung open and struck an adjacent vehicle as the driver was pulling into a parking space," the company said in response to a thorough nhtsa investigation that demonstrated a clear risk to safety, ford is taking important action to protect its customers," said nhtsa administrator mark rosekind in a statement sent to edmunds. "we are pleased that ford is taking this proactive step for safety last month, nhtsa upgraded a probe into the 2011-'13 ford fiesta for door-latch problems ford identified the issue and we have been investigating it through our normal process," wrote ford spokeswoman kelli felker in response to a query from edmunds. "ford is working cooperatively with the agency and has discussed this recall with nhtsa ford dealers and lincoln dealers will replace all door latches. the recall begins on june 1. owners can contact ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or lincoln customer service at 1-800-521-4140 390,000 cars being recalled by ford to fix faulty door latches. | april 26, 2015 | ford motor company

Front driver side door will not consistently latch closed. car was parked when i first noticed the door was ajar. had to drive with the door immobilized by speaker wire and holding it with my hand until i had time to repeatedly close it in hope of it staying shut. after 45 minutes, it stayed shut until the few times i accidentally opened it without thinking which would result in similar adventures in getting it to close. speaking to the dealership, they knew exactly what part i needed without much explaining of the problem and i was told my extended warranty would not cover it.

Car jumps from 2000 rpm to 7000 rpm immediately when wanting to go from 35 mph to 45 mph after being sluggish and almost hit another vehicle. at highway speed of 65, the car's power becomes so low it only goes 40 mph and had to put hazard lights on and get off highway. automatic transmission but have to put foot on brake and other foot on gas in city traffic on hill or it slides back to almost hit vehicle behind me. steering got so tight multiple times at 45 mph and all lights on panel came on and car stalled in middle of a major intersection and had to call police to ensure nobody hit my vehicle and direct other traffic. car shudders and vibrates and nothing wrong with tires, rims, brakes and alignment.

The drivers door latch failed so that the door will not stay closed. i was lucky that it occurred in a parking lot rather than while driving.

Door latches faulty, as in regards to nhtsa action number pe16001. left front door latch failed, left rear door latch failed about two weeks later. vehicle was parked in both instances. doors would not close. had to tie shut to drive to dealer for replacement of latches. at time of second incident, service manager sent me an email stating that ford was now going to be replacing all door latches on this model when one failed. however, this was not done on my vehicle.

My car shuts off or stalls while driving, gas indicator is not accurate, i can smell fuel for a long time after i fill up, the transmission is not smooth at all, it jerks and shakes, wiper fluid is full but it won't release.

My wife was driving the vehicle on the freeway. she had opened and closed the sunroof about an hour before the incident. there was a loud popping/banging noise and the sunroof shattered. glass shards covered the inside of the car, some of them were sharp. when she parked the vehicle the glass was bent out and not down. there was no known impact of any object with the sunroof, it appears to have exploded due to a defect.

We believe this is a serious safety issue as one of our kids almost fell out of the car because we didn't realize the door did not catch! the rear left door will not stayed closed. the mechanism is not catching at all and the door is a safety issue. a couple of months ago, the passenger front door did the same thing. we ended up taking it to the dealership and it cost $100 to repair, but we don't feel this is right.

I bought a 2012 ford focus 2 years ago, since owning the car i have experienced major safety issues. doing 55mph in my home town my transmission failed and my car came to a dead stop. this has happened on multiple occasions. my check engine light came on as well as my hill side assistant. i was able to pull into a lot. after this incident and leaving my car off for 2 minutes or so, i began to drive and my rpm's jolted into the 7,000's and my car accelerated uncontrollably pushing my speed to over 50 when i was only doing 30. afterwards my vehicle once again de-accelorated in the middle of a busy road and came to a stop. i have brought my car back to ford 3 times in the last 2 years with issues due to accelerating, jerking, hesitation and fail to shift. this accident had almost costed me and others our lives. ford failed to assist me in the matter and told me there was nothing they could do about the way the ford's electric automatic transmission system is made. this car is a dangerous vehicle and by no means should be approved to be driven or sold under these circumstances. after further investigation i realized i'm one out of thousands who have had the same issues with ford focus' purchased between 2010-2013.

The vehicle would not turn over. there was no clicking of the vehicle trying to start. after 4 tries to start the car it was left to sit for 30 min before we tried again. the car then was tried to start again did not start until the 4th try. then the car started. it seems to be skipping a gear while driving will go from 6k rpm to all of the sudden jumping down to 2k rmp. there is something wrong with the clutch/ transmission with shifting and now something going on with the starting system.

Accelerating from a traffic light the car just died. i lost all power(power steering, power brakes). we pulled over and tried to jump the battery thinking it was this. i remembered a letter i received from ford regarding a voluntary recall for the transmission control module(tcm). the car was towed to my local mechanic and via a diagnostic test it was determined that the tcm was defective. after a week at the ford dealer the tcm was replaced free and the warranty was extended. the major concern that i have is if i was on the highway there would have been dire consequences - the car just died and we would have been sitting on the highway with traffic flying by us. there needs to be a mandatory recall for this situation before people die.

Rear door latch will no longer close correctly. even after closing will come open without use of handle.

The car seems to hesitate at acceleration from parked position. i noticed a slight "skipping" or jumping while driving off of the lot. since then, i have noticed the same while driving on the highway. the dealer (used car dealer in alabama) told me "its a good deal, good car"!!!

Back seat(drivers side) door latch failed on my husbands way home from work. the door flew open on a turn and all of his tools flew out the into the street. (he had my car because his ford transit was in the shop for the transmission issues) we had to tie the door with a bungee cord. the other back door latch (passenger side) flew open on the freeway while on the way to a birthday party resulting in a lost present and cake. now both back doors are tied so the doors don't fly open. i drive a canyon road to work and back everyday and going through a turn results in the door light coming on and makes the noise for when a door is open. we have tried going to ford numerous times and they acknowledge that other years have been recalled but not my year and model. ford has offered to "fix" the problem for a mere $700.00 dollars per door. i called corporate and received the same answer were sorry we know there is a problem but not for your year make and model. i now have a four door passenger car that only sits two people because the back doors are tied together. i pray everyday that my front drivers door and passenger door don't fly open. i have always owned a ford and never had a complaint about them but it is hard to believe that they do not care about their customers safety. what if my grandkids were in the back seat and the door flew open with them in the car? i will never own another ford this is a safety issue and big let down. please help to open a recall for this year make and model. 2102 ford focus

(automatic hatchback) the car rolls back when in gear, on a steep hill. shifting gears, it will hesitate on the highway and will jump gears and studder. a few days ago i was trying to back out of my driveway to get to work and when i put it in reverse, the car didn't move whatsoever, so i put it in drive to test and see if it was working, and it got in 1st gear just fine.so i tried to reverse again with the same issue. then the engine light illuminated, so i left the car and got a ride to work, however that night when i came home, i tested the car out again and same problem, however a message popped up "transmission is not in park (p)" and i had it in reverse, so i put it in drive and the same message popped up. now i cannot get it to move at all. while in drive, it will rev up, but it will not move! it will start up no problem, and sometimes it will drive, but it will lose power and not move again.

Cruise control won't engage. sometimes it will work but most the times it doesn't

Car just simply stopped moving while driving down the road. diagnostic light read transmission failure. car had to be coasted to the side of the road. luckily it was a rural road and there was little to no traffic or my child could have been seriously injured in a crash from being struck from behind. i understand that ford is aware of these problems. is it going to take someone or their child being hurt or killed to remedy the problem

This is the second time in 2 months that i've had problems with this car's transmission. not only does it stutter when shifting and take time to accelerate, but now the transmission is not working. in april, the car completely stopped accelerating, almost resulting in a crash on the highway. the dealership diagnosed it as a transmission censor and cost was paid out of pocket. this time, the car began jerking and the transmission light flashed. i drove the car home and because of the violent jerking almost wrecked on several occasions. i am taking it to the dealership for repairs today. considering this car is only 3 years old, it should not be having any of these problems and i consider it unreliable and a hazard to my family and other drivers on the road.

Vehicle leaks coolant after being parked in garage for no reason. noticed this problem when leaving and finding a huge puddle under car and drip spots from moving the car. when i opened the hood the cooling reservoir was empty.

Since 1 month after buying this car every time i stop driving and start driving it hesitates. sometimes when i stop it just keeps shaking. i never reported the issue because some people say it stops. it has been 1 year and 2 months and it has officially gotten worse. at times when i turn the car on it takes some time to start up. can some one help me please

I have a ford focus 2012 it has power lock on the doors. 3 doors lock with the remote just fine the door behind the drivers seat wont even close. it opens when i turn corners. this is a safety issues especially when i have small children, this car has had two recall fixes one with car rolling back even though it is an automatic and a transmission failure all due to electrical issues. i feel that the this is another one given that my passenger left rear door cant even be manually locked its only locked and unlocked electrically, there is nothing blocking the door to make it not close only the lock itself.

In 2015 after i started my car the power steering went out when coming out of the driveway at home. it use to come back on but comes off when car is parked then driven again . now there is no power steering. on march 28, 2016, my car started honking twice when i push the lock button while the car is running on park and driving on the city street.

Driver window worked only intermittently and then ceased altogether. had the switch replaced. now the passenger side front window is exhibiting the same early symptoms. it took only one week for the first window to fail, so it probably won't be long before we have to replace the second.

I have been to my ford dealership 10 times last year and 4 times already this year. i have multiple check engine light that came on and each time they replace a part on my car. i had my car last week for service and now it's back this week again for service. i have all my repair receipts and i am completely sadden that ford cannot do anything for me as i called the ford cooperate office and have their specialist looked at my case and i am having the same issues. my car shuts off on me so many times while driving with me 1 year old son in the middle of the street. they will fix it today and next week i am back in the shop. they have my car more times in the shop than i have on the road. i am extremely tired! i told them to test drive my car each time they "supposedly fixed" my issue and the problem remains the same. i have spoken to [xxx] at the cooperate office in florida ( 1866-631-3788) ex [xxx] and he has never solved my problems or return any of my calls. --at present writing this issue i am scheduled for another "repair". another check engine light situation. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Three of my 4 door latches stopped functioning completely. they did not work whether the car was stationary, in motion, driving, or turning. we had to tie the door handles to each other from the inside to keep them from flying open while driving. when you pushed them shut from the outside, they would bounce back open. this also caused constant warning lights/sounds from the dash. ford stated there was a recall, but ours were not covered because my 4 door latches were packaged as a 4 pack whereas the serial numbers for the recalled latches were sold in individual packaging. so therefore, i was not covered due to a loop hole. the doors not shutting properly (ever) caused water to leak in and cause other problems such as the window motor shorting out. i reached out to corporate and customer service and was told they would not pay for the repairs. i paid for the repairs out of pocket because i had to.

Shuttering transmission - brought in to ford to have serviced because there was an extended warranty offered but my car had already passed the milage limit. i had gone in previously complaining about the shutter and was informed it was because of the type of transmission it was. now that there is an actual problem with the transmission i now no longer quality for the extended warranty because it was not discovered until i passed 100,000 km

While towing this car behind my motorcoach four-tires down, per ford manual and current rv safety practices, the focus' passenger-side rear tire had a blow out. the tire came completely off of the rim. all four focus tires were checked two days before and pressures were at spec. with no sign of leaks or apparent damage. the tires are michelin defender tires with about 14,500 miles on them and purchased in april of 2014. this blow out was a complete surprise, for the tires were in apparently very good condition, i did not run over any road debris and i was traveling at 55 mph. i have photos of the blown out tire and will provide them upon request. thank you. *tr

Car lost power and engine light came on while traveling southbound on i-95. underneath parts and lower body panels caught fire and melted. vehicle was towed to the paul clark ford dealership in yulee, fl. where it was discovered the engine had experienced a catastrophic engine failure. there was a hole a little smaller than a basketball blown out of the bottom of the crankcase with the oil pump and pieces of the engine laying on the shield covering the oil pan. the car had just been fully serviced with it's routine oil change, recommended service routine, etc by same dealer. even though the vehicle is under full warranty, nothing has been done to repair the vehicle as of yet. ford is conducting an internal review and said it could take up to 90 days before a determination is made. they also have not offered a loaner vehicle or a rental car to the owner while this process is taking place. *tr

I have had to take my car into the ford dealer 5 times in the past 2 months and roughly 15 times in the past year for the same issue, it is under warranty. when i am driving at or around 35 mph my transmission will make a grinding noise and i will lose all power and the car will need to be restarted. i have paid ridiculous amounts in repairs and rentals. i am told that the transmission and clutch is under warranty until 100,000 miles. i am still being charged. this is a safety hazard, i lose all power and have to restart the car in the middle of intersections, and when entering the on ramp to the highway. the techs have told me "it is supposed to drive like this" but i seriously doubt that. ford has acknowledged that my car has a bad clutch and that the clutch is under warranty, but i was told that the part is on national backorder and it could be up to 6 months before it is repaired. i have been told to just keep driving it, when i asked if it was safe they said "probably not, but it is more of a personal problem of mine". this is an on going problem, and i have zero confidence that it will ever be resolved. ford has had me replace everything that is not under warranty in the past 15 months and the same exact problem persists, now i am being told that it is the clutch in my automatic transmission which is under warranty but "it is not a high priority for the dealer" so ill have to wait it out and keep renting cars to keep my job and stay mobile. basically ford wants me to drive the car until i total it due to their faulty transmission and buy another car, or total it and die and not bother them any more, but hey they already have my money. this is why people don't buy american they way they should, the cars don't run properly and the customer service for these companies is atrocious and unsympathetic to the needs of their customers. *js
