Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2000 Ford Focus

At any speed vehicle hesitated/surged forward and stalled. recall 03v482000 was issued for this make/model and year. however, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. also, this vehicle not included in recall 00v302000 concerning throttle sticking problem due to vin. *ak

Fuel pump failure at 53,000 miles.

Started experiencing problems with the vehicle after purchase. suddenly in august, all power systems/computer type items began to fail -- power locks, trunk release. then, car began (and still does) to sputter and shake when stopped/idle until it would shutdown. also, the radio/cd player would shut off. checked for tsbs for the vehicle model & year and found at least 15. when i took the car to the dealer (world ford sandy springs) we were told that they are technical service bulletins and that we would have to pay to have the car repaired. only official ford recall notices, not even ntsa recall notices, would be honored. on top of this, we would be expected to pay $90 per complaint batch (the tsb list was batched in to 3 main areas)for diagnostic purposes and if any of the complaints were related to a recall, the $90 would be refunded as applicable. i expressed that if ford issued a tsb and the ntsa issued a recall notice, then i should not have to pay to have the car worked on.

Fuel cut off while turning, cat stalls if there was no fuel present. *ak

While driving fuel pump failed, causing vehicle to stall in traffic. *ak

When merging on i87 with my 2000 ford focus ztx (52,000 mi) bucked / hesitated severely when i pressed the accelerator down hard in an attempt to bring the car up to merging speed quickly. i was almost rear-ended because driver behind me didn't expect my car to slow down so suddenly. very dangereous situation. happened multiple times, every time when car was under moderate to heavy load, with 1/4 tank of gas or less. took the car to ford. dealer found fuel pump (inside of fuel tank) clogged with debris. fuel tank was flushed and new fuel pump installed. fuel tank should not be shedding debris and fuel pump should not fail on car that is only 3 yrs old.*ak

I own a 200o ford focus and recently saw a media story regarding fuel pump failures. i have had several incidents where my car failed to accelurate or stalled out. the local ford delership reports i have a defective fuel pump. i beleive these should be a recall item. *ak

Fuel gauge giving incorrect readings, car stalling on tight curves such as on-ramps to parkways and interstates. told the problem was the fuel pump. had it replaced on 7/11/03; within 48 hrs lines disconnected from pump spilling fuel everywhere. ford reconnected lines which held for 2 weeks then disconnected again. this time ford replaced the second pump. now its the coolant system that is failing, car overheats then stalls. so far no accident has occured, but it seems only a matter of time.

I have a 2000 ford focus zx3. ever since i bought the car, i have had problems. the day i bought it, i noticed transmission problems, two months after that, i had brake problems. since i have had the car i have gotten my brakes done twice. i have had the car about 15 months now. i also had my ignition cylinder replaced, a fuel filter replaced, and now my car dies when i slow down. i have had nothing but problems with this car. *ak

For the past month or so my car, ford focus, has been hesitating and almost stalling when i am stopped at a light or in traffic. it also hesitates on acceleration from a stopped position or when i am driving down the road. *jb

Consumer received recall 03v482000 concerning fuel pump failure. while driving at any speed, the consumer felt a hesitation in the engine, and then vehicle stalled. even though there was a recall for this vehicle, the manufacturer would not honor it because it was a salvaged vehicle.*ak the consumer stated the coil springs failed. updated 05/11/09. *jb

While attempting to pass on a two-lane highway, my 2000 ford focus sputtered and loss speed for no reason. i was unable to return to my original lane because another car had moved up close to the vehicle i was passing. i had to swerve onto the opposite shoulder of the road to avoid being hit by oncoming traffic

Engine stopped running with no warning while driving on the freeway causing loss of power steering and requiring quick, emergency manuevers to pull off to the shoulder of the freeway. caused by failure of fuel pump and sender assembly.*ak

Loses power on right hand turns (entering freeway especially). stalls while driving. began at about 42000 miles, with a quarter tank of gas, so always kept the tank at least half full. this week stalling has occurred with full tank, trying to accelerate from a stop going uphill. air conditioner. 95000 mi currently. (average 3-4k miles/mo). *ak

Nov 2002 took to dealer the car was purchased from, told them it was sluggish and gas guage didn't always register. i thought at that time it was maybe the transmission. i was told nothing wrong, could not duplicate problem. took to neighborhood dealer for the same problem replaced fuel filter. had all this work before warranty expired in feb 2003. never notified about possible fuel pump. june 27th started car and engine died. it then wouldn't start again for about 30 minutes. i took it immediately to my neighborhood ford dealership. who told me it was the fuel pump and strongly suggest not to drive the car until repair. so the car was left there for repairs. after listen to the service people at the dealership, it came to my attention this was a common problem. i started to invesigate this myself and find 67 cases listed on the nhtsa website. the common statement was that the while driving at any speed and without prior warning vehicle dies out. on car hitting a park vehicle and several near misses on the highway. 2000 ford focus engine sputters and then stalls at high speeds. my concern is that i have heard and read hundred if not thousands of these fuel pump failures and after many nice but ineffective answers from ford i feel that someone will be injured seriously or die to these faulty and possibly dangerous fuel systems. my dealership previously worked on this telling me fuel filter and i feel know well it was more and like the fuel pump. it seem that the gas guage not registering is a clear sign of problems with the fuel pump.

Bought vehicle with a bad fuel pump. dealer replaced it in july 2003. steering column would not work, and dealer replaced it on march 19 2205. middle of april 2005 steering column failed again. will not replace it because it was not under warranty. also , the hatchback door latches are not working properly *ak

2000 ford focus.car loses power during right hand turn when fuel in tank is less that 3/8 full. first occurrence was on mountain road. odometer = about 25k mile car almost rear ended. dealer replaced fuel pump. second occurrence same symptom as above. (odometer = about 52k mile) usually occurs during right hand turn. breathtaking when attempting to accelerate to highway speeds. dealer replaced fuel pump.

Fuel delivery problem, possibly vapor lock/fuel pump related (a common $450-$600 repair way too early in the life of the 2000 & 2001 ford focus according to anecdotal e-mail evidence on internet chat sites), but equally likely to be related to ea02-022. 1st symptom was loss of power upon shifting into 2nd gear. speed there was acceleration from 12 mph up into 2nd gear. the car recovered after a near stall with oncoming traffic approaching. 2nd incident was the next day (today) where i was shifting from around 25 mph into third gear in morning rush hour traffic and was nearly rear-ended because the vehicle stalled. fortunately i was albe to pull over to the shoulder, whereupon the vehicle would not accelerate in any gear/was completely asthmatic. after two minutes in place the vehicle recovered and i was able to proceed. the mechanic wants to replace the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel filter hose and fuel return line....but if the problem is systemic to the fuel delivery system prior to the fuel pump pursuant to the referenced study, then a new pump will be able to draw fuel better/serve as a temporary fix. but, like the original, it too will fail early due to the higher demand on drawing the fuel through the blockage. the tank was approx. 1/4 full at the time of both incidents. *ak

Faulty fuel pump, made vehicle unsafe to operate. contacted ford customer service and selling dealer on 07-18-03 ref splitting cost of repair as this is a known defect on the 2000 and 2001 model year ford focus. as of this date have not had any response from either. the dealership service manager that effected the replacement of the pump stated that the new pump they installed on my vehicle was a much upgraded part from the original. there fore i contend that ford motor company is well aware that this was a defective part installed on the above model years. there should be a recall of these model years for this defect as the fuel pump failure could cause a motor vehicle accident. the cost of the repair was $385.42 complainant is seeking reimbursement of all -or- 80% of repair cost as has been done for other consumers. problem started under warranty but, did not become severe until vehicle was out of warranty coverage. *ak

Fuel pump went out and it also made the fuel pump driver module to go out as well. also there is a loose connection at the fuse junction box in the engine bay.*ak

After driving to work and parking in the parking garage, went inside for about 20 minutes. came back out to car to find a puddle of gasoline which had leaked from the fuel tank. a very dangerous fire hazard. the exhaust system was extremely hot and fuel had leaked all over it. had to have the vehicke towed to the repair garage.. the problem ended up being that the cheap plastic fuel line quick-connector coming from the fuel pump to the fuel line had broken, causing the fuel line to come apart from the fuel pump, allowing fuel to spray all over the tank and exposed parts under the vehicle as well as the concrete garage floor. a spark or lit cigarette butt would have been disastrous. fortunately a fire or explosion did not occur or their surely would have been fatalities.*ak

On 7/5/2003 while driving at 85 mph on the highway engine stalled. the vehicle had this same problem last year ,and the fuel pump was defective. the vehicle will be taken to the dealer on 7/8/2003. *ak

Nov of 2002 took to dealer the car was purchased from, told them it was running sluggish and the gas guage didn't always register. told nothing wrong, could not dulpiate problem. took to neighborhood dealer for same problem, replace fuel filter. had all this work done before warranty expired in feb 2003. never was notified about possible fuel pump. i feel this was left out so the ford deaership and company didn't have to cover this part. i have had problems with both locate dealership on getting repairs completed. having to return the car two or three times to one dealers. i have filed complaints about the leak of service with ford. my milage is 39,400, i have my service done regularly by ford. went to take my daughter to school on june 27th,2003. my car started then died, them wouldn't start again for about 30 minutes. drove to dealer very sluggish. i have spoke to ford about paying for the repairs with no luck. their service managers was the one who bought it to my attention this was a common problem with the focus. then i starting to investigate it myself and his right. he told me of about 10 fuel pumps his replaced in less then 2 months. i personally found other focus owners with the same problem. ford needs to recall fuel pump and make this car safe. *ak

While driving at 55 mph on the highway vehicle lost power and stalled. vehicle was towed to the dealer. the dealer informed the consumer that the fuel pump failed. manufacturer was informed of the problem.*ak

Dealer replaced on september 2002 the fuel pump because the fuel rail was leaking. in june vehicle has been twice at the dealer with the same problem.*ak

While driving vehicle started to leak fuel in the engine, then, vehicle caught on fire. as a result vehicle was totaled. consumer states ford motor company refuses to tell her what exactly happened. dealer notified. *ak

On the 2 ford focus zx3s i owned both exhibited a hesitation problem when the fuel gauge read 1/4 tank of gas or less. one focus was sold, while the other focus had the fuel pump replaced (both vehicles' warranties had expired). there were never any accidents due to the problem, fortunately the problems arose in the neighborhood or on the open highway. *nlm

Stalling,coughing,sputtering

2000 ford focus fuel pump problems. i think that this is something that ford needs to recall. the amount of people that are having to pay ridiculous amounts of money to fix this is stupid. i know that ford is a better company than this and i believe that they need to show their true colors and step up to the plate and recall this part on the focuses. it's also a serious safety issue as well. the car will just die when you round a corner. i don't think that's exactly safe. i can't see paying almost 500.00 to have something replaced that's happening on so many cars. i could see paying that money if it was a scarce problem, but it's not. every focus owner that i know has had to replace the fuel pump at least once. some have had to do it 2 or 3 times. this needs to be a recall and ford knows it. *jb

When turning right it seems the fuel pump stops working. *ak

My wife has a 2000 focus for the past 3 months when she is driving it will die. it can be restarted quickly but it will die multiple times. it will tend to run rough as well when it has this problem and will have no power. the problem now has become and all the time thing. last week after having it at the ford dealer a couple of weeks back, they left all the connections loose and the car had gas running out every were. also have had a code that said we had a bad gas cap. we have replaced everything that has anything to do with the fuel system and it did no good. fuel pump 2 times, fuel regulator, fuel control module. also checked all the connections as per ford bulletin.

Focus has around 60,000 miles. but now all of a sudden the motor will sputter after you start the car and just die out. i had one of the egr sensor replace its located on the firewall and also i had an oil change and just installed new spark plugs, wires, air filter and fuel filter and i had a friend have a quick look at the fuel rail and the vacuum hose they look fine. i here that the fuel pump is the issue with late model focus. i just notice when parking the car backwards at an incline in the driveway, it would start but rev-up very high for about 5-10 seconds and still die out. my next step is to have obd ii test done at aaa to see if they can help out, if not my last choice is ford but i rather not the hell them ford, well my point is i also have acura 90 with 183,000 miles and not even close to the repairs. *nlm

While driving up a hill the vehicle stalled. it was later determined that fuel leaked from the fuel tank. *nlm. *ak *jb

Consumer experienced fuel pump failure. *ph (nar)

I have a 2000 ford focus w/ 2.0 zetec engine that started having problems in may of 2002 when i was driving home on the expressway. symptoms included the car lurching in higher rpms (necessary to maintain speed) and eventually the car was unable to maintain 55 mph and stalled on the expressway. it started up half an hour later, and i was able to limp home at 50 mph on the e-way. that problem disappeared after a week, and showed no signs of coming back until the next time i made a long car trip, when it did the same thing, but thankfully did not stall. the car continued to do this, and ford dealers never did find anything wrong with the car, although one dealer charged me $400 to drain and clean the tank because of debris in the tank causing the car to stall on right turns. if not for the focaljet.com website, i would be stuck with an out-of-warranty defective car that ford flatly refused to cover during the warranty, but was happy to split the cost 50-50 one day after the warranty ended. after making another long trip and having the car sputtering at 4000 rpms, i dropped the fuel tank, removed 2 clogged filters from inside the gas tank fuel-sending unit, and the car has worked perfectly since then. i now have more power, smoother power delivery, no stalling or stumbling on the e-way or on right-hand turns, and the car no longer hesitates with the a/c on. these clogged filters have cost me countless hours, trips to the dealer, and $400 when the fix is just to let the external (and user-serviceable) fuel filter do its job. i have kept the 2 filters that i removed and taken pictures of the fuel canister that contained the clogged filters, in case there is any need to investigate them. *nlm

Was driving south on i44 when fuel pump quit working. car stalled on highway going 75 mph. i pulled over to the shoulder as soon as possible. there could of been a wreck if there was more traffic or no shoulder. very dangerous. *nlm

I am an owner of a 2000 ford focus that has been to the dealer for 10 problems/recalls. the latest and my major concern is my daughter was driving down the road at a very low speed just after leaving a parking lot she hit a very small pothole and immediately the car stalled. luckly a gentleman stopped and helped her get the car off the side. we have 40k miles on the car. we had the car towed to victory ford in lagrange ga. the car was there from may 10-may 23 finally repaired at a cost of 670.00. my concern is that i have heard and read of hundreds if not thousands of these fuel pump failures and after many nice but ineffective answers from ford i feel that someone will be injured seriously or die due to these faulty and possibly dangerous fuel systems. also my dealership previously worked on this fuel system under warranty. after filling the gas tank the only way it registered was after slamming the car doors. that was repaired it seems. *nlm

2000 ford focus zx3 persistent fuel pump issues. stalling under hard right turns. long turnover and starting times. *nlm

Continuous stalling of vehicle especially entering a freeway onramp that has a curve. it has also stalled just sitting in the driveway with at least a quarter tank of gas. it will start if i add a couple of gallons of gasoline to the tank. i am also starting to smell fuel as i drive on occasion. *ak

When accelerating, the vehicle lost power. took vehicle to dealer who said it was the fuel pump problem. *ak this occurred especially when traveling on ramps and clover leaps. the power would resume on low speeds. the dealer stated that the pressure would drop when going around corners. (the fuel pump and filter were replaced) this was the second fuel pump that was replaced since august 2001. *scc *jb

60000 miles on car, 4 sets of tires, 7 recalls, defect in gas tank cover filler, 2 sets of brakes, rear alignment not adjustable (advised by independent shop) and horrible shaking at highway speeds after all this. dealer has been no help with tire problem. never buying a ford again. *jb

My 2000 ford focus with 45,000 miles on it had been experiencing dramatic hesitation problems around highway exit curves/corners. this happened about 4 separate times, with it finally just stalling and breaking down the last time. thank god the cars behind me were not speeding and didn't crash into my rear end. i was able to roll safely a few feet away to a small shoulder area. i turned the car off and waited a second before starting it again. it started right up with no problem. also a few weeks earlier the car wouldn't start one morning. i had it towed to my local ford dealer, who said it simply needed transmission fluid, they added it and it started up. but in the next two weeks is when it began hesitating on curves and feeling like it was going to cut off. but it had happened once prior to that, it hesitated after the curve and wouldn't accelerate even though i was stepping on the gas. when i took it back to ford, they did a full inspection and told me i needed a new fuel delivery module, a new fuel filter and injection cleaning (the latter 2 being regular maintenance). but this fuel delivery module was major. and my extended warranty (not through ford, but with gm major guard) almost didn't cover it, but decided to cover most of it. the ford dealer told me that the cause for the fuel delivery module going bad was just basic wear and tear over time. i find this hard to believe, especially after reading other customer's complaints of the same problem on this web site and an article on www.cartalks.cars.com. please recommend to ford to address this problem before someone is seriously injured. *jb

The vehicle stalled without warning. the dealer stated the fuel pump failed. *jb

Vehicle engine stalls and hesitates when i go around a right hand bend. this happens very regularly as i get onto large or interstate highways.

We have had problems with engine stall for no reason. when we are at 1/4 of a tank or at 1/2 a tank the engine will sputter or stall for no reason.

I have nothing but grief with my 2000 focus. 1) most recently i had was traveling at 50 km/h when my front right coil spring dropped out of the front end. i phoned ford repeatedly and even though i discovered a program covering my the coil springs on i was given the run around saying that i was outside the program recall date by a few months even though the car was made at the wayne assembly plant; where other program recalls were coming from. i ended up in a field when the coil spring broke, narrowing missing the car next to me. i was thankful that i had escaped with my life but not to be covered by ford was a slap to the face. i am very upset about the way they handled this situation and i am determined to let everyone know about this situation. my alignment is also out because of the accident but can't afford to fix it right now. 2) four times since i've owned the car, the car has stalled. twice rounding a corner going onto a highway and 2 twice on a straight away highway. it always happened when the gas gauge was below 1/8 of a tank and so i thought it was my fault because i was running out of gas. of course i blamed myself. but four times ? i began to become suspicious when the car began chugging uphill on a recent long distance trip. i barely made it to my destination. when i took into a ford dealership in sudbury ontario the serviceman told me that knows of the problem though most of them came in under warranty. of course the problem at first only presented itself when the tank was near empty and so i always or nearly always made sure to have at least half a tank full of gas when driving. today the problem is present regardless of how much gas is in the car. very convenient for ford seeing as though i am outside the 60,000 km warranty plan. again i do not feel comfortable driving on the highways anymore. i am hoping that ford will hear me out a pay for the repair.

While driving the vehicle stalled. the dealer stated that the problem was due to fuel injector failure. *nlm *scc
