Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2013 Ford Flex

Received letter from ford advising they would replace driver door sensor due to issues that result in it reading door ajar, resulting in dome lights staying on and battery drain. the same issue occurs on other doors, specifically on mine the back driver side door. this happens sporadically, while driving, while parked, even when the door is not utilized.

While driving my 2013 ford flex the power steering disappeared and i almost lost control of the vehicle. i pulled over and turned it off, when i started it back up the power steering returned to normal. i stopped at my destination but when i returned to leave i found that the power steering was not responding. i drove it home with great difficulty. this repeated several times over the next two weeks, functioning at the start of the day but failing after the vehicle was turned off. the power steering finally gave out altogether. i checked and found that there was a recall that was announced on june 02 of 2015 for this exact issue covering ford flexes from 2010 to 2013. i scheduled an appointment with my ford dealership to get the issue resolved. i was told that my vehicle was manufactured a few months after the recall date, which covered vehicles manufactured up until feb 28th of 2012. i can't understand one, how does a recall cover the years 2010 to 2013 but has an end date for eligibility of 2012?, the recall was announced on june 02 of 2015 and my vehicle suffered the exact same issue of those that the recall extend to. as well as what was done to remedy the part failure after the june 02, 2012 date that my vehicle (suffering the same malfunction/failure and manufactured just outside of the end date of the recall) was not included in the recall? i have found that the issue is within the sealed steering assist assembly itself witch suffers heat damage due to the placement of other components. heat shielding within the unit has been reported to break down, resulting in the interior components to fail due to excessive heat exposure. *js *js

Driving down the road and out of nowhere my vehicle started stalling as if vehicle had no gas. gas tank was full and vehicle showed me a wrench sign as i was looking at my dashboard

Left passenger door ajar alarm comes on randomly and causes the dome light to stay on and drain the battery when the car is stationary. unsafe when it happens when driving at night as it is hard to see the road and causes stress to the driver and to passengers, especially children as the doors will not lock whole moving.

Front passenger door sensor thinks that the door is open when it is closed. the sensor has already been replaced on the drivers side rear door. this appears to be a common problem on the 2013 ford flex as evident when searching for answers. this sensor causes the lights to remain on and drain the battery. it is also affecting the car alarm.

The door sensors do not work properly. these sensors sense when the door is open or closed. the sensor malfunctions causing the doors not to lock or causing them to unlock while driving or even while parked. it will not allow you to lock the doors even when the car is in park. when you try to lock the door manually they will immediately unlock. this inability to even lock the door manually is a an additional safety issue. we cannot feel safe when traveling because we cannot lock the doors and trust them to stay locked. this sensor also causes the interior lights to stay on intermittently. sometimes the lights will be on for hours at a time and you cannot turn them off. often, the battery is dead because the lights have been on. these sensors cause the car alarm to go off if the car is parked and locked because it suddenly shows the doors as open. our doors constantly trip. sometimes when you press the brake to stop the flex, the alarm will ding saying that the door is open and to put the car into park. it is almost like the door sensor moves or tilts when stopping the car losing its connection that allows it to sense to door closure. all of this happens daily! help!!!

Door ajar indicator falsely indicates door is open causing interior lights to remain on while driving as well as an audible alarm. occurs while stationary and while moving. interior lights are distracting at night and unnecessary illumination after park causes battery to drain.

I have had issues with the rear passenger door ajar light coming on and staying on. this results in lights staying on inside the car. it has also resulted in the car alarm going off numerous times. however the door appears to be closed all the way. this has happened when the car is stationary as well as randomly turning on and/or off while driving down subdivision street and major highways. when it is ajar the doors will not lock automatically. this can be a major safety issue and is becoming a major problem for my and my family. please let me know what i can do to have this looked at as it appears i am not the only person having these issues. when the car randomly seems to register the door as closed while driving the doors will then lock, but otherwise the doors will not lock appropriately, i do not have any pictures or documentation i can upload at this time, but i will try to obtain some for you. this issue has been going on now for a few months.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford flex. the contact stated that several various electrical failures occurred with the vehicle, including the power locks being unresponsive while driving and unlocking on their own even when parked. also, the interior lighting illuminated on their own and the front passenger door light remained illuminated while the vehicle was driven. as a result, the battery would run excessively and needed to be replaced. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 47,000.*dt*jb

Failure of engine to start/run due to a faulty fuel pump control module. current ford safety recall #16s31 (nhtsa #16v621) is limited only to ford/lincoln vehicles equipped with the ecoboost turbocharged engine. the faulty component on my normally aspirated engine, fuel pump control module #aa8z-9d370-b, is the same component being replaced on vehicles affected by the #16v621 nhtsa safety recall. to avoid engines shutting off at speed or not starting, it appears that the recall will need to be expanded to include normally aspirated engines as well. we were fortunate because our vehicle failed sitting in our driveway, not at 75 mph on the highway. my wife's concern is what would have happened to her and our four grandchildren if this failure had taken place on the interstate in busy traffic at 75 mph. why is the same component that is failing on ecoboost turbocharged engines being covered by ford safety recall #16s31 not being recalled on similar vehicles equipped normally aspirated engines using the identical component? failure of the component has the same effect of an engine that cuts off at speed or will not start. your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. the safety of the owners of these popular ford/lincoln family vehicles is at stake.

2 door lock/sensors replaced to date (6/2019). door sensors say it is open when all doors are closed. occasionally it will decide the door is open while driving, causing all lights in the vehicle to go on. hazard when driving in the dark. doors do not lock at all while driving if sensor says door is open. was also unable to lock the car while the sensor issue was ongoing because the alarm would go off multiple times a night. battery drained multiple times because interior lights remained on all night and there is no way to turn off interior lights in the 2013 model.

While driving, the car just stops. no power, cannot turn wheel, gas nor brake pedal works. have to restart by pushing ignition button. this has happened a few times already and is a major safety issue.

Door sensor on front passenger door stays on causing dome to stay on. runs battery dead keeps panel lights on. already replaced back passenger door under warranty last year. at 60000 miles warranty is out and cost is $500 to fix. i have read a lot of complaints about this issue.. i cannot let anyone sit in my front passenger seat for fear of not being able to shut door for door sensor to go off and not come out to a dead battery. now the door open light comes on without the door being opened and won't go off. this causes do.e lights to stay on resulting in draining the battery..this is obviously a big issue now. as i have read there is a lawsuit..

I have had two door latches fail in the same vehicle within 2 years of each other. no matter whether the vehicle is moving or stationary, i get a warning stating the right front (and previously the right rear) door was not closed when in fact it was. there is a faulty sensor in the door latches. this also prevents the child locks from engaging since it thinks the doors are open.

Id number 16v621000 isn't associated with my ford flex 2013 even thought the fuel module failed while driving and left us stranded

Vehicle shut off while pulling away from a stop light. pulled to side of road and the aa8a-9d412-ca fuel pump relay was extremely hot and vehicle would crank but not start. pulled connector and let the relay cool. reinstalled connector and vehicle started with no issues. when i returned home i ordered a new relay and replaced the unit. vehicle was in a dangerous situation with traffic around. this could have caused an accident.

Passenger front door ajar warning is displayed, even though door is closed and locked. because the computer thinks the door is open the interior lights remain on causing a visibility hazard when driving at night. also, when exiting the vehicle and locking the doors the interior lights stay on for 10-15 minutes.this will draw attention to the vehicle and let passerby's view the interior contents left in the vehicle for possible theft. this started as an intermittent problem and now is constant every time the door is opened and closed, there is no change of the passenger door ajar status.

I bought my 2013 flex in july of 2015. in august of 2018 my back passenger door started reading as open, at all times. causing interior lights to stay on. also the car alarm started going off at random times.

Driver door latch/relay switch not working properly. driver door shows ajar even when properly shut. interior dome lights stay illuminated at night causing a driving hazard as the car thinks the door is open. repeated door ajar, engine on and shift to park warnings shown on screen. the warnings are random and happen while driving, in park, in gear with foot on brake. while driving the door is seen as shut and the next moment it "appears" open to the car computer alerting the warning. the warnings may be constant for days then not occur for an hour and begin again. this is a known issue by ford and afflicts many, many flex owners. a door latch, which contains the switch relay, has already been replaced once on the vehicle.

2 issues 1) the front passenger door though closed is read as a warning "door ajar". the warning stays on at all times. it drains the battery and i have replaced the battery once since owning the 2013 ford flex when purchased in 2016 with just under 20,000 miles on it. the interior lights stay on from starting the engine until accelerated speed. the interior lights after parked stay on for a minimum of 30 minutes though it could be longer contributing to draining the vehicle battery. 2) the vehicle began to feel as if it is pulled while in commute. not starting right away or shuts down/stalls. it has stalled and not turned over though the lights and radio work. fortunately this has happened after being parked in my parking spot. it will not turn over, but the next morning it will start. after reading about similar issues for other ford flex vehicles last week with my vehicle doing the above action i replaced the fuel pump relay module. which is located in the rear passenger area between rear passenger door and furthest rear window where the seat belt pulls from i felt i had resolved the issue. however, a week exactly later i attempted to start my vehicle when the exact scenario happened all over again. vehicle would not start, but lights and radio worked. left alone overnight i went to start it this morning and it starts. through out the duration of this issue of stalling, not starting, pulling while in motion as it feels like the vehicle is being jerked there is no check engine light or when checking system the only warning is passenger seat ajar.

The door ajar light come on the dash even though all doors are closed. the door unlocks after locking due to the car thinking the door is open. this is the front passenger door. the light will randomly go off and on without even touching the door.this also cause the interior lights to come on which is not safe when driving at night.

Power window failure on all 4 windows. just stopped working

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford flex. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start without warning. the vehicle was taken to greene ford company (2365 brown bridge rd, gainesville, ga 30504, 770-532-5620), but the failure was unable to be duplicated. the contact stated that the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and stated that there was no recall. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

I have a 2013 ford flex and the doors always say they are open even thought they are closed. it causes me not to be able to lock my doors, the dome light to stay on which is very dangerous when reversing at night out of a parking spot, and i believe it's unsafe being that i have children and i can't know whether or not the doors are closed accurately. i've contacted ford several times and get the run around. the dome light will stay on until i've hit 10mph. reversing with a bright dome light on is very dangerous. i've also had to replace my battery several times because the light stays on.

Door ajar warning on with door closed, wont lock doors when put in motion, alarm going off, dealer wants $1200 to fix

The driver side door sensor keeps saying that the door is open when it's closed. while driving the car says shift to park and constantly alerts because it thinks that the door is open and won't allow the doors to lock. the car alarm goes off randomly even when it's locked and you aren't able to use the buttons to turn off the alarm without manually inserting the key in the door while pressing the button.. and the light on in the car will stay on all night because it thinks the door is open. i have seen this as an issue for many other people who own the ford flex as well. with the doors not locking during driving and battery drainage this concerns me as a mother.

Right passenger door keeps saying ajar when closed. interior light stays on when doors shut and car is in motion.. open and shut door several times but indicator stays on. alarm goes off randomly at anytime car is parked. doors do not lock anymore when car is being driven. safety concerns that door is not shut when car is in motion.

The door ajar light is on even when the door is securely closed!

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford flex. while the vehicle was in reverse, all the warning indicators illuminated. while the vehicle was parked, the trunk opened independently. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer informed the contact that there was no recall on the vehicle and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

The rear passenger side door sensor is on saying door is not closed. door is closed and sensor will not go off. this keeps the inside lights in the vehicle on for a certain amount of time after you start driving or after you turn the car off. it is very hard to see at night when you are trying to back up and the inside lights in the car are on.

The drivers side door is showing that it is open randomly when i am driving down the road. (door is closed and locked) the lights and alarm will come on and makes it unable to see at night when driving. this is a safety issue and needs to be recalled due to unsafe driving conditions. the door sensor is a issue that needs to be fixed.

This car is riddled with electrical problems most importantly the passenger door doesn't read closed so the doors won't lock when you start driving allowing my 3 year old niece to open the door at 20 mph almost giving my wife a heart attack. then the alarm goes off at all kinds of random times, if this happens while driving it also shuts off and locks the steering wheel disallowing you to get the vehicle off the road luckily i live in a small place where it's not been a cotastrify. also just recently a crash indication module decided it ha d been in an accident and stranded my wife 75 miles from home. oddly i have a family friend who traded her flex in for the same reasons.

The vehicle incorrectly believes the doors are open when they are shut. this prevents the doors from locking at all speeds, which is an unsafe condition. if an occupant tries to lock the doors while the vehicle is in motion, the vehicle immediately unlocks the doors. the issue also causes the interior lights to stay illuminated while the vehicle is parked and until the vehicle reaches an appropriate speed when in use. the open/closed state of the door changes at random (without the actual door being opened or closed) and causes the alarm to randomly go off when the vehicle is parked. the combination of the lights staying illuminated and the alarm going off when the vehicle is parked drained and ruined the battery in the vehicle. jump starting the vehicle did not work and the battery had to be replaced.

When stationary and parked, the door ajar error message appears on the dash for the driver's door after entering the vehicle. this produces error messages on the screen, turns on the interior lights, and prevents the doors from being locked. after repeatedly opening and slamming the door shut multiple times the message may or may not go away. if slamming the door shut multiple times does not work the messages, lights, and inability to lock the doors continues while in motion.

Car battery dying. said synch line is in, but it's not. door ajar lights for both driver and passenger side are always on. when come to a stop, beeps and says engine on, shift to park. can't lock doors. have to manually lock doors, otherwise the alarm always goes off. so cannot lock the hatch. this is a safety and theft problem. interior lights stay on for hours at a time. cannot see when backing out of places at night because the interior light is on. this is going to cause an accident.

Apim failed over a year ago. this is a large vehicle to not have a backup camera, no navigation or radio adjustments. i was never included in the recall. i reached out to ford to see why and they said my car was not in the system. i have 2 flex and a lincoln mkt and the dealers are terrible about doing anything without charging. 89.9o tk check a recall problem.

My 2013 ford flex has door latch sensor issues. when i am driving anywhere (city, highway, interstate) my interior lights will randomly turn on and i get a 'door ajar' notification when the doors are clearly closed. it is alarming and has almost caused accidents. when i researched the problem online, it is an extremely common problem that has caused numerous accident and cost flex owners thousands upon thousands of dollars, only to have the problem reoccur in 6 months to a year. i recently contacted my ford dealership and they too are aware of the problem and stated that it is a very common problem in flex's and i will probably have to replace the latch system every 2-3 years. at $350-500 a latch this is a very dangerous and costly problem to be so common. the solution most suggest is to ground the wire going to the latch, which will totally default the sensor all together and make the vehicle think that the doors are closed at all times, which is also very unsafe.

1. driver and passenger side door sensor/latch/electrical malfunction. door is ajar warning does not turn off. doors cannot lock when driving. major safety issue for kids in back seats. alarm goes off anytime randomly. drains battery and affects electrical system. faulty back up camera. 2. water pump failure under engine. covered by 6yr/60k warranty, failed at 62k miles. replacement cost is an extreme high cost of $2700.

When the door is closed the light indicates it is open on the driver side and the passenger side. there is a recall on 2014 15 and 16 for the same issue

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford flex. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, all the vehicle doors failed to lock. the contact also stated that the dome light was constantly illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that passenger side door module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the battery to the vehicle had to be replaced twice due to the failure. the local dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, they filed a complaint with the manufacturer. the failure mileage was approximately 55,000. the vin was invalid.

Passanger door thinks its ajared. door is secured its just think its openned. won't allow me to lock automatically and will set off the alarm. other than having the indication while driving, most of the problems are when it is parked and locked (if i could). i'm just dealing with the alarm issue now, dome lights always on, and soon to be dead battery.

The rear passenger door closed electrical contact does not show door closed. dome lights stay on and drain battery. dealer wants $400 to repair it and when told to cut the wire he laughed. the car was in motion when this happened the first time. it does not shut off.

Passenger rear door sensor thinks door is open at all times. effect alarm system, etc. vehicle has apprx 65000 miles.

The sensor for the right rear door being closed is coming on when the door is actually closed. this is also causing the car's door opening sensors to be activated, making the interior lights, head and tail lights, and keyless entry lights to turn on sporadically. because the door open sensor light is on all of the time, it is impossible to detect when the door is actually open, creating a safety hazard. the company is aware of this defect per bulletin sb-10054930-1306 and has not issued a recall. the defect did not occur on my vehicle until it was well beyond its new vehicle warranty.

Door ajar indicator remains on when door is not ajar. also, alarm goes off randomly usually when parked and locked.

I parked my car to go food shopping and when i came back to leave, the steering wheel became locked and it would not turn

I have had two door latches fail in the same vehicle within 2 years of each other. no matter whether the vehicle is moving or stationary, i got a warning stating the right rear (and now the right front) door was not closed when in fact it was. there is a faulty sensor in the door latches. this also prevents the child locks from engaging since it thinks the doors are open.

Constant door ajar warning when all doors are closed (or open) drains battery and continually sets off car alarm. doors no longer lock when car is in motion. doors cannot be locked once parked or alarm will sound within 10-15 minutes. issue has drained multiple batteries and stranded owner. dome lights come on unexpectedly while driving at night - issue occurs on streets and highways. ford dealer recommends replacing all door latches at >$200 a piece with no guarantee of issue not recurring.

The door ajar warning comes on even when the doors are closed. with this happening the overhead lights stay on an alarm sounds and tells you to shift to park when you stop the doors don't lock because it thinks the doors are open and the alarm goes off whenever the car senses the doors are ajar when shut off and the lights don't turn off all night long because it thinks the doors are open.

On thursday, april 6th 2017, i went out to my car (stationary) and it would not start. i had just driven it to the doctor's office approximately an hour earlier. there had been no warning lights or indications. ford certified pre owned warranty covered the tow to the dealership. dealership could not diagnose vehicle the same day and i had to rent a vehicle. on friday, dealership diagnosed the problem as a faulty fuel pump module. they indicated to me that it was not covered under the certified pre owned powertrain warranty. i called my extended warranty company which covered only a portion of the repairs and they did not cover the rental car amount. the total amount for service was $856. i paid $537 of that plus and additional $40 for the rental car. on monday, april 10th, i did some research and found that certain 2013 ford flexes had a recall on fuel pump modules. your website listed, "fuel pump malfunction may cause engine stall. a loss of power to the fuel pump will cause the engine to stall or prevent the vehicle from starting, increasing the risk of a crash. ford's number for this recall is 16s31." i called ford customer service and they checked my vin number. they indicated that my vehicle was not covered under that recall. i was shocked as this is the same exact problem that other vehicles had. i believe that ford should be responsible for the cost of repairs and should reimburse me. i was very fortunate to not have been driving or have my children with me when the module stopped working. i would appreciate nhtsa looking into this matter and following up.
