We have classified the 315 complaints from 2013 Ford Fiesta about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Hesitates, grinds, shutters, lurches when excellerating from a stop or slow speed. it also rolls back from a level stop sometimes when you swith your foot from brake to gas. it has been to the shop at least twice but continues the same things. the explanation is that after its worked on it resets and has to learn how to shift as transmission again.

This car has had ongoing problems with the transmission. it lurches, does not always accelerate when the gas pedal is pressed, slips gears, shudders, sometimes dropping speed abruptly without warning. this has nearly caused several accidents. the severity varies but at this time, 9/2015, the car has not been consistently drivable. it currently has 29k miles.
I bought the car in october 2014. it was a week later i noticed the issues with the transmission that i would push on the gas pedal that it would either jerk or take a second just too get the car to move. i took it in to a dealership and the dealership was terrible and said they fixed it. however when i got the car back the next day i was driving to work in sandy, utah on state street when the transmission went out and i had to get it towed back to the dealership where they wouldn't take any ownership of the issue. they said it was a "coincidence". they fixed it and i didn't have an issue until two months later the issue started happening again with the jerking forward and feeling that it was lurching forward.
When accelerating the fiesta lurches and then goes forward. the air conditioning pumps out cool air and then hot air off and on. the lurching issue has not been repaired and this is the fourth visit.
The car shudders and spits at take off. sometimes stalls both in forward and reverse when i first give it gas.
When at a stopped position and i go to take off, the car will shutter and almost want to cut out. it almost does not know what gear it wants to go into. i am worried with this transmission. i never have had a car that shifts like this before.
Car sputters on take off almost dying in the middle of major intersections. radio electrical shorted out the first 3 months and smoke from hood. the right rear door flew open going down the highway

This is follow-up to incident #10639225 (26sep2015), and details continued trouble from initial complaint. the vehicle has returned to the shop four times (currently in shop) for power-shift transmission clutch shudder. two of the four found shudder tsb logging 150-170 rpm loss between shifts (ford claims acceptable?), one found/replaced leaking cv shaft seal, and fourth currently being diagnosed. on the third incident (one listed above), dealership found shudder and 170 rpm loss (stated on invoice they drove vehicle), but invoice shows zero miles driven in-shop? my first question is this...why is any rpm loss (above 100 rpm's) acceptable for a computer controlled automatic transmission?? second...under normal driving conditions (which this car is driven) why are there cv issues??? ford has multiple tsb's and fsa's surrounding this transmission yet nhtsa does nothing about it! this transmission (with all of the nhtsa complaints against) clearly is a design flaw and a safety risk!! i request feedback on this issue. thank you! updated 9/28/15 *bf..updated 01/13/15 *bf..updated 05-19-16 *bf ..updated 02/15/17 *bf ...updated 03/15/17 *bf *cn
Transmission issue hesitates apon excelleration.. close to stallimg exstremely dangerous when pulling out into traffic @ stop sign excellerating situation to merge into moving traffic hasbeen an prblom for several years now has been to dealership at leasr 3 times for this complaint
Vehicle has transmission condition according to all complaints regarding shifting, vehicle is at ford dealership as of now for 7th time for same condition...clutch pack has been replaced and condition still present, vehicle has stalled last time we picked up week ago to point was almost t-boned from city bus as vehicle stalled in intersection, last time they told me was ignition concern and replaced plug wires...back into shop after weekend. same problem no power no shift feels like taking off in 4th gear or higher, as i said in dealership now for week and unable to determine cause...due to check engine light came on for 7th time and they say no transmission codes...i am tired of this condition and looking for final repair, transmission replacement, or refund/replacement of vehicle. i feel after 7 times to dealership is more than enough for same condition....believe this falls into lemonlaw about now!
The rear passenger side door, where my son sits in his booster, stopped closing one afternoon on our way to his soccer game. i used a piece of rope to tie the door across the car to the door opposite until i could get my car into the ford dealership the next day. i searched the internet and saw an article regarding other 2013 ford fiesta's having the same issue. i took my vehicle the next day to the dealership and since i was there i let them know that my car, which only had 15k miles on it, has a problem with acceleration. when i accelerate i hear an airy sound coming from the engine and i lose power so that i accelerate very slowly. this is a huge safety issue when getting onto the highway. i was advised when i picked up the car that the lock was a recall item as was an issue with the cooling system that they fixed. in addition, when they checked for the airy sound they found i have a bad transmission. my service rep said the transmission was on back order for 30 days. that was may 2015. today is 11/2/2015 and i still do not have the parts to replace my transmission. i have asked several times if i could have a rental car or borrow a car from ford until my transmission is fixed due to the low acceleration and have been told time and again that they can not "authorize" it.
A month after purchase when pushing on the gas the car would not move sometimes while other times it would accelerate on its own. was taken back to wayne akers ford where we purchased and told that it was a transmission issue that could not be fixed until the transmission was completely non functioning. have continued to have issues since. then i brought it to al packer ford west and was told that there was nothing they could do as the sudden acceleration or no acceleration was a known issue with the transmission that they could not do anything about. i was informed that the warranty was extended for the issues but i would have to wait until the transmission met ford's definition of defect or defunct. my 17yr old son drives this car and it is not safe.
The transmission has a recall on it. it has been in the shop and replaced 3x. it still is not fixed. it passes the test when its hooked up to the machine but when driven it fails and goes back to the shop. the problem apparently has something to do with ford and how it is made. now a engine malfunction light always comes on. the manual says that it should not be driven because it may not shift. i have almost been in countless accidents because the transmission will not shift. it does not accelerate. it jerks, shakes, and grinds. i wrote to ford and they didn't care. told me to take it up with the dealership. this has been nonstop since i bought it last year till now and its ongoing. i do not feel comfortable driving my child in this car. someone needs to be held accountable.
I had routine maintenance performed at the dealership on my 2013 ford fiesta on april 10, 2015. everything passed inspection. shortly thereafter, i began to notice the vehicle was sounding louder. as the weeks went on, it got progressively louder, i liken it to the sound of an airplane engine, and it would sometimes hesitate. on april 24, 2015, while running errands with my wife and 2 young children, the car stalled as we attempted to pull out of a store parking lot onto an extremely busy route. an suv narrowly missed hitting us. the car finally went into gear and we were able to proceed with caution. from that point on, it has been shuddering and there is a grinding noise that can be heard. i brought it in to the dealership the next day. they say they are aware of this problem occurring with numerous fiesta's and focus's, but cannot do anything because the parts are unavailable. i feel unsafe behind the wheel and i fear my car may be irreversibly damaged, or worse, someone may lose their life. *tr
Car shakes and shudders when accelerates. at times it jerks and hesitates when stopped. when moving forward sounds like gears grinding , it is automatic. i have taken it 4 times to ford in cocoa florida where i bought it and to be repaired and it still making grinding sounds and jerking! i am very cautious to pull out in traffic, afraid for me and my family to be riding in it.
Multiple issue's with my ford fiesta (2013) transmission. have taken it to the ford dealer to get the tcm re-programmed about 3 times and had it replaced twice. taken it back for the shuttering issue.car would stall after moving forward from a complete stop. have had the clutches replaced in it. took it back again on july 5th 2019 for an issue with it slamming into reverse. was told it was ready about a week later on july 11th. after paying $60, the service guy tells me it will not go into drive after looking into the issue. i keep calling and keep getting told that they are waiting for a tool to come in to try and get into drive. today is july 24th 2019 and still no car.
I slowed down for a truck turning into a driveway, when pressing the accelerator the transmission slipped, and i had to pull over into the turn lane, and put my car into low to re-engage the transmission. i cannot help but to think that this same scenario with me slowing down in the same manner could have happened at a stoplight when trying to turn left before an oncoming car. i have had it bog down and hesitate quite a few times at lights, but this is the first time the transmission actually slipped out of gear. i have had the car in twice to the dealership, and the second time they told me they didn't do anything to fix it because everything is normal. i bought a new car so i did not have to worry about my family's or my safety. could you please look into this issue. thanks *tr
I initally leased, and then purchased, a 2013 ford fiesta. i have been the only driver of the vehicle. i have had a the transmission pieces replaced once and the vehicle is back in the shop for the second time. i don't understand how there can be so many recalls related to the transmission but no recall of the car itself. it lurches forward, will not shift into gear from a complete stop or almost stopped car. i've had many near misses and feel incredibly unsafe driving the vehicle. the car only drove for a few thousand miles before the problems crept back up, possibly even worse than before.
3/27/15 i only had my car for a year(the problem started from the first week of purchase i called they try to brain watch me stating the car was built that way). and i'm in the process of taking my car back in for service. i just took it in a week ago for the same concern. the vehicle hesitates severely gears and transmission shudders. this is a safety hazard when in traffic the transmission will stall and pull. i'm in danger of any normal speed car hitting me from behind. ford dealer wants to put me in a waiting list for a clutch and transmission issue. ford should be more concern for their consumers!!!! but for the look of it they do not care!!! i'm fear for my safety. they refuse to get me into a new car or even loan me a car.(this is ford in the san fernando valley) this car should not be on the road it is a hazard for the rest of the drivers as-well. *tr
Since i have had the car, it shutters and jerks while driving at any speed. the car flips out of gear into another gear while driving. it's unsafe, and it's a huge problem. *tr
Purchased fiesta used in dec 2014. told by golf mill dealership no recalls on this vehicle. in march or april 2015 clutch in automatic transmission was replaced because upon acceleration the car hesitated and lurched forward. in may the same issue is occurring. had the timing reset and the car is lurching again.
Tl*the contact owns a 2013 ford fiesta. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission failed intermittently . the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 25,000. the vin was not available. updated 8/10/15*cn the consumer stated the engine light would illuminate and then go out. also, the vehicle accelerated on its own while the cruise control was activated. updated 08/20/15*jb
2013 ford fiesta. consumer writes in regards to transmission problems. *smd the consumer stated it felt as though the vehicle was going to stall, as it would sputter and make noises. the dealer informed the consumer the parts were on back order. *jb
Our ford fiesta was bought new in 2013 and ran great until 10k miles at which point the automatic transmission would not select a gear when attempting to accelerate from a slow down. ford dealer took car in and per the service bulletin did a re-flash of trans control. car ran fine another 1k miles, than issue occurred again , the car not selecting a gear and causing a hazard because we were unable to get out of the way of oncoming traffic while making a left turn. dealership at that point replaced clutch pack because the say it had fluid in it, also another service bulletin. now another 2k miles and the car did it again during a snow storm causing us to be unable to get out of the way of a plow which narrowly missed hitting are car. ford has now had the car another half week and said there is nothing they can find wrong so there is nothing to do.this is very unsafe car and more needs to be done about this major hazard. hopefully no one loses there life because this issue is not taken more seriously by ford motor co. *tr
The vehicle shuttered, make grinding sound and hesitated when starting up and driving. at every stop light, stop sign when starting up again, the same sounds, and hesitating would occur. took vehicle in to the dealer who said i needed another clutch and transmission. about $3000.00. i have another vehicle same year, same model, and exactly the same situation is happening, these vehicles should be recalled immediately. *tr
Took the car in and they gave us a rental. the tech called yesterday to say they are working in it (day 2) then they call this morning to say what it is doing is normal. i told them it is not normal for a car to just lose momentum then when it does go it lurches forward and starts going real fast. there is a problem either with the engine or transmission. someone is going to get killed and i am deadly afraid its going to be one of us. ford just does not want to admit there is a problem. *tr
I took my 2013 ford fiesta in to get the oil changed and to determine why the car was making a grinding/shutter/tugging noise/feeling on february 16, 2015 to randall reed's prestige ford, 3601 south shiloh road, garland, tx 75041. i was informed there was a recall on the clutch and that it would be replaced free of charge. prestige ford did the work on march 6, 2015 and replaced the clutch. a week later the car was still making the grinding/shutter/tugging feeling . i returned to prestige ford and the clutch was on back order. prestige ford replaced the clutch a second time on may 14, 2015. 5 star ford has replaced the clutch a third time on dec. 14, 2015 and it is still making the grinding noise and they failed to put water in the cooling reservoir and the check engine coolant light is on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fiesta. the contact stated that vehicle has been in the shop five times for transmission related issues. the clutch was replaced three times. the dealer was unable to determine a solution. the contact was unable to determine if the vehicle would be repaired. the vehicle was at the dealer for further inspection and diagnosis. the manufacturer was notified of the failure several times and was unable to provide a remedy to the dealer. the failure mileage was not available. updated 08/04/16.*jb
This is at least the 12th time we have taken in the car out which 2 times (now a third) they have admitted there is a problem. ford sent me a letter advising they were aware of "possible" problems with the transmission. they say its an automatic/manual transmission and it can leak from one chamber to another causing grinding, loss of motion etc. they gave all owners a 100,000 mile warranty for the transmission. problem is i paid for a 100,000 mile warranty on the car already. we were turning a (winding road) slight curve when it sounded like the whole transmission was falling out of the car and we lost motion. the car behind us slammed on his brakes horn blaring and swerved just barley missing us. *tr
Letter from congressman fleming on behalf of constituent re 2013 ford fiesta complaints. *smd the consumer stated when she pulled off from a stop, or made turns, the vehicle would jerk, as if the vehicle was going to shut off. several weeks later, the command button on the steering stopped working. the consumer was informed the vehicle needed an update. the command button only worked for a couple of months and the jerking happened more frequently. the consumer was informed once again, the vehicle needed another update and the vehicle needed a new clutch. the consumer stated the vehicle performed as normal for one day. the consumer experienced a new issue, where the vehicle would squeal, when it was placed in reverse, or when she made turns. the command button stopped working again, and she was informed a pin was bent and was rubbing against the rotor, which caused the squealing noise. *jb
After i had this car about 16 months and around 12000 miles, the transmission started to act up. it would jerk the car and then it wouldn't accelerate. they reset the computer and changed the transmission. it ran ok for about a month or two and driving one day it felt like the whole bottom dropped outta the car and i couldn't go. they reset the computer 2 more times in a 5 month span and said there is nothing else to do bc all the tests come back within ford specs. i feel like i'll get killed on the highway because if i try and change lanes i cant accelerate to keep up with the flow of traffic. in the city it jerks all around. it seems to work best under 25 mph as long as i don't hit the gas or brakes. it takes alot to get it up to 65 mph and as soon as you take your foot off the gas it drops to 45 in seconds and then its hard to get going again. for a brand new car its ridiculous, i'm just happy i can hand the keys in another few months, if it doesn't kill me first. *tr
Automatic transmission slips and does not shift smoothly. the ford dealership has worked on it twice without repairing it. it is in for a third time and the plan is to replace the same part they replaced last time. the problem began at 10,000 miles and reoccurs every 10,000 miles. though the car remains under warranty, this is a dangerous situations that needs to be corrected by ford immediately before some one gets killed.
While traveling at 55 mph on the highway my ford fiesta started to not shift up or down and seemed a bit stuck. after taking it to the dealer they reprogrammed the powertrain control module. only a couple months later the car started to having trouble with gear shifting at low and high speeds and also seems to slip when trying to shift. car has repeatedly come close to stalling and has lost almost all power at various times. the car dealer now says it needs a new clutch and it will take 16 weeks for it to arrive. until then i am not to drive it long distances. very dangerous car, i am afraid i will be hit trying to turn because the engine will lose power at the wrong time.
I had just bought this car four days prior to the incident. i was accelerating from a stopped position (stop light). it seemed as though my car *skipped* and *jerked* a little in order to gain momentum. then, when i turned a corner, i heard a slight rattling/grinding noise coming from underneath the hood, especially on the left side. i called the dealer's ([xxx] in alexandria, ky) service dept to report the problem and schedule an appointment. i was told that they're so backed up, the first available appointment is on 2/18/15. the lady i spoke to mentioned that my car is part of a recall, and that the clutch assembly needs to be replaced. she said something about the manufacturer being unable to build the parts fast enough. i've now had the car ten days. on the eighth day, the *service engine* light came on and has not turned off. because of this, the dealer has given me an appointment on 12/10/15 to have it checked out. one of the salesmen that i interacted with on the evening of the sale, said it's probably related to the transmission problem. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I've had the car for two years. i've been complaining about the car "shuttering" issue for a year and a half. within the first year i complained about it they said that they were getting similar complaints and handed me a flyer from a stack that they had readily available at their desk which mentions what i'm experiencing is normal and will go away with time. earlier this year i brought the car in with this issue and they had to remove the transmission and replace parts in the gears. the issue seems to be getting worse. yesterday, i was at a traffic light waiting to turn left. i started to accelerate then the car started to majorly shutter. it caused a significant delay in time that it would normally take to make the turn while i was in mid turn at a very busy intersection with approaching traffic. a few weeks ago i made an appointment to bring my car in today. when i explained what happened to me yesterday they said they were aware of this "shuttering" issue and had multiple complaints. i asked them many questions....some of the questions were: when i brought this to your attention in the first year why did you ignore my complaint and hand me a flyer telling me this is normal? when my husband brought the car in for scheduled maintenance a few weeks ago why didn't you inform him that there was a recall notice on the transmission that extends the service warranty and that there could be a safety issue? she explained that ford was to blame and not the dealership. she said that ford was giving them misinformation and told them all along that this was normal of the transmission and so that's what they were telling their customers. i urge you to please look into this because this is a severe safety hazard. *tr
We bought the 2013 ford fiesta brand new. the transmission/clutch causes the car to lurch excessively. nearly rearended another car. ford replaced the clutch, but it continues to have the exact same issues. ford should be required to replace these junk dangerous transmissions/clutches with the old style used on most cars which actually work. please give the public satisfaction by requiring ford to come up with a real solution to this problem. *tr

Car makes a grinding noise as mileage increase and does not shift properly. hesitation while trying to accelerate, makes grinding noise and stutter /shuttering. it rolls backwards on inclines and the transmission jerks while i am driving. it has been serviced twice for the same problem and each time i was told that this normal. car runs okay for 3000 miles most of the time. i fear that i am going to rear end someone and that someone will rear end me . it makes noise as i turn corners.
