Problems with 2013 Ford Fiesta ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2013 Ford Fiesta starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 50 002 miles.

Components Affected by ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Issues

We have classified the 40 complaints from 2013 Ford Fiesta about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.

SOFTWARE 1

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2013 Ford Fiesta

Due to lack of sealer preventing outside debris from enter the fuse box under the hood. corrosion sets in and causes intermittent issue with day time driving lights while not effecting high beams. unexpected scenarios showed this could happen at any time, with a higher likelihood during cold temperatures with freezing participation

Headlights on 2013 ford fiesta began working intermittently while driving at night. upon further inspection, the low beam light relay was so badly corroded that it had broken off inside the fuse box, making the relay impossible to replace. the corrosion appears to be a result of a design flaw allowing moisture in the fuse box. canada has a similar recall reference number 19s28 associated with this exact issue.

Low lamp headlights on both sides went out at the same time, while parked in a parking lot at night. took vehicle to get head lamps replaced, had to have diagnostic run and found that the fuse and fuse box were corroded to the point of needing replaced.

While driving on a city street or otherwise, my car's engine malfunction light will come on. the car will suddenly jerk and slow down. no matter how hard i press on the gas pedal, it will not go over 30mph. i have almost been slammed into several times due to the sudden loss of speed. i've taken it in twice and had the gas pedal replaced as the computer picks up a problem between the chip and the computer. and both times the new part has failed. i've looked into this and it seems to be a reoccurring problem across the board, and a dangerous one considering ford is aware of the problem

The headlights quit working. i was out shopping and finished at just about sunset. i went to turn the headlights on but no lights but all the running lights were on. i turned the switch on and off repeatedly still no headlights; tried the high beams, they worked. i drove home with the high beams on and was constantly flashed by on coming traffic. the next morning i checked the fuses then the relays for low beam. found the problem - relay r11 had a badly corroded prong which broke off in the box itself. i can not pull the corroded prong out - nor can i drive a night until the entire unit is replaced. my wife is on hospice and this couldn't have happened at a worst time. after researching online, it seems that mine is not an isolated problem at all, but none the less is very dangerous.

Turn signals stopped working, replaced bulbs with no luck. checked fuses and it was blown, replaced fuse and it worked for about 45 minutes then blew the fuse again. every time we replace the fuse it blows within an hour. radio stopped working and would make very loud popping noise while driving. we finally had to pull the fuse for the radio to make it stop. so now there is no working radio as we are afraid to replace the fuse. my daughter drives this lemon daily as it is her only transportation to work. she still owes more for the car than she could get if she tried to trade it in on something else. this car needs to be classified as a lemon and taken off the roads. she has had nothing but problems since she bought it, but she didn't get it new so by the time she bought it of course there was no warranty and now she is stuck with it. also, she previously had to put it in the shop due to transmission issues. she stopped at a red light and on take off the car wouldn't go, rpms were around 3000 and all warning/message lights went off at the same time. found out there was a recall on her car that we never knew about when we purchased it from the dealer.

Sensor on my car is saying my trunk is open and it's not. also, when i unlock my car the trunk pops open. interior lights wont turn off.

Electrical fuse block inside engine compartment is rusted throughout entire fuse block. vehicle sporadically fails to start, driver side head lamp does not work, and air conditioning is blowing hot air.

Headlights quit working. brought it to auto parts store. manager stated that relay fuse for the low beams was fully corroded and one of the prongs broke off in the fuse box. he said the fuse box looks poorly designed and allows sand and water to enter. prong stuck in fuse box -- not sure how much it will cost to get out - can't reach it with a tweezers or anything else. i live in the midwest where they put salt on the roads which may be the root of the problem. looks like there may be a recall in canada for this same issue but none in the usa. internet search shows many people having the same issue.

On 9/20/18, while stopped at a busy intersection for a red light, upon attempting to move forward when the light turned green the car simply would not move. i placed the car in park, shut it off to restart thinking it would reset itself somehow and instead not only would it not restart but the gear shift would not move out of park so that i could push it out of the traffic. i had to call the local police to wait in the road with lights flashing at the intersection to avoid being rear-ended and until the tow truck could arrive. the "engine malfunction" light comes on so often (which usually gets a "reprogramming" at the dealer) that it has become unnoticeable, but i do not recall seeing it before becoming immobile. it was taken to a local ford dealer, where they said it was covered under the extended warranty ford issued (tcm part, i believe). this car has approximately 70,000 miles on it but has been in the shop for "warrantied" repairs involving reprogramming, throttle, gas pedal sensor, clutches, etc. on many many occasions. in the past, i have taken it in complaining about the returning light and when it has shuddered and lost power momentarily while attempting to enter traffic on the interstate (once even as a tractor trailer approached). traffic has had to shift lanes to avoid hitting my car. it has shuddered in intersections and onramps before, but never became completely immobile without recovery. if this isn't a safety issue, i don't know what is. i cannot experience the fear and helplessness that occurred last week again, so two days later i went and purchased a new vehicle (not ford) and accepted a huge loss on the trade-in value because i value my family's safety and my life far more. my many services have all been through ford and are available in my service record at ford.

While driving air conditioning, radio and headlights cuts out intermittently and warning lights come on and then go off. turn tcs system off? is also displayed when this happens. since this car has a manual transmission it happens when clutch is being engaged.

There are issues with both the radio and the message screen on the dashboard. the radio problems are indeed a safety issues. i purchased this car in february of this year. at first, the radio would just intermittenly go out and would come back on after a short period of time. however, as time went on, extremely loud static would burst from the speakers every time the radio went out, whether or not keys were in the ignitiod. this has happened while driving - which is a terrifying distraction when you least expect it. the radio has been out for weeks now - it has come back once or twice, but always quickly goes back out, with that loud static blast. beyond that loud blast...there has also been instances where the static simply continues - again this has happened while traveling and it's so distracting it really could cause an accident - i feel lucky that hasn't happened. i also have a few videos of this happening and would be happy to share. in addition to the radio, random messages are displayed on the display screen, i.e driver/passenger door open while not actually open. the "critical engine failure" message has displayed more than once when nothing was actually wrong - again, a terrifying distraction when traveling (especially on the highway as i have been when that message appears.) from what i have seen online, this is an insanely common problem with 2013 ford fiestas. an estimate to replace the radio came in at $280 without labor - that's really insane for a problem that is clearly a design/system flaw specific to this make and model, not simply the vehicle i specifically own. i do have a couple of pictures of the message display (unfortunately not the critical engine failure message) but again, i have multiple videos of the radio issue that i'm happy to provide (also the date below is random - it's happened many times on different occaisions)

Ongoing issue - key was not in the ignition, you hear loud static coming from radio/audio system. please note this happens randomly while the car is moving or parked - key not in ignition. the radio no longer functions - you hear 'cracking and popping' regularly and sometimes the volume is startling driving down the road and the audio system starts blaring static, you jump reacting to the noise. this causes distracted driving which is illegal in california and many other states. this is a safety issue. there are hundreds of complaints online in many blogs about this product who are experiencing the same problem. intervention by nhtsa is needed before someone is hurt in an accident from being distracted by this blaring noise. some consumers can not afford to replace or remove the systems. additionally due to the design of the system you would have to replace it with another ford product since the air vents are attached to the system. please note while these electrical/audio static problems are going on, the sync system hasn't been fully operational either. my state does not allow driving with cellphones so an unavailable sync system is not only a pain but prevents compliance with the law.

My traction control off keeps coming on with the check engine light also and my blue tooth on the steering wheel won't work . when the traction control off comes on i loose power in my pedal and acts like it doesn't wanna go.

I bought this car from a houston honda dealership in may of 2017, i late september 2017, early october 2017, i took my car into the honda dealership because my 'traction control', 'abs', & 'anti-skid' lights came on. my radio cut in & out, my headlights would cut off and on/dim while driving, causing the gears in my car to shift. i was told to take it to ford. i took it to ford, they diagnosed it, i needed a new 'tcm' which is the computer system inside of the car. the warranty covered it, & i got a new one. after that, i was told i needed a new battery, so i got one, put it in, the car ran good for a month or so. the 'tcm' slipped again, & i was back to square one. november 2017 is then the transmission problems really began; interior dashboard lights began to flicker, & my engine light came on, shortly after exiting the highway, my car stopped accelerating. my foot was pressed down on the gas pedal, but the car wouldn't speed up, all you could hear was the engine running. i had to pull over, turn off, and turn my car back on, to continue driving. after numerous trips to ford, two new batteries, & two new alternators, i am still having the same problems. it has been about a year having this car, & they are still unable to properly diagnose, & fix the problem. in a year span, i have been car-less for about 4 weeks (collectively), have taken multiple uber rides, to and from the dealership(s), and no progress has been made on my 2013 ford fiesta!

The car slips and suddenly goes off while in motion and all the dashboard lights come up so it has to be left for few minutes and it will start all over again. i got a real notice from a dealership which i took to them and they called me back that it was fixed but to my surprise the problem was still there. i sent several emails to them but got no response back from them.

All warning lights come on, headlights go off, and the radio goes off at random times. also the transmission warning comes on randomly (per the message boards this is a common issue with this model). it's been in the dealership's shop 3 times and they've not been able to duplicate the problems therefore they have not fixed the problems.

Engine malfunction error and loss of performance due to manufactor defect in wire harness. ford claims this is a issue done during manufacturing and the fix is to re wire the harness under dash but is not covered due to it being a wiring issue. loss of performance in vehicle is a safety issue if driving on a free way or other roads and you car loses most power. ford has said that this issue is not the worry but it is a very known issue and consumers just have to pay and have it fixed which is costs in the thousands for there manufacturing defect.this issue happens when accelerating or just driving on highway or city streets. it happens non stop randomly and has been happeniing for about 6 months with no help from ford to fix the issues.this is a safety issue because when it happens your car does not want to accelerate it jolts and starts not buring gasoline all the way it also will cause smog issues due to check engine light and you also need to pull vehicle over where ever you are at to turn it off wait a few mins and then it back on so you can keep driving

It was giving a roaring noice and the radio dont work and alot of buuum noice wether it was park in the garage or parking lot it is like a fire work when you lite it. ford send me a notice of the recall, but becouse i move i cant find the notice of the recall

My "engine malfunction service now" light came on. the vehicle has 30,300 miles. took it in and was told that the wires from the gas pedal to the panel were "frayed." they couldn't give me an answer on how this occurred but that it would cost $875.00. my 3yr/36,000 warranty is up. i did take it in for the check up before warranty expired and was told everything was ok. today i was told that they wouldn't have seen this during that inspection. i have no choice but to get it fixed but 30,300 miles and no explanation on how the wires frayed?

Casenumber:1024456 i have been taking my car to summerville ford dealership since purchased in august of 2015 recalls transmission issues door locks it happened when moving they said would call when transmission rep.came in..i was fine to drive. then door latches recalled. they replaced, and my drivers window stopped at a point before going down all theway. it seemed to finally go down but felt like scraping or getting hung up. these folks also left a hubcap off last october though..and did not know..i ruled out as human graced and gave benefit of doubt. when i called they were closed. so i brought back and they said it was a relay switch...but i knew it wasn't because it was not acting like that until (door latch) replacement. then it went away seemingly. i brought back again for check engine light.. then had a fan motor issue they told me to pay warranty and they would cover.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fiesta. when the vehicle was started, the contact heard a loud popping noise near the radio. at times, the radio failed to turn off. the vehicle was not yet inspected and diagnosed by a dealer. the radio continued to stay on after the vehicle was turned off. an independent mechanic suggested that a fuse be disconnected, but the contact needed a permanent solution. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fiesta. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart after the vehicle cooled off. the dealer was unable to diagnose the vehicle. the contact received a letter stating that the vehicle needed a software update to give a visual warning for when the transmission was about to fail. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 33,000.

While driving on the highway the power train/engine malfunction warning light (wrench shaped) warning light came on and remained on until i parked and turned off the car. at the end of the work day i started the car and the warning light was not on. i took the car to a ford service center and was told wires had melted together and needed to be replaced. the reason i was given by the service center is:" test drive - check engine light on, no symptoms detected. ids test pcm koeo-pass. cont - p2138 (app sensor correlation error), koer-pass, per tsb 13-11-15, bypass circuits le136, le137, and re137 at connector c210, pins 1, 8, and 9 respectively, switch app sensor connector pins 1 and 2."

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fiesta. the contact stated that the vehicle received a recall repair for nhtsa campaign number: 15v246000 (latches/locks linkages). the contact had not experienced a failure prior to the recall repair. after the recall repair was completed, the contact began experiencing a failure. when attempting to lock the vehicle, the warning light indicated that the doors were successfully locked. while driving at various speeds, the doors unlocked and the light indicated that the doors were locked. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer, but it was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the contact completed a vin search and found that nhtsa campaign number: 15v246000 (latches/locks linkages) was still referred to as an open recall. the failure mileage was unknown.

Over the last 2 months, the radio and instrument dashboard have been flashing intermittently and car losing power. brought to ford dealership but they couldn't duplicate the problem during test drive. in addition to the problems listed earlier, now the tcs off keeps on flashing even when car is idle.

Buzzing, thumping, fluttering through speakers - even with engine off. noise can be extremely loud and occurs unexpectedly while driving. the vehicle was diagnosed as having a short circuit. the dealer stated the radio tested bad and the radio was replaced. also, a recall was issued for the door latch. however, the parts were not available.

Key was not in the ignition, opened car door after work in parking lot and heard loud static coming from radio/audio system (this has happened several times before but the most recent incident was the worst). please note the incident has happened while the car was moving up the 55 miles per hour and also while the car has been parked - key not in ignition. i hear 'cracking and popping' regularly and sometimes the volume is terrifying and startling. it could actually cause an auto crash - think about driving down the road and the audio system starts blaring static at 10+ unexpectedly... my radio/cd player does not work properly and if it does work for a few minutes, i will hear loud cracking and loud popping and then the radio/cd cuts off. the car feels 'electrified' (the hair on my arms has raised). i believe it is a safety issue and after searching online, i have noticed hundreds of other individuals are writing about experiencing the same problem. recall help much appreciated because something isn't right with the ford cars experiencing these electrical problems. please note while these electrical/audio static problems are going on, the sync system hasn't been fully operational either. my state does not allow driving with cellphones so an unavailable sync system is not only a pain but prevents compliance with the law.

There have been multiple instances that my transmission, while in motion, has stuttered, stalled, or been completely unresponsive. in low gears, the transmission sounds as if it is grinding metal cans. when my car stutters or jerks seemingly out of nowhere, my lights and dash will flicker as well. both my ford dealership and ford itself has told me these safety issues are normal and to be expected. twice i've almost collided with semis on the highway when i was unable to get up to speed properly due to the chugging and stuttering. there are thousands of complaints on this issue. i've already had my clutch and seals replaced once, to no avail. this is the first vehicle i've bought and i'm scared for my safety. ford and my dealership won't take responsibility for these hazards and insist that i'm not driving my car right. the grinding, stuttering, stalling, and outright transmission failure has been occurring for the full 7 months i've had the car. if maintenance invoices are needed, i do have access to these.

Ford has recalled transmission control module on my car, it has been determined a transmission clutch is needed to repair the car to prevent the car from changing gears while the car is in motion and can cause damage, harm and death. the dealership will not repair my car as required by ford motors company as i have requested a rental car while my car in in service. i am seriously concerned if my car is not repaired the car could cause harm to me and possible death as the car does hestiate and stall while going thru intersections and at stop signs and take off.

Car sputters on take off almost dying in the middle of major intersections. radio electrical shorted out the first 3 months and smoke from hood. the right rear door flew open going down the highway

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fiesta. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, the rear driver side door unlocked independently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 55,000.

On the vehicle there is a flaw in lock out safety system. when key is in ignition and car running it is possible to lock your self out. here's how. with key in ignition and driver door open. engage the lock button from key fob. step out side vehicle and close door. you our now locked out of your running vehicle. this has happen twice. i accidentally touched the lock button while trying to engage the trunk release button from key fob. note. the only way to open trunk is from key fob as well as engaging button located outside as long as all doors are unlocked. this is a safety hazard if your vehicle is in weather that could be harmful to small children or animals. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford fiesta. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle jerked, failed to accelerate, and the engine warning light illuminated. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 5,000.

My ford fiesta 2013 has been having issues with shuddering, lunging, jerking, and failing to engage gear shifts. i have been told by several ford dealers and servicemen that i need to drive the vehicle as if it were a stickshift and hesitation between gear shifts is normal for this car. a ford dealer hooked up a laptop and reset the vehicle to tsb 13-4-5 "intermittent transmission clutch shudder dps6 automatic transmission". the problem was not resolved, so i filed a complaint with ford motor company; complaint #2989023. i was told that i need to bring the car to a dealer and they need proof that there is something wrong with the car. the service person said i need to be driving the car while faults are documented because the car has an adaptive learning program that responds to the driver's actions. i brough the car to schaumburgh ford in illinois. the service director test drove the car while i was in the passenger's seat. he said he did not experience any faults with the vehicle. however, there was one instance as we were returning back to the dealership, that the car shuddered. the dealer took the car for the afternoon 8/29/2013 and said he reset the car again for tsb 13-4-5 update although they were unable to provide me with a receipt of work that was done. on the morning of 8/30/2013 the car experienced overheating and burning under the hood. a service person from the schaumber ford dealership in illinois met to pick up the vehicle. the service person told me they would not be able to provide a rental car due to the weekend schedule. the issue is still being addressed by the dealer at this time.

On several occasions now my traction control and abs have malfunctioned. tonight while driving on the highway the abs, traction control and hill assist warning lights came on followed by a complete loss of power steering. *tr

I picked up this vehicle brand- new from the dealership on 8/2/13. by 8/5, three days after i got the car, the entire front end had started to shudder and chug, and the "check engine" light came on. it felt like a deep-seated timing issue (the engine rpms had been a bit off since i picked up the car on 8/2, and it appeared to be shifting oddly, even before the check engine light came on). the clutch also engaged at odd times (i bought an automatic), and it didn't appear that the engine rpms and transmission shifting were synching up correctly at all. my diagnosis was confirmed when i took the vehicle to romano ford in syracuse, ny, where i purchased the vehicle. the next day (8/6), i was told that a "cam phaser" had failed on the engine due to a manufacturing defect, and that the engine oil would need to be completely flushed and changed. after a bit of research, i found out that the phaser is a small gear that regulates engine timing....by being cut incorrectly, metal shavings from the gear had contaminated my engine oil. this, obviously, is not an easy fix. by screwing up my engine timing, the regulation of my entire vehicle is screwed up. the car has been sitting in the shop since 8/6 (it is now 8/22), with no resolution in sight. they brought in a ford technician from god-knows-where that is supposed to fix it; it was supposed to be fixed 2 days ago to no avail. i am now closing in on the time period for invoking the ny state lemon law; i hope i can get my $ back and send this thing to the dump! ford needs to recall these crappy things asap! *tr

Since i bought this car in 2012 it has had problems with the transmission every time i took it to ford they would tell me nothing was wrong with it or that it was something i did. i took it back in a few years ago and it seems like the problem was fixed but it started back up shortly after. so i just stopped complaining about it since it seems it's a wild goose chance. also my stereo has completely cut out and i've had it checked and my mechanic can't seem to find a anything wrong with or why it has cut out and it's been a year i still have yet to figure out the problem.

First time it almost completely died on me getting on the highway, then all of the sudden it gunned it and took off. about 3 miles down the high way engine lights and service lights came on. i got to work and they towed it. they said they changed some kind of wiring under the front window and dash. that didn't fix it. the next day i was pulling out of wendy's and give it some gas and nothing happened. i rolled then all of the sudden it gunned it again. i almost got hit. got it home and parted it. took it in the next day and they changed the throttle body on it. it still hesitates as you go down the highway. has very little take off and merging power. the only thing i am glad i did when i bought this car was i got a straight drive. it would have no power if it was an automatic. *tr

Took car to get accelerator sticking, chugging down, loosing power for the 5th time. when they put it on the computer to see what was wrong they found out that the last dealer that did the airbag recall left the thing unplugged. what? really? if we would have got the accelerator to stick or car die when i was pulling out and got hit and my husband would have gotten hurt because the airbag didn't deploy, what would their excuse be this time. *tr

Transmission jerks aggressively from 1-3 gear. sometimes acceleration is delayed and sluggish. has almost caused a wreck on several occasions. also, the delayed reaction causes the car to lurch forward and the engine revs up high causing the breaks to fail. so you must drive with more distance than normal to avoid collision. i had one car completely replaced. transmission was completely shot after 400 miles. grinding, slipping, jerking, clunking, hesitation, etc. this transmission is a piece of junk. both cars had the same problems. *tr
