We have classified the 218 complaints from 2012 Ford Fiesta about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
The transmission of the vehicle is sluggish going into higher gears, also has a shutter in lower gears and feels like it may stall going up hills also sometime it jumps forward when you lightly touch the gas. this is a definate safety problem as you cannot control your vehicle. we have just bought this vehicle and are very unhappy with the performance.
Purchased used with low mileage. recently had defective clutch plates replaced per ford recall to solve shudder problems. dealer also per recall applied a software update to the transmission. now the car will loose power to the transmission without warning. check engine light came on - multiple attempts to start car. back to dealer two more times for software update. still loosing power (out of gear, no power) to move car forward. very scary. taking car back again for possible tcm replacement. all of this occurring over a three month period. feel very unsafe with this car - without it i am unable to conduct my work with my clients. please help as i can't afford to keep going back to the dealer to try to resolve.
Yes transmission skipping on take off has under 100000mile had a 2011 did same thing but that lock up so dealer let me trade it in i don't want same thing to happen something has to be done ford need to fix. idon't see why its is not a recall i hear same thing from people who own other ford like my .i dealer they said nothing can be done i say [xxx]! so please help!!!!!!!!!!!!. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
My door will not shut and is currently duct taped shut. i don't feel safe driving my car because ford says that my doors may open while you are driving. there is a notice of a recall out but, i can't get my door fixed because ford doesn't have the parts. however, i was still never offered a rental or any other form of help on this matter from ford. i spoke to them on the phone and emailed them and my car is at their service center right now and i have not been offered a solution. also, i have issues with my transmission. i drive a manual and when i go to back out of a parking spot, etc. it will often grind. i have to try several times to get it into either first gear and reverse. last october (2014), there was a service bulletin so ford rebuilt my transmission. this did not resolve the issues though so in may of 2015 i finally emailed ford but i never got a response. now, with my door not shutting i thought it was the perfect time to take care of all of these issues. my car is at the service center now, but ford has said they don't see an issue with the transmission. it doesn't grind every time i put it into first but it happens at least once a week and when i am at a stop light it can be difficult to get it into first gear. this makes me really nervous to turn left in front of on coming traffic.
This vehicle has become dangerous for the third time since i have owned it. the transmission won't engage properly when pulling out from a traffic light or stop of any kind and i have been almost broad sided more than once. i cannot make it through the intersection without the transmission jerking and the car stopping long enough to be dangerous. also, it makes a metallic sound and feels as if it is grinding. i am still paying for this vehicle and it is sitting at a ford dealership for the third time. this time, ford will not return my calls and the dealership tells me that the parts are back ordered and another customer has already been waiting for two months for his to be fixed. please help me get a safe vehicle to drive!
The transmission jerks upon acceleration. the gears do not change smoothly . it is a safety hazard on the freeway as the car will not get up to speed as it should. this started almost immediately when we bought the car. we took it to the ford dealer. the internal clutch has been changed out 3 times at ford of kirkland in kirkland, wa. the car was purchased at harris ford lynwood, wa. ford should take responsibility for this and either replace the car or come up with a permanent fix. i see there is a lawsuit already filed against ford in ca. we of course owe way more than it is worth
At at stop light making a left turn the car failed to accelerate. i hit the gas and nothing happened. the car was still running but did not move. i had to turn the car off and restart it. twice. the same thing happened on the highway about 15 minutes later after traffic came to a stop. the car has a voluntary recall to fix the trans but the parts are not available. i have been waiting over 2 months for the parts.
Car has had transmission problems delay in shifts and jerky loud grinding noises. have had 3 clutch repaires to solve and now to my forth. i've had three close calls as the car failed to accelerate acting almost if the brake was applied when entering trafic. these have been spaced over my ownership since 10/2011. the dealer and the tech tells me this is a design defect and that ford will no longer offer this transmission design. this is a truly unsafe car when the clutch fails. the car was purchased new and had been reprogrammed 6 times and now will have its 4th new clutch installed and it only has 58,800 miles.

Car shudders, jerks, and lurches. concerned about it even being safe to drive. do not have the control needed to drive safe at all times. the dealer has made repairs and adjustment to the transmission issue more than three times. the dealer claims it is fixed each time and each time the problem remains. seems like the nhtsa should step in before someone gets hurt. after researching, it is obvious that this problem is far from unique. please someone get involved.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fiesta. while driving various speeds uphill, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle moved very slowly. also, when parked on a hill, the vehicle would roll backwards without warning. the dealer could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle was included in a recall and the clutch was replaced, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified. the nhtsa campaign number was unknown. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fiesta. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would shake and shudder. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, however the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clutch and catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, however the failure recurred a second time. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle needed a software update. the vehicle was repaired. however, the contact stated that the vehicle began to exhibit the same failure shortly after that repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 53,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2012 ford fiesta. the contact stated while driving 30 mph, the front passenger's side door opened independently. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the and road. the door failed to close in a secured position. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed that the front door latch would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. in addition, the transmission clutch was replaced previously on three separate occasions. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 61,000.
Transmission will no shift property. *tr
I purchased my fiesta in march 2012. shortly after purchase started having problems with the shuttering and hesitating issue due to this new clutch design. the vehicle has been in to the service department where i purchased it the first time the clutch issue was repaired the second time they installed a part of the clutch system. the third time it was in to the service department there was no repair done. the warranty guidelines required the failure to rate at a 270 my failure was a 250. i have contacted a lawyer to get me released from this "death trap". on march 6, 2015, i went to turn left across two lanes of on coming traffic and it shuttered at acceleration and nearly stalled. keep in mind this is automatic. i was nearly broad sided. i made arrangements for a vehicle because i was told that they did not have a loaner for me to drive while they repaired mine. so on, march 10, 2015, i took the fiesta to another local ford service center and upon their inspection was told that the clutch had to be replaced again. the wonderful news to this story is the part is back ordered from the factory and it will take eight weeks for them to receive in the part needed to repair my vehicle. i refuse to drive this vehicle. the ford fiesta is not a vehicle that should have the safety recommendations that it has. it isn't safe for consumer use. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fiesta. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle started to make a shutter motion and failed to accelerate. the failure recurred multiple times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to dealer for diagnostic testing. the mechanic stated that computer module needed to be calibrated. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 29,000.
Transmission sputters on take off shaking car and slipping on incline, also transmission slips on cruise control at 70mph. dealer refused to give rental for this even though we have an extended warranty. also told that they will only reset computer and the problem will never go away completely. in other words ford has no permanent fix for this problem and should be held accountable for still selling these autos knowing it has a serious transmission problem and not disclosing it to the consumer. the consumer is being ripped off. when will someone demand they recall these autos????? *tr
I have owned the care for 5 years. after the first 8 months, it started to stutter when proceeding to go after being stopped. i have taken it to multiple dealerships to address the problem. most of them did a reset on the code. one shop said that he would replace the transmission but my extended warranty only covered internal lubricated parts and i have a dry clutch. i have had it serviced by replacing the transmission fluid and resetting the code again. 2 months ago, the car was not shifting correctly and would rev up to 4k rpm before shifting into the next gear. i am currently waiting for a replacement transmission for this vehicle.
I have had my 2012 ford fiesta ses since september 2011. my vehicle was involved in a transmission recall awhile back and ever since it has had constant transmission issues to include jerky shifting, sluggish acceleration, failure to shift gears, transmission failure message appearing on the radio screen and all constant jerking when driving coming from the transmission. i have had it looked at before with being told it was operating as it should. if this is how it's supposed to operate, i will never purchase another ford.
I bought a 2012 ford fiesta and had the transmission sensor replaced under factory warranty. did not drive the car 5000 miles and the trans sensor messed up again causing the transmission to not shift out of first and second gear without hesitation and vibrations. shifts fine from second on! per the dealer they stated this is a huge issue with fiestas and focuses from 2010 and up! *tr
After 13 days of owning the car, the car began to make grinding noises and would shudder when shifting in low gears. the noise and shuddering was so bad that i was afraid to drive the car. took to dealership and clutch is needing replacement. according to www, this is a very common problem and often progresses to the car suddenly accelerating. this is a dangerous issue and should be treated as such. i find it appalling there has yet to be a recall... *tr
Ford fiesta 2012 transmission has been shuddering for several months and now at 50,000 miles very bad mis shifting and not shifting (sounds like jumping into neutral) i have it in dealer and praying that it is covered with my premium warranty and special extension given by ford for tranny problems
I have had multiple incidents with the transmission of my 2012 fiesta, beginning roughly in november of 2014. the first specific incident i can recall occurred on december 18, 2014. i was driving from toledo, ohio to the detroit, mi airport and back. i had two other passengers in my car who noticed the violent shaking/shuddering problems that my vehicle was having when trying to accelerate. the shuddering occurs at both low speeds and high speeds. the shuddering does not occur daily but roughly 4-5 days a week, causing difficulties with acceleration, breaking, and controlling the vehicle. about two months ago i was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection. when i began to accelerate my car started shaking so violently that it could not move forward any more. at that time a semi-truck was coming up behind me and had to swerve to avoid hitting me. the speed limit at this busy intersection is 40mph. at this point my car is unsafe to drive, even though i have taken it in to the dealer multiple times to fix the transmission. so far, the repairs have been unsuccessful and i am told the potential parts to fix the issue (the clutch) is on back order for a minute of 6-8 weeks. i was told to continue driving my car in the mean time, and that no one can assist me at this time, even though i have been trying to rectify this issue since january 2015. also, the clutch is not guaranteed to fix the problem, as it is the same make as the one currently in my car.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fiesta. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled and abruptly stopped without warning. in addition, the power train failed and the contact was unable to shift the transmission out of gear. the dealer diagnosed that the transmission control module and software needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. after the vehicle was repaired, the failure recurred several other times. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 6,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fiesta. the contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 77,000.
In december 2014 i took my 2012 ford fiesta to the pacifico ford dealership for a shutter clutch problem. they "fixed" the problem but my car continues to jerk, stutter, shake when in first gear. the car also makes a noise. i took the car back for a software update in october 2015 but the problems continued. my husband and i were told that there is nothing the dealership can do because it is just how the transmission is made. i was told that it would not cause a problem. i explained that when sitting in traffic it feels like my car is going to stall; it also jerks. the dealership acknowledged this, along with the noise and again told me there was nothing that can be done and that they were changing the transmission in newer models. i have concerns with the transmission, especially since i travel on the highway everyday to and from work and am concerned that the delay in shifting will cause an accident. i am also concerned that the pacifico ford dealership acknowledged the problem and is doing nothing to help. my warranty it going to expire and my thoughts are that is when ford will be able to address the problem since they will not be paying for it; i will.
I am writing in regards to my 2012 ford fiesta which was purchased in june2014. since then i have had nothing but transmission problems. it was taken to dealer who said there is no problem. the issue persisted and was taken to a different ford dealer who upgraded software. vehicle was fine for a month, now worse than ever. was taken back to same dealer and was told yes, we hear grinding noise, and we feel the slipping but there is nothing they can do. what kind of sense is that!!! i did some research and found thousands of others with the same issues and same responses from the ford people. this is unacceptable! ford should take some kind of responsibility to this issue my car is so bad,my wife is scared to drive fearing slipping out of gear. i have no choice but to file a lemon law suit with ford for negligence. i will also forward this email to consumer protection, news stations and the better business's bureau and any other corporate service i can. i would like response back. *tr
Going up a hill in town the transmission went in and out of gear, almost could not make it up the hill because the transmission would not stay in gear. *tr
The transmission on the fiesta shutters which causes lack of acceleration, delay of acceleration or a skipping of the transmission. this is a huge safety issue because you may pull out in traffic and lose the ability to accelerate, transmission issue can also cause lunging from a stopped position when it engages unexpectedly. vehicle has been "repaired" several times with numerous clutches, seals and reprogramming of controls. repairs usually only last a max of 500 miles and at this time ford does not have a permanent fix to this issue which i feel is a huge safety concern for drivers. dealer service department began repair attempts for this issue on 10/27/14.
I purchased a ford fiesta 2012 a month ago, and have had transmission slippage since. at regular in town speeds, the fiesta slips gears sometimes causing the car to roll backwards. recently i was in bumper to bumper traffic and almost hit a car in front of me because the car jerked so much not knowing what gear it should be in. my car jolted back and forth. i then took the car back to the dealership where it was then taken to ford and the computer for the transmission was reset, they told me to drive the car 1000 miles and to bring it back if not fixed. the car was still doing the same thing on day 1 of return, this car is not safe to me or other people on the road, especially if you are stuck in a lot of traffic. the car also makes grinding noises along with a lot of vibration. nobody should be required to drive this car 1000 miles more just to have to bring it back. it's not safe, and i don't feel comfortable driving it.

My vehicle was having trouble changing gears and felt as though it was going to die at the intersections. i took my vehicle to the dealership where they performed a "reprogram pcm and tcm". within a month of this repair, my vehicle was exhibiting the same issue! i took it to a dealership in phoenix, az and it took almost 5 weeks to get the new transmission delivered to the dealership due to the part being out of stock with the numerous requests for new transmission on this year vehicle. i had to fight with the dealership to keep the rental car i was provided with. they continually called me requesting i bring the rental car back although my vehicle was not yet repaired. i have been having continuing problems with my car and took it in to the dealership today for yet another recall on my transmission and was told it would take approximately 3 days to perform and that ford will not provide me with a rental vehicle while my repairs are being performed. how can a company sell a car to consumers with a knowingly defective transmission and not be accountable to the people that purchased this vehicle in good faith? i can not believe that the safety commission is not holding ford accountable and making them reimburse and rectify this safety hazard. i have made my entire family aware in writing, should something happen to me in this vehicle, they are to proceed with a law suit! how many people need to be injured before this vehicle is recalled??????
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fiesta. while driving approximately 20 mph in second gear, the vehicle started to shake violently. the failure recurred multiple times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing and the computer was reprogrammed, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 9,500.
2012 ford fiesta. consumer writes in regards to vehicle transmission problems. *smd the consumer the transmission would shake, make a grinding noise, jerk, vibrate, hesitate and slip out of gear. *jb
Vehicle has been taken in several times for noise in front of the car and transmission jerking when trying to shift gears ,changing lanes on a highways taking turns and going up and down hills. the clutch system is causing shifting problems and every time i slow down or brake the rattling noise upfront gets louder, i was in the middle of changing lanes when the car jerked gears did not shift and i almost got hit by another car. it is very dangerous and have been getting a run around about getting it fix.the car's electrical system could cause the transmission's electronic controls to shut down or not allow the car to start at all, as i was told by the servicer i looked it up and other cars have the same problem i need assistance as i did my research found there are hundreds of ford fiesta that are having the same problems. *tr
Transmission started vibrating and causing the car to jump and shutter. and wear my tires down.
Fiesta does not shift correctly. shudders at stop lights and hesitates when accelerating. pull out in traffic and car may or may not go. have had at shop multiple times for this. ford has provided software updates and replace clutch several times. last oil change, i asked for software update because it still shudders and hesitates. told out of warranty. it would cost me 150 to diagnose and repair would be my responsibility. cant afford this. lost work due to service repairs. not safe to depend on.
The vehicle had an abnormal idle while at a stop, and would sometimes stall. upon acceleration the vehicle would hesitate and jerk forward. i took the vehicle to the dealership to rectify the issue. i was told that the mechanic cleared the code for the check engine light, but the internal wiring harness needed to be replaced, on a car that was a little over 2 years old. the internal wiring harness was not covered under any type of warranty. the repair was completed at a cost to me of $245.99. less than 2 months later, the vehicle was having the same issues, abnormal idle, stalling, and hesitant and jerky accelerating. again, i took the car back to the dealership for repair. this time the dealership replaced the transmission and clutch front seals, input seals, and axles seals, changed transmission fluid, added 2 quarts of transmission dual clutch transmission fluid. this repair was covered under the ford 5 year, 60,000 mile power train warranty. about 5 weeks later i was still having the same issues, abnormal idle, hesitant and jerky acceleration. again, i took my car to the dealership. this time i was told that the throttle body was bad and needed to be replaced. with no choice, i need to get to work, i told them to go ahead with the repair which once again was not covered under any type of warranty. the total for this repair cost me $720.26. in less than 3 years i have had to go to the dealership for major repairs 3 times and spent just under $1,000, plus the inconvenience of rental cars, days off of work, and the general annoyance of knowing my new vehicle has major mechanical issues. *tr
My car has atransmission problem known by ford. it shutters & stalls & is slow to change gears to the point where it could be dangerous. i am afraid that it will stall to the point where it could be rearended. it has been fixed once and needs to be again. i think it should be recalled along with thousands of others and the transmission be replaced. there is also a popping noise in the steering when i am turning. the next question asks when it happens and the answer is constantly.
When i bought this car from a ford dealership (used in 2014) i noticed that it shudders when shifting through the gears. i was told this is normal; however it has seem to gotten worse. it now also makes grinding noises along with the shuddering when shifting through the gears. i can't imagine that this is supposed to be normal. i t also jerks when shifting through the lower gears. i have since done research to find that not only are there hundreds of other ford fiesta owners that have complained about the same thing, but there is also a class action lawsuit that was filed against ford for this issue. what is being done to resolve this? *tr
Clutch has been replaced every two years on car since it was bought new in 2012. car will start shuddering and have trouble shifting when trying to get up to speed, happens when car is in motion. ford only has replaced with same parts has not fixed problem as car is on fourth clutch, and i expect shuddering to start happening again next year, when the two years with current clutch is up. will notice it happening once or twice and then it becomes more frequent. then you have to deal with the dealer having the parts in stock and being without a car for two days while it is getting repaired. first clutch replaced in june 2014, has been every other june since then.
I have bought my car in 2014 january for a good mileage and stylish look.the vehicle perform well for couple months. later, i have brought my car to the ford service in 2014 july with a complain of transmission and safety. since then i have been in and out of the dealership with automatic transmission problems. my fiesta now has 43k miles and has been to the dealer 2 times for transmission work if i would have time i would definitely bring my car to the service more. it is very unsafe. the last two visits have resulted in major repairs in an attempt to fix the problem and still the problem persists. the transmission shudders, hesitates, and lurches in stop and go traffic or when slowing then starting up again such as at a stop light or stop sign.again it is very unsafe to drive this car i am going to claim a lawsuit against them. *tr
Car shakes and it feels like the tires skip. it happens mostly when the car is warm and i'm going around a corner. has been to the dealer several times for the same thing.they replaced the clutch and did other things but it keeps happening. it is currently at the dealers (rochester indiana ford)again for the same problem. this last time i was driving on ice and the car started shaking.i lost control and went up a curb. i popped the tire. i could have killed someone if they were standing there.it was very scary and i'm afraid to drive this car again knowing it's not safe. *tr
The car makes grinding noises from transmission and when pulling out of a parking lot the car stalls i almost get hit by another car. when in stop and go traffic the at lunges forward almost hitting another car. as of today car has been in shop 3 times on third time they fixed the clutch it did fine for a few months now its doing it again and they are claiming its normal. i'm afraid for my safety. *tr
Transmission had problems, gears grinding, car shaking when accelerating, shifting up and down when driving at a constant speed. *tr
Transmission lurches, bogs down and hesitates when trying to take off. ford said the clutch package went bad and it cost $1,724 to replace the clutch. less then 65k on a 2012 and the transmission goes out. this car belongs to a 16 year old. this is a massive safety issue. *tr
The problem is when i was on a hill and took my foot off of the brake the car would roll backward. i almost hit the car behind me several times especially when trying to accelerate from a hill. then i would press on the gas and the car would move just enough to get me into the middle of the intersection (slowly) and begin to shake, jar and shutter, almost feeling like it was going to stall out. i would continue pressing the gas and nothing would happen. finally it would accelerate rapidly lurching forward. my car began having this problem back in december of 2013. i knew this was a new transmission model in the car, but didn't feel like this was a normal thing. i was told the problems were "normal". the problems progressively got worse. fast forward to march 2014 i took my car into the dealership. i did some research and found out that other people with 2012 fiesta and focus were having the same problems. after waiting for the clutch for almost a month, because it was on back order, my car had a new clutch. i thought this would fix the problem and it did for a little while, and then it began again. my car is still having problems after having the clutch replaced and it is just getting worse. the car is still shuttering when applying the gas. when applying the gas sometimes nothing happens. then it lurches forward. it is hard to determine how much gas to apply because sometimes nothing happens then it's like it all of a sudden shifts gears and at that point it lurches forward. i have barely avoided several accidents where i have almost been t-boned because the car almost stalls in the middle of an intersection. i have also almost rear-ended people because the car lurches forward when in stop and go traffic. my car overall does not feel safe. now ford is saying that the shutter doesn't read at a high enough rpm for them to replace the clutch. please help! *tr
Vehicle shutters, grinds, rattles, and jumps when vehicle reaches 20 mph or higher. i have brought it to the dealer several times...they claim its "normal". it is the transmission which is causing all the problems. ford has verified it but basically told me to "turn up the radio and ignore it". the grinding is loud and sometimes when attempting to accelerate the vehicle will hesitate then the rpms will jump very high almost to 6000 before the vehicle speed increases. this car is a death machine on the highway. i am scared that it will cause an accident because i am not able to accelerate without issues or without the transmission jumping around all over the place. this vehicle needs to be recalled before people die. *tr
I bought a certified pre-owned 2012 fiesta in late february 2014. i had serious issues over the next couple of weeks: lurched when accelerating, so severely thought it would hit cars in front; not shifting right between the lower gears, at times almost stalling; almost in accident when car wouldn't pick up speed or go into gear it seemed; not picking up or going into gear; very little pull up hills from a standstill or lost a great amount of momentum mid-hill (almost rear-ended as a result); revs hard from nowhere; airy, grinding, scraping sound. spoke to ford customer relationship center numerous times. they claimed the six-speed transmission provides "an unusual driving experience." i explained i didn't feel safe driving it. i requested an address for sending a complaint letter and the woman seemed to discourage that, stating that the documentation from my phone call would be sent up the chain of command in ford and to the highway safety administration. the transmission was removed, the clutch replaced, and both input shaft seals replaced in march. the problems began again. now i'm dealing with the same issues. i'm very concerned, especially when i look at my own experiences with the car coupled with the comments i have read here.
Car accelerated without touching the gas pedal at a stop sign and then would not engage when the light turned. this was not a single event it has happened multiple times. *tr
